This week, Shat the Movies finally kneels before Zod—and listener Chris Lloyd—by reviewing Superman II (1980), the sequel that gave us Terrence Stamp's immortal sneer, Margot Kidder's bathrobe thirst, and Christopher Reeve's blue-eyed beefcake perfection. This episode dives headfirst into the Donner vs. Lester debate, asks how much ejaculate the Fortress of Solitude can handle, and questions Lois Lane's true intentions once Clark Kent drops the glasses—and the powers. Gene and Big D examine everything from Superman's bizarre morality and dubious revenge tactics to the wildly impractical Phantom Zone prison system. They also debate if memory-wiping kisses and cellophane logos deserve a place in superhero canon and why Perry White's newsroom features a threatening photo of Bill Cosby. Whether you're team “Mormon Dad Superman” or “Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex,” this episode delivers laughs, awkward truths, and more than a few inappropriate questions about Kryptonian sex. Plot Summary After banishing Kryptonian rebels General Zod, Ursa, and Non to the Phantom Zone, Superman continues his life as Clark Kent—until a hydrogen bomb explosion in space releases the trio. Landing on Earth, they gain Superman's powers from the yellow sun and quickly set their sights on global domination. Meanwhile, Lois Lane grows suspicious of Clark's identity, prompting him to reveal his secret and sacrifice his powers to be with her. But when Zod and his cronies begin wreaking havoc—and Lex Luthor joins their side—Superman must reclaim his abilities and protect humanity. The final showdown brings the villains to the Fortress of Solitude, where Superman uses brains over brawn to save the world, while also redefining the meaning of romantic boundaries with a memory-erasing kiss. Holy Kryptonian catastrophe, comic crusaders! This week on Play Comics, we're diving headfirst into the digital dumpster fire that is Superman: Countdown to Apokolips for the Game Boy Advance – because apparently someone thought the best way to honor Superman: The Animated Series was to trap the Man of Steel in a tiny screen prison with graphics that make MS Paint look like the Sistine Chapel. Released in 2003 by the brave souls at Mistic Software (after poor Crawfish Interactive literally died during development – talk about your occupational hazards!), this isometric adventure promised to let players soar through Metropolis while battling Livewire, Metallo, and the fashion disaster known as Kalibak. What it actually delivered was a gaming experience so punishing that even Darkseid would file a complaint with customer service. Joining us for this digital descent into madness is Adam Maresh from my local shop back when he lived by me – a man who's seen more comic-to-game adaptations crash and burn than a rejected Justice League movie pitch. Together, we'll explore how this GBA “gem” managed to score a whopping 45% on GameRankings and somehow convinced IGN to give it a 4.5/10 (which in retrospect feels generous). So grab your emergency kryptonite antidote and prepare for an episode that's more fun than actually playing the game – which, let's face it, isn't exactly setting the bar stratospheric. Will Superman's portable adventure redeem itself through sheer nostalgic charm, or will it crash harder than a Daily Planet exclusive? Tune in to find out if this animated series tie-in belongs in the Fortress of Solitude… or the Phantom Zone! Learn such things as: Should we get Golden Age Superman back? What powers do you give the man who could have anything? Where's Krypto? I want Krypto! Everyone is always talking about Krypto. And so much more! You can find Adam at a place that even I technically don't know the location of. Jace and Rocky chat about the DC Comics titles for the final week of 2024. It is a huge week with 17 titles hitting the stands but it is a bit underwhelming as we get the third issue of Gargoyle of Gotham with the book losing momentum because of such a long dealy between issues. The final issue of Batman Brave and the Bold is also a bit of a let down with a lack of memorable stories and Powergirl also continues to disappoint. On the other hand the debut of Metamorpho is very strong and the Phantom Zone story in Action Comics comes to a very satisfying conclusion. Justive League Unlimited also continues to be a must-read. Green Arrow, Superman, Batman The Last Halloween and Black Canary: Best of the Best round the impressive titles for the week.

Host Anthony Desiato and guest Dan Greenfield (13th Dimension) dig into the 1980 film SUPERMAN II, a beloved entry in the franchise despite — or perhaps because of? — being the product of two directors' visions. A combination of original director Richard Donner's more grounded, earnest approach and replacement Richard Lester's campier leanings, the movie follows Christopher Reeve's Superman as he relinquishes his powers to begin a romance with Lois Lane (Margot Kidder)...just as Kryptonian trio of Zod, Non, and Ursa escape the Phantom Zone. The specific focus of this episode is the official theatrical cut, though Anthony and Dan do discuss the long-fabled Donner Cut, which was finally released in 2006 — and offer their final word on what the "best" version of SUPERMAN II truly is.Support the show and receive exclusive podcast content at Patreon.com/AnthonyDesiato, including the spinoff podcasts BEYOND METROPOLIS and DIGGING FOR JUSTICE!Visit BCW Supplies and use promo code FSP to save 10% on your next order of comics supplies. Here's the run down – MultiVersus: Collision Detected #3 – “Rated by Dash” – 4/5. This issue is just crazy but it is good and I love the pictures. Jenny Sparks #3 – 4/10 – Evil Captain Atom kills the enti8re Justice League team. But also didn't. Or maybe he did? And Jenny smokes. Such. Great. Writing. All points given for the art. Batman: Full Moon #1 – 7.5/10 – An interesting story. Batman's no stranger to horror stories, but this one feels written a little different. I enjoy it, and Subic's art. However, Subic… stop signing interior pages. You look incredibly full of yourself when you do that. It's in the credits. That's the only place it needs to be. Dark Knights of Steel: Allwinter #4 – 8/10 – I really hope that DKOS continues after this, like a White Knight kind of universe. Please. So fun to read, such great stories. Such good art. Batman and Robin: Year One #1 – 8.25/10 – This is a great year one story without it being an origin story. It's not campy or with cheesy dialog. I's written well; the art works awesome. It's a great time. The Strange Case of Harleen and Harley – 9/10 – This was awesome. Really. Like an origin story for the development of the Harley Quinn side of Harleen Quinzel. And Poison Ivy. It was done really well and the art works great for it too. It's not a kid's book, unless kids should read the F bomb, which does show up once along with some other profanity later in the book. So… if this was a movie, it would be rated PG 13. This Is Our Land – A Blue Beetle Story – 9.5/10 – A VERY rare 9.5 from me because of how absolutely amazing this book is. There's really not another way to describe it. It's relevant, has real meaning, is impactful and it gives a cool bit of an origin story. And it's written so damn well that I couldn't peel my eyes off of it, and may even go back and read it again. Unbelievably good. I couldn't recommend it more. Harley Quinn in Paradise #1 – 7.75/10 - It's a silly webcomic about Harley shortly after breaking up with the Joker. She's pissed off a lot of criminals and Poison Ivy warns her to hide… so her idea to make everyone love her while staying safe is … get cast on a reality show looking for true love. Ooohhhh boy. This should be something. The art is good, and I like Harley's new look at the end of the issue. Nothing Butt Nightwing #1 – 7/10 – A webcomic about Nightwing going undercover as a model while dealing with… being dumped by Babs. For a webcomic, this was actually not too bad. I've seen far worse. It was enjoyable for what it was… but… if an issue is centered around Dick Grayson's butt, only Nicola Scott should be asked to draw it. Art wasn't bad though. #ActionComics #WorldsFinest #Catwoman #GreenLantern #WonderWoman #Titans #Nightwing #DCAllIn #AllIn #Absolute #ComicsAreForEveryone #ComicsAreGreat #MakeComicsGreatAgain #AbsolutePower #DCComics #comics #comicbooks #TheGeekMatrix #TGM #TheGeekMatrixPod --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thegeekmatrixcomics/support

Host Anthony Desiato and guest Zach Moore (Always Hold On To Smallville) pick up right where they left off last week as they continue charting Clark's personal journey across the decade-long television series SMALLVILLE. This week, they follow Clark into the so-called "Dropout Years," when he left college to run the farm after Jonathan's death and shied away from the destiny that awaited — even as he developed super-breath, encountered more of his future Justice League teammates, rounded up escaped Phantom Zone prisoners, and looked after Kara Zor-El. Then, they enter the Metropolis Years, aka the final era of the show, in which Clark started working at the Daily Planet, embarked on a romantic relationship with Lois, developed a dual superhero identity (The Blur), and — at long last — reconciled both of his worlds before taking flight as Superman."A Superboy Fan Journey" Chapter XVIII.Support the show and receive exclusive podcast content at Patreon.com/AnthonyDesiato, including the spinoff podcasts BEYOND METROPOLIS and DIGGING FOR JUSTICE!Visit BCW Supplies and use promo code FSP to save 10% on your next order of comics supplies. Hello, SayWhovia! Did you make it through Thanksgiving? Dan and Maureen did! Mostly! Dan has only part of a car, though. And Maureen is still in Philadelphia. She went to the craft store. She has a tale to tell. Many tales—tales of birds in walls, spiders, slugs—so many creatures. She may never leave Philadelphia. She is trapped forever, like she is in the Phantom Zone.Dan does not want to talk about the news, but Maureen insists on a little, as a treat. So it's just a little. But it does include the fact that this is the third Trump campaign Says Who will be covering, and that fact hits Dan hard. Three times. That's a franchise. But which franchise is it? Star Wars? Scream? Die Hard? The answer is also a bit much for Dan. Again, he only has part of a car.Diplomatic immunity, Says Whovia. It's been revoked.
