Running Through Checkpoints - The Reality Of The Palestine Marathon Recording from Ramallah after the Palestine Marathon, Matt sits down with Palestinian runner Ahmad Taher alongside Reem to unpack a race experience that goes far beyond performance. With multiple postponements and uncertainty around travel, the trip was only locked in seven days out, setting the tone for a week defined by unpredictability both on and off the course. He shares how he nearly stepped off the course around 22km before regrouping to finish, reflecting on the mental side of racing in tough conditions. The conversation goes deeper into Ahmad's journey, starting with the first Palestine Marathon in 2013 where he ran with minimal preparation, through to racing internationally in Spain, Barcelona, and Paris. He explains how the marathon itself was founded through the Right to Movement initiative, with a course that passes the Church of the Nativity, the separation wall, refugee camps, and military checkpoints - highlighting the realities of restricted movement in daily life. Ahmad and Reem speak openly about what it's like training in Palestine, including encounters with soldiers, raids, tear gas, and the constant need to check news before heading out to run. Despite this, Ahmad remains committed to improving within Palestine, aiming toward the national marathon record of around 2:29 and targeting future races in Amman and San Sebastian. They also reflect on the emotional moment of fellow runner Mohammed Alasi returning to competition to place second after 32 months in administrative detention, adding further weight to what this race represents beyond sport. Their products use clinically proven ingredients, are tested before and after formulation, and they donate vitamins to needy kids. Maybe more importantly, their products do what they say they're going to do. Listen to this feedback about Joint Health Plus! "My ankle and knee pain was completely gone in a week. Amazing!" - Kim "I thought I was on the verge of having to give up running due to severe hip pain and luckily discovered Previnex - complete game changer for me!" - Anna "I am so grateful for Joint Health Plus! As a certified fitness professional and still an extremely active, competitive amateur athlete, I was getting discouraged with an increase in pain simply kneeling down, or bending down to the floor and getting back up while assisting clients, or in my own training! Once deciding to give this product a try, I was floored when I finally noticed I was not bracing in anticipation of pain when I had to kneel down; not whincing in discomfort upon standing! Thank you, Prevenix!" - Jessica Joint Health Plus is so powerful because the main active ingredient is clinically proven to reduce joint pain, reduce joint stiffness, and improve joint flexibility in just 7-10 days. It's also clinically proven, not just tested, but actually proven in double-blinded, placebo- controlled studies to protect joint cartilage from breaking down during exercise. Thank you Lever! Lever is back as a sponsor and I couldn't be more excited. They make a treadmill attachment that reduces your body weight, letting you run more mileage than you typically could with less injury risk.   They're also trusted by physical therapists, where they're commonly used during injury recovery so you can keep running with less load and impact. They're a "secret weapon" during rehab of many pro runners. Lever attaches to any treadmill and you hook into it like a harness. It effectively makes you lighter, allowing you to do more running with less risk. So maybe you want to build more mileage, or run hard workouts but you're hesitant because of injury concerns. The pro's have been using Lever for years, letting them get the advantage of more training with fewer injuries. I had the chance to go for a run using Lever and it was deceptively easy to set up and use. All of a sudden, I was running 7min mile pace with the heart rate of 8:30 pace. The same intensity that can destroy your life is the same intensity that can rebuild it. The difference isn't the person, it's the direction. Ken Rideout is the world's fastest marathoner over 50, a former prison guard, a former addict, and someone who has never once in his life waited to feel ready before making a move. He spent 10 years taking 50 Percocets a day while making millions on Wall Street and hiding it from everyone around him, including his wife.  Today he runs 10 miles every single day, has won age groups at every world marathon major, and won a 155-mile desert ultra he signed up for with four weeks' notice and zero experience. In this episode, Ken gets into the real story behind what it took to trade his darkest habits for the discipline that made him a world champion. He also shares the one race he quit that rewired how he approaches everything, what he tells his kids about fear, and why having no process is the reason he keeps winning. If you have ever felt like your past, your struggles, or your lack of a plan disqualifies you from doing something extraordinary, this conversation will change how you see yourself. What's Discussed: (00:00) Who Ken Rideout is and why his story doesn't make sense on paper. (04:37) Working as a prison guard at 18 while his brother was an inmate. (07:03) The slap that got him fired and the better job that followed two days later. (15:24) How a routine prescription started a decade-long secret. (19:40) The night his wife found him on the floor. (27:25) Moving his family to LA with no safety net and a newborn. (28:01) Why running became the replacement, not the cure. (33:44) What "delusionally optimistic" actually looks like in practice. (36:05) The most underrated skill in business nobody talks about. (40:30) What Ken told his scared son at the baseball game. (41:01) Signing up for a 155-mile desert race with zero experience. (54:18) The marathon times that made the Wall Street Journal and New York Times take notice. (1:05:35) The one coaching change that shaved five minutes off his marathon. (1:10:22) The line about walking on water that stopped me in my tracks. (1:22:10) The race he quitted that he still carries with him to this day. (1:31:06) His daily routine and the supplements he swears by. (1:44:52) The status symbol that's available to anyone and costs nothing. Thank You to Our Sponsors!AirDoctor: Head to AirDoctorPro.com and use promo code HUSTLE to get up to $300 OFF today! Oz Pearlman is a well-known mentalist-entertainer and a less-well-known marathon and ultramarathon runner. However, his record on the roads and trails is just about as impressive as his mindreading tricks.Pearlman, 43, has run a 2:23 marathon, a 2:25 at Boston, and finished the Western States 100, the Badwater 135, and the Spartathlon in Greece. Recently, he was the planned entertainer at the White House Correspondents dinner in Washington, D.C.--the evening interrupted by gun shots and an apparent assassination attempt.Pearlman was crouched between President Trump and press secretary Karoline Leavitt, attempting to guess the name of her unborn child, when the first shots were heard. A moment later, he was caught in the swarm of Secret Service agents who stormed in to protect Trump, and lead him to safety. In this podcast, Pearlman chillingly describes the scene, including the fear he felt for himself and his wife and friends in attendance. He also talks about his early days in marathon running when he knew virtually nothing about the sport, and what he needed to learn before he became more successful. He's particularly insightful in explaining some of the shared mental strategies between his on-stage performances and in the last miles of a marathon or ultra. For more about Pearlman, check out his website or his Instagram feed.WHERE TO FIND "RUNNING: STATE OF THE SPORT"Use your smartphone to download our podcast from Apple, Spotify, Pandora, or YouTube Podcasts. Marathon Mindset for Women Runners (with Natalie Moore) + Night Run Motivation & Gold Coast Half Training | Women's Running Collective This week on the pod, Hayles and Jussie are deep in their Gold Coast Half Marathon training block and share a full recap of their week from easy runs and sub-threshold sessions to a super fun night at the Nike Pegasus 42 launch at Sydney Motorsport Park. They also take on a late-night run session that was equal parts tough and fun  powered by Taylor Swift, new shoes, and a few mindset tricks to get them through. There's plenty of real-life chaos too (of course), plus a look ahead to a well-earned recovery day and an upcoming 16km run. The girls are then joined by Natalie Moore, nine-time marathoner and mindset coach, for a powerful and honest chat about what it really takes to go from “I'm not a runner” to running multiple marathons. Natalie shares how women can shift their mindset, build belief, and take action even when doubt, fear, or guilt shows up. They dive into finding your “why,” embracing being a beginner, letting go of perfection, and navigating the mental barriers that so many women face when it comes to running and backing themselves. It's a super relatable and motivating episode for anyone wanting to start running, level up, or simply believe in themselves a little more. They then break down the Canadian performances in Boston, including Rory Linkletter's outstanding 2:06:04 PB, Ben Preisner running around 2:11 while managing injury issues, and Jacob Thompson breaking 2:10. Matt and Tom also debate whether fast Boston times should be treated as "true" PBs when conditions, tailwind, and course profile play such a major role. The conversation shifts into post-marathon recovery, including disrupted sleep, nervous system stress, and the importance of getting carbohydrates and protein in quickly after a race. Tom also shares his own recovery approach, including carbs, protein, creatine, and ketones. From there, Tom outlines his preparation for the Ottawa road 10K, where he is aiming to improve his 28:58 PB and push toward sub-28:30. He and Matt discuss high-volume double-threshold training, hill reps, long-run structure, time-based training versus mileage chasing, and why 10K speed can set the ceiling for marathon performance. Later in the episode, they talk about filming YouTube training content, using video as accountability, sponsorship considerations, and wider Boston takeaways including high carbohydrate intakes, half marathon fitness as a predictor, tailwind and air-resistance effects, and the role of supershoes on Boston's downhill sections. Run to Remember Memorial Marathon Podcast

This episode is about more than miles, more than training, and more than race day. It's about Why We Run. The Memorial Marathon honors those who were killed, those who survived, and those changed forever by the Oklahoma City bombing on April 19, 1995. Every year, the Marathon begins with 168 seconds of silence, one second for each individual who was killed. And along the course, runners pass 168 banners, each carrying the name of someone whose story continues to inspire us. Today, we're sharing the personal “why” behind the people who make this event what it is. Their stories remind us that the Memorial Marathon is about far more than running. It's about celebrating life, lifting up a community, and ensuring that we never forget. First, we'll talk with Blayne Arthur, whose mother Dr. Peggy Clark — was killed in the Oklahoma City bombing. Blayne has participated in the Memorial Marathon for several years and her friends and family come together in a big way every race weekend. Then, hear from Nick Chafey, whose mother Rona Linn Kuehner-Chafey was killed in the Oklahoma City bombing. Nick has been a dedicated volunteer and serves as the Memorial Marathon's on-course medical chairman! Next, meet Chris Scheiern, a captain with the OKC Fire department who is getting ready to run the half marathon this year. He was a young boy when the bombing happened, but has been able to work with and learn from several firefighters who responded to the bombing. Then, we'll chat with Mason Hendon, Marathoner and Emergency Medical Technician as he shares what motivates him, and how he finds time to train with his busy schedule. Finally, meet OKC Police Sergeant Chris Teeter who is getting ready to lace up his shoes and run the Memorial Marathon! He is just one of the dozens of OKC police officers who will be participating in the Memorial Marathon.

They also discuss Marty's MTHFR-related folate/B-vitamin issue, tapering philosophy, group training in the heat, preferred YouTube running content, fueling economics, and Boston Marathon predictions. Marty reflects on a difficult three-week stretch after Osaka where fatigue, low motivation, and even easy runs felt unusually hard, before things started to shift again as he returned to roughly 100 km per week and gained confidence from a session of 3K, 5 x 60 seconds, and 3K. The conversation also explores Marty's discovery that an MTHFR gene variant was affecting his ability to absorb folate and certain B vitamins properly, and how getting back on the right supplement made a major difference. Matt and Marty discuss early-morning group runs to manage the heat, training rhythm, pacing options, and realistic goal setting heading toward race day, with 2:40 framed as a stretch and 2:38 sitting more in the realm of possibility if training continues well. They also break down Steve Magness's recent tapering video and share their preference for shorter tapers that maintain intensity, before moving into a broader discussion on running YouTube, filming ideas, watch time, monetization, sponsor dynamics, Ben Felton's content, Jake Barraclough injury speculation, Cole Givens, Nick Bare's move away from data obsession, and the ever-growing cost of fueling - including DIY carb mix ideas versus gels. The episode closes with some Boston Marathon predictions and a bit of shoe talk. Listeners know I'm a relentless advocate of strength training, whether you're doing bodyweight exercises at home or lifting heavy in the gym. But some runners take strength training to a level above and beyond the rest of us - and find great success along the way. Elizabeth Corkum is a fellow running coach and one of my former private coaching clients. Elizabeth - who goes by the nickname Corky - is a 2:58 marathoner and 5-day per week weightlifter. Coach Corky has multiple coaching certifications, including USA Track and Field, Road Runners Club of America, and the Lydiard Foundation. She is also a certified personal trainer and specialist in sports nutrition.  Your path may or may not look exactly like hers, but you can learn a lot from her journey and our discussion, including: How Elizabeth incorporates her extensive strength work into her race training The unexpected path she took to reach her sub 3 hour marathon goal How you can go all in and have fun at the same time The importance of being patient and trusting the path you're on Why every training cycle will help you get somewhere new, even if it's not what you planned Links & Resources from the Show: Learn more about Coach Corky Follow Coach Corky on Instagram Learn how to get strong with Strength Running Listen to a podcast about running a sub 3 marathon Periodize your weightlifting with High Performance Lifting NOTE: This episode was first published in August, 2022. You can see it in action on our YouTube channel. Go to levermovement.com and use code Strength20 (with a capital S) for 20% off any system! Thank You Wahoo Fitness! We're supported by our newest partner - Wahoo Fitness and the best treadmill in the game, the Wahoo KICKR Run. I have been fortunate to run on a KICKR Run treadmill and they're unique - you will immediately know that you're experiencing one of the smoothest, sturdiest treadmills you can buy.  Go to Wahoo Fitness and use code STRENGTHRUNNING to get a free KICKR Headwind Bluetooth Fan ($319.99 value) with your purchase of a Wahoo KICKR Run treadmill.  They like to say that it's the treadmill that follows you, not the other way around. And that's because it's dynamic - there's a lateral tilt feature that mimics real-world terrain. So as you're running, it varies the side-to-side angle by half a degree every few seconds to keep your muscles ready for outdoor running. And the KICKR Run's dynamic pacing is straight out of a sci-fi movie: the treadmill will match your pace automatically: no controls needed. You'll get a more natural running experience with no breaking to reach controls or setting the pace manually.  See what all the pros are raving about with the Wahoo KICKR Run Treadmill. They changed the game for bike trainers in the cycling industry - and now they're doing the same for runners. Don't forget to use code STRENGTHRUNNING to get a free KICKR Headwind Bluetooth Fan!  Thank you LMNT! A big thanks to LMNT for their support of this episode! They make electrolyte drinks for athletes and low-carb folks with no sugar, artificial ingredients, or colors. They are offering a free gift with your purchase at LMNT. And this does NOT have to be your first purchase. You'll get a sample pack with every flavor so you can try them all before deciding what you like best. And DOUBLE big news! Their newest flavor Lemonade Salt is now permanently available (it's now my favorite). They're also offering 12oz cans of sparkling LMNT water that has half the sodium concentration of a packet. Check them out. LMNT's products have some of the highest sodium concentrations that you can find. Anybody who runs a lot knows that sodium, as well as other electrolytes like magnesium and potassium, are essential to our performance and how we feel throughout the day. LMNT is my favorite way to hydrate. I'm now in the habit of giving away boxes of LMNT at group runs around Denver and Boulder and everyone loves this stuff. Boost your performance and your recovery with LMNT. They're the exclusive hydration partner to Team USA Weightlifting and quite a few professional baseball, hockey, and basketball teams are on regular subscriptions. In this episode, I break down why that belief is holding you back, what speed endurance actually is, and how short races can make you stronger late in the marathon without blowing up your plan. Allison Yamamoto: A Marathoner's RED-s Recovery Story

Strides Forward

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 24, 2026 45:40

To be clear, Allison's story is not about weight loss or chasing thinness, perse, but more so about being a regimented, disciplined athlete who wanted to see what she was capable of as a runner—and who wanted to leverage her nutrition to support that pursuit.   In addition, Allison was coming into running as a young adult in this time of thriving influencer culture, so this is also a story about negotiating popular narratives around nutrition and athletic performance. Narratives that often fail to clarify who they truly benefit, if anyone, and the fact that what they're proposing can actually be harmful for some populations, like women endurance athletes.  And then, there are just the garden variety persistent narratives like thinner is better: it isn't. And, that menstrual cycle disruptions are normal: they are not.  Not getting a regular period is a big red flag that something is seriously wrong. And yes, it's very common with women athletes, but that doesn't mean it's normal. That sort of thinking—that losing one's period is a normal part of being a woman athlete—just emphasizes how much we've normalized under-fueling for women athletes. And, we know very well now, and have for a long, long time, that under-fueling has both short-term and long-term consequences. Left unattended, under-fueling can have serious and lasting, sometimes permanent health issues, like poor bone health and fertility issues, including infertility.  And in the short-term, under-fueling impacts training, recovery, and mood. You'll hear Allison talk about these issues in her story. As she learned, you cannot fire on all cylinders when you aren't eating enough, often enough.  Through her time experiencing and then recovering from reds, Allison learned a lot. But it wasn't easy; it never is. The whole journey had such an impact on her that she's now focused her career on coaching and sports nutrition. Her aim is to help provide the comprehensive support she didn't have during her recovery from reds. She has also come to a place in her running journey that is both, as she says, flexible and sustainable.  Allison's story is both cautionary and inspirational. Mentioned in this Episode Allison Yamamoto Instagram: @allisonyamamoto WRS Substack newsletter: womensrunningstories.substack.com To support WRS, please rate and review the show iTunes/Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/womens-running-stories/id1495427631 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4F8Hr2RysbV4fdwNhiMAXc?si=1c5e18155b4b44fa Music Credits Cormac O'Regan, of Playtoh Coma-Media, via Pixabay PaulYudin, via Pixabay Rockot, via Pixabay chillmore, via Pixabay Ways to Connect and Engage with Women's Running Stories WRS Instagram: @womensrunningstories Facebook: facebook.com/WomensRunningStories Website: womensrunningstories.com

Today's episode is a special one. I got to sit down in person with Tristin Colley, formerly known as Tristin Van Ord, for a conversation that felt personal, honest, and really meaningful. Tristin is a professional marathoner, a two-time Olympic Trials Marathon qualifier, and currently pregnant with her first child, a baby girl due this April. She made her marathon debut in 2019 running 2:40 and has steadily worked her way down to a 2:25 personal best, a testament to her patience, belief, and long-term commitment to the sport. In this episode, Tristin and I talk about the many transitions she is navigating right now. From stepping away from the ZAP Endurance program following its recent closure, to moving with her husband Andrew to Raleigh, to entering motherhood while still holding big goals as a professional runner. She shares what this waiting season has looked like, emotionally and practically, as she explores sponsorship opportunities and imagines her return to racing post-baby. We also talk about the USATF Foundation Maternity Grant, which Tristin was awarded, and what it means to feel supported during pregnancy while continuing to identify as a professional athlete with unfinished business. One of the most fun parts of this episode is that Tristin received surprise messages of encouragement from Sara Vaughn, Kara Goucher, and Stephanie Bruce. These moments add so much heart to the conversation and reflect the deep support within the women's running community. I'm cheering so hard for Tristin, and truly believe that any brand would be lucky to have her on their team. A recent 59:23 half-marathon for American long-distance star Alex Maier wasn't a case of him catching lightning in a bottle. It was the culmination of years of quiet dominance: from Oklahoma State to national titles, American records, and a seamless transition to the roads. And with his stellar race in Houston, he's now the second-fastest U.S. man of all time at the half-marathon distance. But this isn't a random one-off occurrence. In 2025, he won the Düsseldorf Marathon in April with a time of 2:08:33; it was a top-15 all-time mark for a U.S. runner. He also claimed his first national title in March in Atlanta, running 1:00:48 to secure a spot on Team USA; and then set a 10-mile American record of 45:15 at the Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in April. He was a former standout at Oklahoma State, where he earned multiple First-Team All-America honors, including a 5th-place finish at the 2022 NCAA Cross Country Championships. He also placed in the top 10 at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the 3,000m and 5,000m in 2023.He's gone from NCAA standout to national champion; from American records at 10 miles on the road to becoming the second-fastest U.S. half marathoner ever. His trajectory is impossible to ignore. It all feels like he's just getting started.Tap into the Alex Maier Special. If you enjoy the podcast, please consider following us on Spotify and Apple Podcasts and giving us a five-star review! I would also appreciate it if you share it with your friend who you think will benefit from it. Comment the word “PODCAST” below and I'll DM you a link to listen. If this episode blesses you, please share it with a friend!S H O W  N O T E S-The Run Down By The Running Effect (our new newsletter!): https://tinyurl.com/mr36s9rs-Our Website: https://therunningeffect.run -THE PODCAST ON YOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClLcLIDAqmJBTHeyWJx_wFQ-My Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/therunningeffect/?hl=en-Take our podcast survey: https://tinyurl.com/3ua62ffz

I cannot tell you how special this episode feels to me. Laura Galeazzo — who longtime listeners will remember as the very first guest I ever interviewed back in 2016 — is back on the show, and catching up with her brought everything full circle. When I launched this podcast, I was a young mom with two little kids, newly pregnant with my third, dreaming about building something of my own. Laura said yes to being my very first interview when all I had was a microphone, a simple idea, and a whole lot of belief. Since then, she's lived so much life: she's had two babies, become a real estate agent, coached athletes, and continued to chase big goals with the same quiet determination that made her story so compelling in the first place. She's now a 2:49 marathoner and recently ran a huge half marathon PR, breaking through years of self-doubt to rediscover her confidence. I've watched her navigate seasons of grit, seasons without PRs, and seasons where she just kept showing up for herself — and seeing her run her strongest races yet is incredibly inspiring. It feels so right to have her back on the show all these years later, still getting after it and still reminding us what's possible when you keep going. "It's seeing the bridge from a distance and saying, ‘There are going to be 55,000 people that are going to traverse over that bridge from 150 countries from all over the world, and from every neighborhood in New York City.' And they've put in months of hard work. We have thousands of people that have raised millions of dollars for charity. There are people that are running for various causes that are inspiring their families, their friends, their neighborhoods, their communities. And most of all, they're inspiring the world. They're inspiring complete strangers as they run by them. And I think about that when I look at that bridge." —Ted Metellus, TCS New York City Marathon Race Director Every year on the first Sunday of November, more than 55,000 runners will take over the five boroughs for one reason: the TCS New York City Marathon. This episode is your unofficial guide to the iconic 26.2-mile race. Two jam-packed hours of New York City Marathon-related information. And this episode isn't just for the marathoners: We have tips for spectators, a breakdown of how to get into the race in the future, and general advice for having your best marathon day. As for my New York City Marathon love affair: This race is my Super Bowl, my Christmas, my birthday, Valentine's Day, my favorite day of the year. It was the first marathon I ever watched, back in 2008, when I went out to cheer for a coworker who was running the race. (Thanks for the inspiration, Therese!) I've run it three times — in 2013, 2014, and 2016 — and volunteered once, in 2015, at a fluid station in Brooklyn. In 2017, I cheered on “First and Fifth,” and in 2018, at three weeks postpartum, going to the New York City Marathon was my first outing since having a baby. I sat in the grandstands as Shalane Flanagan finished third, and pumped in a “fancy” (you know, the nice kind!) finish line porta potty. Then, in 2019, I got the best seat in the house for the first time: New York City Marathon finish line announcer. After announcing at the finish and at the Finish Line After Dark in 2019, 2021, and 2022, in 2023 I made my NYC TV debut. I joined the broadcast talent team as a reporter on the international feed, and was featured on the WABC7 local broadcast. Last year, I was on the ESPN and WABC7 broadcasts at the finish line, interviewing notables including Chelsea Clinton, Casey Neistat, Conner Mantz, Clayton Young, Sara Vaughn, Matt James, and Ilona Maher. This year: They're putting me on ESPN and ABC again! In addition to hosting a live show with Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone during New York City Marathon weekend, on race day I'll be part of the ESPN2 and WABC7 broadcasts as a start and finish line reporter from 8 AM until 5 PM. But the Molly who will be lining up in Staten Island this year is very different from the fresh-off-earning-an-Olympic-bronze-medal Molly who ran it in 2021. (Her 2:24:42 is still the fastest time run by an American woman in NYC.) In this conversation, Molly talks about the highs from the past few years, including that fourth-place finish in New York City in 2021 and an eighth-place finish and personal best (2:23:07) at the Chicago Marathon in 2023. She also talks about the lows, including what was going on behind the scenes during those races, injuries, mental health struggles, and sponsorship changes. She offers updates on her new coach, her new home base, her new relationship, and her new relationship with running, and talks all about her training, mindset, and goals for race day in New York City.
