In the first episode of our new monthly series, Branding Bestie Chit Chat, I sit down with Lauren Braier to explore a question that's been buzzing around the boutique brand design community: What's the future of our industry? From online chatter to shifts in the career paths of high-profile designers, we dive into why it feels like so many business owners are struggling right now. Is it just the nature of social media amplifying the lows, or is something deeper happening in the branding world?Lauren and I share our predictions for 2025, including a possible decline in courses and education in favor of 1:1 coaching, the lingering effects of an oversaturated market post-COVID, and the continued importance of showing up authentically on social media (because being a faceless brand just doesn't cut it anymore). We also reflect on what these changes mean for our own futures as brand designers. Whether you're navigating similar questions or just curious about what's ahead, this episode is packed with insights, candid thoughts, and some serious bestie vibes.Grab your coffee, tune in, and let's talk shop!Guest Information:Guest Name: Lauren BraierGuest Business Name: Elby CreativeGuest Website: elbycreative.comGuest Instagram: @elbycreativeConnect With Us:Our Free Facebook CommunityOur WebsitePodcast InstagramTags:designer, design, brand design, brand identity design, design studio, design business, graphic design, brand designer, better podcast, brand designer podcast, logo design, brand identity design

This week, The Creative Boom Podcast brings a ray of sunshine with Christopher Doyle, the award-winning founder and creative director of Christopher Doyle & Co., based in Sydney, Australia. Over nearly two decades, Christopher has built an impressive career filled with accolades, global talks, and a reputation for bringing a candid and refreshing perspective to the creative industry. In this episode, Christopher shares his reflections on what he calls "The Great Unknown", an honest exploration of the pressures and challenges facing modern designers today. He speaks openly about the overwhelming nature of constantly being exposed to others' work and the struggle to remain relevant in a fast-paced, youth-driven industry. Christopher sheds light on how social media serves as both a source of inspiration and an anxiety-inducing force, creating a delicate balance between its benefits and drawbacks. Christopher's approach to design is rooted in honesty and transparency, rejecting performative processes in favor of genuine client relationships and adaptable workflows. He explains why staying lean and agile as a small studio can often be more effective, particularly in today's challenging economic climate. Reflecting on his years of experience, he highlights the importance of embracing nostalgia, finding balance in creative work, and fostering a collaborative, open environment that prioritises authenticity over appearances. A key theme in this conversation is the personal growth that comes with experience. While Christopher acknowledges that confidence grows with age, insecurities about one's work never fully disappear. Instead, they fuel the pursuit of excellence and help maintain a balance between anxiety and complacency. Christopher also reflects on his superpower—follow-through—a skill that ensures he delivers on his ideas and brings creative visions to life. Throughout the episode, Christopher shares practical insights, including recent revelations as he approaches his fifth decade. His perspective is an inspiring reminder that honesty and transparency in creativity resonate far more than a polished facade. This episode offers a refreshing and candid take on navigating the complexities of the creative industry while holding onto passion and purpose. Whether you're a designer, a studio leader, or simply curious about the realities of modern creativity, Christopher Doyle's insights are bound to resonate.

In this conversation, we're joined by Trevanna Frost Grenfell. Trevanna is faculty at reNourish Studio as well as working with businesses and organizations independently on developing self-organizing potential through application of living systems thinking and developmental processes to their work. She has a background in nonprofit strategic consulting work, but pivoted to organizational development in her current form when she encountered the work of Carol Sanford in 2016, since she found that the methodology and thinking of this regenerative community was the missing piece in much of her previous organizational work. Layering the rigorous application of the principles or regeneration into the practical application of business and organizational leadership development allows Trevanna to work with teams and organizations to re-inspirit their work and to grow into the next levels of their potential within the systems of our world -- many of which deeply need regeneration and restructuring. Trevanna also has academic training in conflict resolution, mediation, and negotiation with international NGO and community partners and graduate study in "Leadership for Sustainability", and she interweaves her business consulting work with her deep personal experiences of wildlife tracking, wilderness guiding, and community-building in connection with the natural world around us. What role can you and your work play in supporting the systems evolutions that are imperative in our current world? In this conversation we discuss changing systems, the “problem” with problem-solving and the need for creativity, mentorship, the development of human potential, and the evolution of business paradigms from profit-driven to purpose-driven. What does all this mean for the design industry? How can this shift dramatically impact the way you work? How can this impact your career, your thinking, your decision making, your community, your wealth, and your fulfillment? Please tune in to this episode of The Building BITE Podcast, as we hear from industry experts about key topics to help you be successful. The Building BITE host Mike Diercksen, CRIS, welcomes Nick Caravella, AIA, NCARB, NOMA, Director of Growth and Industry Strategy at Avicado Construction Technology Services. We begin the episode by discussing Nick's professional career. He initially started working as an Architect out in Denver Colorado but found himself feeling compelled to elevate the industry at large. To do so, Nick joined Avicado where he helps streamline owners' technology integration with various industry stakeholders and ultimately enhances the world of design and construction. Before we wrap up the conversation, Nick leaves us with three key takeaways. 1. There Is No Substitute for Good Planning: 95% of the industry data currently being collected is unstructured, meaning there is no clear-cut plan for how to optimize that data. Take the time to get ahead of the curve by reviewing your data and creating a road map for the “how” and the “why”. This will pay dividends when AI and other automations become even larger fixtures within the construction and design industry. 2. Who Else Needs to be at the Table? Nothing in the Construction and Design Industry happens in a vacuum, and while deadlines are tight, it is important to look around and make sure you are bringing in the right people. Seeking input from various stakeholders in the project along with industry experts will help you troubleshoot a wide range of problems before they happen, while keeping your team within their areas of expertise. 3. We had a little glitch in the matrix yesterday evening and we dropped an episode that is actually not part of the Zweig Letter Podcast. We apologize for any confusion that this caused. First time in 8 years this has happened to us. The good thing is that the topic of the other podcast is totally germane to the Design Industry space so there is that! ;-). If you listened to it already and enjoyed the episode that is great. If you didn't hear it but want to feel free to download it HERE. It's from another podcast we do called I am Northwest Arkansas and the episode focuses on New Localism and the Missing Middle Housing issue here in the U.S.. It's definitely related to the Design Industry but it was not a TZL podcast episode.Apologies again,Randy WilburnHost

In a recent episode, Doug asked a question that sparked considerable discussion: should a college degree be mandatory for the NCIDQ exam, or if work experience and apprenticeships be adequate? Responding to insightful listener feedback, Doug invited Jon Otis, a distinguished figure in interior design advocacy and a Professor, to explore the issue further. The feedback varied; some listeners supported alternative licensure paths for their diversity and affordability, while others advocated for the necessity of a bachelor's degree due to the rigor of formal education. This sparked a broader conversation between Doug and Jon about the merits of formal education versus learning through experience.Do you have a hot take? Hello and welcome back to another episode of the Design for the Creative Mind podcast! I'm your host, Michelle Lind, and today I'm thrilled to have Jessica Harling with me. Jessica is a passionate ringleader and dynamic problem solver, known for her work with Behind the Design. We dive into the concept of personal branding, discussing the phrases Jessica uses to summarize her personal brand. Have you considered the phrases that describe you in a heartbeat? It's an interesting perspective that we explore. The podcast takes a fun turn as we recount how Michelle and Jessica first met at Luann Live in Orlando. Despite a rescheduled podcast interview, their chance encounter was a delightful surprise, emphasizing the small, interconnected nature of the interior design world. Jessica introduces her company, Behind the Design, which focuses on building dream teams in three key ways: finding top talent, providing training for comfort in roles, and developing processes for long-term success. The discussion delves into recruiting beyond designers, encompassing various roles within the interior design business, from admin positions to project managers. Jessica shares her journey into the industry, stemming from her family's window covering business in Chicago. As a fourth-generation member, she was involved in operations and developed a passion for paving the path behind her, ensuring others wouldn't face the same struggles. The conversation turns to the generational gap in the design industry, where Jessica noticed a divide between traditional knowledge and modern tools. This realization fueled her mission to bridge the gap, leading her to consult and eventually establish Behind the Design. We explore the direct impact of Jessica's work, emphasizing the importance of bringing fresh perspectives into the industry. The discussion touches on the value of diverse skill sets and the need to innovate by incorporating different viewpoints. We discuss the challenges faced by business owners in the interior design industry, focusing on finding, training, and retaining talent. Jessica's insights shed light on the holistic approach she takes, addressing both people and processes to drive business growth. I'm Josh Cooperman, host and publisher of Convo By Design with something brand new for you. A Monday episode of the show, called The Design Messengers. I think you're going to like this for a number of reason not the least of which is that this is going to make your design business stronger because together, we are going to start thinking differently about this industry and ways to do it better, faster, smarter. Let me remind you, I'm a journalist, not a designer, and certainly not a consultant, I have interviewed some of the very best in the business and have shared techniques, strategies and ideas that allow you to execute better on your design business. Or, if you are a consumer, of which I hear from many who listen to the show, you know this helps you select the right creative for you, interview designers with a keen understanding of what you want which allows you better to select who is going to be your best partner. I have said this a few times and that is one of the main drivers for launching this new brand extension of the podcast. Podcasts are fantastic for learning, entertainment and companionship. What do I have against consultants? Nothing at all. I think business advice is one of the most valuable things you can do to grow a strong and healthy business. Why would you take the advice of a marketer/ consultant who doesn't really know the technical side of your industry? A former designer who couldn't make it in the business but instead decides to host a podcast to tell other designers what they couldn't do or starts a consulting business to share the in's and out's of a business that has dramatically changed since they were in the game? Does this sound mean? It's not intended to be. It is intended to make you think about the information you consume and the purpose it is intended to serve. Let's be clear, Convo By Design is about storytelling. I am a mirror on the industry with an opinion. I will continue to share my ideas with you, but I don't: Tell you what to do. Tell you what to buy. Tell you how to think. Tell you who is not getting the job done. Tell you how great I am, or all of the wonderful things I have done to make you believe me. Tell you to believe what I share with you. If you do, you do and if you don't, that's cool too. I will tell you about my experience and share it in context. That context is to position the next story. As a journalist, I'm not here to sell you anything. Not products, services, trips, club memberships, subscriptions. Nothing excepts stories. Stories about our incredible business researched and crafted to help strengthen our industry. Stories that I hope you find interesting and help you think differently about what it is you do. I present a thought and you have a reaction to it. Why is this important? I have told you about my time in radio broadcasting. When I first started, it was the early nineties, I was fresh out of college with bright eyes, a curious mind and wanted to succeed. Shortly after, the Telecommunications Act of 1996 was signed into law. This law deregulated cable service, made some technical changes with regard to censorship options parents could use on individual TV's but the big thing for me that I did not understand at the time was lifting of the cap on the number of stations radio operators could own. I'll go straight to the last page and share the ending. It killed local radio. the radio that was local, special and truly unique to your city. If you look at radio in any of the listenership ratings in major markets, medium markets or even most small markets, you will find the same 5 or 6 companies O/O the top stations in each market because they O/O almost all the stations. Radio was once a vibrant, diverse and varied group of individual operators who could be creative in their presentation of the music playlist, personalities in each daypart, the amount of time DJ's could talk between songs.

What a difference a few years makes! When we first had Maya Gold Patterson on the podcast back in 2016, she was a product designer in Chicago. Since then, she's moved out west and has held down design leadership positions at two of the most well-known tech companies on the planet — Twitter (now X) and Facebook (now Meta). And after a recent stint as VP of Design at Riverside.fm, Maya's facing one of her biggest challenges yet: quitting her job and embarking on a journey of self-discovery and career exploration. We caught up and talked about her recent decision, and about how it's left her feeling about Big Tech and about her future. But we also spent time looking back at her tour of duty at Facebook and Twitter, and she spoke about the lessons she's learned, the products she's built, and the importance of making choices that align with her personal goals and values.Maya is proof that taking a chance on yourself is never a bad idea, so if you're feeling burnt out or unsure about your career direction, then this episode is a must-listen!LinksMaya Gold Patterson's 2016 InterviewMaya Gold Patterson on InstagramMaya Gold Patterson on TwitterHappy Paths: “Twitter Spaces with Maya Gold Patterson”For a full transcript of this interview, visit revisionpath.com.==========Donate to Revision PathFor 10 years, Revision Path has been dedicated to showcasing Black designers and creatives from all over the world.
