Live races have been back for a bit, but for my husband Marco and for myself we are thrilled to finally have been a part of a race. On Oct. 17 Marco completed the Atlantic City Marathon and I finished the half marathon. This race was a long time coming as it was originally meant to be the New Jersey Marathon of April 2020, but like all things that were supposed to happen that year it was canceled. It was postponed several times and eventually canceled altogether but with the opportunity to transfer our bibs to the Atlantic City race series. It was a beautiful day, the weather honestly couldn't have been any more perfect. Marco had set some lofty goals for himself including an "A" goal of finishing in less than three hours to ensure a Boston 2022 bid. You will have to just listen to the show to see how that all went. He goes into detail about training and fueling. As for me, after suffering a stress fracture back in May I knew I would not be ready to take on my first full marathon in October so I had already changed my race from the full marathon to the half, but not without then setting my sights on finishing the New York City Marathon with a charity bib from Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (www.alexslemonade.org), and organization very near and dear to our hearts since our daugther was diagnosed with a spinal cord tumor when she was 12 months old. We both went in to the race with ideas of what how we wanted it to go, but somehow managed getting more out of than anticipated. Now we have our eyes on finishing New York City and reaching our fundraising goals to help fund important childhood cancer research, specifically research on spinal cord tumors so that no child will go through what our Izzy endures, and someday no parent will hear "your child has cancer." To support our fundraising efforts, you can donate directly to our fundraising page at: https://www.alexslemonade.org/mypage/2564362 You can also get yourself some really awesome Running on Optimism apparel at the following link, and 100% of proceeds will benefit Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation: https://www.bonfire.com/team-lemon-fundraiser/ Check out this video from ALSF on Izzy's story for inspiration: https://youtu.be/7fhpK2G5mdE Comments, questions, want to talk running with me for the podcast? Welcome to Episode 16 of the Eat for Endurance Podcast, featuring recreational cyclist and runner, Jacqui Cincotta. Jacqui is a former nutrition client of mine who worked with me back in 2018 on improving her everyday diet and her approach to sports nutrition during training and racing. I found her story to be unique and inspiring, and very much connected to food and exercise, so I asked her to be my first recreational athlete nutrition profile guest on the podcast!Jacqui lives in Arlington, Virginia, was in the military for many years and deployed overseas, and now works in the public sector supporting global health. She was diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) at the age of three, and has had many ups and downs with her illness. Thankfully, her RA has been in remission for the last two years, thanks to regular exercise and following a way of eating that works well for her. We recorded back in September, right before her first 26.2 attempt at the Marine Corps Marathon. Unfortunately, she was unable to finish. Here's her update:“It was absolutely pouring, and some guy (I am sure by accident) knocked into me about 15 or so miles in hard enough that I fell on my knees. I went to a medical tent and had a ton of ice put on my knees but couldn't finish the race. I was bummed, but still want to achieve my goal of completing a Marathon so I signed up for the New Jersey Marathon in April 2020. I did however run the Army Ten Miler a few weeks before and set a new 10 mile PR for myself. So I learned sometimes things go as planned, and sometimes they don't; shake it off and try again!”Great attitude, Jacqui - I know I would've been PISSED had that happened to me, but as you said, you just have to move on and try again. Good luck in NJ - I'm sure you'll crush it! Hope you enjoy this episode and that it helps motivate you to push through challenging moments, whether it's a tough workout, a medical issue, or any other obstacles you encounter. This wraps up Season 1 - thanks again for your support and looking forward to bringing you more content in 2020!Follow Jacqui: If you're a Peloton rider, her LB name is #Le_Chic_JQ Follow Jacqui on InstagramOther Announcements:Please show your support by leaving a rating and/or review on iTunes Music Credit: Joseph McDadeHave feedback? At (1:06:57) Farley has a story that breaches security protocol.
