I'm Chris Hall, this is the Downtime Podcast, and you're tuned into your World Cup pre-race warm-up show with the one and only Chris Kilmurray. Before we get into it, a quick ask… if you enjoy these shows and want them to keep happening, we really need your support. This series is fully independent, we don't have brand backing. Putting it together means paying Chris, Neko and Olly for their time, and getting to races where possible to bring you the best coverage we can. It's a big commitment, and it only works because of you. Last season, a few hundred of you stepped up and made it happen and we'd love to build on that this year. So if you're into World Cup downhill and want the best insight going, head to patreon.com/downtimepodcast and support from as little as £3 a month. It genuinely makes a difference. We'll also be bringing back things like our mid-season Patreon hangout with Chris, Neko and Olly, so you can get involved directly too. Alright, round three is upon us and we’re headed to Leogang. The Monaco GP of mountain biking, with a track that, on paper is simple, but in reality is a tricky challenge for everyone involved. As always, Chris brings the insight you won’t find elsewhere. So sit back, hit play and listen to this Leogang pre-race show with Chris Kilmurray. Podcast Stuff Patreon I would love it if you were able to support the podcast via a regular Patreon donation. Donations start from as little as £3 per month. That's less than £1 per episode and less than the price of a take away coffee. This is the audio from a live streaming episode on June 3, 2026. Seguin Light Station, photo by Jeremy D’Entremont Seguin Island Light Station is about two and a half miles off of the mouth of the Kennebec River in Maine. The establishment of a light station on Seguin was approved by president George Washington in 1793, and the buildings were completed in 1796. The 53-foot stone tower that still stands was constructed in 1857 along with a duplex keepers' house. A new first-order Fresnel lens was installed, and that lens remains in operation today. The light was automated in 1985 and the keepers were removed. Concerned local citizens founded the Friends of Seguin Island Light Station in 1986. In February 1998, under the Maine Lights Program, ownership of the property was transferred to the group. There are two guests in the episode. Chris Hall was the registrar and curator of exhibits at the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath and he's now the historian for FOSILS. Tip Koehler is a retired Naval architect with 41 years in naval combatant design, manufacturing, and testing on Bath built ships. and is the vice president of the Friends of Seguin Island Light Station. Chris Hall — the Ecom Cowboy, former All-American offensive lineman at UT Austin, and the guy who scaled Bruce Bolt to one of Shopify's fastest-growing stores as a team of one — is as entertaining as he is tactical. Rawa Jawad Quinn is a dentist-turned-tech founder whose restless energy and refusal to be underestimated have shaped every chapter of her career. In this episode, she tells Payman about growing up in Chelsea after her Iraqi family fled Kuwait with nothing, studying in Liverpool, and working across 16 dental practices before channelling her frustrations into Medicube — a consent and patient communication platform built to give associates the consistency they've never had. The conversation takes some wonderfully unexpected detours into quantum physics, telepathy, AI-driven futures and the spiritual experiences that Rawa can't quite explain but absolutely trusts. There's also plenty of practical wisdom on occlusion, practice culture and what it really takes to bootstrap a dental tech start-up while raising a three-year-old without a nanny. In This Episode00:00:45 – Introduction and welcome00:01:25 – Growing up on the Kings Road and childhood in Chelsea00:03:30 – Studying dentistry in Liverpool and reinvention00:07:00 – Dyslexia diagnosis and learning differently00:10:10 – The itch beyond dentistry00:14:00 – Fleeing Kuwait, starting over in the UK00:16:25 – Why her parents' medical careers put her off medicine00:18:05 – Ambition, being underestimated and self-belief00:23:15 – Spirituality, connectedness and trusting intuition00:26:10 – Wanting it all — motherhood, marriage and a start-up00:31:00 – Lessons from 16 dental practices00:36:25 – Working in corporates and at Bupa00:41:20 – NHS vs private practice00:45:15 – The birth of Medicube00:48:30 – How Medicube works and pilot results00:55:55 – Finding a co-founder and the UCL connection00:58:50 – Funding through grants, awards and bootstrapping01:03:25 – AI, the Turing test and the future of work01:10:25 – Robots, relationships and what makes us human01:22:55 – Physics, multiverse theory and keeping an open mind01:28:40 – Blackbox thinking01:33:40 – A patient with buyer's remorse after crown preps01:36:55 – Occlusion, full mouth rehabs and the Dawson Academy01:43:20 – Tech conferences and the reality of being a founder01:47:05 – Fantasy dinner partyAbout Rawa Jawad QuinnRawa Jawad Quinn is a dentist based in Belfast, currently working at Bupa, with a particular interest in full mouth rehabilitation cases. What are the common arts, and why do they matter for classical education and homeschooling today—especially in an age of rapid technological change and AI?In this rich and thoughtful Homeschool Conversation, I sat down with educator, author, and common artist Chris Hall to explore how the common arts shape learning, character, and human flourishing. With nearly 30 years of experience in education, Chris explains how the common arts—such as cooking, agriculture, architecture, navigation, and craftsmanship—are essential to a full, embodied education rooted in reality rather than abstraction.Together, we discuss:What the common arts are and how they differ from chores, crafts, and technical skillsWhy the common arts have been lost over generations—and how they're being rediscoveredHow the pandemic reshaped our relationship with embodied skills and supply chainsWhy the common arts still matter in a world of AI and digital technologyHow common arts bring the liberal arts to life in classical educationPractical ways homeschool families can begin practicing the common arts at homeThree accessible common arts every family can prioritizeChris shares powerful metaphors, real-life teaching stories, and generational wisdom, reminding listeners that education is not about speed or efficiency but formation over time. As he puts it, we are “rebuilding a cathedral,” planting seeds we may never see fully grown—but which future generations will inherit. If you're a homeschool parent, classical educator, or lifelong learner seeking an education rooted in goodness, truth, and beauty, this episode will encourage you to start small, think long-term, and recover the arts that make us fully human.

From childhood memories shaped around a family dinner table to the intense kitchens that forged his career, Chris shares a story filled with grit, generosity, and the belief that food connects us all. You will hear how Muss & Turners, Local Three, MTH Pizza, and Roshambo came to life, why Chris never wanted to wake up at sixty and wonder what if, and how a tragedy inside their restaurant family sparked the creation of Giving Kitchen, the James Beard Award winning nonprofit that now serves hospitality workers across the country. This conversation explores the heart of Southern dining, the evolution of intentional hospitality spaces like Warhorse and Seahorse, the dishes you absolutely cannot miss at each of his restaurants, and why human connection sits at the center of everything Chris and his team create. A powerful episode rooted in purpose, humor, honesty, and the reminder that life is too short to wait for someday. Before you hit play, here's the headline — arguably the biggest in CPG in 2025, and one you already know: PepsiCo acquired better-for-you soda brand Poppi for nearly $2 billion. What follows is a replay of a 2023 Taste Radio interview with founders Allison and Stephen Ellsworth, recorded back when Poppi was still firmly in disruptor mode — scaling fast, breaking rules, and taking direct aim at Big Soda. In the conversation, the Ellsworths trace Poppi's evolution from a scrappy gut-health drink into a modern soda brand built for culture, not compromise. They discuss launching amid the chaos of COVID, betting early on TikTok, and choosing bold cans and great taste over "health-halo" minimalism. The entrepreneurs also share a rare, candid take on founder ego — why they handed the CEO reins to an experienced operator, how they professionalized early, and what it really takes to scale from zero to thousands of doors without losing the magic. Listen closely and you'll hear the blueprint for the PepsiCo deal years before it happened: a brand that tastes great, moves at the speed of culture, wins both online and in-store, and isn't afraid to call itself soda again. Show notes: 0:25: Interview: Allison & Stephen Ellsworth, Co-Founders, Poppi – The Ellsworths reflect on Poppi's seven-year journey, from its origins as Mother Beverage to its reinvention as a colorful, prebiotic soda positioned to challenge legacy soda brands. They discuss relocating from Dallas to Austin to tap into a stronger entrepreneurial ecosystem, balancing hypergrowth with family life, and navigating the operational challenges of scaling during the pandemic. The founders also explain their emphasis on professionalizing the business, including their decision to bring in seasoned operator Chris Hall as CEO and redefine their own roles, prioritizing long-term scale over founder ego while maintaining creative control and brand vision. The interview also highlights Poppi's digital-first growth engine, particularly its early and unconventional embrace of TikTok, which helped the brand build massive organic reach, cultural relevance, a deeply engaged community and fueled explosive trial across Amazon and DTC before accelerating Poppi's expansion into retail. Consumer insights reinforced the brand's direction: taste was the number-one driver of trial and repeat, enabling Poppi to confidently reclaim the word "soda" and position itself as fun, nostalgic, and culturally current – while quietly delivering functional benefits like prebiotics and low sugar. Brands in this episode: Poppi, vitaminwater, Bai, BodyArmor

In the UK and elsewhere in Europe, there is no shortage of fantastic beer festivals and events to keep the industry busy. And last month one fantastic addition to the brewing calendar returned for its third successful year. At Kirkstall Brewery in Leeds, brewers from across the land descended upon Yorkshire for ‘The Great Exhibition of Prize Ales'. A unique celebration of the history of brewing, Kirkstall challenged breweries across the UK to dig deep into their local history, and exhibit beers with a link to the past.Under the stewardship of brand manager Chris Hall and the team at Kirkstall, breweries such as Amity Brew Co, Anspach & Hobday, Buxton, Colbier, Lost Cause, Northern Monk and Theakston joined in to showcase a raft of excellent beer. As part of Kirkstall Brewery, Chris has not only worked on such fantastic initiatives, he's helped develop and convey the story behind the brewery and its beers on a broader basis, too. But before joining the revered Yorkshire brewery Chris was also part of other respected breweries. And in his career to-date, he's become a sought after and popular part of the UK's beer and brewing fabric. In this episode, we speak to Chris about his admiration and love of locally-made, sessionable beer and how the UK beer scene has changed and evolved during his time working in it. He outlines that when it comes to showcasing your brewery's brand, it should communicate your attributes and values and we also discuss why you should always consider the brand story that you want people to know.

Bonjour! We're back for the second part of our deep dive into understanding pride from a biblical perspective. So, grab your favorite iced drink, settle in, and let's talk about humble pride rooted in the Lord and how we can navigate the delicate balance of pride and humility. Pride comes in different shapes and sizes. It's not all bad! In this episode, we unpack the distinctions between positive, humble pride rooted in God and the not-so-great, self-centered pride. Understanding this balance is key to our journey in faith. Stephanie encourages us to take pride in the impactful work we do in the name of Christ. Scripture reminds us to celebrate the positive impact of our efforts in serving the Lord and spreading his love. One nugget of wisdom that really struck a chord is the idea that we can be proud of imperfect efforts. Embracing our flaws and still finding reasons to be proud is a beautiful reminder of God's grace and how, even in our shortcomings, we can boast in the Lord through Christ. We also ponder the Biblical mandate of boasting in the Lord, breaking down the interconnectedness of boasting in various aspects of life and ultimately coming back to a boasting in and of the Lord. The Bible lays out a powerful reminder of where our true pride and joy should lie. Stephanie pointed out something truly heartwarming – it's not just believers who boast, but God himself boasts in us and is proud of us. How amazing is it to know that the Creator of the universe feels genuine pride in his creation? This part really hit home – we are called to be humbly proud, boasting in humility and the high position we hold in Christ. It's a powerful reminder of our worth and value in the eyes of the Lord. So, there you have it – today is a rollercoaster ride through the complexities of pride, humility, and boasting in the Lord. Our key takeaway? Embracing humble pride rooted in the Lord allows us to find joy in our work, celebrate imperfection, and hold onto our worth as beloved children of God. Until next time, keep embracing that humble pride, celebrate your journey in faith, and remember to boast in the Lord through Christ. Cheers to the adventures in faith! Do you enjoy Gospel Spice? Today's episode is a little different. If you've listened to the podcast for a while, you'll know that it's very much not about me, but today it is. For a while now, Neko has been telling me that he thinks people would like to know more about me. I guess for some of you, you've heard my voice for years now and I've not shared a whole lot about myself. So I finally caved in and let Neko take control of the questions.
