Season 3 Episode 2 – The Full Fucci Pete and VinoMike take the opportunity to recognize an incredible winemaker, Elena Fucci, in honor of Women's History Month. While we should all celebrate the women in history, in wine, and in every aspect of life all the time, this is a special set of dates to help us move the conversation forward. Pete and Mike may not get it right all the time, but know they are trying. The wine today is Elena Fucci's Titolo 2017. This incredible example of Aglianico del Vulture from Basilicata is not to be missed. While this beauty is drinking wonderfully now, you'll want to grab a few bottles and lay some down for another decade to get the full enjoyment of this perfectly produced Italian red! Season 3 Episode 1 – Drink Inside the Box Pete and VinoMike are back! And they are exploring the world of boxed wine. Inspired by some social media posts, VinoMike sought out a couple of boxes of wine and the guys thought, “That's an episode.” Don't judge too quickly because there are some really solid wines out there sitting in bladders inside boxes just waiting for you. The first wine is called Schplink!. This 2020 Grüner Veltliner is fresh and delicious. The guys get into both their impressions of the wine and the history of the winery. Amazing that there is this much quality in a 3L box! Next up, there is the non-vintage Sandy Giovese. A blend of 85% Sangiovese and 15% Trebbiano, this is exactly what you would expect – a fun, juicy wine that is very drinkable and not overly serious. There is some surprising complexity in there and would be a perfect wine for just about any picnic or backyard get-together. The guys also discuss some of their other favorite boxed wine choices, a Top 12 list from VinePair, and more. Let the guys know what you think of this show and send some suggestions of boxed wines you've enjoyed. Thank you for listening to That Wine Pod! Season 2 Episode 19 – The Glasshole Bistro: Making of a Wine List Friend of the show, Bill, asked Pete and VinoMike how they would go about making a wine list for their fictional restaurant – The Glasshole Bistro. Well, the guys took this opportunity to not only dive into how they would make a wine list but to give you insights into wine lists from the restaurant and customer perspectives. You know they can't talk about wine without sipping a little. The guys popped the cork on a unique California wine from Field Recordings. The 2020 Field Recording Domo Arigato (Mr. Ramato) is a skin-contact Pinot Grigio. This makes the wine orange in color and completely delicious. If you are wondering if the guys get into the Styx song Mr. Roboto, you probably already know the answer. Let the hosts of That Wine Pod know what you think about this episode. Season 2 Episode 18 – Put a Little Riesling in Your Life Pete and VinoMike are ridiculously excited to talk about Riesling! Riesling is one of the six historical Noble Grapes, yet it is one of the most misunderstood. Great Riesling is not cloyingly sweet. It is balanced and nuanced with amazing acidity and very long aging potential. From bone-dry to wonderfully sweet, Riesling is rightfully a favorite of oenophiles all over the world. To talk through what makes Riesling so special, VinoMike shared a 2010 Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Leistenberg Riesling Kabinett. Although 11 years old, this stunning white offered up fresh fruit, a kiss of honey, and incredible balance. Still youthful, this wine is proof of the fact that Riesling can snuggle up in your cellar for a very long time! Thank you for listening to That Wine Pod! Season 2 Episode 17 – Can This (Wine) Wand Do Magic? Pete and VinoMike channel their inner Harry Potter and test out “The Wand” by Pure Wine. They first mentioned this product a couple of months ago and have been waiting to test it out. What will they think? Is this truly a magic wand? To understand how well “The Wand” works, VinoMike brings a bottle of week-old 2018 Château Pesquié “Les Terrasses” Rouge. This Grenache and Syrah blend is a go-to for both your hosts every vintage. Solid everyday wine that everyone should try! However, when it is a week old, it loses its charm. So, can “The Wand” bring it back? Listen and find out! Thank you for listening to That Wine Pod! Season 2 Episode 16 – A Legendary Bordeaux Estate and Their Chilean Cabernet Pete and VinoMike head back to Chile but this time they find a legendary estate producing premium Cabernet at a price many mortals can afford! Domaines Barons de Rothschild's Los Vascos estate in the Colchagua Valley is known for making great wines at nearly every price point. VinoMike brings up their $7-10 line that offers amazing value. The wine featured today is the 2015 Le Dix de Los Vascos Cabernet Sauvignon and it is a beauty. Sourced from the best parcels in the El Fraile vineyard, Le Dix celebrates the Barons first decade in Chile. The inaugural vintage was in 1998 and the celebration continues today. This is seriously good wine at a fraction of the price you would normally pay for Lafite's Barons wines. Amazing! Thank you for listening to That Wine Pod! Season 2 Episode 15 – We Now Return to Our Regularly Scheduled Wine Drinking Pete and VinoMike are back! We'd say, “And better than ever,” but we can't lie. They are here, though, and let you in on what happened during the hiatus. Hint – Life is busy, complicated, and needs much more wine. While the guys catch up, they pop a very special bottle of Syrah from Cortona in Tuscany. The 2007 Tenimenti Luigi d'Alessandro “Migliara” Syrah is literally a bottle of fun. Tannic, structured, and boasting a ton of flavor, this is a really great wine to get us back into the swing of the podcast. Mostly, this is about the guys reconnecting. Season 2 Episode 14 – Wine Biz Insider: Climate Change, Insurance & Your Bottle Can we all agree that climate change is happening? Take out the why and just look at all the natural disasters occurring at a rapid rate around the globe. Wine country is not immune to nature's wrath. The fact is that wine is a business. Sure, we romanticize what that business is and what it represents, but it is a money-making operation, nonetheless. Winery owners must balance caring for the land, paying a fair wage to their workers, and running a sustainable business. When fires, drought, labor shortages, politics, and a pandemic all converge at once on the winery, what happens? Pete and VinoMike recently came across an article from the New York Times about insurance companies raising rates at wineries or, worse, canceling their policies altogether. This puts small wineries out of business or increases the cost of your bottle substantially. While the guys walk you through this important subject, they sip on a bottle of 2018 Localism Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is actually from the cool-climate Coombsville AVA and that definitely shines through. The bottle was given to the guys by superfan Kenny Kim. Season 2 Episode 13 – Give Chile a Chance Today, Pete and VinoMike travel south of the equator to explore the oft-misunderstood wines of Chile! The guys take you on a whirlwind tour of this skinny South American country while sipping on a bottle of 2018 Viña Tinajas “Lorenzo & Gaspar” Carménère & Merlot. This wine gives them a chance to tell you about the strange history of Carménère in Chile. Today, the vast majority of the grape is grown here and has become synonymous with the country. But should it? The rest of the episode is dedicated to an exploration of the wines of Chile. From Cabernet Sauvignon to Pinot Noir, the guys lead you through as many regions as possible. Season 2 Episode 12 – Ask the Glassholes It's the first-ever “Ask the Glassholes” episode! Ok, maybe the last too. We'll see how this goes. Pete and VinoMike are here to take your hard-hitting wine questions. They sent out the Glass Signal, and you responded in droves. At least 10 of you submitted questions. That's three times as many as they expected! They start to tackle the questions while sipping on a special 2010 Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino. The wine is spectacular and has a ton of life ahead of it. The guys spend the entire LONG episode answering your questions from what other Sangiovese to try to why it takes so long to get wine shipped to talking about Tokaji to what's up with the Wine Wand. Season 2 Episode 11 – A Nebbiolo Wonder(wall) It's VinoMike's choice today and he brought something off the (wonder)wall – a Nebbiolo from the Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara AVA! From Andrew Jones, the 2019 Wonderwall Nebbiolo is a deliciously fun wine-drinking experience. Made from 90% Nebbiolo and 10% Barbera, this juicy California red brings that telltale high acidity and tannins wrapped in ripe and perfectly balanced New World fruit. Clocking in at a modest 13.1% ABV, you can chill this one to drink with some grilled Italian sausages any weekend this summer. The guys also talk about a few other fun wines from Andrew's Field Recordings label, including the perfect for the heat Tang. Like a refreshing cross of slightly sparkling wine, cider, and a craft sour beer, this is one to seek out. Finally, the guys put out the call for questions for their first “Ask the Glassholes” show. Season 2 Episode 10 – Curious About Campania You knew it wouldn’t be long before Pete and VinoMike returned to their first wine love – Italy! Today, the guys take you on a wine tour of the under-appreciated wine region of Campania. While they touch on the great reds of the area, the episode is all about white wines. As the weather turns warmer and we can start to gather together once again, these are the wines you want to seek out. The episode is centered on a bottle of 2019 Terredora DiPaolo “Corte di Giso” Falanghina. This single-vineyard stunner offers a ton of fresh fruit and minerality. Season 2 Episode 9 – Say Yes! To Michigan Wine Pete found a bottle of premium Michigan Pinot Noir at a local shop. (Shout out to Charlene at Cellar 406.) You know that he and VinoMike were going to talk about it. That bottle is a single-vineyard, 2015 Wyncroft Pinot Noir from the Fenville AVA in SW Michigan. The bottle was exquisite with true Pinot Noir charm and subtlety. The flavors were exactly what you would expect from the varietal with a surprising bit of energy still showing. The guys highly recommend seeking out a few bottles from Wyncroft and other Michigan wineries! While sipping on the wine, VinoMike, with a little assist from Pete, walks you through Michigan wine regions. There is even some wine history thrown in there. If you have never thought about Michigan for dry wine, or as a pioneer in the development of the US wine industry, you are in for a surprise. Finally, Pete brings up an article about global wine consumption during 2020. Spoiler – it was down! That doesn’t happen often. Is it the pandemic or a trend? Let us know your thoughts. Season 2 Episode 8 – Two Mics and a Bottle of (Cheap) Cabernet This week the guys decided to just flip the mics on and have a chat. So, they grabbed a bottle of wine and just started talking. The bottle is from Costco – 2018 K Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon. There are three things you need to know about this wine. First, it is from Bulgaria. Second, it was under ten bucks. And third, it beats the hell out of Pete’s and VinoMike’s expectations because this is one solid bottle of wine! Otherwise, the guys just catch up about their lives and what is going on in the world of wine. Pete may fail a geography lesson in there, too. This is what That Wine Pod was always supposed to be – a couple of glassholes with some industry experience chatting in a basement. Season 2 Episode 7 – Magnificent Muscadet There is no doubt that Italy is at the very heart of Pete’s and VinoMike’s love of wine. The Loire Valley is a close second and the guys talk a look at the magnificence of Muscadet today. VinoMike went to the storage locker and pulled out a gem – the 2014 Domaine de la Pépière “Clos des Briords” Sèvre et Maine Sur Lie. A mouthful of a name and a wine. There is no doubt that the freshness and complexity of this Muscadet impress your hosts. VinoMike believes it is still a baby with many more great years ahead. Good thing he bought six of them! If the food pairings don’t get you, the description of the region and wines by VinoMike will. The region is amazing with tough soil, sheer cliffs, and some of the best white wine values in the world. Season 2 Episode 6 – Taint That a Shame The guys start out this episode with a tribute to the late Steven Spurrier. Mr. Spurrier was a huge influence on wine in general, but especially on California. He put together the famous judgment at Paris that put California wine on the world map. His passing is a great loss for the wine world. Pete and Mike send their condolences to Steven’s family and friends. After this tribute, the talk turns to the crux of the episode. VinoMike was reading an article about a breakthrough in the cork industry to eliminate cork taint and thought, “That’s an episode!” So, Pete and VinoMike grabbed a bottle of Brianne Day’s 2014 Johan Vineyard Pinot Noir, popped the cork, and sat down to record. Before getting to the main discussion, they share their love of Brianne’s wines. If you want some seriously delicious Pinot Noir, check her out! Now, on to the taint show. Cork taint is caused by bacteria and chlorine forming a compound called TCA. That flaw in the cork gets into the wine to make it smell like wet cardboard (or wet dog). It is unpleasant to say the least. Luckily for wine consumers, there is a breakthrough by the world’s largest cork manufacturer, Amorim, that eliminates TCA. What a relief it will be to open a great bottle you’ve been aging properly with nearly full confidence it will be good. This will help consumers, retailers, and restaurants tremendously. Season 2 Episode 4 – A Visit to Valpolicella Pete and VinoMike return to Italy to visit the Veneto region and one of its stars – Valpolicella! The guys jump right in and start with tasting the 2016 Ripassa Valpolicella Superiore from Zenato. This classic wine is a blend of Corvina (85%) and Rondinella (10%) with the rest an indigenous grape, Oseleta. The dried grape component does shine through in this big red while balanced with incredible structure and a bit of unusually grippy tannins. Wait until you hear the food pairings. The bulk of the episode is filled with facts about Ripasso, Amarone, and the rest of the wines in the region. There are new rules in Valpolicella and VinoMike fills you in on the ones that matter. Along the way, Dave unknowingly created a category – big California red blends – that still intrigues wine drinkers everywhere. There is so much to this story! They also give you the inside scoop on how Mr. Phinney had to wait to make another Zinfandel-based blend for eight long years. Season 2 Episode 1 – Later 2020. Hello, 2021! Pete and VinoMike are back for season two! In this episode, the guys will catch up a bit and then celebrate by popping a bottle of bubbly. They only thought it appropriate to open a sparkler from America. The 2015 Argyle Vintage Brut comes from Oregon. The legendary Rollin Soles founded Argyle in 1987 specifically to make traditional sparkling wine. The wine is fantastic, and the guys give you their usual full take. Next up is a review of the 2020 predictions they made a year ago. Even with COVID-19 interrupting our daily lives, they got several predictions right. Some were even accelerated by the impact of the virus. So, what do they think will happen in the wine industry in 2021? They share five predictions and discuss what that may mean for the wine world. Episode 44 – Sulfites: Friend or Foe? Pete and VinoMike are here to help you decipher the mystery of sulfites in wine. Seriously, this issue is a constant in their careers and it was time to try to help sort out the facts. The guys are in separate studios during the pandemic resurgence and only Pete pops a bottle this week. He needs to retaste a bottle of 2016 Xavier Vignon “Cuvée Anonyme” Châteauneuf-du-Pape. A gorgeous and already drinkable CdP, this one will get even better with time. If you are a fan of this region or want to just check it out, this is a fun bottle to get in your glass. The majority of the episode is about those sulfites. What are they? Are they necessary? Are they the cause of your headaches? And lots more. Here are our spoilers… Sulfites are natural. They are produced during fermentation. While not fully necessary, you will want to understand why they are important. And, no, they do not give you a headache. The guys use a couple of articles as references that you can check out, including this one from Bon Appetit and this one from SevenFifty.com. Thank you for listening to That Wine Pod! Episode 43 – Much Ado About Malbec Pete and VinoMike are ready to talk Malbec! This is one of the most popular grape varietals out there, but that’s a relatively new phenomenon. How did we get from an obscure grape that was used mostly for blending in France to a powerhouse red from Argentina? The guys will walk you through the history and how they came to love the grape. After the history and regional lessons, VinoMike shares that he is drinking a 2013 Colomé “Altura Máxima” Malbec. This is from the highest elevations in Argentina, and they claim the world, for wine production. This bottle shows off the rugged and ageable side of Argentine Malbec. A gift to VinoMike from some dear friends, this is a special bottle in several ways. Pete breaks open something for everyday drinking – the 2018 Catena Malbec. This wine is usually $15 to $20. It comes from a trio of high mountain vineyards (3,000 to 5,000 feet above sea level) and is an outstanding value. Although this wine can age for a decade, it is really made to be consumed young. This is perfect for taco Tuesday, burger Thursday or really anytime you want to enjoy! The guys wrap it up by talking about some pairings for Malbec. Then they got hungry and had to go! Episode 42 – It’s a Piedmont Party! (With an Offer You Can’t Refuse) Pete and VinoMike are back after a week off due to, well, 2020. This year is all about adapting and the guys are giving it their best shot. Once again, they are forced to record from separate studios. There were only a few tears shed before the recording began. To ease the burden, your hosts each pop a bottle from their favorite wine region – Piedmont! VinoMike starts it off with a beautiful bottle of Barbaresco from Beivuma. The 2016 Beivuma “Valeirano” Barbaresco. This private label comes from the Ada Nada winery, one of the absolute gems of Barbaresco. It is a single-vineyard offering that offers insane value. There are only a few others making wine from this vineyard and those bottles go for upwards of $100 a bottle, and as much as $200. This one? About $43. If you can get it, buy it! (Reach out to your hosts and they will see if they can help.) The guys wax poetic about truffles during this segment. There is nothing – NOTHING – like Nebbiolo and truffles. If you have never tried this pairing, now is the time. (And there is a special offer below to help you if you live in IL.) Next up, Pete also chooses a Barbera d’Alba from Ghiomo. The 2018 Ghiomo “Lavai” Barbera d’Alba is absolutely delicious and a perfect choice for your Thanksgiving table. Much softer and approachable than the young Nebbiolo VinoMike had in his glass. Both wines definitely offer pure joy and are worth seeking out. Pete and VinoMike finish up the show talking about the first offer of wines from Wines On The Bluff. This is a new project from Thad Morrow and features wines from their friend, Paolo at Beivuma. They are currently shipping to IL. The case includes six bottles (two each) of some of the best Piedmont has to offer. This includes five single-vineyard offerings with a pair of Baroli and even a ten-year-old Ghemme from La Torretta. The wines alone are worth the $400. But they throw in a black truffle imported directly from Italy. Seriously, Pete and VinoMike may have sounded like an infomercial but they just really wanted to show how great this offer is. Get it while you can because truffles don’t last forever! Click HERE to check out the full offer from Wines On The Bluff. Please be sure to tell them you heard about it on That Wine Pod! NOTE – This is NOT a sponsored segment. Episode 41 – Brave Women Expose Sexual Misconduct in the Court of Master Sommeliers On October 29, 2020, the New York Times published an article titled – “The Wine World’s Most Elite Circle Has a Sexual Harassment Problem.” Please read the article when you have time. It is vitally important that we listen to the women who expose the rampant, systemic sexual misconduct issues at the Court of Master Sommeliers. In this episode, Pete and VinoMike bring you their take on the subject and insights from the industry. There is no wine and no frivolity. They make it clear upfront that they are two middle-aged white dudes and have ZERO idea what it is like to be a woman in this environment being harassed and sexually assaulted. They acknowledge they will make mistakes in this episode. Please understand that their intent and heart are in the right places. The hosts also go through the Court’s response. As usual, it falls flat. You can read the two responses from the Court on October 29th and November 1st. Judge for yourself if these responses give you any hope of real change. Mike takes the opportunity to strongly denounce the Court. This is difficult for him given the history and his hard work. This is easy for him because he wants no part of an organization with these systemic problems. Pete is an outsider from the Court but knows and has worked with many people in the industry. He says the Court needs to be disbanded and a new organization needs to fill the void. Since recording this in the afternoon of November 2nd, many in the Court have come forward with more stories of sexual harassment and assault at the hands of Master Somms, resigned, suspended their membership, called for a boycott, called for a full replacement of the board of directors on the Court, and made passionate pleas on social media. Pete and Mike applaud these efforts to effect change. It is too late for the brave women who have already come forward. Something must be done to stop it from happening again. Episode 40 – Pop the Champagne! Pete and VinoMike are out of their minds excited for this very special Champagne episode. You can tell they are giddy from the get-go. The inspiration for this show was a listener request along with an AP article that tells the woeful tale of the Champagne industry during the pandemic. But, before they get to all of that, it’s time to pop the cork. The guys decided to sip on a bit of Étienne Doué "Cuvée Sélection" Brut NV. With this beautiful bubbly as the backdrop, they dive into the Champagne region and what makes it especially wonderful. The episode is lengthy. Entertaining? Perhaps. Full of Champagne facts? Yep. Passion? Oh, yeah. Lots of recommendations? Abso-freakin-lutely! If you have questions on this legendary wine region, let the guys know. They covered a lot of ground but there is so much more to these sparklers and where they come from. Episode 39 – Behind the Scenes: Wine Dinners (with a Special Martini) Pete and VinoMike are about to take you behind the scenes of wine dinners. Those dinners seem fairly easy and lucrative. Are they? What’s really going on? While the guys talk about these dinners, they sip on a special bottling from Louis M. Martini. The 2014 Louis Martini Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a phenomenal wine. This wine is so good that it made the great Robert Parker lose his mind and award 97 points. While Pete and Mike don’t normally talk about points and reviews, this one was worth it. What are your thoughts on wine dinners? Would you still attend if they were twice the price? They decide to start with Gigondas by highlighting their thoughts on the 2010 Saint-Damien Vieilles Vignes. This is a remarkably fresh bottle, and the guys take a deep dive into the wine and region. Episode 37 – Into the Heart of Napa Pete and VinoMike are back after a one-week hiatus. Did you miss them? Before you answer, they take the first ten minutes or so to catch-up on their kids and remote school. We highly recommend you have a nice glass of Napa wine in front of you to get through that chat. Or just fast forward if you want to get right into the wine. The guys wanted to talk Napa, especially with the Glass Fire impacting so many homes, vineyards, businesses, and families. It is truly heartbreaking to see the devastation caused by the many fires raging on the west coast this year. If you can buy a few extra bottles of Napa wines and/or contribute directly to help those in need, please do so. Before they get into talking about the fires, they pop a bottle of red from the Hill Family Estate – the 2016 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Both Pete and VinoMike are effusive in their praise of this wine. They walk you through a bit of the history of the estate, which mirrors many stories you here in the region. They share tasting notes, technical knowledge, and memories of visiting Napa. The area clearly holds a special place in both their hearts. Mike also shares a story about a little (socially distanced) wine get-together he went to recently. It is great to hear a little bit of normalcy during this time. Episode 36 – Allez Alsace! After a recent episode, Pete and VinoMike asked you, the listeners, about what regions you’d like to hear about. Rob Michaels answered the call by suggesting Alsace. The guys couldn’t wait to dig in! The wine for this episode comes from the iconic Alsatian estate, Trimbach. The Trimbach Pinot Blanc 2019 is fantastic. The guys give a full review of this one and highly recommend giving it a try. The rest of the episode is all about sharing their knowledge of this historic wine region that lives in France today but has often been part of Germany. Sandwiched between the Vosges Mountains and the Rhine River, the climate is ideal for several classic white varietals. The value here is outstanding for the quality. Get to know Alsace! Episode 35 – An Ode to Oregon There are fires raging up and down the west coast. Pete and VinoMike wanted to talk about the impact of these devastating fires on the wine industry in Oregon while sharing their love of the region. The wine for this special episode comes from one of their favorite small, family-owned estates – the 2012 Beckham “Dow’s” Pinot Noir. Beckham Estate Vineyard is in the Chehalem Mountains in the Willamette Valley. The wine is spectacular and gives the guys an opportunity to talk about what makes Oregon such a special wine region. The deadly fires are causing so much damage to property and threaten to devastate the 2020 vintage in Oregon. Some wineries are pressing on while others have flat-out canceled the harvest. Another 2020 tragedy to overcome. Please consider helping the victims of the fire and support the wineries by picking up some incredible Oregon bottles. Thank you for listening to That Wine Pod! Episode 34 – A Bit of Burgundy There is so much to cover in Burgundy. Where to start? Pete and VinoMike decided to start with an entry-level red. Basic Burgundy. That’s right – “Ya basic.” They popped open a 2015 Aubert Lefas “Les Grandes Carelles” Bourgogne. This Craig Baker Selection offers the guys plenty to give you a red Burgundy primer. From talking about the varietal to geography to vintage variation and more, they drop some knowledge to get you started. And if you already know about Burgundy, they give you plenty to look for on this bottle and beyond. Episode 33 – We’re Drinking F^#@&%! Merlot The weather is better. Pete and VinoMike are outside and, yes, they are drinking fucking Merlot! The guys couldn’t wait for this episode. Sixteen years after Sideways first hit the big screen, Merlot is still trying to recover from the famous, and misinterpreted, line from Miles. Pete and VinoMike talk about this in detail, but first, wine. Pete pulled one of his favorite bottles of Merlot for this episode and it was a new one on VinoMike. The 2015 Roark Wine Company Merlot is gorgeous. Fruit, herbs, acid, and silky tannins combine to make for really amazing wine. The fact that this is a natural wine takes a back seat to the pure enjoyment. As usual, Pete and Mike dive into other Merlot bottlings and regions they enjoy. Let them know about your favorite Merlot. Thank you for listening to That Wine Pod! Be sure to subscribe in your favorite podcast app. And remember… Life’s short. Drink what you like tonight! Episode 32 – A GrüVe Kind of Show The weather is scorching and Pete and VinoMike need a bottle of white – stat! Thankfully, VinoMike had a 2013 Weingut Knoll“Ried Schütt” Smagard Grüner Veltliner just begging to be drunk. After some discussion of what education looks like in 2020, this wine prompts a long discussion about Austria’s famous white wine. VinoMike leads a discussion about Grüner and the different styles you’ll find. Pete and Mike also give you tips on what to look for when shopping for this incredibly versatile varietal, along with some stories from their wine industry experiences. Let’s get GrüVe! As a reminder, Pete and Mike do not accept advertising dollars from wineries or wine wholesalers. They purchase the bottles they taste on the show. These are not paid endorsements. Episode Notes Episode 31 – We Heart Chianti Pete and VinoMike often profess their love for Italian wine. In this episode, the duo heads to Tuscany to talk Chianti. To put this discussion in perspective, they dive into a bottle of 2016 Poggerino Chianti Classico. This is an incredible wine that offers insane value. Imported by their pal Paolo at Beivuma, this is one you need to find. Buy a case – at least! VinoMike drops knowledge on all things Chianti – from normale to Classico to Classico Riserva and more. Pete chimes in with a bit of knowledge, too. If you haven’t tried Chianti in awhile, now is the time. As a reminder, Pete and Mike do not accept advertising dollars from wineries or wine wholesalers. Well, the guys decided to try it while they talk about the entire “clean” wine movement. Let the shenanigans begin! Both Pete and VinoMike pull no punches in this one. They give their take on “clean” wine as a marketing ploy along with a review of the Avaline wines. Let’s just say they may not be invited to dinner at Cameron’s anytime soon. As a reminder, Pete and Mike do not accept advertising dollars from wineries or wine wholesalers. They purchase the bottles they taste on the show. These are not paid endorsements. Episode 108 – Not Badger Trail Races Pete and Gretchen are outside for this special episode of the FatMan Chronicles. They start out with a lengthy #viewsfromthecouch from Gretchen. After that bit of ugliness, the couple regales you with stories about their trip to Wisconsin. This was supposed to be the weekend of the Badger Trail Races. They were canceled due to the ongoing pandemic. Yet, Pete and Gretchen made the most of it. Pete didn’t have a podcast for you this week to check out. He’ll have one next time. Episode Notes Episode 29 – Celebrity Wines: Hot or Not? Pete and VinoMike decided to tackle the ever-expanding world of celebrity wines! Are these gems or duds? Are all celeb wines created equal? They decided to discuss celebrity wines because of this article from Esquire. To explore the topic, they first pop open a bottle of rosé from Post Malone - Maison No. 9. And, as usual, these two don’t hold back. The episode wraps with VinoMike bringing up Cameron Diaz and the concept of “clean” wine. You can probably guess how these two react to this marketing angle. Let them know if you want to hear a full episode on this hot topic. As a reminder, Pete and Mike do not accept advertising dollars from wineries or wine wholesalers. Episode Notes Episode 28 – Hidden Gems After a week away, Pete and VinoMike are back! The reason for the off week was a death in Pete’s wife’s family. Gretchen’s Aunt Vicky – her Godmother – passed away suddenly. Pete spent a full week in Nebraska with her family being a supportive spouse. This show is dedicated to Aunt Vicky and we thank her for her service to our country. While away, there was a lot of family time. One thing Pete did was go to a hidden gem of a restaurant in tiny West Point, Nebraska called The Bohemian Duck. The food was incredible and the wine list surprising. He found Porter Creek Syrah and Pamplin Cabernet Sauvignon. And to pair with the duck, he was thrilled to find R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia 2007. To find these wines in such a small place in the middle of small-town Nebraska was a real treat! VinoMike talked about a hidden gem in Las Vegas – Lotus of Siam. The spicy Thai food goes perfectly with German Riesling and Mike talks about the huge list they feature. A small sampling of the list is online but you gotta be there for the full experience! Pete also talks about visiting a couple of places in Omaha – WineStyles and Corkscrew. Pete started his wine career as an owner of WineStyles and he enjoyed that trip down memory lane. He also talked about finding Ameztoi Txakolina at Corkscrew. Another hidden gem! The duo winds down the episode talking about supporting local as much as possible in the pandemic. Let’s be safe and keep these local hidden gems going! As a reminder, Pete and Mike do not accept advertising dollars from wineries or wine wholesalers. They purchase the bottles they taste on the show. These are not paid endorsements. They could use the money, so this integrity thing sucks. Thank you for listening to That Wine Pod! He may have shared this before, but he feels compelled to rail on about it again. Finally, the couple promotes their love of Mr. Bevis dry rubs. Episode Notes Episode 27 – Who’s Down with DTC? Empathy Pete and VinoMike tackle a surging trend in the wine world – Direct-to-Consumer (DTC). The guys explain that this is basically a way for wineries to skip the three-tier system to get wine to customers directly. Can be great for wineries and wine drinkers. Maybe not so good for retailers or restaurants. They decided to talk about DTC after VinoMike sent an article to Pete about Constellation Brandsbuying DTC winery, Empathy. Empathy, founded by Gary Vaynerchuk, Jon Troutman, and Nate Scherotter, started in 2018 and has sold over 15,000 cases to date. The quick acquisition was covered in this article from Forbes. The guys taste three wines from Empath – white, red, and rose – while talking about the winery, DTC in general, and the acquisition. They also talk about how marketing plays a big role in wines like Empathy. Given the marketing genius of Gary V, this is no surprise. Finally, it is important to remember that Pete and Mike are raw and unfiltered. They may or may not like wines or have strong opinions on people. They invite discussion and hope to inspire you to take a critical look at what you are putting in your glass. As a reminder, Pete and Mike do not accept advertising dollars from wineries or wine wholesalers. They purchase the bottles they taste on the show. These are not paid endorsements. Episode Notes Episode 23 – Where Do I Start? Online Shopping Tips with David Dushkin Friend of the show, David Dushkin, reached out to Pete saying, “You and VinoMike should do a top 12 beginner wines to buy. Make a case for like $150.” Pete’s response, “I have an idea.” So, today, Pete and VinoMike talk to Dave about how to navigate buying a beginner case online. They use one of Dave’s local shops – Petite Cellars – to walk him through how they would do it. This may seem simple, but there is a lot to it and there is something for everyone in this episode. Before they get started down that path, they crack open a bottle of Cellier des Dauphins Côtes du Rhône Prestige Blanc from Trader Joe’s. This simple, yet delicious, wine is a bargain and well worth a try. The episode wraps up with a little running talk as all three of the guys on this episode are runners. Running and wine – a perfect pairing! As a reminder, Pete and Mike do not accept advertising dollars from wineries or wine wholesalers. They purchase the bottles they taste on the show. How does the 100 point scale make wine scores easier for you to interpret? How can you drink better wines by finding a wine critic whose style you like? How does grade inflation affect you as a wine lover? Why is taking an online wine course often better than an in-person course? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm sharing a conversation I originally had with Pete & Vino Mike on their podcast, That Wine Pod. Highlights What’s my take on the best wine? Why should you look at organic and biodynamic wines on a spectrum? How does the 100 point scale make wine scores easier for you to interpret? Do wine scores on the 100 point scale correlate with typical school grading scales? Why did I wait until 5 years into my wine writing career to start scoring wine? How can you benefit from finding a wine critic whose style you like? How do I choose which wines to rate? Why has wine scoring become the norm? How does grade inflation affect you as a wine lover? Do you need to pay attention to wine critics? What impact has social media had on your access to wine writers? How do you learn about wine in my online course? What benefits do you get from an online wine course over an in-person course? Which interesting wine and cheese pairings will you learn about in my upcoming course? What do I wish I could change about the wine world? When should you follow your wine with eggs? About Pete and Vino Mike Pete has been in the wine industry for over 15 years as a wine retail store manager, owner, and strategic consultant in the thriving Chicago food and beverage industry. Episode NotesNo Fear Friday #5 – Weight, Health & FearThere will be full episodes on this subject down the road, but I wanted to talk a little about it now. On the FatMan Chronicles podcast, my wife, Gretchen, and I tackle the subjects of weight loss and health. For many years, I believed that weight directly equated to health. My fear was that if I didn't find a way to lose weight, I would be unhealthy. That fear held me back from doing things to live an active and healthy lifestyle. If I was fat, what was the use? My bloodwork and overall health would be terrible anyway, so why try?But we are all individuals, or as I like to say, n=1. What is the ideal weight anyway?I can only speak for myself in terms of the fears around weight. I cover these personal fears and try to get to a place where we work together to conquer them As always, remember… The way forward is together. Episode Notes Be Better Today (Season 2, Episode 1) – We’re Back! I thought I was done with this podcast. I have a few others – The No Fear Project, That Wine Pod, FatMan Chronicles – that keep me plenty busy. But I couldn’t get Be Better Today out of my mind. When I decided to take this project back up, it reminded me of this quote from Billy Crystal: "What's so fascinating and frustrating and great about life is that you're constantly starting over, all the time, and I love that." A discussion with Pete D'Amico of Fatman Chronicles and the new "No Fear Project" about the subconscious mind and how we tend to undermine our efforts by assigning roles to ourselves. The belief in who we are, what we are capable of, what we can and cannot do, can be a strong motivator and predictor in who and what we become. If you have parents who constantly hounded you about being worthless, no good, “bound for prison”, often results in an adult who actually turns out the exact way that was “predicted”. Been told you were somehow “less than” your whole life results in that belief within you, no matter how well you try to hide it. The inner voice, the voice of your father, mother, teachers, spiritual leader, is in your head and will remain there. The conversation revolves around my use of the title “Fat Slow Triathlete” and Pete's "Fatman Chronicles" and how, subconsciously, we might regress in order to meet those role expectations. A special bonus episode this week from Pete & Gretchen! Episode 65 opens with a SPOILER ALERT of the Masked Singer in Gretchen’s #viewsfromthecouch. Then Pete makes a special announcement about a FatMan Chronicles 120-Day Weight Loss Challenge. Details coming soon but it starts on March 12th, so be ready! Then the couple interviews Gretchen’s co-worker – Lou Pagotto. Lou sent us a bio and it is outstanding, so we share it here in its entirety: “I am a product of a small town in Ontario born to immigrant Italian parents. Didn’t distinguish myself athletically while growing up as I was undersized. Played all sports in high school but did not play hockey and that made me an outlier. Life in a small Ontario town revolves around the success of its hockey team. Played intermural athletics in college and during that period I started running short distances as I needed activity to keep some level of fitness between beer drinking. Post college I dabbled at the 5K to 10K distance but did not go beyond until age 39 when I tried a half marathon. In the intervening 17 years I had gotten married, fathered and helped parent 3 kids and was chasing a career. I did a couple more half marathons before 2001 at which point it was time to fully commit to a marathon as the window was closing. The marathon era lasted 6 years until late 2007 but recovery from chronic injuries were taking a mental toll. Due to high mileage I had several ‘over use’ issues and had become susceptible to calcium buildup in my heels and shoulders. Consciously I wound down the running in 2008 and took up road cycling as a substitute cardio activity. The cycling continues to this day, and at least once a year, friends get together for a destination ride. We train indoors in the winter, then get on the road in mid April to build up endurance for the getaway week in the summer/fall. We’ve ridden in Texas, California, New York state, Iowa, France, Spain, and of course Canada. This fall we plan to conquer the Dolomites in Italy. Over the past few years, I have experienced the loss of muscle mass that accompanies aging. With running or cycling, I had convinced myself that to get better, one had to do more mileage. It was all about improving the endurance dimension of performance. During the 18 years of running/cycling, with little cross training, my balance, flexibility, power and speed were all receding. There was nothing special about my diet either. With the concentration on cardio, I ate anything I wanted and was stuck at 184 lbs, albeit the mix had been tending to less muscle and more fat. All my reading indicated that as you age, and once the cumulative loss of muscle mass hits a critical point, its difficult to get it back. With less muscle, your body becomes unstable and in turn you are more inclined to experience falls or unknowingly overload your joints even with normal day to day activity (why can’t I lift that luggage into the overhead compartment). These minor inconveniences accelerate the decline in your overall mobility. It was time for me to do a reset. In June 2018 I embarked on a Keto diet program in concert with intermittent fasting (18/6). My hope with Keto/IF was to improve digestion, sleep, sharpen focus and alter body composition. As a by product maybe lose weight. In September I cut down cardio workouts from 5 days a week to 2 and added 4 days of body weight routines. Before the daily routine I start with 40 minutes of prep involving glute activation, hip/ankle mobility exercises, stretching and dynamic movement, all aimed at improving balance, flexibility and stability. In March, I will tweak the exercise routine again to focus more on leg strength/stability and less on chest/arms/back What’s important to me now is not PB’s from a run or ride but rather longevity. How does my exercise routine and diet put me in a better position to have a great quality of life when I’m over 80. Its been said that people born today may be the first generation who can expect to live to 100. My desire is having the ability to get on the ground to play with my great grandchildren in my mid 80s without worrying about the consequences of falling or getting back up.” Now, get out there and #bebettertoday! A lot coming at you in this show. John starts off with his usual deep dive into his psyche, which is fun for all I am sure, but then Rob comes back for two portions. He gives us a rundown of where he is right now and what he has been up to, then he is joined by good friend of the show Pete D'Amico from the Fatman Chronicles podcast to talk about Pete's training for his FIRST marathon (that Rob will be doing with him). As usual, please join us on the Facebook page, Twitter, and Instagram (search for @teamE4E) and make sure to check out Pete and his wife Gretchen over at Fatman Chronicles (on podbean as well).
Weeeeee'reeeeeeee Baaaack John is joined with Rob and Pete for a dual teamE4E and Fatman Chronicles Episode talking about the recent forays into trail and ultra racing by Pete and Rob, with the common denominator in both being Karen Clarke. Discussion about the races themselves, the culture, how we choose these distances, and what is the driver that moves us toward them.
It’s episode 52 of the FatMan Chronicles and Pete and Gretchen are back in their normal form. Like it or not, here they are! They start out with a very brief #viewsfromthecouch since Gretchen was out of town. Then we get to hear about her plan from Coach Andy. Spoiler Alert – She’s still not keen on running. And that becomes a discussion in itself based on another podcast. It’s interesting to dive into Gretchen’s psyche. There is some discussion of the feedback Gretchen got on her work trip with her way of eating. It dovetailed into the feedback received after episode 51. They both want to thank everyone for their incredible support! When it is Pete’s turn, we learn how he’s rebounded over the last week and how the training is going. He’s ready to run that race next week in Pittsburgh! Finally, Pete announces his future plans. You’ll want to hear what’s in store next! Now, get out there and #bebettertoday! It’s an epic episode 50 of the FatMan Chronicles! Be warned, this one is all about how real life happens – including Gretchen’s first race report, Jen and Boone as our first in-studio guests, and a crying toddler! We kick it off with getting to know a little about our friends Jen and Boone, and how they have fared after converting to the NSNG way of life earlier this year. Then, I scare Michaela, so it is our first taste of a crying toddler on air! Don’t worry, she throws a little cuteness in later. The bulk of the episode is about the 5K. Gretchen gives her first race report! How did she do? And is her running career over? We get to hear from Boone and his first attempt to run a 5K too. Finally, Pete fills us in on his sub-30 attempt. There is some seriousness, some laughs, and a whole lot of craziness. FMC episode 50. Wow! We can’t believe it and we thank you so very much! Now, get out there and #bebettertoday! After a couple of weeks off, Pete & Gretchen return with Episode 30, which brings a new era to the FatMan Chronicles with no opening quote or music. How long will it take Pete to figure out how to edit this stuff in? Well, the over/under is 6 months. In Views from the Couch, Gretchen updates everyone on the happenings of reality TV. And she even ties in the Real Housewives to the New York Marathon! Pete recaps his trip to Spain and the challenges he faced along the way. We get an update on his training and even a public declaration of his goals for the upcoming half-marathon. The talk then turns to Boston. This year’s marathon saw two unlikely champs and the lessons learned were invaluable. Also, Gretchen doesn’t understand what makes the Boston Marathon great, so there is a lot of discussion around this riveting topic. Episode 29 of the FatMan Chronicles features an interview with Peter Bilarczyk, owner of thefatadaptedathlete.com and alldietsfail.com. Pete and Gretchen dive right in with Peter and forego Views from the Couch (gasp!) and any training updates. There are a few updates from Pete thrown in during the interview, but they will be back in episode 30 to give you all the insights from their lives you’ve come to expect. The interview with Peter gets deep into a way of eating that he calls an adapted keto lifestyle, including a focus on balance while eliminating grains and added sugar. His story is compelling, having lost a lot of weight himself and teaching himself the science behind what works. Peter believes this approach can help everyone and has opened a coaching service to help people on their weight loss journey. Be ready for some science in this one. Pete tries to jump in to help define a few things. But, never fear, Pete and Gretchen’s trademark humor is well represented throughout! A shorter show tonight but filled with things that will surely set you on edge and make you talk. John gives a short race report on his 10K over the weekend and why he feels the personal bests are coming with each event, but he also admits to not eating prior to racing. So there's that, too. Both John and Rob listen to the Fatman Chronicles podcast with Pete and Gretchen and they discuss something Pete brought up in a recent episode about a diminished feeling while training at times. Our guys have an opinion on that also. And while you're at it, check out their show also. No water while you eat? If Tom "the second coming" Brady believes in it then it must be true, right?
Pete & Gretchen are dedicated to their dozens of fans. So dedicated that they brought the recorder with on vacation and did an episode while lounging in the AZ desert! Episode 20 is a recap of their vacation, especially their eating extravaganza. Also, Gretchen gets in a workout? In a special way, yes! Also, they pay tribute to Pete’s favorite podcast over the last decade – Two Gomers Run For Their Lives. Anthony and Steven have provided Pete so many hours of entertainment over the years and, as it turns out, the Gomers are listening to FatMan Chronicles! After a two-week hiatus, Pete and Gretchen are back! The theme of this episode, not surprisingly, is… tangents. Including an odd Thanksgiving story involving a parade of turkeys and R. Kelly. The couple catches up on the last two weeks, especially what happened over Thanksgiving. They go over what they did right and “wrong” and promise some recipes. NSNG/Banting/Keto was part of the celebration. To see what they come up with, like them on facebook.com/fatmanstories or follow them on Instagram or Twitter (@fatmanstories)! They also talk about getting their first Patron donation. Thank you, Linda! Pete is really excited to get to make some swag soon. Join the party and become a Patron or wait for the FatMan Chronicles online store. What?!?! Shhhh, Gretchen doesn’t know. The rest is about catching up and a preview of episode 13 which is all about goals. What will Gretchen come up with? Will it involve the couch? Tune in next week!
