EP-240 SLOW TRAVEL, DEEP CONNECTIONS: Hiking Europe with Cassandra Overby

In this episode of the 10Adventures podcast, we are joined by Cassandra Overby, writer, traveler, and author of Home Base Hiking Europe. Cassandra challenges the traditional “see everything” approach to travel and introduces a more meaningful, grounded model: choosing a single village or valley as your base and exploring through daily hikes. Cassandra shares how her philosophy of slow travel grew out of a “travel breakup” in her twenties and evolved into a new way of moving through Europe — one that prioritizes connection, culture, and authentic local life. She explains why small villages offer richer experiences than tourist hotspots and how travelers can blend hiking, culture, food, and community simply by slowing down. From the Dolomites to the Somme, the Piedmont to Provence, Cassandra walks through some of her favorite home-base regions across Europe — and the unique stories, landscapes, and local interactions that make them come alive. This episode is full of practical insights and deep reflections on how to travel better, notice more, and build real connections along the way.

Have you ever put off a dream because of your weight? That was Dr. Marie Strenger's reality as well. As an emergency room physician, she spent years caring for everyone else while her own needs kept getting pushed aside. Between exhausting shifts, stress, and that familiar "I'll start again tomorrow," she felt stuck—until she discovered a different path. Through the Shift Weight Mastery Process and hypnosis, Marie began making simple mental and habit shifts: a quick meditation in the car after work, long ocean walks with her husband, and small daily choices that brought her back to herself. The weight came off, the food noise softened, and her energy returned. And then she celebrated in the most unforgettable way—by paragliding over the Dolomites in Italy, soaring into a new chapter with a lighter body and a freer mind. This week's episode, it isn't just about weight loss—it's about freedom, joy, and the confidence to say yes to the life waiting for you. They add a beloved city to their list and share favorite countryside regions Favorite Cities: Adding Venezia Beyond the Crowds: Kimberly and Tommaso admit Venice can be crowded. They share how to see it in a less crowded way, even during high season. Knowing where to stay and when to visit certain spots helps. A Unique City: Venice is unlike any other city. It feels enchanting, otherworldly. Walking narrow alleyways (calli) transports visitors back centuries. Engineering Marvel: The city's ingenious foundation system uses wooden pilings. These pilings are now as hard as concrete because they were oxygen-deprived for centuries. Historical Achievements: Tommaso shares Venice's contributions to Western civilization. Early system of checks and balances in government (675 A.D.). The Arsenal shipyard, the world's largest industrial complex before the Industrial Revolution (1104 AD). First street lighting ordinance (1128 AD). First state-guaranteed national bank (1157 AD). Invention of the elevator (1160 AD) for the Piazza San Marco bell tower. First government bonds (1171 AD) from forced citizen loans. The bill of exchange for international trade (around 1200 AD). Infused soap, inventing perfume and deodorant (1200s). First brick hearth with a chimney and flue (1227 AD). First child labor laws (1284 AD) for Murano glass production. Returning to Venice: Tommaso is a serious fan, therefore he plans on many returns. Favorite Countryside Regions The Dolomites: Kimberly's History: She has a long history of hiking trails and staying in refugios. She recalls picnics with friends in alpine meadows. Skiing was a frequent activity. Tommaso's First Visit: His first visit was last December. He notes the unique, jagged peaks compared to US mountains. Cuisine and Air: The Dolomites offer high-end, creative cuisine and excellent wines. The fresh mountain air is invigorating. Toscana: Val d'Orcia: Picture-Perfect Landscape: This area in southeast Tuscany is idyllic. It resembles a painting or a movie set. It defines what many imagine when they hear “Tuscany.” UNESCO Status: Recognized in 2004, Val d'Orcia is a cultural landscape shaped by humans in harmony with nature. This status ensures its visual preservation. No modern buildings or businesses will alter its appearance. Medieval Villages: The area has authentic villages like Montepulciano, Pienza, and Montalcino. Locals live in these villages so it's not just a tourist destination. Winding Roads: Narrow, two-lane roads without shoulders connect the villages. This maintains the beauty. Lack of streetlights at night makes driving challenging for non-locals. Wine and Food: Home to famous wines like Brunello and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. The cuisine features cured meats, ragu sauces, and pici pasta. Puglia: Distinct Landscape: Puglia stands out geographically. It resembles Greece, Turkey, or even the central Australian desert with its burnt orange soil. Architecture: The stark white Trulli buildings and Masserias contrast with the colorful soil. This creates a unique landscape. Kimberly's Favorite Cuisine: Puglia's cuisine is Kimberly's favorite in Italy. They use many vegetables in dishes. These vegetables grow in the region's rich soil. Wines and Bread: The region produces diverse, full-bodied wines such as Primitivo and Negroamaro. Tommaso notes that their friend “Breadbasket Bridget,” claims Puglia has the world's best bread. Growing Popularity: Puglia offers fewer crowds, different cuisine and wines, and unique places to stay. The refreshing sea breeze adds to its appeal. Kimberly and Tommaso plan to discuss their favorite experiences or meals in the next episode.

Limestone is far more popular and well-behaved, one of the most common stones in nature and in architecture. Dolomite, though similar in many ways, is one of the most difficult rocks to make on Earth. Even dolomite's name is a bone of contention. Today, we introduce both siblings to the show as we move forward in time, 3.75 billion years ago. Along the way, I'll give you a real experiment to try in the kitchen and we'll smash some stones together. Please Follow us on: Instagram or Facebook ! In this episode of Kimberly's Italy, Kimberly and Tommaso discuss topics from tourism's impact on the Dolomite mountains to online travel scams and cybersecurity issues. Key Points: Summer in Italy: Italians love the summer season for the outdoor activities like festivals, concerts, and dining. Many Italians consider summer their favorite season since they love the sun, the beach and swimming. Over-Tourism in the Dolomites: Mass tourism is impacting the Dolomite Mountains. Overcrowding is causing damage to private lands, leading to disputes between landowners and tourism groups. Farmers started charging fees to access paths on their property to make a point, and a cry for help. AI and Travel Planning: YouTube is facing a rise in AI-generated content, or “slop,” affecting travel information. AI-generated videos are tricking tourists into visiting non-existent places. There have been instances of AI scams causing disappointment for travelers. It's important to double-check travel information found online. Cybersecurity - Juice Jacking: Juice jacking is a threat where malware is embedded in public USB ports. Travelers are advised not to use airport USB chargers to avoid malware infections. The use of portable power chargers is recommended. Public Wi-Fi networks in airports can be unsecured and targeted by hackers. Final Thoughts: Don't be discouraged from the extra amount of travel planning due to unreliable information since it will be worth the effort when you are finally in bel'italia! Be prepared and informed about the latest developments with AI and misleading imagery.

Nearly 40 years ago, my friend and I were climbing in the Italian Dolomite… The Eldorado for mountain climbing and skying… It is so awesome and exciting to climb the vertical rock walls with a fixed steal robe… We climbed through the cave tunnels, constructed in WWI to kill the enemies… my grandfather was one of them… And then we climbed the Cristallo Cortina, slept on 3400m in an icy hut, and drinking tea… In the morning, we like to climb down….The first snow was coming down…It was very slippery, slowly we climbed down… Suddenly the weather changed, and it was snowing like crazy… For that, the Dolomite is famous, that from a blue sky, the weather can change to snowing within 15 minutes…Still, we kept climbing … the massive rock wall was very steep and also the track … we had to go along this wall, the path was 50cm wide, and you could look directly down 500m, one small step wrong … your life is over…And then an avalanche dropped down, the path was destroyed, and we are desperate…. My Grandfather, a great mountain climber, died through that! We were pressing our body against the rock, not to get hit by an avalanche… It was terrible…My friend said we have only one chance to climb immediately up to the hut… That means 3 hours up… We returned and tried our best to go up as fast as possible without risking to slip down ….After 2 hours, I got the infamous mountain sickness … I didn't mention anything, and I was climbing in a total trance, one step after the next… I knew I had the power to overcome everything… Don't care, just go… Even I was getting so dizzy that I puke, my heart was pounding like crazy…The last 500m was the worst … My friend saw me and said stop, you have to go down immediately… Never, I can't … we reached the hut, and I cried… and could not stop crying, it was too much… Quite a lot of mountaineers were sitting in front of the door, and I was crying, and it was so humiliating… They didn't care, many accidents happened … 2days ago, we had celebrated our 2.5-hour climb of the big 1000m wall, it was a record… even done by people from a flat area…  now I was crying and mountain sick…The defeat can come every moment in our life without any warning… Be prepared, and bragging makes everything worse! My Video: Episode 6, remain humble https://youtu.be/i0J0uGRgEfoMy Audio: https://divinesuccess.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/Podcast.B/Episode-6-remain-humble.mp3

We've regularly mentioned our Learning Performance Benchmark over the years, and we dedicated an entire episode to 'The value of benchmarking' back in 2021.  So, naturally, we were intrigued when David James released the 'L&D Maturity Model', and wanted to invite him onto the show to discuss it. This week on The Mindtools L&D Podcast, David joins us to explore: Why David developed his maturity model, and what makes it different The limitations of self-assessment-based models What practitioners can expect to get out of benchmarking How L&D teams can move up the levels of the model and increase their maturity. You can find out more about The L&D Maturity Model here. You can find the Learning & Development Podcast, 'wherever you get your podcasts'. In 'What I Learned This Week', Anna explained the history of 'via ferrata', following her holiday in the Dolomites. David talked about 'imaginal discs' in butterflies. After weeks soaking in Italy's lakes, mountains, cities, and countryside, we are back—and we've got stories. From misty lakeside mornings in Lake Garda to harrowing, almost-died-on-a-mountain Jeep turns in the Dolomites, this is a full-bodied recap of their three-week Italian adventure. Whether you're dreaming of Florence, fantasizing about spa days, or just here for the unfiltered travel laughs, this episode will transport you. You'll also get a dose of cultural reflection, some wellness wisdom from the Alps, and why sometimes the most luxurious thing you can do... is slow down.   Some key takeaways from this episode include: Slowing down isn't lazy—it's powerful. The Italian pace reminded us how beauty, wellness, and relationships thrive without the rush. Where you are changes who you are. Culture influences energy, and immersing yourself in a place like Italy can shift your mindset toward care, connection, and consciousness. Nature recalibrates you. Whether it's a mountaintop hike or a boat on the lake, the outdoors offered perspective we didn't know we needed.

Join me in the foothills of the Dolomites for a warm, funny, and surprisingly philosophical conversation with Mauricio Arias — Graphistudio's strategist, storyteller, and, as I've dubbed him, their “Product Philosopher.” We dig deep into why printed work still matters in a digital world, how to make your images sing in print (and what that print will brutally reveal), and what photographers need to believe if they want clients to invest in heirlooms, not hard drives. There's laughter, there's wine (not during the recording, I promise), and there's a lot of heart. This one's for anyone who's ever asked: does my work really need to exist on paper? (Spoiler: yes. Yes it does.) Links: Graphistudio: graphistudio.com Mauricio Arias: mauricioarias.art   What Graphistudio Can Teach Us About Craft, Confidence, And Creating Heirlooms Featuring Mauricio Arias – from Episode 165 of the Mastering Portrait Photography Podcast This summer, I found myself at the foot of the Dolomites, tucked inside a sun-drenched meeting room at Graphistudio HQ, chatting with the wonderfully philosophical Mauricio Arias. He's part strategist, part designer, part storyteller—now officially dubbed (by me) the Product Philosopher of Graphistudio. We've used Graphistudio products for over 15 years. Our clients love their albums and wall art. We love their consistency, their craftsmanship, and their beautifully obsessive attention to detail. So when Mauricio and I sat down for a conversation, I had one question in mind: Why does print still matter in a digital world? Mauricio's answer was simple and heartfelt: because photographs are meant to be held. He spoke about growing up with albums on the coffee table and family portraits on the wall—how physical images root our memories in something real. But what stuck with me most was this: "Printing reveals both the beauty and the flaws." A great print will elevate your best work, but it also exposes any cracks in your post-production. It's humbling. And it's powerful motivation to keep improving. We talked about calibration (yes, you need it), about photography as an emotional craft, and about the importance of believing in what you offer. Because if you don't believe your work belongs in an album or on a wall, how will your clients ever believe it? We also touched on the future—on AI, on trust, and on the rising value of human, handmade, tangible things. Heirloom prints are becoming more important, not less.

In this episode, Kimberly and Tommaso share their experiences in Treviso, Italy, offering travel tips and historical insights. They explore Treviso's charm, cuisine, and proximity to other Italian destinations. Key Points: Treviso: An Unheralded Italian Gem: Treviso is near Venice, offering similar canals and architecture but with fewer tourists. Despite attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors, it remains less crowded than Venice. Treviso's blend of canals, medieval palaces and colorful facades create a visually appealing experience. Travel Tip: Photograph Everything: Document rental car damage with photos of the car, the other driver's information, and interactions with rental agencies. This precaution can help resolve potential disputes with rental car companies. Historical and Cultural Highlights: Porta San Tommaso: An ornate gate featuring the Venetian lion, showcasing the city's history. Fontana Delle Tette: The Fountain of Breasts, a sculpture that once spouted wine during the election of a new mayor, symbolizing the city's rich past. Cuisine and Wine of Treviso: Prosecco: The popular wine of the Veneto region, with vine-covered hills recognized as UNESCO World Heritage sites. Incrocio Manzoni: A local white wine similar to Riesling, enhancing the region's diverse wine offerings. Episode Highlights: Memorable aperitivo experiences include both elegant settings under arcades and laid-back atmospheres. The Compton's Cafeteria Riot Play, with Shane Zaldivar and Saoirse Grace, Part 1 (S7E16)

Saoirse Grace was one of the first successful in vitro pregnancies in Massachusetts. In this episode, Saoirse is joined by her Compton's Cafeteria Riot play costar, Shane Zaldivar. The two share short versions of their respective life stories and how they got to the Bay Area and San Francisco. Then we dig into the history of the Compton's Cafeteria riot, followed by a conversation on the play about the riot, their roles in it, and the actual lived experiences of trans people today. Saoirse, who plays Collette in the play, was born in Boston and grew up a little there, and a little in San Diego. But she got into some trouble in school and was sent to reform school in Austria, near her ancestral homeland in the Dolomites. After high school, not exactly wanting to come back to the US, she went to France for college, where she studied Spanish language literature. This whole time, Saoirse was a professional actor. She started acting in third grade. By seventh grade or so, she knew that acting was something she loved to do. After about a decade of just acting, Saoirse joined an aerial circus, where she was a trapeze artist for a group in Texas called Sky Candy. After a few years in Austin, working and doing circus performances, Saoirse came to San Francisco to go to law school. She says, perhaps half-jokingly, that she still wanted to perform, but to do so in a way that made more money than acting. She went to USF and did some police accountability work, but ultimately, practicing law didn't work out. And so, after a short time in Las Vegas doing porn and sex work, Saoirse came back to The Bay to do a PhD program to become a professor. It was another opportunity to have an audience, but to also make more money than other performing careers. But that also didn't pan out. This run with the Compton's Cafeteria Riot play is Saoirse's first foray back into acting in more than a decade. Backing up a little, I ask Saoirse about her first move to San Francisco and what she thought of it. She shares the story of leaving Austin, packing up as much as she could fit on her bicycle in Seattle, and riding down the Pacific coast to get here. Wow. At the end of that roughly 1,000-mile ride, she arrived in The City during the Pride parade in 2013. The timing! She soon found work as a bicycle mechanic, something Saoirse still does more than a decade later. Then we get to know Shane Zaldivar, who plays Rusty in Compton's Cafeteria Riot. Shane was born and raised in Florida, where she spent time between there and Belize, where a lot of her family is from. Her mom had Shane when she was relatively young, and so she spent a lot of time with her mom's family, both in Belize and in the US. Life in Florida was rough for Shane. She was bullied a lot early in life for her femininity. She says that when she visits now, she gets no joy out of the place except to be with family members. Belize was much more hospitable for her. She went to middle school and high school in the Central American country. But she ended up getting a scholarship to attend college at Florida International University, which she says is a diverse place. It was at college that Shane had several awakenings—her sexuality, her love of doing drag. But she says her biggest realization, the one that led her to the Bay Area, was around cannabis. Where she had previously bought into the idea that weed was this terrible thing, from the first time Shane tried it, it changed everything for her. Shane set out to learn everything she could about the plant and its medicinal, healing properties. She took a college class in Florida on hallucinogens and in that class learned about a school in Oakland called Oaksterdam University. That's what led Shane to The Bay. She raised money for the flight and registration at her new school. Once here, she patched together a liberal arts degree in Oakland, studying such topics as hospitality, theater, and anthropology. It was 2014, and she lived in Oakland, too. But it dawned on her later that San Francisco was only a bridge away. After moving around from hostel to hostel, she found an affordable place of her own in The City. It didn't take Shane long to fall in love with the Bay Area. She soon discovered events like Folsom Street Fair and spots like The Stud. She got a job in the Ferry Building and found a place to live, a place she still resides in 10 years later. She says that San Francisco is where she really got to explore her art and her activism. In addition to being in a band, Shane is the Pop-up Drag Queen, a local fixture who performs al fresco, usually in front of the Ferry Building. Then we talk about her foray into acting, something that came about relatively recently in Shane's life. From the first time she acted, back in Florida, she felt an intense joy that has stayed with her. It marked the first time she played with gender. Today, she identifies as a trans woman. The first run of Compton's, back in 2018, was her return to the art and her first really serious acting gig. We wrap up Part 1 with the historical event behind the Compton's Cafeteria riot, the basis of the play. It was August 1966, so nearly 60 years ago. No one is sure of the exact date, but it was a weekend. “The Tenderloin at the time was the Vegas of San Francisco,” Saoirse tells us. The neighborhood was also the only place that drag queens and trans women were allowed to exist. There was less of a distinction between the two back then—something important to understand, both in this conversation and also in the play. Similarly to the story of Stonewall in New York (which took place two years after Compton's), police did their best not to let these folks exist. The cops commonly conducted raids and sweeps, both on the street and in otherwise safe spaces, which Compton's Cafeteria was. But on that day in August 1966, a trans woman at Compton's decided to fight back, throwing a mug of hot coffee on an officer. Her tight-knit community had her back, as did Vanguard (a radical queer and trans youth organization), and the riot had begun. Check back next week for Part 2 with Shane and Saoirse. It's Monday, Let's raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It's time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let's begin Exploring the Wine Glass!  Today, we're heading to one of the most fascinating and picturesque corners of the wine world: Alto Adige. Nestled in the northernmost province of Italy and flanked by the dramatic Dolomites, this region is a true meeting place of contrasts—Italian charm with Austrian roots, loamy soils supporting both classic and lesser-known varieties, and a DOC that's currently 65% white wine, despite a much different past. I recently had the pleasure of attending a webinar with Susannah Gold and Mathias Messner of Cantina Bolzen, and let me tell you, Alto Adige is more than just breathtaking views. We'll explore what makes this region so unique, from its multi-lingual culture to its high-altitude vineyards, and of course, we'll chat about some standout wines—think Kerner, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, and a beautifully crisp Pinot Blanc. So pour yourself a glass, and let's head to the crossroads of cultures, climates, and some seriously impressive winemaking.  Slainte!    Find out more about Cantina Bolzen  here Music: WINE by Kēvens Official Video Follow me on Instagram!   Follow me on Twitter!
