BUFFALO, NY - March 11, 2025 – A new #editorial was #published in Oncotarget, Volume 16, on March 10, 2025, titled “EXPOSOMES and GENES: The duo influencing CANCER initiation and progression." In this editorial, Drs. Uzma Saqib, Katherine E. Ricks, Alexander G. Obukhov, and Krishnan Hajela from Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya (DAVV) in Indore, India, discuss how environmental factors, known as exposomes, interact with genes to influence cancer risk. The authors highlight how pollution, diet, infections, and chronic stress can trigger genetic alterations that may lead to cancer. Understanding these connections could play a crucial role in cancer prevention and public health strategies. Genes store the instructions for how the body functions, but they can be damaged by harmful exposures. Polluted air, radiation, tobacco smoke, and processed foods can lead to DNA damage, interfering with the body's natural ability to repair itself. Over time, these genetic changes can increase the risk of cancer development. The authors emphasize that nearly everyone is exposed to cancer risk factors daily. “According to the Global Air Quality Guidelines of World Health Organization (WHO), nearly all of the global population (>99%) breathes polluted air that exceeds guideline limits.” For example, air pollution has been linked to lung cancer, while UV radiation is a leading cause of skin cancer. Processed meats contain harmful chemicals that can damage DNA, and excessive alcohol consumption has been shown to raise the risk of liver cancer by causing toxic buildup in cells. Even chronic stress and hormone imbalances can weaken the body's natural defenses against cancer by altering key genetic pathways. Infections also play a critical role in cancer risk. The Helicobacter pylori bacterium can cause stomach cancer by damaging stomach cells, while human papillomavirus (HPV) is strongly linked to cervical cancer. Other bacteria, viruses, and fungi can introduce genetic instability that contributes to tumor growth. Despite these risks, scientists estimate that up to 40% of cancers could be prevented through lifestyle changes such as a healthy diet, regular exercise, and avoiding harmful exposures. Advances in research technology are helping scientists better understand how environmental factors alter genes, leading to new strategies for cancer detection and prevention. “Understanding the exposome-gene-cancer research axis will have a significant impact on public health and the development of more effective strategies for prevention and treatment of diseases.” The editorial underscores the urgent need for greater public awareness and policy action to reduce exposure to harmful environmental risks. As scientists continue to explore the connection between exposomes and genetic changes, their findings could revolutionize public health efforts and cancer prevention strategies. By recognizing the long-term impact of environmental exposures, individuals, communities, and policymakers can take meaningful steps toward reducing cancer risk and promoting healthier environments for future generations. The Mabamba Swamp is home to the dinosaur-like shoebill stork. But it wasn't always that way. In order to save it. Joseph Kimbagaya had to convince his friends, his elders, and ultimately the Catholic Church. In our season launch, host Ivy Prosper takes us to the lush Mabamba Swamp in central Uganda, home to over 300 bird species, including the striking shoebill stork. Hear how local leaders, tour guides, and conservationists, like Joseph Kimbagaya and Kasasa Hanington, have transformed this wetland into a thriving eco-tourism hub by reforesting, regulating harmful activities, and inspiring a love for nature. And meet the bird that inspired it all. This episode was written and produced by Evert Lindquist, with support from staff from Farm Radio International's office in Uganda, including Ecaat Stephen Justin and Pascal Mweruka. We aren't talking about global warming. It can be extremely difficult to keep a pure heart and mind before the Lord as we are constantly bombarded by images, media, cultural messages and other temptations from a world that does not think Biblically. So, how do we stop pollution?
Today's Passage: 2 Corinthians 3: 17-1817 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18 And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.Today's Prayer: Holy Spirit, we pray today that you would remind us that you are the very freedom that we thirst and hunger for. Through you, we are reminded of who we are – who we belong to – and the truth about us. We are free. Having been rescued out of the obligation and slavery and consequence of sin.And you, Holy Spirit, are changing us. Day by day. Degree by degree. Moving us towards glory until we are fully home with you. We offer you the places that we do not feel free, God. The places that we feel stuck. Or sideways. Polluted or perplexed. The places we feel fake or like an imposter. Take all of these and do that thing you always do where you remind us again of your mercy and grace. And help us to recall, today, that our freedom was a gift that was offered to you in great delight. You saw us at our very worst and moved into rescue us. May our life be lived in the freedom and truth of that great love. To you be the Glory, God. We pray this through the power of your very present Spirit. It was complete and perfect, and I appreciated many aspects of what you said, and will take them to heart. One was staying in association with those who are experiencing the happiness of hearing and chanting together, and how that carries us to a higher position, and also recognizing the pernicious effects of blasphemy. In the second-to-last sentence, you described blasphemy as a fall-down, and also that it makes us feel bad when we blaspheme. You had advocated for being aware of the effect of it. It made me think of the way we conduct ourselves in regular life. We become aware of what resonates with us. For instance, with our health, if we eat in a certain way, we know, although temporarily it may satisfy some urge, but later we'll feel crummy because we ate something that wasn't very good. And if we become aware of the fact that it's not a pleasant experience, blaspheming others, then we may hesitate just for our own self-preservation or knowing how it makes us feel. And I really liked how you described it as an expression of the polluted false ego. That phrase just makes me think of the persona, when I think of the personification of the false ego, expressing itself, maybe as a caricature, and being deeply polluted and pontificating on the faults of others. The carbon footprint of U.S. liquefied natural gas, or LNG exports is 33% higher than for coal, Cornell researchers report, showing the climate risks of a planned expansion of U.S. LNG exports. Also, the newest Popemobile for the Holy Father is an all-electric Mercedes-Benz, and most of the new U.S. Postal Service trucks are EVs, too. We talk about the shift to EVs among the Vatican, Post Offices, and everyday consumers. And India's Yamuna River is considered sacred by some devout Hindus, who bathe in the river to cleanse their sins. But around New Delhi it has become polluted with raw sewage and a thick white foam linked to detergents flowing untreated from laundries and households. -- The Living on Earth newsletter now features new in-depth analysis and commentary! In this conversation, Andrea Donsky, nutritionist and soon-to-be Published Menopause Researcher, speaks with Mike Feldstein, founder of Jaspr and an air quality expert. They discuss the significant issue of indoor air pollution, which can be 2 to 5 times more polluted than outdoor air, according to the U.S. EPA. People spend 90% of their time indoors, so understanding and improving indoor air quality is crucial.Key PointsIndoor Air Pollution Sources: Common pollutants include cleaning products, smoke, off-gassing from new furniture and electronics, mold, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Cooking is identified as the largest source of indoor pollution.Air Composition: Air consists mainly of nitrogen (78%) and oxygen (20%), with trace gases. The importance of clean air is likened to how fish rely on clean water for survival.Impact of Renovations: Andrew shares his experience renovating his home with eco-friendly materials to avoid off-gassing pollutants. He emphasizes the lingering effects of indoor pollutants after renovations.Ventilation Importance: Effective ventilation is essential to reduce indoor pollutants. Many homes have poorly functioning vents that do not vent air outside, which can exacerbate air quality issues.Practical Solutions: Regular vent maintenance and proper cooking techniques can help improve indoor air quality. Mike suggests annual deep cleaning as a good practice for maintaining a healthy environment.Sleep quality. Poor air quality can lead to respiratory issues, allergies, and discomfort, disrupting sleep. A study by Jaspr, showed that improving air quality led to individuals sleeping on average 25 more minutes per night, experiencing 18% more deep sleep, and falling asleep 5% faster. Overall, the episode highlights the need for greater awareness and proactive measures regarding indoor air quality to enhance health and well-being.SAVE: From October 25 - November 1, 2024, save 20% off at Jaspr.co with code Morphus. For decades, the idea of swimming in Baltimore's Inner Harbor was unthinkable. Polluted, filled with trash, sewer runoff making it unsafe for human contact. But on a sunny day in June, dozens of Baltimoreans took the plunge into the harbor's waters, marking a dramatic turnaround in the city's aquatic history. Today, we'll dive deep into the harbor's transformation, meeting the visionary team that turned this dream into reality and learning the science behind the cleanup. We'll also hear the story of Katie Pumphrey - the first person to swim the 24 mile stretch from the Bay Bridge to Baltimore's Inner Harbor. You're also standing on the most plastic polluted beach in the world. On June 10, in the working-class community of Curtis Bay in South Baltimore, over 50 residents, activists, and supporters from around the city marched through the streets of Curtis Bay to hold CSX Transportation accountable for polluting their community, homes, and bodies with toxic coal dust. Even after an expansive scientific study co-sponsored by the Community of Curtis Bay Association, the South Baltimore Community Land Trust, Johns Hopkins University, the University of Maryland, and the Maryland Department of Environment confirmed the presence of coal dust in the air of the South Baltimore community of Curtis Bay, CSX has denied culpability and called the study “materially flawed.” Residents say they're fed up with the company refusing to take responsibility for the coal dust, and with the city government for ignoring their cries for help for years, and they're not going to stay quiet. “We got to stand together for Curtis Bay, for South Baltimore,” one resident and youth leader, Carlos Sanchez, told the crowd. “We have to remove CSX for the health of our communities.” With other locals watching from their porches, sidewalks, and storefronts, the crowd marched from the Curtis Bay Rec Center all the way up to the gates of the CSX terminal. There, they signed and delivered a giant “Eviction Notice” to CSX, a company that recorded over $10 billion in gross profits last year. In this on-the-ground edition of Working People, Maximillian Alvarez speaks with Curtis Bay residents on the day of the march and takes you to the heart of the action. Speakers in this episode (in order of appearance) include: Shashawnda Campbell of Baltimore Community Land Trust; David Jones, a resident who has lived in Curtis Bay for over 35 years; Angie Shaneyfelt, a resident who has lived in Curtis Bay for 17 years; Angela Smothers, a lifelong resident of Mt. It's important we don't forget what happened. Politicians destroyed jobs and increased costs. They made bad things worse with arbitrary rules, and on top of that, government probably killed people with its endless red tape. Let's remember politicians' incompetence and their insatiable wish to gain power over us. Let's never give them power like that again. It's saving us!” says author Johan Norberg. He explains why growth is essential to human progress, especially for poor people. “In poor countries, if you manage to grow by 4% annually over 20 years,” he points out, “that reduces poverty in that country on average by 80%. But DEgrowth activists insist that growth means “climate chaos.” They say a smaller economy would be “sweeter.” They say “We must urgently dismantle capitalism!” It's destructive nonsense. This video explains why. California promises to get 50% of their electricity from renewable sources. Now they deal with blackouts, rationing, and prices that increased 3x faster than in the rest of the US. They're right, but that doesn't mean we should fear it. ———— To get our new weekly video from Stossel TV, sign up here: https://www.johnstossel.com/#subscribe ———— The Teamsters are protesting self-driving cars, asking government for more regulation, hoping to stop AI vehicles from taking delivery, taxi-driver and truck-driver jobs. That's a fight that they can't win. Loom weavers, typists, telephone operators, bank tellers, and many other jobs were destroyed because of new technology. It won't stop happening, and AI will make it happen faster. But as people lose jobs, remember that so far, this creative destruction has led to people finding new, better jobs. Unemployment has been dropping, and wages keep going up! If history is any indication, AI will be a good thing. https://youtu.be/RIlnvrMa4GE?si=SqKEVPlqBEKVKOAJ Milei Takes Charge: Argentina's President Fights Socialism with Free Market Reforms John Stossel 932K subscribers Subscribed 33K Share 625,409 views Jan 30, 2024 Argentina's new president, Javier Milei, understands that the government cannot create wealth. ———— To get our new weekly video from Stossel TV, sign up here: https://www.johnstossel.com/#subscribe ———— That's why Milei campaigned with a chainsaw, saying he would cut the size and power of government. In the United States, attempts to shrink government haven't gone far, but in Argentina, Milei won by a massive 3 million votes. In just the first month of his presidency, Milei repealed rent and price controls and eliminated trade restrictions. Daniel Di Martino, founder of www.dissidentproject.org, who escaped Venezuela and became an economist in America, says it's impressive that Milei won by promising massive cuts. Spring is here, but while we're waiting for the weather to catch up, we're discussing early dating to get you back out there. An email from last week about accidental sexts reenters the chat when our first email asks about strange messages from men on dating apps. Are there really that many creeps out there, or is she doing something to attract them? The Awkward Encounter is more of a reassurance ask about where a situation left off. The next email comes from a man who met a woman IRL. He's not attracted to her now, but she seems cool and he saw an old pic of her, so would it be wrong to date her with a secret mission of turning her into his physical type? The episode ends with a “Red Flag or Deal Breaker?” about first date convenience, refollowing an ex on IG, and body counts. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
