Dennis is live at Reston Presbyterian Church to talk about false gods, discipleship and the big mystery that changed a nation. How did so many false gods infest the Temple of Jerusalem? Why did a King ditch his father and grandfather's religionS?? The Bible never ceases to amaze me. We find our faith's inspiration from the real-life accounts of the men and women who have gone before us. Jacob is old and dying. His last work is to pass God's promises of land and family to an unlikely pair of what some have called, "half-breed" grandchildren. Jacob will adopt Mannaseh and Ephraim as his own sons. One of them will have a descendant who will bring forth the Messiah, the forever king. Both boys are brought before Jacob. Certainly, the greatest privilege will fall upon Mannaseh, the older son who is placed under Jacob's right hand of blessing. But no. Jacob crosses his hands and once again we see the younger take precedent over the older. The crossing of hands tells us that God's grace arrives in surprising ways. There may be some desire in your life that you want to put forward under God's right hand and you are displeased because the right-hand passes over that onto something or someone else. It's not that God doesn't understand, but rather he refuses to bless that which you will covet. He will give you all you need and the grace to live without what you most earnestly desire so you must be content to trust him. God's grace cannot be tamed. The shocking truth is that these boys are not even fully Hebrew and the younger will have the place of preeminence. God has his own principles that cannot be confined to conventional human wisdom. It took Jacob a lifetime to learn this lesson. Joseph's own faith was being tested. This meant that his sons were never going to live the high life of a noble position in Egypt. They are now placed into a lowly Hebrew shepherding family and have no chance of any great future as Egyptian royalty. What Joseph and Jacob could not fully see was the dramatic work God was going to do through these two young men. But Jacob and Joseph had faith to see it through and this is why they are listed in Hebrews chapter eleven as examples for us.

In this podcast you will hear how the theme of Isaiah was the problem of sin and solution of Jesus Christ was demonstrated through one king. Manasseh was an evil king demonstrating the problem of sin but later he repented which demonstrates the solution of repentance.
2 Kings 21:19-26 ESV 19 Amon was twenty-two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned two years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Meshullemeth the daughter of Haruz of Jotbah. 20 And he did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, as Manasseh his father had done. 21 He walked in all the way in which his father walked and served the idols that his father served and worshiped them. 22 He abandoned the LORD, the God of his fathers, and did not walk in the way of the LORD. 23 And the servants of Amon conspired against him and put the king to death in his house. 24 But the people of the land struck down all those who had conspired against King Amon, and the people of the land made Josiah his son king in his place. 25 Now the rest of the acts of Amon that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah? 26 And he was buried in his tomb in the garden of Uzza, and Josiah his son reigned in his place HE ABANDONED THE LORD Undoubtedly, Mannaseh was the most evil king of Judah. He was comparable to King Ahab of the Northern kingdom. After him Amon his son reigned, who was no different but f. He abandoned the Lord, the God of his fathers, and did not walk in the way of the Lord.[v.22] He ended his two year reign tragically because his servants conspired against him and put the king to death in his house. His killers were killed as well by the people of the land. He punctuated his kingdom with much killings. We are not told why he was assassinated by his own servants. Certainly, their act demonstrated their disloyalty to him. He wasn't able to get their trust either because either they were provoked to anger because they were oppressed or they were driven by jealousy to usurp his power. Indeed, he who abandoned the Lord may live an abhorrent or abusive life. That is, he didn't know how to relate with others – to his equals or subordinates. Conversely, he, who in his heart, is pursuing God would display the compassion of God. The temperature of somebody would rise if he is close to the furnace, would it not? The reason why leaders have had problems with people is that their hearts are far from God. About this ‘cause and effect' reality, John has something to say, “If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.”[1 John 4:20-21] Everything in us rises and falls with our relationship with God. Thus today, let's take care first and foremost our relationship with God. When our hearts has been in the warmth of God's presence, we would relate warmly others. The reason is not necessarily that people are lovable, for they're not. It is because the love of God has constrained us. ----------------------- Visit and FOLLOW Gospel Light Filipino on YouTube, Facebook and Instagram
2 Kings 21:1-9 ESV Manasseh was twelve years old when he began to reign, and he reigned fifty-five years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Hephzibah. 2 And he did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, according to the despicable practices of the nations whom the LORD drove out before the people of Israel. 3 For he rebuilt the high places that Hezekiah his father had destroyed, and he erected altars for Baal and made an Asherah, as Ahab king of Israel had done, and worshiped all the host of heaven and served them. 4 And he built altars in the house of the LORD, of which the LORD had said, “In Jerusalem will I put my name.” 5 And he built altars for all the host of heaven in the two courts of the house of the LORD. 6 And he burned his son as an offering and used fortune-telling and omens and dealt with mediums and with necromancers. He did much evil in the sight of the LORD, provoking him to anger. 7 And the carved image of Asherah that he had made he set in the house of which the LORD said to David and to Solomon his son, “In this house, and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, I will put my name forever. 8 And I will not cause the feet of Israel to wander anymore out of the land that I gave to their fathers, if only they will be careful to do according to all that I have commanded them, and according to all the Law that my servant Moses commanded them.” 9 But they did not listen, and Manasseh led them astray to do more evil than the nations had done whom the LORD destroyed before the people of Israel. A REGRESSION Definitely, Mannaseh did the opposite to all that his father Hezekiah did. He annuled the reforms that all his father had done. At a young age of 12, he began his reign and for the next 55 years he brought back all the idols that his father had removed. His kingdom may had progressed politically but had retrogressed spiritually. Sadly, Hezekiah's spiritual reforms was not embraced by his son. Parents who nurture their children in the fear of God may result to godly children. Solomon said, “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.”[Prov 22:6] But, this is not an empirical formula that guarrantees the same resut to every parent. The deceitfulness of the child's heart is too complex and rooted for us to comprehend. As Jeremiah said; “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? 10 “I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.”[Jer 17:9,10] Hence, the parent might had done his part but the child himself is always responsible for his choices later in life. As Ezekiel had said, “ The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not suffer for the iniquity of the father, nor the father suffer for the iniquity of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.”[Eze 18:20] Only God can change the heart of a child. It does follow that we should always lift them up at the throne of God. Let's learn the parenting practice of Job. “And when the days of the feast had run their course, Job would send and consecrate them, and he would rise early in the morning and offer burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job said, “It may be that my children have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts.” Thus Job did continually.”[Job 1:5] His children were grown up yet he did not stop his influence through prayers. ------------------------ Visit and FOLLOW Gospel Light Filipino on YouTube and Facebook
Today Pastor Mark brings us a sermon on 2 Kings 22-23. Ponder with us the situation in Judah prior to the reign of King Josiah and how he found the Book of the Law and purified the Temple. Consider with us how we, too, are to be keepers of the Book.
02/21/21 | All throughout The Book of Kings, people’s hearts were far from God. Yet even though people were divided, God still chose to move among them. In Week 4, Pastor Jeff unpacks the story of King Manasseh (2 Chronicles 33). Although his father Hezekiah knew God, Mannaseh: 1) Parted ways from the faith of his father 2) Polluted the temple of the Lord 3) Played the people of God 4) Paid no attention 5) Put off his surrender to the Lord Thankfully, it's never too late to come to the Lord. In the last years of his life, Mannaseh repented and was forgiven by God. Yet Pastor Jeff admonishes us not to sit by idly, and instead encourages us to make the most of every opportunity that God places in front of us.
