When your running routes become maps of heartbreak, how do you find your way forward? Ultra runner John Calabrese takes us through his raw, emotional journey of rediscovery after losing both his relationship and running partnership in one devastating blow.John's story begins with a dream scenario for many runners—falling for a fellow ultra athlete who shared his passion, crewed his races, and built memories along countless miles of trails. Together, they conquered grueling challenges like running JFK 50 and the Philadelphia Marathon in a single weekend. But when their relationship crumbled, John found himself not only heartbroken but also stripped of his running identity and community. The collapse was total—pneumonia followed emotional exhaustion, friendships changed, and suddenly the routes that once brought joy became painful reminders of what he'd lost. Compounding his struggle, John and his ex continued living practically within sight of each other, making clean breaks impossible. Most devastating was losing a close running friend to an unexpected death around the same time, leaving John without his two most important running companions. What makes this episode particularly powerful is the honesty with which John discusses rebuilding. From struggling to find motivation to run alone again to carefully navigating race schedules to avoid painful encounters, he reveals the messy reality of healing within a close-knit running community. His journey back to consistent 70-mile weeks hasn't been linear, but it has been transformative. Now focused on giving back through Ainsley's Angels and targeting iconic challenges like Badwater 135, John is redefining his relationship with running on his own terms. His story reminds us that sometimes the longest ultramarathon isn't on any race calendar—it's the journey back to ourselves after loss.Have you ever had to rebuild your relationship with running after a major life change? Share your story in the comments and connect with others who understand the struggle of finding your stride again when the path forward seems impossible to navigate. Instagram:@breezytrailheadhttps://www.instagram.com/breezytrailhead?igsh=NDBhaG9wZmdrcGdxShoutout to :John Calabrese The Calabrese Family and Friends Ag-Gear Store https://www.aggearstore.com/Use Code: Milesmountains For 15% Off Alter Ego Ambassador: https://alteregorunning.com/Miles & Mountains Promo Code: Milesmountainsyr3Raising Awareness:Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW)Mental Health Send us a text

Today, we're kicking off a special series of episodes to recap the new research presented at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting, our largest orthopaedic conference. This year, over 20,000 orthopedic professionals gathered at the AAOS meeting in San Francisco to take part. The educational program was comprised of instructional course lectures, video theater, live surgeries, podium presentations and research posters. Over the next several episodes we're going to be reviewing seven sports medicine posters that were presented at the AAOS meeting. On this podcast we try to review the most updated literature on different sports medicine topics. So, reviewing some of the posters that were just presented at AAOS is particularly exciting for us because this is very new data.  So new that most of this data has not even been published yet. We're joined by Dr. Meghan Bishop to get her take on these poster presentations. Dr. Bishop is fellowship-trained, board certified orthopaedic sports surgeon at the Rothman Orthopaedic Institute in Philadelphia. After graduating from George Washington University Medical School, she completed her residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. She is the orthopedic medical director for the Philadelphia Marathon, Chair of the AOSSM Early Career Members Committee and is a member of the Editorial Board of AJSM and VJSM. She is very active in research, so we are excited to hear her thoughts on these posters over the new few episodes.

Hour 3: Drive @ 5 - Sergeant Betsy Smith of the National Police Association joins us to break down the history of the Thin Blue Line, the banning of it in Springfield Township and how that came to be, and other attack against the symbol across the nation. What will come of that? More on Sergeant Smith's background as well. The Mainstream Media is panicking as they have a floundering candidate with an even worse one waiting in the wings, so they have no choice but to turn up the hateful rhetoric. So Johnathan Karl is doing his part by releasing a book that has the sole intention of swaying voters away from Trump in 2024.  The Philadelphia Marathon will take place this weekend with a new non-binary category. How do you qualify for that? Mike is calling BS on CNN as they go after him ahead of the election next year. One of his former staffers says he skipped an evangelical campaign event in Iowa, but have they forgotten he had sister's funeral? Which Presidents have had encounters with UFOs?  Hour 4 - The Zeoli Show in-house economist Dr. EJ Antoni joins us to end the show and details how he's using the White House's own numbers to point out how poorly they handled the economy and the continued gaslighting of citizens that things aren't that bad. Terrible energy policies have crippled us but instead we bend the knee to foreign adversaries to pump more oil for us instead of doing it ourselves for cheaper. What is the ‘Death Cross'? Health insurance costs have “dropped” 35% over the last year? No way, find somebody who had their costs dropped at all this year. Donald Trump caused an uproar when he came to a UFC event at Madison Square Garden. Wrapping up early for Penn State basketball.

"The biggest takeaway is that I'm having fun. That is a huge thing! I forgot what it was like to just have fun with it and be playful and enjoy the ride." Maegan Krifchin, a professional runner for Atlanta Track Club Elite, had a big goal for this fall: run a personal best at the TCS New York City Marathon. She put all of her running eggs in that basket, training hard with that NYCM plan in mind. But come race day, things didn't go as planned at all. Maegan ran a 2:40:52, which was well off her goal time. She wasn't just unsatisfied — she wanted more, and she wanted it immediately. And so, Maegan decided to run the Philadelphia Marathon, just two weeks later. This time, things went much better. She ran 2:31:41, finishing in second place. Still, though, Maegan wanted more. And so, two weeks after that, she decided to head west in pursuit of a personal best. This time, Maegan lined up at the California International Marathon, where she got her day: She ran 2:29:21. A personal best. In this conversation, Maegan talks about how she managed to run three fall marathons without getting injured, and how she got faster each time. Plus, how she has stayed mentally sharp and strong, and her advice for staying in the race when the running gets tough. Maegan Krifchin: An Epic Marathon PR Story

Professional runner Maegan Krifchin wanted to make the 2022 NYC Marathon an epic day. A native of Long Island, the Atlanta Track Club runner visualized bettering her 2:30 PR (2021 Chicago Marathon) while also breaking the 2:30 barrier, cracking the top 10, and shining her brightest on November 6. That did not happen, and it was heartbreaking. But it led Meagan on a marathon adventure that would see her run the Philadelphia Marathon two weeks later, on November 20, almost grabbing the win, and then CIM in Sacramento, California, two weeks after that, on December 4. Along the way, Maegan realized the importance of shaking things up, being playful among the seriousness of big pursuits, and how going after wild goals can reignite your ambitions. She also got that sub-2:30 PR, at CIM! Maegan tells her story in her own voice. Today I am psyched to have my good friend, and occasional running partner, Ted Jordan on the show. Ted's journey as an amateur runner began the same way as most folks - he started running a couple times a week to stay fit while in his 20's. Things progressed quickly for Ted in his late 30's when he decided that he wanted to complete a marathon before his 40th birthday. From there, Ted improved every year and isn't slowing down anytime soon. In fact, he set a five minute marathon PR at the Philadelphia Marathon a few weeks ago with a time of 3:36! In this episode Ted and I talk about improving as we age, how he was able to increase his aerobic base in order to feel strong at the end of marathons, and the methods he uses to determine his marathon pace and pacing strategies. “Like any athlete or person, when you cross one task off your list you think, ‘I can do better.' After CIM, I feel OK and I ran what I ran but you know what? I probably can run faster. I felt very controlled and ran a very smart, conservative race where I knew I would successfully complete this task and this mission that I'm on.” Maegan Krifchin is a professional marathoner for the Atlanta Track Club and I decided to have her on because I needed to know more about the wild past 30 days for her. It starts on Nov. 6 with the New York City Marathon where she ran 2:40:52 in hot conditions. Two weeks later, she ran 2:31:42 to take second in the cold conditions of the Philadelphia Marathon. She capped off her year with a 2:29:21 in perfect conditions to finish 7th in a personal best at the California International Marathon, which also served as the USATF Marathon Championships. This PR was a long time coming for Maegan so I needed to hear more about her decade-long journey to this marathon threepeat. The Philadelphia Marathon is unique in its ability to provide big city race amenities coupled with an accessible, runner-focused event. This is your all-inclusive guide to Philly marathon weekend, from pre-race logistics to the post-race fanfare. Joining us is Philadelphia Marathon Race Director, Kathleen Titus. Kathleen has more than 25 years of experience in the marathon, ultra-distance and triathlon world, coupled with extensive work in event planning. She owns All Fitness Events, a digital marketing firm that specializes in endurance events. The Philly Marathon has special significance to me as the home of my personal best, so I was excited to meet Kathleen at the Endeavorun Boulder retreat last summer. Her energy, experience and attention to detail have made this marathon a top notch event. Kathleen and I discuss all aspects of the event, from pre- and post-race logistics to intricate details of the course itself, including: What makes the Philly marathon so unique The best way to get to the start line on race morning Why Philly is a top Boston qualifier What part of the course is most challenging The best pacing strategy for each section of the race How the race finish remains focused on the runner experience If the Philly Marathon isn't on your radar yet, you should definitely consider it! They make electrolyte drinks for athletes and low-carb folks with no sugar, artificial ingredients, or colors. And you can get a free sampler pack of 4 flavors and 8 individual packets when you pay $5 in shipping. Elemental Labs' products have some of the highest sodium concentrations that you can find. Anybody who runs a lot knows that sodium, as well as other electrolytes like magnesium and potassium, are essential to our performance and how we feel throughout the day. The citrus flavor has quickly become my favorite. I'm drinking one a day now to help me get enough fluids in our dry Colorado air. It's tasty and delicious and I find that I'm not peeing every 45 minutes throughout the day, which might be an indication I wasn't eating enough sodium. There's now mounting evidence that higher sodium intake levels are not unhealthy – and athletes need substantially more than your typical sedentary person. Of course, ask your doctor if you're worried. But for those athletes running outside in the heat, an electrolyte replacement makes a lot of sense. So check out Elemental Labs to try their new flavor or get a free sampler pack.  Thank You Melin! We are also supported by Melin hats! Quite possibly the best looking, most attractive hats I've ever worn, Melin makes premium hats for both casual use and for running. It was while running the Philadelphia Marathon that Charles Moore made the observation that gave rise to his upcoming memoir: Black People Don't Run Marathons. Whenever he encountered another Black runner in that race, they would give him “the nod,” an unspoken acknowledgement of his presence there. Reflecting on the experience, he realized that “there was a sort of diversity issue in endurance and distance running.” He had friends who exercised regularly, but none of them had run a marathon. “I thought,” he says, “maybe I can do something to inspire them to add that to their resume of things that they do to continue this journey of being physically fit and healthy.”  Within three years he ran 19 marathons, including five of the six World Majors.
