“Our American Israel is masterful and deserves a larger audience.” —Ta-Nehisi CoatesLive from Prime Produce (@PrimeProduce), Shoshana Brown (@shotimelive) moderates a discussion about Amy Kaplan's (z"l) book Our American Israel: The Story of an Entangled Alliance with panelists:Social Activist and Professor Andrew Ross (andrewtross.com)IfNotNow (@ifnotnoworg) co-founder Simone Zimmerman (@simonerzim)Journalist and Professor Moustafa Bayoumi (@mousbay, moustafabayoumi.com)"In 1945, it was not inevitable that a global superpower emerging victorious from World War II would come to identify with a small state for Jewish refugees, refugees who at that time were still being turned away from the United States. How, then, did so many in America come to feel that the bond between it and Israel was historically inevitable, morally right, and a matter of common sense. Our American Israel reveals how Israel's identity has long been entangled with America's belief in its own exceptional nature. Beginning at the end of World War II with debates about the establishment of a Jewish state in Palestine and continuing through both the rise of evangelical Christian Zionism and the war on terror, Amy Kaplan challenges the associations underlying this special alliance." - Harvard University PressShow SocialsX @BeyondThePaleFM IG @BeyondThePaleFMFB @BeyondThePaleFMHosts@RafaelShimunov on Twitter@rafaelshimunov.bsky.social on BlueSky@ShoB on Twitter@Rafternoon on IG@shob18 on IGSupport the ShowBecome a BAI Buddy of Beyond The Pale at wbai.allyrafundraising.comLeave us a voicemail, we'll play it on airRecord a question or statement to play on air at (917) 740-8971 or via the Spotify app.You can also listen to our show live, every Friday after @DemocracyNow at 9AM on WBAI 99.5 FM NY.Thank you to our radio engineer, Michael G Haskins, and our researcher Margo Flug.
Using new archival sources and information from some of the relatives of these forgotten activists, in her new book Rebel Women, Margaret Ward gives us a compelling account of the courageous contributions of over fifty women who were members of Cumann na mBan, or who were attached to the IRA between 1914 and 1924 in County Antrim. The book focuses on members of the Belfast branches and of branches in the isolated communities of the Glens of Antrim. Throughout this period of conflict and partition, women played an essential role in the republican movement. Not only did they organise arms dumps, shelter men on the run, hide money and documents, provide weaponry for operations, care for the wounded and organise effective communication systems, they also paid the price in terms of raids and imprisonment.Welcome to Episode 43 of the Historical Belfast Podcast where it is 5 years (almost to the day) since Episode 1, way back in April 2020. In this new Episode I am joined by Dr Margaret Ward to discuss matters arising from her new book. I was really delighted to get Margaret onto the podcast and I began by asking her to give me a sense of Cumann na mBan particularly in Belfast and what set them apart from the rest of the island.Rebel Women available from Beyond The Pale at the following link: Rebel Women: Cumann na mBan in Belfast and the Glens of Antrim — beyond the pale books – books on Irish society and politicsSend us a textSupport the show
Noam Shuster Eliassi is an activist-comedian who writes and performs in Arabic, English and Hebrew (with a touch of Farsi — her mom Iranian born, her dad a Jew in Palestine whose parents fled the Holocaust from Romania), frequently touching upon her experience growing up in “Oasis of Peace” (Neve Shalom/Wahat al-Salam), a mixed community where Palestinians and Jews live together by choice. Her satirical videos have gone viral throughout the Arab world. In 2019, Noam became the first Jewish performer to play the Palestine Comedy Festival. Noam's one-woman show “Coexistence, My Ass!” was developed at Harvard and received a four-star review at the 2023 Edinburgh Fringe Festival and was just honored at Sundance as the Winner of the World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award for Freedom of Expression.Shoshana (@shob) and Rafael (@rafternoon) also talk about the news, including the Jews for Racial and Economic Justice (@jfrejnyc) seder featuring their endorsed Mayoral candidates Zohran Mandani (@zohrankmamdani) and Brad Lander (@brad.lander) with intro by JFREJ staffer Leo Ferguson (@fergusonleo). Patrick Healy's novel Beyond the Pale explores memory, time, childhood, and how language shapes our world. Set in rural Ireland, starting in the 1950s, the book follows a young boy's early memories through a series of expressionistic soundscapes. The expression from which the book takes its name has come to mean beyond what is considered acceptable behavior, but the origins of the phrase referred to land within Ireland that was “beyond the control of the English government.” Healy's book examines social class, stigma, village, family life, identity, and the nature of consciousness. Rooted in the oral tradition, the book is a celebration of place, the Irish idiom, music, and memory.Patrick Healy was born in Dublin in 1955. He studied philosophy and Semitic languages at St. Columbans Dalgan Park, Pontifical University Maynooth, and University College Dublin. He has published over 20 books on topics around artists, aesthetic theory, philosophy of science, architecture, art criticism and innumerable essays. He has been a Professor of Interdisciplinary Research at Free International University Amsterdam, 1997-present, and was a Senior Research Fellow at the Faculty of Architecture from 2020-2022. He is currently completing a new work of fiction entitled Fatal Fragments, a loose follow-up to his novel Beyond the Pale.“You have all the different languages interplaying with each other. Little scraps of Irish languages and idioms have stories that have been told, but how Ireland actually comes about as an idea, as to where the Irish come from. A lot of these kinds of debates are just placed, you know, in day-to-day conversation, and then they trail off. People start something; they trail off and might come back to it later. That phenomenon of speaking over each other, tales that are known and not known, I always found very interesting. It was literally like a radio that was kept on all day in the kitchen. You would come in and out, and you would hear certain things, and you'd have to work out the context and the conversation and the speakers. In some way, one of the big personalities in the book is just a radio that's playing, and some of these conversations are not actually taking place between characters in real-time. They're just snippets that have been overheard on radios.”Episode Websitewww.creativeprocess.info/podInstagram:@creativeprocesspodcastPhoto credit: Marc Damri

In today's episode, I want to talk about going ‘beyond the pale', because this particular phrase really stuck out to me, and I believe it's something you will resonate with as well. If you look up what this actually means (which I of course did), you'll find that it means to act in a way that is considered outside the bounds of ‘acceptable' behaviors or standards. It may be seen as outrageous, offensive, unacceptable, and even shocking.I know SO many of you are currently navigating a journey of doing something different. You're going against the grain, and you may be getting pushback from those around you because yeah…it's shocking, and they don't want to accept it.So often, we betray ourselves in our lives; we completely self-abandon what we *really* want to do for the sake of someone else's comfort. It feels ‘easier' and ‘safer' when we stay with what we've always known, and continue to get approval from the world around us. But...that's never going to allow you the joy, happiness, alignment, authenticity, and true freedom that you want in your life, is it? I invite you to consider what going ‘beyond the pale' looks like for you. What are you going to choose? What is *really* inviting you to step further outside of where you are now?In this episode, I cover:The history behind going ‘beyond the pale'What stepping outside of ‘the pale' can look and feel likeWhy we betray ourselves in multiple areas of our livesThe little ‘gems' and ‘nuggets' we find and collect for ourselves when we actually go ‘beyond the pale'Be sure to hit subscribe so you never miss the latest episode!Connect with Emily:Follow on Instagram and FacebookJoin my email listCheck out my websiteConnect with me on LinkedInResources and Links:Gather in Growth Sponsorship InquiryBook me as a speaker for your next eventGather in Growth podcast produced by: Jill Carr PodcastingMentioned in this episode:Join us in Yellowstone!Yellowstone Retreat

Beyond The Pale is live from São Paulo Brazil with Shoshana Brown and guests: Audrey Sasson, Em Hilton, Eva Borgwardt and Brandon Schorsch. Em Hilton is a Jewish organiser and writer based in London. She is the International Policy Director of Diaspora Alliance and a co-founder of Na'amod: UK Jews Against Israeli Occupation and Apartheid. Eva Borgwardt is a Jewish organizer based in Brooklyn. She is the National Spokesperson for IfNotNow, a movement of American Jews organizing to end U.S. support for Israel's system of apartheid and demand equality, justice, and a thriving future for all Palestinians and Israelis. Audrey Sasson is the Executive Director of Jews for Racial & Economic Justice (JFREJ), and the organization's first Mizrahi leader to serve in the position. She has nearly 30 years experience building the organized left, as a community organizer, social worker, and campaign director, on issues ranging from immigrant worker struggles and tenant rights to sustainable economies and racial justice. Brandon Schorsch joined Jewish Community Action in January 2020 after several years working in progressive issue advocacy and electoral politics in the Twin Cities. Having seen a childhood friend become radicalized online in the early 2010s, Brandon had been personally researching hate/extremism for many years before working on JCA's Combating Antisemitism and White Nationalism campaign. Over the last three years, he has developed/co-developed numerous trainings examining contemporary antisemitism's origins, mechanisms, motivations, and intersections with other forms of marginalization and oppression. Through JCA's programming, he has trained several thousand people and brought crucial analysis to dozens of community organizations, government offices, and religious congregations. Lost Pages was founded in 2012 by Paolo Greco, who decided that academia was frustrating as hell. Barely employed, from of a desk make of loudspeakers and a cabinet door they developed 'Adventure Fantasy Game', and then went off to release a series of spellbooks, including some bound by hand by Paolo, who dabbles in bookbinding and printmaking. This helped grow a strong and idiosincratic aesthetic, made in equal measures of 17th century pamphlets, medieval grimoires, and 20th century technical handbooks, often at the same time both game material and in-world artefact and prop. Publishing Lost Pages soon after became a publisher, and released other games such as Chris McDowell's 'Into the Odd', Brendan Strejcek's 'Wonder & Wickedness', and Eric Nieudan's 'Macchiato Monsters', who all went to gained recognition and success, inspiring a slew of other games and creations such as Beyond The Pale, Book Of Gaub, and Wulfwald. Can Uncommitted Democrat delegates save Palestinian lives and US elections? We speak with June Rose, the Chief of Staff for the Providence City Council and Rhode Island's ‘uncommitted' delegate who's just returning from their #NotAnotherBomb and #LetPalestineSpeak actions at the Democratic National Convention. June Rose has a long history helping flip races to favor Democrats and joins us to talk about their role in the Uncommitted Movement as a former Orthodox Jew, who studied in Israel and took action into their own hands at religious school to make sure they meet Palestinians. They speak about how that changed their life, how they began in this movement, and what's next for getting Kamala Harris, Joe Biden and the Democrats to finally act on Gaza. Rose is also one of only two trans people in the country to have managed a statewide political campaign and is the highest ranking transgender staffer in Rhode Island history. We also talk about the return to campuses, and how universities like NYU have snuck in new regulations conflating Judaism with Zionism, and declaring people who hold Zionist ideology as a "protected class" along historically marginalized people, as well as hostile architecture instituted across schools to prevent college students from practicing free speech about Gaza and Palestinians. Beyond The Plate 2024 Theme- Culture, Customs and Craic Bahay Midsummer Feast For the first time, Beyond The Pale will have a sit-down bookable restaurant brought to you by the award-winning food popup Bahay by Alex O'Neill and Richie Castillo. Book ahead for Bahay Midsummer Feast: Tickets will be live on Wednesday, May 15th at 10 am from https://www.itsbeyondthepale. ie/ Price: €50 menu per person including booking fees The focus at Beyond The Plate is always to present food and drink in fun, tasty ways suited to a festival like Beyond The Pale and this year is no different. Forget 'fussy' cooking demos of the past, Beyond The Plate is all about embracing the craic while celebrating all that we love about Irish food and drink. There will be daily Beyond the Fence foraging walks on the grounds with Samuel Arnold Keane and entertainment across the weekend with three food-based plays: Splitting the G: A Controversy by Shamim de Brún, Ham & Cheese by JP McMahon and family friendly BAKE by Paul Curley. Live podcast recordings include Flop Culture with Fionnuala Jones and drinks podcast The Centre Cut. In an attempt to take the online food world offline, Beyond The Plate will welcome some of our favourite online creators, writers and broadcasters who love food and drink to the stage over the weekend including Cassie Stokes, Shamim de Brún, Sian Conway, Louise McSharry, Alex O'Neill, Irah Mari, Dee Laffan, Vritti Bansal and illustrator extraordinaire Hephee. As always some of the best chefs, cooks and food thinkers will be joining for chats and tastings including Aishling Moore from Goldie, food conservationist Max Jones of Up There The Last, Graham Herterich aka The Cupcake Bloke, vegan chef Holly White, chef and author of Funky, Caitlin Ruth, Alistair Jeje of Socafro Kitchen, Kevin O'Donnell from Le Doyenne in Paris. As well as Housewives & Hors d'Oeuvres: A Culinary Journey through the Real Housewives with Louise McSharry and guests. Speaking of Beyond The Plate Ali Dunworth says: "Irish food doesn't often get the pedestal it deserves, especially when it comes to culture. But there is history and culture in every knob of butter, cake of bread, head of cabbage, boiled ham, every bag of crisps and pint of stout. Irish food culture has been woven through our folklore, our customs, and our traditions and these days it lives on in our livelihoods, our festivals, and our screens. It's featured in poetry, songs and literature." "Everything having to do with food - its capture, cultivation, preparation, and consumption - all represents a cultural act. Over the weekend at Beyond the Plate we will celebrate Irish food old and new. We will celebrate the culture, customs and craic around Irish food and drink. We will discuss, debate, and taste Irish food and drink, both traditional and modern through as many varied lenses as we can, through talks, tastings, debates, plays, poetry, drinks and eating of course," says B...

10 years ago, Palestinian Professor Refaat Alareer (z''l) appeared on the original version of Beyond The Pale with his student, Yousef Aljamal, while on US tour with their book, Gaza Writes Back. Shoshana Brown and Rafael Shimunov replay segments of that episode from the the Beyond The Pale archives, housed at The Tamiment Library and Robert F. Wagner Labor Archives at NYU. Rafael describes his relationship with Refaat, why it was so hard to edit these clips. Shoshana speaks on collective liberation, and healing after Refaat's and his family's murder by Israeli forces. And Yousef, now a scholar himself, opens archives with a tribute to Refaat. We hear the voices of past show hosts, including Alex Kane, Esther Kaplan and Marilyn Kleinberg Neimark--and its original intro. We open the show with Brian Cox's reading of Refaat's final poem, "If I Must Die" and cover his impact around the world and across the campus protests by students across the United States and world. And we closed the show with a reading from the book itself, Gaza Writes Back: Short Stories from Young Writers in Gaza, Palestine. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/beyondthepale/message

The Russian Czarist government restricted Russian Jewry to the western provinces of the empire through a series of legislative acts, which came to be known as the Pale of Settlement. Starting in the 1850's, provisions were enacted which enabled certain types of Jews to reside outside the Pale. Wealthy merchants, those with academic degrees, certain kinds of military veterans and craftsman, were gradually permitted to reside anywhere they desired across the Russian Empire. This process is now referred to as selective integration, and it proceeded quite slowly, and was often accompanied by other restrictions. This integration process didn't lead to the desired emancipation, and was further limited by a reactionary policy pursued by the Czar following the pogroms of 1881-82. The Jewish community of St Petersburg emerged as the self-appointed leadership of Russian Jewry, and interceded on behalf of the Jews within the Pale with limited success. Mama B. is back from her family's holiday break trip to Ireland. As she shares some of her more interesting travel adventures in Ireland. . . she feels listeners may be surprised at the U.S. and Ireland's intertwined history. She learned there are lessons from Irish history for the U.S. to heed as it gets ready to vote in what will be the most definitive Presidential election in modern American history. Last month, Mama B. left listeners with a holiday break reading assignment (for those who are political nerds and with time permitting). In this podcast, she will give listeners a very short cliff notes version of this reading assignment, and of course share her opinions on The Republican Mandate for Leadership, Project 2025. She hopes listeners will understand some of the connections between what she learned in Ireland and what she read in Project 2025.

Shortly after Hamas' brutal October 7th attack, Congressman Derrick Van Orden traveled to Israel and visited some of the sites where terrorists massacred innocent civilians. Van Orden, who is a retired Navy Seal and combat medic, was shocked by the massacre's bloody aftermath and the firsthand accounts he heard. This past week, the Wisconsin Republican joined host Dave Anthony to share what he saw in Israel and explain why it's important for the world to know how horrific the Hamas attack was. In the long and graphic discussion, Van Orden also explained why he is adamant about getting aid to Israel and angry as those backing the Palestinians. In fact, he told Dave why he even opposes sending humanitarian aid to Gaza. We made edits for time and thought it was important for you to hear our entire conversation with Rep. Derrick Van Orden. On today's FOX News Rundown Extra, you'll hear the full interview and learn more about the graphic things he witnessed and what America should be doing to support Israel's effort to crush Hamas.
