During the 1980s, half the patients on some of London's AIDS wards were Irish. It is a staggering fact—and part of an almost-forgotten chapter of queer history. Homosexuality remained illegal in Ireland until 1993. Many queer Irish people crossed the Irish Sea in search of freedom, safety and the chance to live authentically. They created homes, friendships and chosen families in Britain. But as AIDS devastated the community, many also found themselves on London's wards, far from home. At the centre of this episode is Fr Bernárd Lynch, the openly gay Irish Catholic priest who founded New York City's first AIDS ministry in 1982. He cared for people as they died, challenged the Church over safer sex and gay rights, and later continued that work in London, including at the London Lighthouse. Bernárd's testimony—alongside the experiences of others who lived through the crisis—is at the heart of Mammy's House, a new black comedy now running at Upstairs at the Gatehouse in Highgate until 13 September. Graeme speaks to Bernárd and the play's co-creator and star Derek Murphy, whose screen credits include RTÉ's We Watch, You Watch and hit sitcom Killinaskully. Derek explains why he was determined to bring this uniquely Irish story to life, combining humour and humanity while doing justice to people whose experiences were in danger of disappearing. Bernárd has now seen Mammy's House twice. He considers it one of the most profound and authentic depictions of the era he has encountered—and believes it gives this extraordinary community the recognition and dignity it deserves.

This week the team is joined by Irish actor, producer and presenter Derek Murphy, the creative force behind Mammy's House — a new play coming to Upstairs at the Gatehouse in Highgate from 1st to 13th September. Set in Camden in 1985, it follows a group of Irish friends who build a chosen family together in London after leaving Ireland in search of acceptance, only to be confronted by the AIDS crisis. Derek explains how the play grew out of a talk by Irish historian and LGBT activist Dr Joseph Healy, two years of research and interviews with people who lived through the era — and why the stories of London's Irish LGBTQ+ community during the crisis have been so rarely told.Also in the studio, Sangeeta Dewan shares the story behind her book Hope Beyond Grief. After losing her husband Mahesh to a brain tumour, Sangeeta began a journey through heartbreak, grief and healing that she hopes can guide others through their own. She reads a beautiful poem from the book and talks about the techniques that carried her through — journaling, breathing, grounding — and why she believes pain can be a transformational teacher: "You have to feel it, to heal it."

Although the worldwide Netflix phenomenon Stranger Things was released in 2016, the Internet is finally catching up a decade later in realizing that the show is both loosely and firmly based on both real historical programs and popular conspiracy theories. But Stranger Things is more than that; it incorporates cultural nostalgia, even of the negative kind, like the Satanic Panic, and puts historical Easter eggs in every season. From Project Rainbow to Astral Projection, and from MK Ultra to child abuse and Project Montauk, many of the themes present in the show are also anything but unique. They pull from myth, legend, and folklore, and in some ways touch on ritual magic and the dark arts. The synchronicities of the show are as powerful today as the archetypal characters of Star Wars were to the 1970s. In the upside down of all this, however, is a world of real science, including real DOE National Laboratories like the Idaho National Lab alongside the labs involved in the Manhattan Project. BEST OF: A recent article form the New York Time compared AI to the shoggoth of H.P. Lovecraft - monstrous beings of black protoplasm, bred as slaves that eventually develop brains of their own. An article from 2017 in MIT Technology Review compared AI to the black cube of Saturn. AI is also really good at doing one specific thing and that is creating Lovecraftian monsters. In the Watchmen comicbook series, Adrian Veidt, also known as Ozymandias, attempts to unite the US and USSR against a common enemy to avoid nuclear war. As opposed to the movie version wherein Doctor Manhattan is scapegoated, in the comic Adriam Veldt used advanced genetic engineering technology to create a giant monster from outer space. The monster is a squid, and as the plan proceeds he teleports the monster through a gateway into New York City. A 2022 promotion for the show Stranger Things lit up the Empire State building, along with others around the world, with a portal to the Upside Down. The recent wildfires from Canada that dumped smoke and particulate on New York City create a background similar to the tv show promotion. In fact, the ad this time was for the game Diablo IV. It feature the Queen of Succubi, Lilith, with a caption and date that read “Welcome to Hell, New York” - 6/6/23. New York is also home to a Ruth Bader Ginsburg statue featuring Lilith's horns and tentacle arms. Lilith is the mother of all demons, the tempter of men, and aborter of children. It is therefore appropriate that NYC's One World Trade building was lit up pink to celebrate abortion rights in 2019. Lilith also wears a rainbow necklace, an outward projection of her disdain for God's promise to never flood the earth and kill innocence. In reliefs, Lilith is shown with the legs of a serpent, with two guardian owls that guard her dominion. She haunts in dreams and from the Upside Down. It is from this realm that Gordie Rose, founder of D-Wave, said that quantum computing will summon what he compared to the visions of H.P. Lovecraft: “And these things we're summoning into the world now, are not demons, they're not evil, they're more like the Lovecraftian great ‘old ones'. These entities are not necessarily going to be aligned with what we want.” The 1920 a movie ALGOL, about an alien giving advanced technology to humans, essentially became the base for modern algorithms starting with ALGOL 60 and 58. Technology that led to the atomic bomb also acts as a sort of trigger to open the gateway and summon the Old Ones.
