“  I never lost my ability to breathe. I never lost completely my ability to swallow. We had to adjust things for a little while. But I am a huge believer that being as fit at that moment as I was going to be all year—I needed that to get through what I got through and to be able to get up and moving again so quickly.”   Lynn Rogers had completed one IRONMAN triathlon and was training for another when her hands started to go numb. Next, it was her feet and her tongue. In the end, she'd be paralyzed from the chest down—the consequence of a progressive, chronic autoimmune disease called chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP).    Lynn entered rehab at the very hospital where she was working as a brain scientist, and though she regained her ability to walk and eventually to run, that was just the first step along a very long and bumpy road.    Through it all—successful treatments and failed ones, daily symptoms like numb and tingling hands and feet interspersed with more serious flares—she's continued competing. But now, her training is infused with a far greater purpose. She credits the fitness and functionality she had when she got sick for facilitating her recovery, and the joy and community she finds in sport for making each day all the more meaningful.    Lynn is an ambassador for Athletic Brewing, which in 2024 released an incredible documentary called Inches to Miles that chronicles her journey (and that of two other amazing athletes) to IRONMAN Lake Placid. In this episode—and the film—you'll learn the meaning behind Lynn's powerful mantra, “This is what we're doing now” and truly understand how, when it comes to chronic illness, there's always another chapter to the story.   Resources/links: Lynn's website, Instagram Inches to Miles trailer and full movie A Runner's World article Cindy wrote about Lynn in 2018   A huge thank you to LEVER Movement, the exclusive sponsor of season 8 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast! In this inspiring episode of "Find Your Finish Line," I sit down with Matt Long, a man whose story of resilience and determination is nothing short of extraordinary. Matt shares his journey from being a competitive IRONMAN athlete to surviving a catastrophic accident with a New York City transit bus in 2005. Despite being given a slim chance of survival, Matt's indomitable spirit saw him not only recover but also return to the IRONMAN Lake Placid finish line in 2009. His story is a testament to the power of setting big goals, embracing adversity, and the unwavering support of family and community. Matt opens up about the mental and physical challenges he faced during his recovery, including moments of deep despair and thoughts of giving up. He credits his comeback to the support from his family, the FDNY brotherhood, and the triathlon community. Matt's journey didn't end at the IRONMAN finish line; he went on to become a motivational speaker, author of the bestseller "The Long Run," and a world record holder in indoor rowing. His message is clear: adversity is a part of life, but it's how we embrace and challenge it that defines our path forward. Have you ever wondered about the life of a professional triathlete? In this podcast series, we interview current and retired QT2 Systems Professional Triathletes, exploring the path to earning (and maintaining) a pro license, the nuts and bolts of training and racing, and the ups and downs along the way. The guests also share how being a pro triathlete shaped their lives, and what advice they would give to their younger selves. Episode 9 features Jennie Hansen. Jennie's journey from newbie triathlete to professional triathlete was a rapid one. She raced her first triathlon in the fall of 2009. Just two years later, she finished as the second amateur at the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championships and earned her pro card. Jennie raced as a pro from 2012 through 2023, always as a QT2 coached athlete. In her early years as a pro, she took the overall win at IRONMAN Lake Placid, racked up multiple podium finishes and toed the line at the IRONMAN World Championships. After struggling with injuries for several years, she decided to retire from the pro field after her 2023 season. But rather than leaving the sport of triathlon, Jennie opted to race as an age grouper. Through this move, she has been re-energized in the sport. She raced frequently, including three IRONMAN finishes in three months - IRONMAN Lake Placid (2nd in AG), IRONMAN World Championship (top 15% in AG), and IRONMAN California (2nd in AG). She'll be back to the IRONMAN World Championship in 2025. Listen to Jennie's story about her decision to turn pro, the changes in the pro ranks over time, how she dealt with injuries and set backs, and her experience coming back to the age group field. Have you ever looked back at a day in your life, and said "WOW - I Can't Believe I did That!"? In this podcast series, listen to QT2 athletes tell the stories of how they achieved goals that they once never dreamed possible. Season 2, Episode 6 features QT2 athlete Anthony Chillemi, coached by Reem Jishi. As a younger adult, Anthony was a two pack a day smoker. In his early 20s, he couldn't run a mile without feeling like he was going to be sick. One day, he decided to quit smoking and start running. He started by running recreationally, and with time started run racing. A few years later, he began competing in triathlons. In 2017, started working with QT2 Systems Coach Tara Strassburg, and finished with an impressive time of 10:18 at IRONMAN Lake Placid. Around this same time, Anthony got married, bought a house and bought a business. Life was about to get more hectic. After taking a few years off from formal training, Anthony was itching to get back into it. Knowing that his time was more limited, he decided to focus on running. He came back to QT2 in 2021, this time working with Coach Reem Jishi. His goal was to qualify for the Boston Marathon and break the three hour mark. Over the next couple of years, Anthony made impressive gains. In March of 2023, he ran a 3:04:31, officially qualifying for the Boston Marathon. However, that time would not be strong enough to secure a spot at the 2024 race. This miss, made him more determined than ever. On October 13, 2024, Anthony ran a near perfect race at the Mohawk Hudson River Marathon, finishing with a time of 2:55:16, a PR of more than 9 minutes. This was Anthony's Greatest Moment. Listen to Anthony tell his story of how he achieved this goal. To learn more about QT2 Systems, visit https://www.qt2systems.com

Have you ever looked back at a day in your life, and said "WOW - I Can't Believe I did That!"? In this podcast series, listen to QT2 athletes tell the stories of how they achieved goals that they once never dreamed possible. Season 2, Episode 5 features QT2 athlete Isaac Ou, coached by Anne. On December 31, 2021, Isaac registered for IRONMAN Arizona. At the time, he was just twenty years old. He had never participated in a triathlon. He didn't know how to swim. He didn't own a bike. Less than eleven months later, Isaac crossed the finish line of his first IRONMAN in a respectable 13:01. In 2023, he started working with Coach Anne Basso, racing both IRONMAN Lake Placid and IRONMAN Arizona that year. Isaac bettered his time at IRONMAN Arizona by a whopping two hours! For the 2024 season, he set his sights higher and longer. His GREATEST MOMENT was completing the Starvation Extreme Triathlon in August. This race presents challenges from beginning to end with a largely self supported 2.4 mile dark swim, a 100 mile bike with 9754 feet of elevation gain, and a 25.3 mile run with 7,543 feet of elevation gain. Only 34 participants finished the race that year. 55 did not start or did not finish. Listen to Isaac tell his story of the day, and how he crossed the finish line of one of the most challenging triathlons out there. Isaac capped off his 2024 season the following month with the Double ANVIL ultra triathlon (4.8 mile swim, 224 mile bike, 52.4 mile run). For 2025, he is registered for the Quintuple ANVIL (12 mile swim, 560 mile bike, 131 mile run)! Isaac was obese growing up, and is clinically diagnosed with autism and OCD.  He believes that his his brain is wired to complete extreme endurance events.  Now fitter than the vast majority of people will ever be, he has found his home in the ultra triathlon community, and is continually exploring and pushing to places he never imagined. His story has just begun. To learn more about QT2 Systems, visit https://www.qt2systems.com

Season 2, Episode 4 features QT2 athlete Mariana Lara, coached by Dave Zimmet. On July 20, 2024 Mariana crossed the finish line at IRONMAN Lake Placid. It was a race she will remember for a life time. Not because it was her 15th IRONMAN finish. Not because of her time. Not because of her World Championship qualification. But because this was the race she beat cancer's butt. Mariana has been drawn to personal challenges and adventures her entire life. Over the past almost two decades, she has raced countless triathlons, including 4 IRONMAN World Championship finishes.  In the summer of 2023, she was doing prep work for what she thought would be a minor procedure when her pre-screen MRI revealed that she had Stage 1 ovarian cancer. Life changed for her on that day. After having major surgery to remove the cancer in the fall of that year, she still had a long road to recovery ahead. One day at a time, one step at a time, she made it to the starting line of IRONMAN Lake Placid.  Crossing the finish line was her Greatest Moment. The guests also share how being a pro triathlete shaped their lives, and what advice they would give to their younger selves. Episode 6 features Doug MacLean. In 2006, at age 26, without any significant swim, bike or run experience, Doug decided to enter the world of triathlon. He raced IRONMAN Coeur d'Alene and IRONMAN Lake Placid in 2017, finishing both in under 11 hours. In December of 2018, Doug decided to dedicate himself to training and racing full time.  After a couple of years of being self-coached, Doug came to QT2 Systems in 2009. Under the coaching guidance of Tim Snow, Doug raced his first Kona in 2010, and then in 2011, won the amateur race at IRONMAN Coeur d'Alene, earning his pro license. Doug jumped straight into the pro circuit, and earned his first paycheck in his second race. Doug raced as a pro from 2011 through 2019, with his most memorable races coming late in his career - IRONMAN Boulder in 2018, and Challenge Roth in 2019. Through triathlon, Doug was able to achieve his childhood goal of becoming a professional athlete. The guests also share how being a pro triathlete shaped their lives, and what advice they would give to their younger selves. Episode 5 features Vinny Johnson. Coming from a swimming background, Vinny raced his first triathlon in 1995, while still in college. After graduating, he fell out of his fitness routine and shifted to an inactive lifestyle. In 2006, motivated by the passing of his high school swim coach, Vinny returned the pool. Swimming was his therapy. Slowly, he re-found his routine, and soon after, looking for a challenge, he signed up for his first 70.3 triathlon. After several years of "ok" age group finishes, Vinny came to QT2 Systems as a Mission Plan athlete. Following a personalized training plan, together with coaching and nutrition guidance, and a focus on strength training, Vinny's performance steadily improved. In 2012, at IRONMAN Lake Placid, he won his age group and earned his pro card. Vinny immediately accepted his pro card, and went onto race 20 professional 70.3 and 140.6 events over the next three years. He was drawn to the hard races, and pushed himself to find his limits. He made mistakes, and learned from them. He won his final three races, and retired after his win at Beach2Battleship in 2015. Training for IRONMAN taught him that he can accomplish anything. Consistency breads improvement. Improvement breads confidence. Learn more about QT2 Systems at www.qt2systems.com Contact QT2 Systems at https://qt2systems.com/pages/contact

With five ITU World Championship titles, Nice long distance, a string of Ironman 70.3 victories, and a record-breaking performance at Ironman Lake Placid, wins at big nondrafting classics at Chicago and Alcatraz, and his domination of the French Iron Tour, his excellence in the sport is unquestioned. Beyond the race courses, his influence continues to shape the future of triathlon through his coaching endeavors. He was appointed an MBE in the 2000 New Year Honours for services to triathlon. Last week we saw IronMan Lake Placid won by Joe Skipper (smashing the course record in the process) but we didn't see Alistair Brownlee race at what was the final chance to qualify for Nice. This will mean that Alistair Brownlee will not be lininig up in Nice in September and might indicate that he is injured again.  We discuss this as well as all the action from WTCS Hamburg, whether we will see Gustav Iden race Nice, the problems being faced by British Triathlon like Georgia Taylor-Brown tearing her calf, no WTCS event there in 2024 and the PTO US Open (and much much more!) What a day!  This episode recaps Ironman Lake Placid, one of the most iconic Ironman races on the circuit. Angela was 4th female pro with a time of 9:32:23 and Amy was 10th in her age group with a 12:14:50 and got a Kona slot!  We start with race week, and then head into the race. Angela shares her race strategy, her goals, and some funny moments, including Angela's T1 mishaps, getting peed on during the bike portion (!!), and Amy's biofreeze moment on River Road. The best part about this recap is that even though there may often be differences in the way an age grouper and a pro approach and execute an Ironman, we are all still on the same course, on the same day, experiencing the highs and lows, the challenges and setbacks, and that is the beauty of triathlon. Have a listen!

This episode previews the Lake Placid Ironman venue and course. Lake Placid is one of the most iconic Ironman venues, and is the longest running North American Ironman, besides Kona.  People sign up year after year to do this special race and this year, both Amy and Angela will be lining up to race.  Angela has done this race a few times and has trained up in Placid many more times, so she is well versed on the course.  So, as a newbie to Ironman Lake Placid, Amy takes this opportunity to interview Angela about the course, including the climbs on the bike course and that infamous Keene descent.  Have a listen!

How to Overcome and compete after a major injury with endurance athlete Eric Hinman In His Words:  I Share This Life Story 10 days before Ironman Lake Placid, on a routine training ride, my forearms slipped from my aero-bars and I crashed into a ditch. It hurt like hell! A trip to the emergency room ensued. The verdict, no broken bones, 20 stitches in my chin, a mangled and stitched finger, and epic road rash. After, I was left questioning the nurse. Can I swim tomorrow? Can I run tomorrow? Can I bike tomorrow? Can I race Ironman Lake Placid in 10 days? The answers were all “NO”! Disobediently, I rode the next day with a bag on my hand, to avoid getting the stitches wet. I ran the following day, ziplock bag on hand! I swam for the first time one day before Lake Placid (one day after my stitches were taken out). The pain from the water pressure on my finger was nearly unbearable. Should I race? Can I race? Both were questions I asked myself in the days leading up to toeing the water on Mirror Lake Beach where the 2.4 mile swim would commence. I raced. The adrenaline trumped the pain. I crushed it and qualified for the World Championships in Kona Hawaii. I share this story, because it taught me many life lessons. Don't let hardship interrupt your dreams. Find a way. Conquer what you've set out to do. Anything is possible.
