I'm Chris, this is the Downtime Podcast and you're tuned into our Loudenvielle post-race show with Neko Mulally and Olly Morris. If you're listening, that means that like me, you probably LOVE the sport and want to know as much as possible about what's going on. That's exactly what we are here to do. Throughout the season, we'll be bringing you analysis and insights that you won't hear elsewhere. However, as you probably know, the mountain bike industry isn't in a great place right now and as a result, this series doesn't have any brand support. The World Cup coverage is the most expensive thing I produce, as it often includes travel and I like to pay the guys for the expertise that they bring to the table. I honestly considered not running the series this year, but I love doing it and from what all of us involved have heard trackside from the fans, you love it to. So I've decided to fund it myself, for now. But if this show means something to you, and you want to keep it going, then please consider supporting us over on Patreon. You can sign up for as little as £3 a month at patreon.com/downtimepodcast. That's less than the price of a coffee, but it makes a real difference. The more of you who chip in, the more likely it is that we can keep doing this. I know times are tight. But if you value what we're creating here, if it helps you stay connected to the sport you love, then now's the time to chip in and help out. Loudenvielle delivered a steep, dusty and beaten up tracks and the riders struggled to find the line between clean rides and enough aggression to be on the pace. We'll be talking about some of the breakthrough and standout rides from the weekend, alongside some of the controversy that surrounded some of the events of the week. There's heaps to dive into, so without further ado, here's Neko Mulally and Olly Morris. Podcast Stuff Patreon I would love it if you were able to support the podcast via a regular Patreon donation. Donations start from as little as £3 per month. That's less than £1 per episode and less than the price of a take away coffee. Every little counts and these donations will really help me keep the podcast going and hopefully take it to the next level. To help out, head here. After a whirlwind 2024 Season, we had the opportunity to sit down with Jordi Cortes of Fox Factory and Neko Mulally of Frameworks Racing to debrief on the latest tech, the incremental changes that riders are now making to maximize setup, and ask whether aftermarket performance devices are really worth it. Have we got to the stage where it isn't about only setting up your suspension well, but rather setting up your bike to get the most out of your suspension?

Did you believe the hype? Coming into the 2024 World Cup season, Asa Vermette was an obvious favorite in the Junior Men's category. He'd been fast domestically for a few years, and with the support of Frameworks and guidance from Neko Mulally and Angel Suarez, he seemed poised to have a successful debut on the international stage. Then, at the first round in Fort William, Asa waxed everyone by 6 seconds. You tack on the fact that he won after sitting on the couch for weeks prior healing a broken hip, and the hype became simple facts. The next generation is always faster than the last, and Asa is leading the latest charge. Fast forward to now, and we've been lucky to watch Asa and Max Alran exchange blows all year. Each has three wins, and Mont Sainte Anne was teeing up to be an epic final round between the two. Unfortunately, Asa's crash in Loudenvielle left him more battered and bruised than initially suspected, putting an end to his first World Cup season. A bittersweet conclusion to an otherwise successful year, we wanted to know how Asa felt about his season—the highs, the lows, the lessons learned, and the goals for 2025. We talked about a whole lot more, so enjoy getting to know more about the calm kid from Durango who's damn fast on a bike.0:00 - Intro1:37 - Why Asa isn't racing MSA4:24 - Injuries collected throughout the season5:19 - The balance of pushing and crashing8:06 - Did he feel the pressure going into the season?12:00 - Key takeaways from his first World Cup season 13:38 - Why keeping racing fun is key14:51 - Asa's pump-up music of choice 15:51 - Advice from Neko and Angel17:05 - How Asa gets up to speed and breaks down tracks21:10 - Favorite country he visited this year 22:50 - Favorite track of the year23:33 - Getting used to riding in the mud25:32 - Injury updates going into the offseason28:05 - How Asa passes the time when he's hurt 29:46 - Favorite Elite racer30:55 - Asa explains his nasty whips31:56 - Doing a flip in a race run??36:17 - Who's got the best whips?38:29 - Things to improve on this offseason40:22 - Training program chit-chat 42:21 - What Asa rides day-to-day42:04 - Asa's perfect riding day43:36 - Freestyle Asa44:52 - Winter riding plans45:48 - 2025 Goals46:49 - 5 Years from now, where will Asa be…

Alright, this weekend we're back in Leogang, a track the riders know well, with historically tight margins. The weather has swung between sunshine and storms all week, giving the riders constantly changing track conditions to deal with. Keeping it rubber side down has been a challenge. As always, we were treated to incredible racing and I'm joined by Neko and Olly to dig into what went on. So sit back, hit play and listen to this Leogang World Cup post-race show with Neko Mulally and Olly Morris. Today's episode is a little different. If you've listened to the podcast for a while, you'll know that it's very much not about me, but today it is. For a while now, Neko has been telling me that he thinks people would like to know more about me. I guess for some of you, you've heard my voice for years now and I've not shared a whole lot about myself. So I finally caved in and let Neko take control of the questions. We sat down in Fort William and chatted about my background in mountain biking, my previous career in automotive engineering and how I eventually came to start the podcast. Hear about the challenges of making a mountain bike podcast your full time job and where the podcast is going in the future. Hopefully you enjoy finding out a bit more about me and where this whole podcast comes from. So, it's time to sit back, hit play and listen to this episode with Chris Hall. If you haven't already heard of Asa Vermette, chances are, that's about to change in a big way this coming year. The 16-year-old Durango native has been making waves in the downhill scene since he was 14, showing up at pro races and beating some of the sport's top riders for the podium. He won most of his races this year, including the Enduro National Championship where he beat 3x world champ Richie Rude. 2024 will be the first year that he can compete in World Cups, where he'll be racing as a junior despite proving his ability to race at the top of the pro field. Earlier this year, he signed a multi-year deal with Frameworks, the team led by fellow downhill racer Neko Mulally. Asa joins Payson this week to talk about being one of the most hyped young riders the sport has seen in years. He talks about rubbing shoulders with his heroes…while standing next to them on the podium, and throwing backflips at Red Bull Rampage. He explains how Neko Mulally and the Frameworks team immediately felt like family, and how he plans to spend the $7,500 he won when he placed second at the U.S. Open this year ahead of the likes of Greg Minnaar and Jackson Goldstone. Payson also chats with Neko Mulally about when Asa first appeared on his radar, how his role as a mentor has been surprisingly emotional, and the moment when Asa's course record sweep at Snowshoe sent shockwaves through the pro field. There are few downhill mountain bikers that are so multifaceted as Neko MulallyRacer. Not only is he racing World Cups, but he also runs a race series, supports grassroots riding and racing, has his own brand and team, develops his own bike, AND somehow finds time to represent the riders' union and scout the next big thing in US downhill. In this far-ranging chat, we try to cover as much as possible knowing full well that might just be a thankless task.

It's hard to believe the first U.S. Open of MTB was held 20 years ago in 2023. These awesome brands make The B Practice Podcast possible!Maxxis | Industry Nine | BurgtecAfter the first stint of World Cup racing this year, we were overdue for a little #USDH coverage! Last weekend, the 2023 Gravity National Championships took place from Ride Rock Creek, North Carolina. Another bike park built by Neko Mulally and crew, the first time Nat Champs venue delivered quality tracks for downhill, slalom, and enduro racing. As always, Dakotah Norton brings you between the tape to break down his weekend, the track, and the current state of #USDH. Tanner Stephens and Jason Schroeder feed the questions, and the crew covers the rise and dominance of Asa Vermette, Rock Creek's World Cup-caliber DH track, the cost of racing USNats, first-time National Champions, why you should book a trip to Morzine, and why Dak was an hour late to record this episode. Enjoy!

Mountain bike suspension has improved immensely in recent years, but designing rear suspension kinematics is inherently a game of tradeoffs, with no ideal one-size-fits-all solution. Cascade Components founder and engineer Jimmy Davis saw an opportunity to make his personal Santa Cruz Nomad better for where and how he rides, and soon a new business was born, making aftermarket suspension links for an ever-growing range of bikes. And so we sat down with Jimmy to talk about suspension design and the inherent tradeoffs that come with each decision; what their links do and who they're for; working with Neko Mulally on his Frameworks DH race bikes; brakes & chain guides; and a whole lot more.TOPICS & TIMES:Origins of Cascade Components (1:46)First aftermarket link (6:42)Suspension design philosophy (13:11)Neko Mulally's custom links (26:38)North Fork Brakes (30:25)Chain Guides (39:36)Jimmy's Big Idea (43:23)RELATED LINKS:Introducing: Blister LabsGetting Here: Gunnison & Crested ButteThis Week's Gear GiveawayGear Giveaway / Newsletter SignupBecome a Blister Member / Get our new Buyer's GuideRegister for the 2022 Blister SummitBlister Mountain Bike Buyer's GuideEp. 101: Neko Mulally See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Neko Mulally has had a very successful career racing for some of the biggest teams on the World Cup circuit, so we were surprised — and excited — when he announced that he was launching his own team for the 2022 season, and racing a bike that he designed himself. So we had to get Neko on Bikes & Big Ideas to talk about how he decided to take on such an ambitious project; designing the bike(s) and working with Frank The Welder to build them; starting his own team; and a whole lot more.TOPICS & TIMES:Project origins & initial concepts (1:31)Making the leap & leaving Intense (16:00)Working with Frank the Welder (19:00)Design goals & tradeoffs (28:09)Going from kinematics & geometry to a real bike design (35:07)Testing & refining the design (48:37)Sponsorship & starting a team (59:00)Neko's Big Idea (1:06:17)RELATED LINKS:Neko's video series, FRAMEWORKSGetting Here: Gunnison & Crested ButteThis Week's Gear GiveawayGear Giveaway / Newsletter SignupBecome a Blister Member / Get our new Buyer's GuideRegister for the 2022 Blister SummitBlister Mountain Bike Buyer's Guide See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
When Neko Mulally got in touch to tell me that he was designing his own bike and putting his own programme together for 2022, I couldn't have been more excited for him. Neko has already build two bike parks, put together a race series and done heaps for US mountain biking in general, so you can bet that he's going all in on this one too. We sat down to find out where the idea came from, what drove him to do it and what it takes to pull all this together. Find out how much a World Cup season costs and what Neko felt he needed around him in order to perform. We chat about how Neko approached designing the bike and getting it built, as well as finding out when we might be able to buy one. Hear Neko's thoughts on the first rides on the new bike too. We'll be catching up with Neko throughout the year during our World Cup shows, but I hope that this chat whets your appetite for what Neko is up to and for DH racing in general. So sit back, hit play and listen to this episode with Neko Mulally. You can follow Neko on Instagram @nekomullaly and find his YouTube channel here. Cotic really are focussed on doing what they can for our sport and our planet. They have made me feel like part of the family and they take that same approach with all their customers. That customer focus has been really clear during the pandemic. With parts in short supply, Cotic will do everything they can to help you. They offer rolling chassis builds so you can swap over good parts that you have on your current bike. You can even send them parts you've sourced and they will build them onto your new bike for you. Handmade alloy downhill bikes, designed by Neko Mulally and fabricated by the infamous Frank the Welder will be hitting the World Cup DH circuit in 2022.
Neko Mulally is a professional downhill mountain bike racer and three time US National Champion. He's also the co-founder of Windrock Bike Park in Tennessee and is currently part of the Intense DH Factory Racing team. In this conversation, we ask Neko: How did you find your passion for mountain biking at such an early age? What's it like racing the World Cup on familiar trails at Snowshoe, West Virginia? What have you learned through the experience of building and operating Windrock Bike park? When you're not riding park, where do you like to ride? Do you have a favorite trail? Why do you think people are so interested in how much money professional mountain bikers earn? Did money play into your decision to pursue a career in racing? Do today's young mountain bike athletes have advantages or opportunities you didn't have growing up? Do you have to live at the base of a mountain resort to become a pro downhiller? How do you feel about crashing? Is it true that if you're not crashing, you're not learning? Do you have any tips for avoiding serious injury when you do fall? What does your preparation for the World Cup season look like? How do strength and endurance training play into getting ready for competition? What's are the best and worst parts about traveling the world to race mountain bikes? Visit NekoMulally.com to purchase this year's Bike Giveaway Fundraiser Poster and follow Neko on Instagram @nekomulally. --Keep up with the latest in mountain biking at Singletracks.com and on Instagram @singletracks Photo courtesy Neko Mulally. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/singletracks/support
