Dr Daniel Crosby is a Psychologist, he has a PhD in psychology and behavioural finance specialising in helping people and organisations understand the cross over between the mind and the financial markets. He is a co-author of a New York Times best seller “https://www.amazon.com.au/Personal-Benchmark-Website-Integrating-Behavioral/dp/1118963326/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1532524547&sr=1-1&keywords=personal+benchmark (Personal Benchmark)” and also authored the “https://www.amazon.com.au/Laws-Wealth-Daniel-Crosby/dp/0857195247/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1532524388&sr=1-1&keywords=laws+of+wealth (Laws of Wealth)“. Daniel is the founder and CEO of Nocturne Capital – an investment management firm whose approach is rooted in the science of behavioral finance. Daniel has a growing family, based in Atlanta Georgia from where he runs his business which he has been running full time for the last 10 years. Check out the full show with detailed show notes and episode links: https://www.businessgenerals.com/danielc (businessgenerals.com/danielc) Lets talk core revenue streams Daniel shares how he started off doing speaking engagement to market his other services in his company but it has since taken off and become a major part of his revenue stream. An early take away from Daniel is not to underestimate the power of speaking as an extra revenue stream in your business! Daniel also manages money on behalf of clients, teaches online courses in behavioural finance and provides consulting services and content development. While speaking is Daniel's number one income stream it's not completely scalable due to the time commitment and extensive travel requirements so Daniel has a focus to grow the other income streams. Daniel has been on the speaking circuit for the last 10 years, and cautions that it is taxing for someone with a young family. Childhood inspiration Growing up Daniel was inspired by his dad who is an investment manager, after getting into college Daniel loved the study of psychology, helping and teaching people – but part way through his PhD he felt emotionally burned out as a clinical psychologist. A conversation with his dad about his next options turned him down the road of understanding the intersection between psychology and stock market investing. Why a PhD and not just a Degree Daniel says in his experience a psychology degree in the US, does not get you very far in your career as a psychologist. The PhD paid off for Daniel as clients more readily hired his consulting services as a PhD graduate even though he was only 28. While the PhD opened doors for Daniel he says he doesn't actually use it in its direct form because he is trained to conduct therapy sessions as a clinical psychologist but he now picks stocks for a living. The skills learned however, of being non defensive, hard work, accepting feedback, critiquing and taking action – are life skills he has taken from his PhD that have helped him in his business. First paying client and a speaking career Daniel managed to secure his first client before he resigned from his job, he recommends that you find a way to get at least one good client account before stepping out on your own. He quickly moved into the world of speaking and in the beginning all his presentations were at no charge, he would look for places to speak at in his city as a way of marketing his consultancy services. After quiet a number of free events Daniel recalls an attendee asking if they could book him for a paid speaking engagement and he began a new journey where he would eventually be charging between $1,000 and $2,000 to speak. A mistake he shares is saying yes to all speaking requests and having to create a special bespoke keynote each time he got an invitation, this would wear Daniel out and he looked for a different solution. When the market moves as fast and Donald Trump tweets, how should we think about money in the digital age? Jennifer talks with psychologist and behavioral finance expert Dr. Daniel Crosby about his life story and how he has built a career helping both individual investors and institutional clients understand themselves and the psychology of the market. For Daniel Crosby, the beginning of the story started with an ending. Daniel tells Jennifer the story of how he came into the world on the day of his grandfather’s passing and how that has driven him to live his life to its fullest potential. An important part of leading a rich and full life is to always be learning. Daniel talks about how his love for learning and how his academic education laid the groundwork for developing his interpersonal skills which were key to his success later in life. As the son of an investment manager and advisor, the stability and comfort of his father’s profession was an alluring one. But after serving a mission through his church in the Philippines and helping a close friend whether an eating disorder, Daniel shifted his academic path towards helping people. How do some people with so little manage to find joy in their lives? Jennifer gets Daniel to flex his clinical psychology skills and asks him why some people blessed with great privileges can’t seem to find the same happiness of some people living a simpler or rougher life. He also talks about his own success and his approach to being happy. What drove Daniel to fly straight into graduate school? Jennifer asks Daniel a bit more about his trajectory towards becoming an impactful force in people’s lives. He talks about the value of therapy and why building a strong relationship between therapist and client beats out any high-level degree or specialized school of thought. Misconceptions about therapy and the therapeutic process are a dime a dozen. Daniel does some mythbusting and distills some of what he’s learned as a therapist into some takeaways for listeners that they can use in their personal and professional lives. Whether it’s for work, in our relationships or just in our day-to-day lives, we all talk about ourselves. Jennifer and Daniel talk about why being able to talk about yourself and your feelings openly and authentically with a trusted professional is so important is our society. After being burnt out by individual therapy work, Daniel moved on to workplace-focused psychology work in Atlanta. While doing pre-employment assessments across the Deep South, he learned some hard truths about competence, wealth, meritocracy and the under-recognized value of general intelligence. You’re not that great. Daniel fills us in on one of the key moments of his journey to becoming an impact-maker: a 2011 TEDx talk in Huntsville, Alabama about 7 counter-intuitive truths for living a better and more meaningful life. This talk eventually turned into a self-published book of the same name (check out the links below). “Only as we accept our normality, are we able to build something that is better than normal.” Daniel talks about the central message of his book, the concept of overconfidence bias and how it keeps us back from achieving our fullest potential. In late 2009 – in the swell of the recession – Daniel set out on his own to get away from his rough day job. His new behaviorist economics consultancy called Nocturne Capital offers a wealth of services around the psychology of investment decision making. Jennifer asks the question on all of our minds: so how should we think about money? Daniel offers some of the insights he’s gathered over the years helping people understand and navigate financial markets. Daniel shares a couple tidbits with Jennifer but you can find all 10 of his investing commandments in his book The Laws of Wealth, named the best investment book of 2017. If you’ve been listening to this week’s episode so far, you’ll know that Dr. Crosby is a man of quick wit. Jennifer asks Daniel where he gets his funny bone from and how it finds its way into his work. Validation and criticism some in equal spades in today’s digital word. Jennifer asks Daniel for some advice for everyone about how to engage with the digital dimensions of our fast-paced contemporary world, as well as where you can find Daniel online. Welcome to the 39th CONKERS’ CORNER recorded on 14th December 2016. In this interview I have the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Daniel Crosby @danielcrosby, the New York Times awarding winning author, behavioural finance expert and sought after thought leader on market psychology. He is also the founder of Nocturne Capital. Dr. Crosby created the sentiment and valuation measures that serve as the overlay for Nocturne’s tactical strategy. His ideas have appeared in the Huffington Post, Think Advisor and Risk Management, as well as columns for WealthManagement.com and Investment News. Daniel was named one of Investment News “40 Under 40” and a “financial blogger you should be reading” by AARP. Daniel’s second book, “Personal Benchmark”, co-authored with Charles Widger of Brinker Capital, was a New York Times bestseller that outlines a highly personalised approach to investing that aligns intention with action while fostering an investment experience that is both enjoyable and rational. Daniel grew up the son of a Financial Adviser and he was so immersed in that world he said that he “never had a chance”. He was steeped in best financial practices and his father would always be “talking about stocks and shares at the table”. His Dad was quite a gifted investor and adviser and therefore “in their house, debt was a four letter word”. Therefore, Daniel grew up with some sound principles with regards to money. Daniel went to College and set out to become an Investment Manager, however mid-way through College he dropped out. He chose instead to become a missionary for his Church and went to work in the Philippines for a few years. Teaching English, building schools, doing a little good in the world. It was at that point he became interested in a profession that would help others. He chose Psychology when he returned to his studies at Brigham Young University, with a renewed dedication and later became a Pre Doctoral Intern (PHD) at Emory University in Atlanta. In July 2008, he went onto become a Consultant at Sperduto and Associates, a firm of corporate psychologists and management consultants, based in Atlanta. When he started his first job, Daniel started investing straight away with Index Funds. He remained there until he moved in January 2010 to IncBlot Organizational Psychology which is a management consultancy, comprised of a team of organisational psychologists with expertise in helping business select exceptional people. In March 2016, Daniel founded Nocturne Capital, which is a behavioural asset management firm serving the needs of individuals and institutions committed to the research-based investment principles set forth in his book :The Laws of Wealth. Daniel is also the President of Nocturne Capital and an executive at the Brinker Capital Center for Outcomes, a financial adviser education initiative that helps advisors understand the powerful impact behavioural science can have on their practices. Daniel is a huge advocate of “know yourself” and one of his biggest lessons is ‘the boom of learning to embrace momentum’. However on a personal basis, he does not look at his own portfolio too often, choosing instead to be a rule-based investor. Daniel opens his award winning* book The Laws of Wealth: Psychology and the Secret to Investing Success, with “The investor’s chief problem, and even his worst enemy, is likely to be himself.” – Benjamin Graham. Daniel advocates that individuals should should seek Financial Advice because research confirms that individuals that do well over the long-term will attain better returns in the long-term. Listen now to gain insights into how Dr Daniel Crosby presents a route map for navigating the complex nature of behavioural psychology, behavioural finance and the laws/strategies of achieving long-term wealth. During a time when many investors are making poor decisions and trading rather than investing. Learn from the lessons in his successful, insightful global investing journey.

Listen Money Matters - Free your inner financial badass. All the stuff you should know about personal finance.

Emotions impact every financial decision we face and sometimes it causes us to make choices out of fear or greed.  Today on the show the guys talk to Dr. Daniel Crosby, a psychologist, behavioral finance expert and asset manager.  He is the co-author of the New York Times bestseller Personal Benchmark: Integrating Behavioral Finance and Founder of Nocturne Capital. In Daniels’ latest book, The Laws of Wealth, he talks about principles for managing your behavior and how emotion and psychology influence our financial decisions. What is behavioral finance? The concept of behavioral finance is a fairly new idea that looks at behavioral, psychological theory together with economic explanations for why people make irrational financial decisions. Why do so many smart people making the wrong choices with their money? Daniel wants to find out what causes some people to behave illogically when it comes to finance and how to build investment portfolios based on unvalued investments created by investor’s emotional behavior. Daniel works as a sort of a financial therapist and asset manager centering his work on helping his clients stay away from making irrational emotion-driven mistakes. Investors can often be their own worst enemy and are to blame for poor investment returns. Volatility in the market can cause investors to act unpredictably at times – not in their best interest. You control what matters most You can’t control the stock market but what you can control is human behavior. Over the last 30 years, the market has returned about 11% a year while the average investor has only held about 4% because of emotional decision making when markets are going up and down. “Be Fearful When Others Are Greedy and Greedy When Others Are Fearful” – Warren Buffett Investing needs discipline and rationality. Being in control of that takes planning and executing. Take your power back and gain control of your situation no matter is going on in the markets. Set up systems for yourself and follow simple rules of thumb so you mitigate potential harm to your financial lives. Daniel believes you cannot do it alone. People who work a financial professional tend to do 3% better than people who don’t. Advisors don’t have all the answers, but they can help you not to make emotionally driven mistakes. Do you want to be average? Two of the well-known investment styles are growth investing and value investing. Growth investing is investing in stocks that have shown higher than average growth over the previous years, compared to the market average, and show promise to continually grow into the future. They are riskier than average stocks but have the possibility to multiply in value. The other is value investing strategy. Value investors like Daniel actively seek stocks they believe the market has undervalued. He believes many of these stocks get overlooked due to human behavior and fear. He finds pockets of disproportionate value which are created by human behavior. The strategy has been used by Warren Buffet for many years. Daniel takes a quantitative approach to choosing his investments basing his choices on the The 5 P’s – Price (valuation), properties (quality), pitfalls (risks), people (what are the insiders doing), push (momentum/potential growth). Risk is not a squiggly line Risk is different for everyone when it comes to investing, and that’s why Daniel believes in personal benchmarking. He helps his clients create a personalized definition of risk and using their top motivations to make better decis... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
