Pete and Dave dig into the last week with a full review after Pete reminisces about McRunner and Dave recaps his weekend at a meet with his son and wife. Then there is a lot of training talk. A lot. Some common ground. And at the end, we find one of Pete's buttons. In between, they do discuss some more on nutrition spurred by last week's episode. The guys both appreciate the honest and open talk and can't wait for more of it. Season 3 Episode 2 – The Full Fucci Pete and VinoMike take the opportunity to recognize an incredible winemaker, Elena Fucci, in honor of Women's History Month. While we should all celebrate the women in history, in wine, and in every aspect of life all the time, this is a special set of dates to help us move the conversation forward. Pete and Mike may not get it right all the time, but know they are trying. The wine today is Elena Fucci's Titolo 2017. This incredible example of Aglianico del Vulture from Basilicata is not to be missed. Episode 135 – FMC Runs Chicago: Chapter 7 How's the week been for Pete and Dave? Did Dave ever get his labs back? Are they still building that base in training? All of those questions, and much more, get addressed in this big 1:30+ episode. The guys start out with a little track and field indoor national championship discussion. Spoiler – Braedon kicked some butt out there! Dave gives us those results and an overall health update. Then Pete dominates the bulk of the episode with some diabetes and injury talk. Who knows how many times the guys either misspoke or made questionable blanket statements? But, as always, they have a great discussion and both feel much better afterward. Episode 132 – FMC Runs Chicago: Chapter 4 Pete and Dave start off with updates on their health journeys with alcohol and food. Pete gives a detailed update on his bloodwork and Dave shares that he is going to a doc for the first time in a couple of years. They also talk about how the alcohol relationship talk is important to others listening, too. They then turn their attention to the upcoming race season. A little training talk along with some specifics starting to come out about Chicago. Are they planning to run together? Do they have specific goals? How has their outlook evolved? Lots to unpack here. Then a typical Pete moment happens. He invites others to join them running Chicago in 2022. To do that, you'd need a charity entry. Pete offers a $300 donation to the first three that take them up on the challenge. Will anyone answer the call? Will Gretchen rescind the offer? Find out in the coming weeks! Episode 131 – FMC Runs Chicago: Chapter 3 Pete and Dave had one more listener question to address and they spend ample time on it in this episode. The question came from Penny and was about food/ways of eating that the guys have tried. Well, as you can imagine, they've tried a lot, have a ton to say on the subject, and have been concerned about food for many years. Buckle in because it's over an hour and twenty minutes of FMC talk. While Pete and Dave have tried different approaches to weight loss and health, they agree on a lot. In the end, they both agree that you need to find what works for you. They also agree that health needs to be the goal and that maintaining is much tougher than losing. Be true to you and find what works. They would also love to hear your stories, so reach out! Episode 130 – FMC Runs Chicago: Chapter 2 Pete and Dave are back at it. This is another episode that is part podcast/part therapy session. It is important that the guys work through these issues (food, alcohol, mental blocks) to conquer the marathon. They are sure more light-hearted laughs are coming, but this is another more serious discussion. Dave opens up and explains more about how alcohol impacts him and why. Pete does the same while talking about a book recommended from a listener about alcohol control. (The book is called This Naked Mind.) They also answer some listener questions, talk about their time at Bradley now that Pete's son has accepted to go there, and a whole lot more. Keep those questions and subjects coming in! Episode 129 – FMC Runs Chicago: Chapter 1 It's time for Gretchen to (finally) get a break from Pete. And for us all to pray for Dave. This special “season” of the FatMan Chronicles features Pete and Dave – Two middle-aged dads on a journey to conquer the Chicago Marathon. This first chapter is really an overview of their lives and what's coming up. There's a more serious tone to the show this time out as both guys open up about their struggles. They are gearing up to train to run the 2022 Chicago Marathon. How will they get there? What's the plan? How will they balance everything else in life? That's what this series will be all about. There is a bit of an audio issue in this episode as Pete learns some new technology to record remotely. Bear with him as he figures it all out. Episode NotesSeason 2 Episode 3 – Our Last Pandemic-Focused Episode (We Hope)The pandemic is all-consuming. Pete and Nicole need to hash it out one more time, especially as the holidays approach and big decisions need to be made about getting together with family and friends.Nicole starts off by talking about a tough week. Family Thanksgiving, school uncertainty, guilt, and so many other decisions – it is overwhelming. It's like there are no good choices right now. How do you navigate it?Pete chimes in with his take and struggles. There is a lot of overlap between your hosts. He also brings up how to talk to family and friends about the holidays and getting together. It is not easy. Pete and Nicole suggest more listening and empathy than “facts” and judgment.Nicole asks this question – Why are we having this experience right now? This question can help center your thoughts and bring clarity. And she suggests minding your business. That's just solid advice most of the time.Pete and Nicole also have a decently long chat about food. This is a subject they will explore more in future episodes.Pete and Nicole hope this is the last episode, at least for a while, focused on the pandemic. They want to explore other aspects of fear and how to conquer it. They hope their discussions help you understand you are not alone, and that a few of the questions and tools help move you forward. Finally, if you have a story to share, a fear to bring to light, or suggestions on topics you'd like to hear discussed on the podcast, please reach out to either Pete or Nicole on Facebook. Episode NotesSeason 2 Episode 2 – Nothing is All One ThingPete and Nicole are clearly feeling the impact of 2020 as this episode starts at a frenetic pace. Pete comes out hot and shares a ton of what is going on in his head. That's a difficult place to visit right now. Nicole is very similar and shares what's happening at home.As they get into a rhythm, besides it feeling a little like a therapy session for Pete, your co-hosts have a great Q & A. The main theme is the fact that we are living in a time of uncertainty. There is a sense of constant limbo. This is where fear lives and feeds. If you let fear, uncertainty, and doubt win the day, life will seem like a never-ending battle. The good news is that Nicole brought some tools and questions for us. First, she talks about a mindfulness concept called “Drop the Anchor.” In this technique, you stop and ask yourself a series of simple questions. Examples: What day is it? Where am I? Name five things that you see. Name three things that you hear. The point is to bring yourself back to the present and decide how you can proceed.Nicole then asks these two all-important questions:Do I want to stay stuck in the story?Or do I want to behave in alignment with who I want to be?We have a choice. And this brings Nicole back a critical theme in her life – nothing is all one thing. We need to look inside to who we want to be and act in alignment, physically and mentally. One resource Nicole mentions, and Pete fawns over is Victor Frankl's book Man's Search for Meaning. You can find this book on Amazon (this is not an affiliate link and is included only for your convenience). Get the book and read it. Then keep it handy to read again and share with others. Finally, if you have a story to share, a fear to bring to light, or suggestions on topics you'd like to hear discussed on the podcast, please reach out to either Pete or Nicole on Facebook. Episode Notes – Fear is the FactorThe COVID-19 pandemic is the catalyst to the dumpster fire we call 2020. And fear is playing a starring role.I came across an article and study from the University of Arkansas that puts a spotlight on fear and its impact. According to Kevin Fitzpatrick, a professor of sociology at the University of Arkansas and lead author of the study, fear connects the dots to a myriad of potential mental health issues. In other words, fear is the factor.Listen for the eye-opening results of the study and what we can do to help going forward.
