Vesakh ist der wichtigste buddhistische Feiertag. Buddhistinnen und Buddhisten feiern weltweit die Geburt und Erleuchtung von Buddha. SRF zeigt eine Zusammenfassung der Vesakh-Feier im taiwanesischen Fo Guang Shan-Tempel in Gelfingen im Kanton Luzern. Vesakh (Sanskrit Vaisakha) ist der wichtigste Feiertag in allen buddhistischen Ländern. Der Termin des Feiertags variiert. Er wird nach dem Mondkalender berechnet. An Vesakh erinnern Buddhistinnen und Buddhisten an die Geburt des Prinzen Siddhartha Gautama, des Begründers des Buddhismus. Als nach den Berichten Königin Mahamaya bei der Stadt Lumbini im heutigen Nepal unter einem Salbaum ihren Sohn Siddhartha geboren hatte, sprühten neun Drachen Wasser aus ihren Mäulern und Hunderttausende Vögel sangen. Das neugeborene Baby stellte sich auf seine eigenen Füsse, ging sieben Schritte, zeigte mit der einen Hand nach oben, mit der anderen nach unten und konnte sprechen. Ein Wolkenbruch reinigte den Körper des Prinzen von den Spuren der Geburt. Daran erinnert an Vesakh bis heute eine Zeremonie, bei der eine Buddha-Statue gewaschen wird. Im taiwanesischen Tempel in Gelfingen leitet Meisterin Miao Yen die religiöse Zeremonie. Die Vereinspräsidentin Rongying Pan begleitet die Meisterin bei den deutschsprachigen Sutras und Wunschgebeten. Die Bedeutung der Vesakh-Zeremonie wird von Kayenne Ha erläutert. Die Zeremonie und die Begegnungen danach beim Essen geben zudem einen Einblick in das Leben der buddhistischen Gemeinde in Gelfingen LU.

This charming bhajan is especially popular in the Mithilanchal area of North Bihar. Attributed by some to the famous 14th-15th century Maithil poet and scholar Vidyapati, the poem is in the medieval vernacular local dialect of the region (Sankrit-derived Apabhramsh/nascent Maithili). In the spirit of Bhakti (loving personalized devotion) the Devi is adored as Mother, Bhagawati, Mahamaya, Durga and her beautiful form poetically described: she sits laughing and happy, on a lotus astride her lion. Her hands hold a conch-shell and weapons to slay evildoers. She is radiant in red, like the rising sun and is the protector of those who are orphaned and helpless.

Student Comment: I read something today which said that “everything that is transient is not real.” “Well, the definition of ‘Real’ is what is in question,” begins Shunyamurti, the director of the Sat Yoga Institute in Costa Rica. “For most of the Eastern traditions, the Real is that which is eternal, immutable, and non-changing.” For a Westerner, however, “the Real” is typically understood as the “external,” objective world of common experience. In contrast, for Indians, for example, the “external world” is understood as Mahamaya, the cosmic illusion. “So in that sense, of course, everything within this flux that we call time and space is unreal, but that doesn’t mean we don’t feel it very deeply, that it can’t traumatize us, etc. A nightmare is not real, but you can wake up in a sweat over it. . . . And so this Cosmic Dream is given [to] us in the way it is in order to help us achieve the Real, and to begin to grow to levels of wisdom and awareness that transcend even our original Nature so that there is an evolution to ever higher and higher states.
