Read transcriptSomewhere out there is a piece of Superman history that almost nobody remembers exists. Not because it was bad. Not because it flopped. It just… vanished off the internet one day, like it got caught in a Phantom Zone projector aimed at a server farm. That's the story of The Multipath Adventures of Superman, and we're about to dig it back up. The whole thing started life as a CD project dreamed up with actual comic book writers, including Louise Simonson and Steve Englehart, before publisher Brilliant Digital Entertainment decided the format worked better as an ongoing online series. So you got Menace of Metallo on disc, and then a sprawling, branching, multi-arc saga that lived entirely on the internet, complete with a villain who time-travels just to make everyone's life harder. And then, because this is the late '90s internet we're talking about, the entire thing quietly vanished. No re-releases, no remasters, just a bunch of dead links and a handful of people insisting this was real and they didn't dream it. So yes, this episode is a little bit of a cheat. We usually stick to games you could buy off a shelf and put in a console. This is software, distributed on a CD-ROM and later piecemeal over a dial-up connection, that you had to install a special plugin just to run. But it's a piece of Superman history that's basically slipped through the cracks of the internet entirely, and that felt worth breaking the rules for. Helping me dig through the wreckage is Chris Baker from SuperHero.vg, who has spent decades working on actual superhero games at places like Marvel and LucasArts and literally wrote the book on this stuff with WRONG! Retro Games, You Messed Up Our Comic Book Heroes! If anyone can tell us whether this lost relic deserves to stay lost, it's him. So load up the B3D Projector, brace for some early-internet voice acting, and let's see how many ways Metropolis can end before lunch. Learn such things as: What happens when a piece of officially licensed Superman media just disappears off the internet? Is watching a Choose Your Own Adventure even a game? Is anyone at DC kicking themselves now since there's probably dozens of people who want to see this? And so much more! You can find Chris over at  SuperHero.vg or @cbake76 on BlueSky or Threads. Or both. And if you listened all the way to the end and want to read the review that Chris shared with me, here's the link he mentioned. The two head down to P.Z. and get captured by General Zod, who has been hosting his own thunderdome there. While the bros try to get back home, Tess and Lois are having girl time at Watchtower. FYI, "girl time" equals Lois holding Tess at gunpoint.Callum Blue (Columbiana, Princess Diaries 2) makes a surprise return, and final appearance, as DC Comics' original character General Zod. Cory usually brings the funk, but today he's got the punk with a pair of movies that warped his young mind way back in the 80s. And he's also brining along film historian and commentary track superstar Marc Edward Heuck in an episode we call CORY'S PUNK ROCK AND SHOCK TIL YOU DROP! (Or at least that's what Bob called it when he hyped it in our last episode.) Cory's first pick is LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THE FABULOUS STAINS (1982--kinda), a movie most of us discovered on USA Network's glorious NIGHT FLIGHT in the mid-80s. This movie about a defiant girl punk band getting out of their shitty mill town inspired L7 and Bikini Kill to start bands, and even Jon Bon Jovi cites it as an influence. JBJ notwithstanding, our world would be a crappier place without it. Marc contributed two commentary tracks to the excellent new Fun City Editions 4K UHD and Blu-ray release so he will tell you all about the movie that Paramount could not keep down. Then, the Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo capture their crazed stage show in the surreal PHANTOM ZONE (1980). And if that wasn't enough, they added Hervé Villechaize and Susan Tyrrell as the king and queen to make it even weirder. Streaming on Roku, Tubi, Plex and more. In the intro segment, Marc tells us what it's like to record commentary tracks, Bob talks about the wonders of digital broadcast with all the MeTVs there, and Cory and Philena extol the virtues of low-budget TV jingles. For this Thanksgiving-week DC Spotlight covering the books of November 26, 2025, Jace and Rocky tackle one of the biggest slates of the year and find a lively mix of event chaos, holiday charm, grounded character work, and absolute-universe bombast, even as they debate whether the buzz around the Absolute line and DC KO is starting to overshadow the strong "regular" DC books. They unpack how Superman #32 quietly becomes one of the most essential KO tie-ins by finally revealing how the villains escaped the Phantom Zone and entered the tournament; how Flash #27 and Justice League Unlimited provide fun but mixed connective tissue to KO; and how Christopher Condon's Green Arrow #30 delivers another emotional gut-punch of Ollie, Roy, and Lian's family drama as the run nears its end. They also spotlight the gritty precision of Gabriel Hardman's new Black Label debut Arcadia with Batman, Green Arrow, and the Question, revisit the escalating mystery in Immortal Legend: Batman, cheer on the kaiju spectacle of Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong, and take a surprisingly deep dive into the holiday anthology I Saw Ma Hunkel Kissing Santa Claus, praising the meta-hilarious Animal Man riff, the charming Supergirl/Brainiac 5 romance, and a Dr. Light/Atom story that may even seed future key elements. But the episode ultimately belongs to the Absolute Universe, with the guys debating what works in Absolute Wonder Woman #14 before completely losing their minds over Absolute Batman #14, a gloriously unhinged action-packed fight finale to the Abomination arc filled with skyscraper-dropping theatrics, venom-fueled warfare, Killer Croc callbacks, and a chilling Joker twist that redefines Bane's future. They celebrate Nick Dragotta's wildly ambitious layouts—now finally earning the industry recognition his East of West work always deserved—while reflecting on how the issue crystallizes what makes this version of Batman so different: a hero who fights not to win, but because fighting is the point. The episode wraps with their week-end rankings, teases of upcoming Fireside Chats, YouTube shout-outs, and a Thanksgiving sendoff that doubles as a rallying cry for the week's standout title: "Welcome to Gotham."

Read transcriptHoly hybridized heroes and gamma-powered game adaptations, comic crusaders! This week on Play Comics, we're diving beak-first into the pixelated pandemonium that is Disney's PK: Out of the Shadows for PS2 and GameCube – because apparently someone thought the best way to honor The New Papernick Adventures (or The Duck Avenger for us North American folks) was to trap Donald Duck's superheroic alter ego in a 3D action-adventure that makes even the most patient gamers quack under pressure. Released in 2002 by Ubisoft Casablanca, this cel-shaded space opera promised to let players wield PK's X-Transformer gadgetry while battling the dastardly Evronians in their quest for galactic domination. What it actually delivered was a gaming experience that had all the depth of a Duckburg puddle and combat mechanics so repetitive that even One, PK's AI companion, probably wished he could compute his way out of this digital disaster. Joining us for this intergalactic expedition into mediocrity is Esh Johansen from the YouTube channel Fiction Addiction – a man who's already subjected himself to this very game and lived to tell the tale with his signature blend of wit and existential gaming dread. Together, we'll explore how this comic book adaptation managed to take one of Disney Italy's most innovative sci-fi superhero series and transform it into a linear platformer that makes rescuing scientists feel like actual work. So grab your cape and prepare for an episode that's infinitely more entertaining than grinding through the same alien duck enemies for hours on end – which, let's be honest, isn't exactly setting the bar at Ducklair Tower heights. Will this Evronians-versus-earthlings adventure redeem itself through sheer nostalgic charm, or will it vanish into the shadows faster than Donald's secret identity? Tune in to discover if this galactic game deserves a place in the Hall of Heroes… or should be banished to the Phantom Zone alongside Superman's worst enemies! Learn such things as: What else can Donald Duck get himself into? Did the developers even get to see the comics before working on this one? How many people are going to come ask me about doing other Disney Duck related games now? And so much more! You can find Esh on YouTube @FictionAddiction. Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

This week, Shat the Movies finally kneels before Zod—and listener Chris Lloyd—by reviewing Superman II (1980), the sequel that gave us Terrence Stamp's immortal sneer, Margot Kidder's bathrobe thirst, and Christopher Reeve's blue-eyed beefcake perfection. This episode dives headfirst into the Donner vs. Lester debate, asks how much ejaculate the Fortress of Solitude can handle, and questions Lois Lane's true intentions once Clark Kent drops the glasses—and the powers. Gene and Big D examine everything from Superman's bizarre morality and dubious revenge tactics to the wildly impractical Phantom Zone prison system. They also debate if memory-wiping kisses and cellophane logos deserve a place in superhero canon and why Perry White's newsroom features a threatening photo of Bill Cosby. Whether you're team “Mormon Dad Superman” or “Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex,” this episode delivers laughs, awkward truths, and more than a few inappropriate questions about Kryptonian sex. Plot Summary After banishing Kryptonian rebels General Zod, Ursa, and Non to the Phantom Zone, Superman continues his life as Clark Kent—until a hydrogen bomb explosion in space releases the trio. Landing on Earth, they gain Superman's powers from the yellow sun and quickly set their sights on global domination. Meanwhile, Lois Lane grows suspicious of Clark's identity, prompting him to reveal his secret and sacrifice his powers to be with her. But when Zod and his cronies begin wreaking havoc—and Lex Luthor joins their side—Superman must reclaim his abilities and protect humanity. The final showdown brings the villains to the Fortress of Solitude, where Superman uses brains over brawn to save the world, while also redefining the meaning of romantic boundaries with a memory-erasing kiss. Holy Kryptonian catastrophe, comic crusaders! This week on Play Comics, we're diving headfirst into the digital dumpster fire that is Superman: Countdown to Apokolips for the Game Boy Advance – because apparently someone thought the best way to honor Superman: The Animated Series was to trap the Man of Steel in a tiny screen prison with graphics that make MS Paint look like the Sistine Chapel. Released in 2003 by the brave souls at Mistic Software (after poor Crawfish Interactive literally died during development – talk about your occupational hazards!), this isometric adventure promised to let players soar through Metropolis while battling Livewire, Metallo, and the fashion disaster known as Kalibak. What it actually delivered was a gaming experience so punishing that even Darkseid would file a complaint with customer service. Joining us for this digital descent into madness is Adam Maresh from my local shop back when he lived by me – a man who's seen more comic-to-game adaptations crash and burn than a rejected Justice League movie pitch. Together, we'll explore how this GBA “gem” managed to score a whopping 45% on GameRankings and somehow convinced IGN to give it a 4.5/10 (which in retrospect feels generous). So grab your emergency kryptonite antidote and prepare for an episode that's more fun than actually playing the game – which, let's face it, isn't exactly setting the bar stratospheric. Will Superman's portable adventure redeem itself through sheer nostalgic charm, or will it crash harder than a Daily Planet exclusive? Tune in to find out if this animated series tie-in belongs in the Fortress of Solitude… or the Phantom Zone! Learn such things as: Should we get Golden Age Superman back? What powers do you give the man who could have anything? Where's Krypto? I want Krypto! Everyone is always talking about Krypto. And so much more! You can find Adam at a place that even I technically don't know the location of. Jace and Rocky chat about the DC Comics titles for the final week of 2024. It is a huge week with 17 titles hitting the stands but it is a bit underwhelming as we get the third issue of Gargoyle of Gotham with the book losing momentum because of such a long dealy between issues. The final issue of Batman Brave and the Bold is also a bit of a let down with a lack of memorable stories and Powergirl also continues to disappoint. On the other hand the debut of Metamorpho is very strong and the Phantom Zone story in Action Comics comes to a very satisfying conclusion. Justive League Unlimited also continues to be a must-read. Green Arrow, Superman, Batman The Last Halloween and Black Canary: Best of the Best round the impressive titles for the week.

Digging for Kryptonite: A Superman Fan Journey

Host Anthony Desiato and guest Dan Greenfield (13th Dimension) dig into the 1980 film SUPERMAN II, a beloved entry in the franchise despite — or perhaps because of? — being the product of two directors' visions. A combination of original director Richard Donner's more grounded, earnest approach and replacement Richard Lester's campier leanings, the movie follows Christopher Reeve's Superman as he relinquishes his powers to begin a romance with Lois Lane (Margot Kidder)...just as Kryptonian trio of Zod, Non, and Ursa escape the Phantom Zone. The specific focus of this episode is the official theatrical cut, though Anthony and Dan do discuss the long-fabled Donner Cut, which was finally released in 2006 — and offer their final word on what the "best" version of SUPERMAN II truly is.Support the show and receive exclusive podcast content at Patreon.com/AnthonyDesiato, including the spinoff podcasts BEYOND METROPOLIS and DIGGING FOR JUSTICE!Visit BCW Supplies and use promo code FSP to save 10% on your next order of comics supplies.
