Ontario is a province rich in legendary breweries that paved the way for the incredible liquid that blesses our glasses today, so it was an honour and a privilege to speak with the man behind Nickel Brook Brewing. Co-Founder John Romano joined Cee and Nate to talk about their humble beginnings as a home brew and wine store (Best Bitters), their work ethic in the early years, the fascinating story behind their cucumber gose, how their Italian heritage influences the brewery, the challenges being an Ontario-based brewery as far as taxes and purchase points, and how their Green Apple Pilsner and Gluten Free beers saved the company. They got into their Naughty Neighbour American Pale Ale, Creeper Reaper NEIPA, Uncle Goose West Coast IPA, Head Stock West Coast IPA, Maple Porter and Root Beer. This was brilliant - cheers! The third drop from Link Up's Series 2 keeps us in Ontario with an OG brewery - Nickel Brook. Marketing guru Liam Moat and Head Brewer Gordo Jones (fresh from Vancouver) joined Tiff and Cee to crack open their Link Up offering, a 6.1% IPA with Citra, Galaxy, Nelson Sauvin and Magnum hops. They chatted about the various diversity and equality initiatives they've participated in, why it's important the taproom looks like the outside world, and how programs like Link Up and Black Is Beautiful create valuable conversations. Cheers! About the Link Up season: We're back with a brand new season of BAOS Podcast, and this one is something very special and very close to us. We'll be focusing this entire season on Link Up, a non-profit started by the good folks behind Microbrasserie 5e Baron in Aylmer, QC and Tiffany and Cee here at BAOS and High Season Co. Our aim with this program is to help BIPOC from underrepresented communities learn about and enter the craft beer industry in essentially any area they wish - from a brewing apprentice to taking the Cicerone course for front-of-house opportunities, from hop farming to the yeast lab, from beer media to design and photography, we're here to help diversify an industry that is in dire need of it. For our final episode of 2021, we're taking it back full circle. Fellow Australian expat Christina Owczarek started her brewery, XhAle Brew Co., mid-pandemic in 2020 and has gone from strength to strength this year, so much so that we had to get her back on to wrap up this 365. Christina updated us on everything that's gone down, from a slew of new beers to winning an Alberta Beverage Award for her Belgian-style Saison, from speaking up to out abusers in the wider food and beverage industry to her deep community work, this was a genuine, open, honest and raw conversation. Cee crushed XhAle's See Ya Next Tuesday Australian Cölsch, Mates For Life British Golden Ale with Coffee, and They Weren't Raging Against White Goods Belgian Saison, while Christina cracked open Nickel Brook x BAOS Podcast's Green Apple Lager collab and L'Espace Public x BAOS Podcast's Bière De Vacances (Bleuet Goyave) collab. Happy Holidays, see y'all next year! BAOS Podcast Subscribe to the podcast on YouTube | Website | Theme tune: Cee - BrewHeads
It's the Christmas extravaganza and Chris is sipping a really delightful imperial stout from Nickel Brook. God bless us, everyone!
It feels like every other week there's another brewery in trouble for doing something pretty damn horrible, often leading to being "cancelled" by the craft beer scene at large. But is there, or should there be, a path to redemption for these breweries if they learn from the experience and actually change for the better? Our producer Tiffany joins Cee for a spirited and honest discussion about this somewhat controversial topic, alongside touching on their recent collaboration beer with Nickel Brook, an update on Link Up, and their campaign supporting Muskoka Brewery's move into Quebec. They crushed the Nickel Brook x BAOS Podcast Green Apple Lager and the 5e Baron x Link Up Cascadian Dark Ale. How do you guys feel about cancelled breweries and redemption? Let us know on social! Making a glorious return to Chris' good graces, it's Naughty Neighbour American-style Pale Ale. Also the usual rugby jibber-jabber, and an exhortation to participate in coaching young people in whatever you're good at, because it's good for them, and good for your soul.
The Adjunct Series is back! After a summer 2021 hiatus (well, sorta, we did drop the entire Link Up season), our do-whatever-we-want series has returned. Cee and our Co-Founder, Producer and perennial fave Tiffany Alexis hung out to catch everyone up about what went down this summer. They broke down the Link Up project in detail while crushing both the Town and BreWskey Link Up beers, they lightened things up with a segment reading some hilarious Untappd reviews thanks to UntappdWTF, they talked about their recent and upcoming beer collaborations with OverHop, L'Espace Public and Nickel Brook, chatted about events being back and what they're excited about for fall and Oktoberfest beers. Great to be back, y'all, cheers! BAOS Podcast Subscribe to the podcast on YouTube | Website | Theme tune: Cee - BrewHeads

Tonight, Chris is sipping a delightful hazy IPA (albeit a low abv one) from Nickel Brook, and talking a little rugby, Black History Month, and generally having a time.
Back in 2011 when Cee first started his 365 Days of Beer thing (long before the podcast), he took an Ontario beer trip with former co-host Scott, and the first brewery they went to was Nickel Brook. They happened to meet co-founder John Romano, who gave the guys their first-ever private brewery tour, something that they always appreciated. Fast forward to 2020 and Nickel Brook have updated their branding, they have an incredible barrel program, and they've pumping out fantastic beers seemingly every week. For some reason, this is the first time we've had NB on the podcast, but we finally got it done. Cee hung out with head brewer Ben and marketing guru Liam to get the full NB story, how they've grown over the years, and touched on their rebrand while drinking their new Winter Wizard IPA, barrel-aged sour Uncertainty Principle 7, and the 2020 Kentucky Bastard bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout. Cheers! BAOS Podcast Subscribe to the podcast on YouTube | Website | Theme tune: Cee - BrewHeads
For all our long-time BAOS YouTube viewers, you may have seen one of our half a dozen or so blind craft beer taste test challenges that we've done over the years. Now that Dahn (Tiff's cousin from England) is around, we've been schooling him on craft beer and we figured it'd be fun to put his new knowledge to the test in his first ever blind craft beer taste challenge. Tiff, as always, tricked us good and proper, dropping a Pale Ale from Trailway, an NEIPA from 5e Baron and a sour from Nickel Brook on us. Want to know how Dahn fared? Listen to this slightly shorter episode, and check out the full video on YouTube to watch for the reactions. Cheers! It's summer, it's hot af and our portable air conditioner only does so much, so for this episode, Tiffany and Cee hung out on their balcony - also known as their courtyard in the sky. We took a break from guests this week and had a chat while finishing off the beers from the latest Nickel Brook event Wobbly Pops that went down right before the podcast kicked off. Our Social Media agency, High Season Co., recently released a video breaking down how businesses can continue to operate while supporting social justice and the #BlackLivesMatter movement. We took those steps and then applied them directly to breweries, talking at length about how the beer business can move forward while being cognizant of supporting the very communities that keep them in business. Enjoy! BAOS Podcast Subscribe to the podcast on YouTube | Website | Theme tune: Cee - BrewHeads
Moving forward with the guests, this week we hung out with a good friend of the podcast, Noah Forrest, arguably the most sought after beer blogger in Quebec. Tiff and Cee had attended A Night With Nickel Brook prior to the podcast, walking through their flagship lineup with Head Brewer Ben, so they decided to make it an NB night. Luckily, Noah also had a bottle of Nickel Brook's delectable Cafe del Bastardo on hand, so while Cee and Tiff finished off the NB cans, Noah crushed a table beer from La Ferme in Quebec. Over the luxurious imperial coffee stout, the gang chatted about the definition of a "yawn beer", PR packs, and whether Quebec's beer game has eclipsed Ontario.
