Season 3 Episode 3 – Pure Grace Pete and VinoMike are back with part two of their mini-series honoring women winemakers. Today, the guys feature an extraordinary and uniquely focused winemaker named Angela Osborne. Angela's dedication to the Grenache grape is an inspiration, as is her story that takes her from New Zealand to around the world before settling in the Santa Barbara area of California. The wine today is Angela's A Tribute to Grace 2020 Rosé. Made from 100% Grenache, this pink beauty is drinking incredibly well now and has another year or two ahead of it. In other words, don't sleep on a Rosé of this caliber when it comes to a little bottle age. Also, Pete and Mike pay tribute to other incredible female winemakers in California. Season 3 Episode 2 – The Full Fucci Pete and VinoMike take the opportunity to recognize an incredible winemaker, Elena Fucci, in honor of Women's History Month. While we should all celebrate the women in history, in wine, and in every aspect of life all the time, this is a special set of dates to help us move the conversation forward. Pete and Mike may not get it right all the time, but know they are trying. The wine today is Elena Fucci's Titolo 2017. This incredible example of Aglianico del Vulture from Basilicata is not to be missed. While this beauty is drinking wonderfully now, you'll want to grab a few bottles and lay some down for another decade to get the full enjoyment of this perfectly produced Italian red! Season 3 Episode 1 – Drink Inside the Box Pete and VinoMike are back! And they are exploring the world of boxed wine. Inspired by some social media posts, VinoMike sought out a couple of boxes of wine and the guys thought, “That's an episode.” Don't judge too quickly because there are some really solid wines out there sitting in bladders inside boxes just waiting for you. The first wine is called Schplink!. This 2020 Grüner Veltliner is fresh and delicious. The guys get into both their impressions of the wine and the history of the winery. Amazing that there is this much quality in a 3L box! Next up, there is the non-vintage Sandy Giovese. A blend of 85% Sangiovese and 15% Trebbiano, this is exactly what you would expect – a fun, juicy wine that is very drinkable and not overly serious. There is some surprising complexity in there and would be a perfect wine for just about any picnic or backyard get-together. The guys also discuss some of their other favorite boxed wine choices, a Top 12 list from VinePair, and more. Let the guys know what you think of this show and send some suggestions of boxed wines you've enjoyed. Thank you for listening to That Wine Pod! Season 2 Episode 20 – A Very Spanish Season Finale 2021 has been quite a year. Pete and VinoMike bring it to a close with an hour of discussion about the wines of Spain, featuring a ravishing Rioja red! The guys dig into a bottle of Viña Pomal Rioja Reserva 2014. This incredible example of Rioja is 100% Tempranillo aged in all American oak. The balance is incredible with the earthy mushroom dominating the dried red fruits. Definitely, one to try! The bulk of the episode is an overview of the classic Spanish wine regions of Cava, Rioja, and Priorat. Lots of details in there, so grab a glass of one and enjoy. Season 2 Episode 19 – The Glasshole Bistro: Making of a Wine List Friend of the show, Bill, asked Pete and VinoMike how they would go about making a wine list for their fictional restaurant – The Glasshole Bistro. Well, the guys took this opportunity to not only dive into how they would make a wine list but to give you insights into wine lists from the restaurant and customer perspectives. You know they can't talk about wine without sipping a little. The guys popped the cork on a unique California wine from Field Recordings. The 2020 Field Recording Domo Arigato (Mr. Ramato) is a skin-contact Pinot Grigio. This makes the wine orange in color and completely delicious. If you are wondering if the guys get into the Styx song Mr. Roboto, you probably already know the answer. Let the hosts of That Wine Pod know what you think about this episode. Season 2 Episode 18 – Put a Little Riesling in Your Life Pete and VinoMike are ridiculously excited to talk about Riesling! Riesling is one of the six historical Noble Grapes, yet it is one of the most misunderstood. Great Riesling is not cloyingly sweet. It is balanced and nuanced with amazing acidity and very long aging potential. From bone-dry to wonderfully sweet, Riesling is rightfully a favorite of oenophiles all over the world. To talk through what makes Riesling so special, VinoMike shared a 2010 Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Leistenberg Riesling Kabinett. Although 11 years old, this stunning white offered up fresh fruit, a kiss of honey, and incredible balance. Still youthful, this wine is proof of the fact that Riesling can snuggle up in your cellar for a very long time! Thank you for listening to That Wine Pod! Season 2 Episode 17 – Can This (Wine) Wand Do Magic? Pete and VinoMike channel their inner Harry Potter and test out “The Wand” by Pure Wine. They first mentioned this product a couple of months ago and have been waiting to test it out. What will they think? Is this truly a magic wand? To understand how well “The Wand” works, VinoMike brings a bottle of week-old 2018 Château Pesquié “Les Terrasses” Rouge. This Grenache and Syrah blend is a go-to for both your hosts every vintage. Solid everyday wine that everyone should try! However, when it is a week old, it loses its charm. So, can “The Wand” bring it back? Listen and find out! Thank you for listening to That Wine Pod! Season 2 Episode 16 – A Legendary Bordeaux Estate and Their Chilean Cabernet Pete and VinoMike head back to Chile but this time they find a legendary estate producing premium Cabernet at a price many mortals can afford! Domaines Barons de Rothschild's Los Vascos estate in the Colchagua Valley is known for making great wines at nearly every price point. VinoMike brings up their $7-10 line that offers amazing value. The wine featured today is the 2015 Le Dix de Los Vascos Cabernet Sauvignon and it is a beauty. Sourced from the best parcels in the El Fraile vineyard, Le Dix celebrates the Barons first decade in Chile. The inaugural vintage was in 1998 and the celebration continues today. This is seriously good wine at a fraction of the price you would normally pay for Lafite's Barons wines. Amazing! Thank you for listening to That Wine Pod! Season 2 Episode 15 – We Now Return to Our Regularly Scheduled Wine Drinking Pete and VinoMike are back! We'd say, “And better than ever,” but we can't lie. They are here, though, and let you in on what happened during the hiatus. Hint – Life is busy, complicated, and needs much more wine. While the guys catch up, they pop a very special bottle of Syrah from Cortona in Tuscany. The 2007 Tenimenti Luigi d'Alessandro “Migliara” Syrah is literally a bottle of fun. Tannic, structured, and boasting a ton of flavor, this is a really great wine to get us back into the swing of the podcast. Mostly, this is about the guys reconnecting. Episode NotesSeason 2 Episode 3 – Our Last Pandemic-Focused Episode (We Hope)The pandemic is all-consuming. Pete and Nicole need to hash it out one more time, especially as the holidays approach and big decisions need to be made about getting together with family and friends.Nicole starts off by talking about a tough week. Family Thanksgiving, school uncertainty, guilt, and so many other decisions – it is overwhelming. It's like there are no good choices right now. How do you navigate it?Pete chimes in with his take and struggles. There is a lot of overlap between your hosts. He also brings up how to talk to family and friends about the holidays and getting together. It is not easy. Pete and Nicole suggest more listening and empathy than “facts” and judgment.Nicole asks this question – Why are we having this experience right now? This question can help center your thoughts and bring clarity. And she suggests minding your business. That's just solid advice most of the time.Pete and Nicole also have a decently long chat about food. This is a subject they will explore more in future episodes.Pete and Nicole hope this is the last episode, at least for a while, focused on the pandemic. They want to explore other aspects of fear and how to conquer it. They hope their discussions help you understand you are not alone, and that a few of the questions and tools help move you forward. Finally, if you have a story to share, a fear to bring to light, or suggestions on topics you'd like to hear discussed on the podcast, please reach out to either Pete or Nicole on Facebook. Episode NotesSeason 2 Episode 2 – Nothing is All One ThingPete and Nicole are clearly feeling the impact of 2020 as this episode starts at a frenetic pace. Pete comes out hot and shares a ton of what is going on in his head. That's a difficult place to visit right now. Nicole is very similar and shares what's happening at home.As they get into a rhythm, besides it feeling a little like a therapy session for Pete, your co-hosts have a great Q & A. The main theme is the fact that we are living in a time of uncertainty. There is a sense of constant limbo. This is where fear lives and feeds. If you let fear, uncertainty, and doubt win the day, life will seem like a never-ending battle. The good news is that Nicole brought some tools and questions for us. First, she talks about a mindfulness concept called “Drop the Anchor.” In this technique, you stop and ask yourself a series of simple questions. Examples: What day is it? Where am I? Name five things that you see. Name three things that you hear. The point is to bring yourself back to the present and decide how you can proceed.Nicole then asks these two all-important questions:Do I want to stay stuck in the story?Or do I want to behave in alignment with who I want to be?We have a choice. And this brings Nicole back a critical theme in her life – nothing is all one thing. We need to look inside to who we want to be and act in alignment, physically and mentally. One resource Nicole mentions, and Pete fawns over is Victor Frankl's book Man's Search for Meaning. You can find this book on Amazon (this is not an affiliate link and is included only for your convenience). Get the book and read it. Then keep it handy to read again and share with others. Finally, if you have a story to share, a fear to bring to light, or suggestions on topics you'd like to hear discussed on the podcast, please reach out to either Pete or Nicole on Facebook. Episode Notes – Fear is the FactorThe COVID-19 pandemic is the catalyst to the dumpster fire we call 2020. And fear is playing a starring role.I came across an article and study from the University of Arkansas that puts a spotlight on fear and its impact. According to Kevin Fitzpatrick, a professor of sociology at the University of Arkansas and lead author of the study, fear connects the dots to a myriad of potential mental health issues. In other words, fear is the factor.Listen for the eye-opening results of the study and what we can do to help going forward. Episode Notes Episode 9 – When Grandparents Become Parents Before the coronavirus pandemic hit, we were slated to talk about parenting fears. Like everyone else, my life was upended, and it has taken me all too long to get back to this very important subject. Better late than never though. In this episode, I talked to Karen Smith, before we understood how coronavirus would impact us. Karen was not a parent. Through marriage, she became a grandparent and through circumstances she'll tell us about, ends up raising three small children. Given how difficult parenting is, I cannot imagine stepping up how Karen and her husband have here. The story is fascinating, and Karen shares a lot of wisdom on how she makes this work while focusing every effort directly on those precious children. Thank you for listening to The No Fear Project! Episode NotesNo Fear Friday #24 – Fear of Flying and More with Dava SilviaToday, we are joined Dava Silvia. If her name is familiar, it is because she is a producer of The No Fear Project. What makes it different is that Dava has come on to talk a more common, everyday fear – aviophobia - the fear of flying. But, as you might suspect, our talk becomes so much more. Episode NotesNo Fear Friday #21 – Coping with a Fear of Change with LouiseUnderstanding you have a fear is step one. Admitting it is step two. Finding ways to cope is step three.Today, we talk with “Louise” about her ability to adapt to change based on her experiences in endurance sports. As she goes through a time of transition during the COVID-19 pandemic, she calls on her tools from long-distance sports to find ways to overcome her fear of change. This is a compelling story with a ton of insights. There are some purposeful silences in the audio as Louise considers her answers. Silence is not used enough in our world. I'm in awe of her ability to collect her full thoughts before answering and honor her by leaving the silent gaps in the podcast. We could all learn a lesson here.A big thank you to Louise for sharing her story and strategies. I hope you get as much out of it as I did.As always… The way forward is together. Since the pandemic started, that alert tripled in length. Fear is everywhere. Some of us can handle this culture of fear and go about life. Episode NotesNo Fear Friday #16 – The Power of AndAs the global pandemic continues, the opinions on how to handle the crisis become stronger, especially on social media. That got me thinking about our current world. It seems that we live in a society of “or.” You believe this OR that. You are all-in on something OR you are completely against it.What is the alternative? The answer lies in creativity and the power of “and.” Using information, creativity, and the power of “and” is liberating. Let others wallow in a rigid world of “or” while you find freedom in “and.”There is hope during this crisis. The hope lies in creativity. The hope lies in a simple three-letter word – “and.” Live this way and fear becomes just another part of life. I cannot wait to see where “and” takes us!As always… The way forward is together. Episode NotesNo Fear Friday #15 – A Quote From Maya AngelouThis week will be a shorter, ad-free episode focused on a quote from the poet and civil rights activist, Maya Angelou, I've reflected on. Here is what she wrote:“What is fear of living? It's being preeminently afraid of dying. It is not doing what you came here to do, out of timidity and spinelessness. The antidote is to take full responsibility for yourself – for the time you take up and the space you occupy. If you don't know what you're here to do, then just do some good.”Even as we focus on ourselves each day, we must do some good. We live in an age of fear. Why it is the goal of some to keep us in that state is beyond my comprehension. But we have the ability and strength to beat the fearmongers back while being smart and responsible. The hashtag I started many years ago means so much right now - #bebettertoday. Live those words and watch fear recede. As always… The way forward is together. Episode NotesNo Fear Friday #12 – Permission to FeelThis week, I wanted to get away from the pandemic and all its consequences. Frankly, I'm tired of the fear, uncertainty, and doubt it causes. Between FatMan Chronicles and The No Fear Project, I hear from many people and that has only accelerated during the quarantine period. I've found a common theme in these talks that I want to share today. Most people reach out to me about their health/weight loss journeys or some fear they are working on. Both are deeply personal subjects. Often, they are either thanking the podcasts for helping them in some way or looking for an ear. Regardless of the motivation, there is a common theme most of the time – they are looking for permission to feel.Consider this episode blanket permission to FEEL.As always… The way forward is together. Episode NotesNo Fear Friday #7 – Pandemic FearWe are in the midst of a pandemic with the coronavirus called COVID-19. The reactions online range from disbelief, and even some calling it a hoax, to complete panic. Most of us fall somewhere in between those extremes. One thing is clear, fear is gripping our world. Uncertainty and a lack of information often cause fear. That is a lot of what is happening here.People are worried. People are afraid right now. An ear and a kind word will go much further than trying to explain something that, frankly, most of us know little about. I don't know how we stop a virus. I do know that we have the ability, right here and right now, to help ease the fears of our family, friends, and neighbors.Be safe and be kind.As always, remember… The way forward is together. Episode NotesNo Fear Friday #5 – Weight, Health & FearThere will be full episodes on this subject down the road, but I wanted to talk a little about it now. On the FatMan Chronicles podcast, my wife, Gretchen, and I tackle the subjects of weight loss and health. For many years, I believed that weight directly equated to health. My fear was that if I didn't find a way to lose weight, I would be unhealthy. That fear held me back from doing things to live an active and healthy lifestyle. If I was fat, what was the use? My bloodwork and overall health would be terrible anyway, so why try?But we are all individuals, or as I like to say, n=1. What is the ideal weight anyway?I can only speak for myself in terms of the fears around weight. I cover these personal fears and try to get to a place where we work together to conquer them As always, remember… The way forward is together. The time to conquer is now.Thank you for listening to The No Fear Project! Episode NotesEpisode 7 – Wrap-Up: Fear of Failure & Fear of SuccessOver the last three episodes, we heard from people about their experiences with fear of failure and fear of success. I learned a ton. I hope you did too.In this episode, I wanted to talk to you about why I chose these fears to start with, summarize what we learned, and present one more piece of this puzzle that both of our expert guests brought up in our discussions. My why started out altruistic. I wanted others to learn about these fears and share. As I got into the fears, I realized that I was experiencing them. The lessons from Derek, Kirsten, Dean, and Rob motivated me to do more. I owe them big-time.Here are three key takeaways from our fear of failure and fear of success discussions.Fear of failure and fear of success are two sides of the same coin. Both fears are rooted in self-sabotage.Although the fear of failure is common and more people identify with it, the bigger issue may be fear of success.Impostor syndrome is real. We need to explore this further in future episodes and see how it connects to fear. And there was one more takeaway from our experts that I found vitally important, but that didn't fit in the main episodes. Both Ayrin Hnosko, a licensed clinical social worker, and Joe Van Hannak, a licensed professional therapist brought up the topic – trauma.Trauma is difficult. I'm not equipped to help. I am merely facilitating a story. I need to tread lightly here and because it is tough, I shied away. I will find a way to balance this because I know some stories that need to get told and they are rooted in trauma.Thank you for listening to The No Fear Project! Episode NotesEpisode 6 – Fear of SuccessThe idea of the fear of success had me stumped. Who fears success? Well, maybe I do.Two of our experts, Ayrin Hnosko and Joe Van Hannak, helped me understand the prevalence and underlying psychological aspects of the fear. Between that, reading, listening to others, and reflecting, I came up with a definition. The real help was listening to the story of Dean Schuldt. Dean both performs our original theme music and is a patron of the podcast, as well as a friend for over 20 years. Dean's insights into how his fear started and how it continues to impact his life were eye-opening. His story will touch you and hopefully help.Thank you for listening to The No Fear Project! Episode NotesEpisode 5 – Fear of Failure: Part 2In this episode, we share the story of Kirsten Reynolds who continues to fight through her nearly lifelong fear of failure. We will also touch base with Rob Schelp who has conquered his fear and has some amazing insights.Kirsten's story is one that needs to be told. She had obstacles in her life, and she worked to overcome them. Instead of giving up on her dreams, she found a way to store them deep inside until the time was right to pursue them again. And regardless of the outcome, Kirsten's strength is a shining example of how to live and overcome a fear of failure.Rob's story is different in that he has conquered his fear. It does show up here and there, but he has the tools to cope. The end of the episode draws conclusions based on the interviews in episodes four and five. Episode NotesEpisode 4 – Fear of Failure: Part 1We need to start somewhere, and we are going with Fear of Failure. This common fear surrounds us, and many of us may relate to it. When the fear crosses over to something more irrational and intense, it is called atychiphobia. These clinical names are going to be fun!Anyway, we will divide the Fear of Failure into two episodes. In Part 1, we will define fear of failure and talk to Derek Coulter about how he experiences it. In Part 2, we will explore the story of Kirsten Reynolds and talk to Rob Schelp who has learned how to conquer this fear.Derek brings up imposter syndrome. That is an interesting topic that we will explore in the future. In the end, Derek mostly feels failure at work, and a bit when it comes to his kids. Others feel this throughout their lives. If you experience fear of failure, let us know by posting in The No Fear Project group or shooting Pete a note on Facebook or Instagram.Thank you for listening to The No Fear Project! Episode NotesNo Fear Friday #4 – Fear, Love & LifeI listen to a lot of podcasts. One of my favorite running-related podcasts is Ten Junk Miles. At the end of one recent episode, Scott played the audio from a wedding he officiated for two of his close friends. After some background banter, the ceremony starts, and Sam delivers a heartfelt set of vows that nearly brought me to tears. Then the groom, Aaron, started his vows to his soon-to-be bride, by saying, “I choose you.”I was listening to this while running and it made me stop, literally. I had to collect myself. I've heard these words before, they are not unique. Yet hearing them at that moment on that day struck me in a profound way.As you go forward this weekend, this week, this year, think about the words Aaron said to Sam. They are so simple, yet not easy to verbalize. Here's the promise, though, of “I choose you” – those words will make your life better. I choose you.As always, remember… The way forward is together. Episode NotesNo Fear Friday #3 – Fear, Love & LifeIn this Valentine's Day edition of No Fear Friday, Pete reflects on this quote from Bertrand Russell: “To fear love is to fear life, and those who fear life are already three parts dead.”This quote may seem ominous, especially given the day, but it is full of hope. Pete walks us through the message behind this quote while relating a real-life story to prove the point. He reminds us that love is a skill. And that enough love will not leave any room for fear. Practice love and defeating fear, and life is amazing! As always, remember… The way forward is together. The time to conquer is now.Thank you for listening to The No Fear Project! Episode NotesEpisode 3 – What is Fear?In order to move forward, we need a common definition of fear. Isn't that obvious? Well, Pete found out that people define fear in all kinds of ways.To find the best answer for The No Fear Project, Pete first sought out two Licensed Professional Counselors – Joe Van Hannak and Nicole Wildes. He also asked people in the Facebook group and these answers were much more diverse. There was one person that Pete reached out to interview from the group, David Girault, because his take was more in synch with the pros. The conclusion is that fear is defined on a continuum. Regardless of the word used, the common term here is fear.Thank you for listening to The No Fear Project! Episode NotesNo Fear Friday #1 – CuriosityIn this first edition of No Fear Friday, Pete talks about a quote that inspired his 2020 One Word.
