Welcome to episode #965 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Tom Asacker has been challenging my thinking for years, ever since we first connected in the mid-2000s when his book, A Clear Eye For Branding, offered a fresh perspective on marketing and branding. Over the years, Tom has continued to push boundaries, diving into the intersection of belief, behavior, and what truly drives us. His latest book, Unwinding Want - Using Your Mind To Escape Your Thoughts, is a natural progression of his work, building on the insights he explored in earlier books like The Business Of Belief, Sandbox Wisdom, I Am Keats, and Your Brain On Story. In this conversation, Tom and I delved deep into the paradox of desire - how what we think we want often reflects our conditioning rather than our true selves. We discussed how marketers manipulate emotions, the societal constructs that shape our decisions, and the role of personal agency in breaking free from unconscious patterns. Tom shares profound insights about the human experience, such as how recognizing our conditioning can help us make more authentic choices and how the pursuit of comfort can sometimes rob us of meaningful experiences. He also touched on how AI mimics the human mind's patterns, creating an eerie reflection of our own thought loops. What I've always appreciated about Tom is his ability to merge intellectual rigor with practical wisdom, challenging us to reexamine not just what we want but why we want it. If you've ever found yourself questioning whether the life you're living is truly your own, this episode - and Tom's work - might just give you the tools to find out. This is a great discussion to kick off 2025 (Happy New Year!). Enjoy the conversation! Running time: 1:12:22. Hello from beautiful Montreal. Listen and subscribe over at Apple Podcasts. Chapter 1:Summary of Surrounded by Idiots"Surrounded by Idiots," authored by Thomas Erikson, presents a model for understanding human behavior based on personality types. The book categorizes people into four primary types, represented by colors: Red, Yellow, Green, and Blue. Each color corresponds to specific traits and communication styles:1. Red (Dominant) - Often seen as assertive and competitive, Reds want to take control and may come off as aggressive. They are goal-oriented and can be decisive but might struggle with collaboration and patience.2. Yellow (Influential) - Yellows are sociable, enthusiastic, and persuasive. They thrive on interaction and motivation but can be disorganized and inattentive to detail. Their positivity can sometimes mask their inability to handle criticism.3. Green (Stable) - Greens are calm, caring, and team-oriented. They value harmony and are excellent listeners, but they may avoid conflict and resist change. Their preference for stability can sometimes lead to indecisiveness.4. Blue (Conscientious) - Blues are detail-oriented, analytical, and systematic. They appreciate structure and reliability but can appear rigid or overly critical. Their focus on accuracy can make it hard for them to adapt quickly.Erikson emphasizes that understanding these personality types can improve communication, teamwork, and relationships, whether in the workplace or personal life. The book provides insights into how to recognize these traits in others and adapt one's approach to foster better interactions.Overall, "Surrounded by Idiots" serves as a guide to navigating social dynamics by leveraging an understanding of different personality styles, ultimately aiming to reduce frustration and increase effective communication.Chapter 2:The Theme of Surrounded by Idiots"Surrounded by Idiots" by Thomas Erikson is a popular book that explores human behavior and communication through the lens of personality types. Self-Reflection and Growth:- Readers are encouraged to reflect on their own personality types and those of others. This understanding can lead to better communication, improved relationships, and more effective teamwork.4. Adaptation and Flexibility:- The book underscores the importance of being able to adapt one's communication style to meet the needs of different personality types, promoting empathy and collaboration. A Description of episode 132 of Outside The Studio with Tessa: This month on Outside the Studio, we welcome David Benedicktus RN/BSN (retired). David has a 40-year career as a mental health professional working in a variety of mental health settings and focusing on system integration, and patient education projects. In retirement he became a founding member of Complementary Medicine Practitioners of PNW. He organized wellness health promotion talks for the City of Vancouver WA, the local library system and patient support groups. He also became an instructor at Clark College in Vancouver, Washington, for ten years lecturing on the neuroscience of trauma and the relationship between trauma and adaptive lifestyle choices which can lead to chronic disease and addictions. He teaches courses on the Neuroscience of Healing and Resiliency, Preventing Cognitive Decline as You Age, Cannabis and Your Health and Psychedelic Assisted Therapy. Leaning on David's life experience and subject matter expertise, today's conversation explores the theme of inequality and the divide between the haves and the have-nots. It begins with Tessa sharing her childhood realization of the difference between those who have safety and those who are in danger due to war, poverty, and mental health issues. Her father, David Benedicktus, discusses his involvement in the civil rights movement and his work with marginalized communities, particularly the homeless. They discuss the importance of empathy and taking action to address social issues. The conversation also touches on the impact of poverty, and the role of neuroscience in understanding human behavior. Key Takeaways:1.The divide between the haves and the have-nots is a significant issue that affects society. Empathy and understanding are crucial in addressing social issues and helping marginalized communities.2. Poverty and homelessness are complex problems that require structural support and resources. Neuroscience can help us understand the factors that contribute to human behavior and the need for compassion. Cultivating compassion and empathy is essential for addressing the challenges faced by marginalized communities.3. Much of the field of economics derives its theories from a subset of Adam Smith's philosophy found in the Wealth of Nations. But are economists overlooking other parts of Adam Smith's teachings that could explain more about human behavior and economics? Nobel-prize winning economist Vernon L. Smith is an emeritus professor of economics and law at Chapman University. His books like Rationality in Economics: Constructivist and Ecological Forms and Humanomics: Moral Sentiments and the Wealth of Nations for the Twenty-First Century explore how human behavior shapes economics.Vernon and Greg discuss the role Adam Smith's Theory of Moral Sentiments plays in understanding behavioral economics, Vernon's early supply and demand experiments, and how his work shaped the field of experimental economics. *unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.*Show Links:Recommended Resources:Adam Smith StoicismAlfred MarshallEdward ChamberlinMilton FriedmanKevin A McCabeCharles HoltBetsy HoffmanGuest Profile:Faculty Profile at Chapman UniversityNobel Prize Winner BioHis Work:Economics of Markets: Neoclassical Theory, Experiments, and Theory of Classical Price DiscoveryRationality in Economics: Constructivist and Ecological FormsHumanomics: Moral Sentiments and the Wealth of Nations for the Twenty-First Century A Life of Experimental Economics, Volume I: Forty Years of DiscoveryA Life of Experimental Economics, Volume II: The Next Fifty YearsEpisode Quotes:Do humans learn economics through experience, not theory?39:09: People don't get the economics right by thinking about it. They get it right by actually participating in markets and getting a feel for what's going on. And I argue that humans are very good, once they do that. Sure, they can be fooled. And they do a lot of crazy things in a new market before they've acquired experience, but they adapt very well. And so, that equilibrium concepts are relevant. But the behavior is very much experience-oriented. And so, they get there through experiential learning. You see more than just abstract analysis and thinking about it.Perspective is at the foundation of the theorem of moral sentiments12:29: [The relationship] Perspective is at the foundation of the Theory of Moral Sentiments. That's what he's [Adam Smith] talking about—sentiments. An important part of it is fellow feeling.Gratitude influences sacrifice and motivates cooperation48:16: Gratitude creates indebtedness. And so people may have self-interested motivations, but they also have this motivation to get along with others. And so this proposition predicts, in the trust game, that people are sacrificing; they're taking less reward in order to do what they believe is right, to treat this person. Why is Vernon championing Adam Smith's principles in the modern way of thinking about economics?56:45: So that's why I'm a champion of trying to get that pattern of thinking and Adam Smith's principles into the modern way of thinking in economics. Economics and psychology, and in economics, because the Theorem of Sentiments was a contribution to social psychology that just never took hold. It was another hundred years, you see, before psychology started to do anything. And it was the beginning of the 20th century before psychology became very prominent. And then it was individual psychology, not social psychology. I think Adam Smith would find that strange.

The Brainy Business | Understanding the Psychology of Why People Buy | Behavioral Economics
In episode 325 of The Brainy Business podcast, host Melina Palmer interviews Christian Madsbjerg, author of the book Look and an expert in human observation. Madsbjerg discusses the importance of observation in understanding human behavior and helping organizations make better decisions. He emphasizes that many companies make big mistakes by not asking the right questions and relying too heavily on data abstractions and groupthink. According to Madsbjerg, companies need to constantly study the questions that are most meaningful in their industry in order to stay relevant and successful. Christian highlights the necessity of observing and describing social phenomena before forming opinions and challenges individuals and companies to question their assumptions. Madsbjerg introduces the concept of hyper-reflection, which involves analyzing how people pay attention, to gain deeper insights into human behavior. The conversation provides valuable insights into the power of observation and description in understanding the world around us and making more informed decisions. In this episode: Recognize the critical importance of keen observation in comprehending complex human behavior. Learn about the pitfalls and misleading aspects of treating the human brain like a digital interface. Delve into the influence and impact of societal constructs on human behavior. Harness the capacity of hyper-reflection to delve deeper into your own thoughts and perceptions. Appreciate the added value of integrating observational techniques into scientific enquiry. Show Notes: 00:00:00 - Introduction to Christian Madsbjerg and his Background Melina introduces Christian Madsbjerg, the author of the book Look, and discusses his background in utilizing observation techniques to help organizations better understand human behavior. 00:02:45 - The Importance of Asking the Right Questions Asking the right questions makes a huge difference for companies. They discuss the dangers of jumping into problem-solving mode without fully understanding the problem. Christian explains how companies that fail to constantly study meaningful questions often struggle to adapt and remain successful in their industries. 00:07:49 - The Class on Human Observation Christian shares his experience creating and teaching a class on human observation at the New School in Manhattan. The class focused on using observation techniques inspired by philosophy and anthropology to study social phenomena. He explains that the book is a reflection of that class, allowing more people to learn about observation. 00:11:50 - The Journey of Observation and Curiosity Christian discusses his natural inclination towards observation and curiosity. He reflects on how studying philosophy and different historical perspectives helped him develop a deeper understanding of the assumptions we make about the world. He emphasizes the importance of observing without preconceived opinions and describes observation as a technique for scrutinizing our own assumptions. 00:14:49 - Perception and Intuition Christian challenges the misconception that humans perceive the world as atomistic data. He explains that humans perceive things holistically, seeing things as part of a larger social context rather than as individual data points. He highlights the importance of understanding the relationship 00:18:17 - The Danger of Comparing Computers to Human Brains, Comparing computers to human brains can lead to a misunderstanding of what it means to be human. Humans are not just intellectual beings; much of our experience and understanding comes from our bodies and the spaces we inhabit. 00:19:55 - The Problem with Having Strong Opinions, Having strong opinions about everything can create a filter between us and the world. It prevents us from seeing things objectively and directly, as we interpret everything through a political or opinionated lens. 00:21:54 - The Importance of Describing Social Phenomena, In order to better understand the world and the work we do, we need to study and describe the social phenomena at the center of our work. By understanding the context and dynamics of a situation, we can provide better advice and make more informed decisions. 00:25:30 - Case Study: Observing Fundraising Strategies, By observing people in the streets trying to raise funds for the white rhinos, a student learned valuable lessons about effective fundraising. He discovered that gentle and subtle approaches were much more successful than aggressive or shaming tactics. 00:30:44 - The Power of Hyper Reflection, Hyper-reflection is a type of attention that allows us to observe how others pay attention. By practicing hyper-reflection, we can better understand the dynamics and behaviors of people and organizations, leading to innovation and positive change. 00:35:36 - The Importance of Observation and Description, Christian discusses the importance of observing and describing social phenomena in order to gain insight and break down biases and prejudices. He emphasizes the value of feeling connected to the world and having a direct relationship with it. 00:37:35 - Building Trust and Observing Humans, Melina mentions how this work reminds her of an Apple Fitness' “Time To Walk” episode with Jane Goodall she recently listened to. Christian draws a parallel between Jane Goodall's observations of chimpanzees and his own observations of humans. He highlights the need to build trust with people in order to accurately describe and understand group dynamics and assumptions. 00:40:11 - Different Perspectives on the Same Phenomena, Christian recognizes that he and Melina approach the same phenomena from different angles, with behavioral science and cognitive science on one side and philosophical perspectives on the other. They agree on the importance of diverse methods and techniques in gaining insight. 00:42:33 - Observation in Science, Christian and Melina discuss the role of observation in scientific breakthroughs and paradigm shifts. They agree that observation is at the heart of good science and that scientists should incorporate more observation into their work. 00:44:50 - Conclusion, Melina's top insights from the conversation. I've had the best job in the world for over 10 years now - where I have the privilege of speaking on stages and in training rooms to groups of leaders around the world about how to increase their influence, focus strategically, and make a positive impact at work and in life. When I stepped out on my own in 2010 to start my business, I had a little bit of experience, a healthy dose of confidence, and a whole lot of hope that I could build the relationships, and create impactful presentations that would result in a successful speaking business. But like a lot of things in my life where I tend to jump off the cliff first, and then think about my parachute later, I wasn't fully prepared for what it would take to find my lane, to determine how to set my speaking fees, or how to become a recognized expert. So, queue admission into the school of hard knocks, where I've gained quite an education along the way, and as a result, have ultimately managed to build a business and life that I truly love. Last year, my friend Dr. Daniel Crosby - who is a great public speaker himself, and was a also my guest on episode 14 of the Impact Makers Podcast, where he talked about understanding human behavior to do well, do good and do you - asked if I would join him on his Standard Deviations podcast to talk about what it takes to create great presentations -- and if you're into that kind of thing, how to actually get paid to speak, which is one of the most frequently asked questions we both receive. Over a year later, the content of our conversation is still accurate and timely, and I continue to hear from people in Dr. Crosby's audience who have found it helpful. So I asked him if I could share it with you today, and if you're interested in crafting great presentations, and/or getting paid to speak, I think you'll find it helpful. Topics Discussed In This Episode: My path from HR executive to professional speaker, and why I felt like I needed at least 20 years of work experience before starting. How giving away 10% of my time to help others helped me to get started as a speaker, and discover the work that I truly loved. My personal recipe for crafting a great presentation. What comedians and preachers can teach us about giving great presentations. What adult learning theory tells us about what makes for a good speech. Strategies for determining your speaking fee, what can happen if your price is too low, and how to get paid more. Three books that I recommend for speakers to help with picking a lane, determining your pricing strategy, and building a memorable brand. What Dr. Crosby did that 10x'd his speaking revenue. 3 concrete steps to take to build a profitable speaking business. Smart Agency Masterclass with Jason Swenk: Podcast for Digital Marketing Agencies
Did you know that applying behavioral science to your agency's work will result in better outcomes for your clients? By utilizing research-backed methodologies, you'll gain a competitive advantage. With extensive research on how to decipher customer thought processes, behavioral science is an incredibly useful tool for influencing and predicting their behavior. Our guest today, Shirin Oreizy, is the founder and CEO of Next Step, a marketing agency that specializes in using behavioral science and research methodology to help clients achieve their marketing goals. Their approach is different from traditional marketing, which often puts all customers in the same box. Instead, Next Step seeks to de-risk the process and provide evidence-backed results. Shirin discusses the basics of the behavioral science approach, why it is so useful for agencies, and how her agency's methods lead to the best possible outcomes for clients. In this interview, we'll discuss: The role of behavioral science in digital design. 4-phases to use behavioral science to your agency's advantage. The importance of process transparency to gain clients' trust. An Under-Utilized Tool that Became the Agency's Differentiator Behavioral marketing agencies have changed the way companies approach business, by offering unique solutions and products designed to meet the specific needs of their clients. While many agencies may rely solely on website design, graphics, and typography, successful agencies understand the importance of behavioral science in creating unique products and driving conversions. Shirin's interview explores the four-phase methodology used by her agency to leverage behavioral science, as well as the benefits of process transparency in driving sales. The Role of Behavioral Science in Digital Design The gap between what we know we should do and what we end up doing is significant. Behavioral science takes into account the fact that people's emotions, environment, and social factors heavily influence their decisions. By studying these behaviors, agencies like Shirin's can identify gaps in existing marketing plans and develop tailored solutions that meet the unique needs of their clients. Understanding Human Behavior to Design Unique Solutions and Products Behavioral science is a social science that takes into account many external factors. It's important because people's emotions, environment, and social factors heavily influence their decisions. Behavioral scientists take into account things like people's laziness, biases, and heuristics, which are often overlooked in traditional marketing practices. The 4-Phases to Use Behavioral Science to Your Agency's Advantage Shirin's agency has developed a research methodology called the science of design, which uses behavioral science as the backbone to understanding a situation. It's a combination of qualitative and quantitative research to try to figure out why consumers prefer a product or ad. The 4 phases are as follows: Behavioral Science Assessment: Their behavioral science researchers analyze how the client is currently marketing. They identify gaps and issues that can be addressed immediately. Qualitative Research: This phase involves talking to about 10 people to verify the agency is moving in the right direction. Quantitative Research: This phase involves testing the different hypotheses against each other. The goal is to figure out what works. The test groups have significant numbers so there is no question about the results. Incorporating the principles: Designers and copywriters get involved to incorporate these principles into the work they're doing for the client. Why Process Transparency Will Help You Sell More Process transparency is one of the core principles of behavioral science. Research shows that human beings value effort, hence explaining the process behind a product or service ensures clients will value the result more. Clients with information about what happens in the background are willing to wait longer, increasing the likelihood of driving conversions. Does (seemingly random) human behavior ever catch you completely off guard? I know it does for me. Like “Where did THAT come from? That wasn't my intention - why did it get that response? This is an episode that is not to be missed. Tom Beakbane and Paul Krauss MA LPC discuss his new book How to Understand Everything: Consilience: A New Way to See the World. Tom and Paul discuss many topics including the hard science of how the body and mind interact, tribalism, culture, human behavior, communication and much more. Tom's journey to resurrect the concept of consilience began when he tried to understand why textbook explanations of human behavior did not account for the techniques routinely used by marketing communications and political operatives. Also he observed that textbook psychology did not explain the interpersonal dynamics he observed while providing services to his company's clients. He realized that by weaving together developments on the front lines of biology, physics and computing and re-conceptualizing human behavior as an emergent system it was possible to explain the nature of understanding in ways that are all-embracing. Tom Beakbane is president of a brand marketing company in Toronto, Canada. With an honors degree in biochemistry and neurophysiology from Durham University in England, he was puzzled by the gap between textbook theories of human behavior and his experiences creating business communications. He closed the gap by tapping into developments at the frontiers of science, explained in the just-published book How to Understand Everything. Consilience: A New Way to See the World. Conversion rate optimization (CRO) is more than just design or analytics. It's about understanding human behavior centered around motivation. As a healthcare marketer, you want to make it easy for a user to convert into a patient. By creating ads, landing pages, and content that appeals to people’s aspirations, you’ll be able to persuade them to take the actions you want. They’ll feel understood and their bodies will release dopamine, generating feelings of reward, and suppress cortisol, eliminating feelings of stress. These kinds of behavioral insights form the foundation of effective CRO strategies. CEO, Alex Membrillo and VP of Paid Media & Analytics, Rich Briddock discuss how understanding human behavior can help you optimize conversion rates at your healthcare organization and increase patient acquisition.

The start of a new administration is a great opportunity for federal agencies to take a fresh look at their programs and identify what's working and what needs to be improved on for the betterment of the American people. I’ve had the best job in the world for over 10 years now - where I have the privilege of speaking on stages and in training rooms to groups of leaders around the world about how to increase their influence, focus strategically, and make a positive impact at work and in life. When I stepped out on my own in 2010 to start my business, I had a little bit of experience, a healthy dose of confidence, and a whole lot of hope that I could build the relationships, and create impactful presentations that would result in a successful speaking business. But like a lot of things in my life where I tend to jump off the cliff first, and then think about my parachute later, I wasn’t fully prepared for what it would take to find my lane, to determine how to set my speaking fees, or how to become a recognized expert. So, queue admission into the school of hard knocks, where I’ve gained quite an education along the way, and as a result, have ultimately managed to build a business and life that I truly love. Last year, my friend Dr. Daniel Crosby - who is a great public speaker himself, and was a also my guest on episode 14 of the Impact Makers Podcast, where he talked about understanding human behavior to do well, do good and do you - asked if I would join him on his Standard Deviations podcast to talk about what it takes to create great presentations -- and if you’re into that kind of thing, how to actually get paid to speak, which is one of the most frequently asked questions we both receive. Over a year later, the content of our conversation is still accurate and timely, and I continue to hear from people in Dr. Crosby’s audience who have found it helpful. So I asked him if I could share it with you today, and if you’re interested in crafting great presentations, and/or getting paid to speak, I think you’ll find it helpful. What Dr. Crosby did that 10x’d his speaking revenue. 3 concrete steps to take to build a profitable speaking business. Eric holds a BS in fitness and wellness, an MS in exercise science, a second masters in sports nutrition, a PhD in strength and conditioning, and is a research fellow for AUT at the Sports Performance Research Institute New Zealand. Omar is a successful YouTube content creator from Canada, a partner with Mike Farr and Bart Kwan on Kizen Training, as well has pursuing other business ventures. He’s also a keen observer of media. Here's part of how we broke it down. What sets off our BS detectors? What are some common elements of gimmicks and scams in fitness? Is anything ever really too good to be true? Who usually ends up pitching them? How should scrupulous marketers (and content creators) craft their messages in ways that are not misleading? When weight-loss diets work, they work by creating a caloric deficit and not through any other magic. We’ve established that with our experts on the show already. We’ve also established that cutting out a whole category of nutrient --like cutting carbs in a ketogenic diet – can accomplish a calorie reduction. But what if you cut everything but meat? You may be accomplishing the goal of reducing calories, but at what nutritional cost? Jason Phillips joined us to ponder this diet and share thoughts about whether it’s a good idea…apart from whether or not it’s effective. Jason is the founder of iN³ Nutrition and the Nutritional Consulting Institute. Jason has written for several publications including Men’s Fitness and his own book, Macros Explained: Your Ultimate Guide to Macronutrient Prescription for Health, Performance, and Aesthetics and Macros Applied: Bridging the Gap from Science to Application. Here’s what we came up with on our own: If there’s no real downside to eating vegetables, why not eat them? Outside of a reduction in calories, is there anything special about meat that makes the diet more worthwhile? Are all-or-nothing strategies just easier for some people to stick to? Is there a marketing/FOMO angle? Does taking a more extreme stance equal greater popularity in the fitness space? When does Mike’s “Tequila and Broccoli diet book come out? Our ideas start pretty much from the jump. Jason joins us about 13:38. When the market moves as fast and Donald Trump tweets, how should we think about money in the digital age? Jennifer talks with psychologist and behavioral finance expert Dr. Daniel Crosby about his life story and how he has built a career helping both individual investors and institutional clients understand themselves and the psychology of the market. For Daniel Crosby, the beginning of the story started with an ending. Daniel tells Jennifer the story of how he came into the world on the day of his grandfather’s passing and how that has driven him to live his life to its fullest potential. An important part of leading a rich and full life is to always be learning. Daniel talks about how his love for learning and how his academic education laid the groundwork for developing his interpersonal skills which were key to his success later in life. As the son of an investment manager and advisor, the stability and comfort of his father’s profession was an alluring one. But after serving a mission through his church in the Philippines and helping a close friend whether an eating disorder, Daniel shifted his academic path towards helping people. How do some people with so little manage to find joy in their lives? Jennifer gets Daniel to flex his clinical psychology skills and asks him why some people blessed with great privileges can’t seem to find the same happiness of some people living a simpler or rougher life. He also talks about his own success and his approach to being happy. What drove Daniel to fly straight into graduate school? Jennifer asks Daniel a bit more about his trajectory towards becoming an impactful force in people’s lives. He talks about the value of therapy and why building a strong relationship between therapist and client beats out any high-level degree or specialized school of thought. Misconceptions about therapy and the therapeutic process are a dime a dozen. Daniel does some mythbusting and distills some of what he’s learned as a therapist into some takeaways for listeners that they can use in their personal and professional lives. Whether it’s for work, in our relationships or just in our day-to-day lives, we all talk about ourselves. Jennifer and Daniel talk about why being able to talk about yourself and your feelings openly and authentically with a trusted professional is so important is our society. After being burnt out by individual therapy work, Daniel moved on to workplace-focused psychology work in Atlanta. While doing pre-employment assessments across the Deep South, he learned some hard truths about competence, wealth, meritocracy and the under-recognized value of general intelligence. You’re not that great. Daniel fills us in on one of the key moments of his journey to becoming an impact-maker: a 2011 TEDx talk in Huntsville, Alabama about 7 counter-intuitive truths for living a better and more meaningful life. This talk eventually turned into a self-published book of the same name (check out the links below). “Only as we accept our normality, are we able to build something that is better than normal.” Daniel talks about the central message of his book, the concept of overconfidence bias and how it keeps us back from achieving our fullest potential. In late 2009 – in the swell of the recession – Daniel set out on his own to get away from his rough day job. His new behaviorist economics consultancy called Nocturne Capital offers a wealth of services around the psychology of investment decision making. Jennifer asks the question on all of our minds: so how should we think about money? Daniel offers some of the insights he’s gathered over the years helping people understand and navigate financial markets. Daniel shares a couple tidbits with Jennifer but you can find all 10 of his investing commandments in his book The Laws of Wealth, named the best investment book of 2017. Nicholas Kusmich is the world's leading Facebook advertising strategist, Founder of H2H Media Group and the League Of Extraordinary Marketers and creator of The Art Of Lead Generation. Nicholas is using his unique ability to understand behavior to create advertising strategies that leverage social platforms. The most important question you should ask before advertising, but probably aren't, is do I have a Predictable Profit Process in place that makes it worthy enough to go to Facebook and drive traffic? More eyes will not always equal more sales. Media platforms like Facebook are accelerators. In order for Facebook to be a game changer for you, you must know exactly what a lead is worth to you and how many web visitors become clients in a predictable fashion. Otherwise, Facebook ads will be your downfall. “Facebook is the eyeball store.” How do you develop a Predictable Profit Process? Who are you trying to serve? The business should not revolve around you or your product, but rather the marketplace you are trying to serve. In order to build a sustainable system, you need to identify the specific steps that prospects take before they become an actual client or customer. Be very specific. Pareto had the 80/20 principle, but that doesn't work in social media marketing. Nicholas takes it a step further with the 4 percent rule. Building on Pareto's 80/20 rule, take 20 percent of the 20 percent, which represents 4 percent. The end result is the exact population of the marketplace you are attempting to serve. Get clear on their problems, needs and fears. Learn their four forces: Fears, Frustrations, Wants and Aspirations. Articulate how your product or service gets them closer to where they want to go or solves one of those four forces. Then ask what are the one, two or three conversion events you can put in front of them that will move them from prospect to client. Begin to drive a small number of people there to see if it converts. Track how many people convert for every 100 people who see it. If you know how much each visitor is worth to you, then you now have the magic metric and now have a Predictable Profit Process. Understand that Facebook is not a commerce-driven platform – it is a socially-driven platform. You can not sell directly on Facebook. There always needs to be an intermediary step. “The worst thing you can do on a social platform is bring commercial intent to it.” Nicholas doesn't follow the rules of traditional advertising copy. The one thing that causes people to buy from you and not your competitors is resonance. They have to know, like and trust you. Good communication is when your ideal prospect or customer feels understood by you. If you are not connecting on an emotional level, your copy will not be well received. Nicholas developed the Look, Hook and Took approach to writing copy. Look. The most important step a marketer can take with their Facebook ad is with their image, especially in an attention deficit world. Find images that provoke an emotion through story. Hook. It is important is build rapport. A fundamental strategy to build rapport is a methodology called feel, felt, found: I understand where you are coming from. I have experienced this emotion too and I overcame it when I found _______. Took. In every ad, there must be a very clear Call to Action. The language used should be simple, but direct. For example, I want to give this to you. Click here to download, watch, etc. “In today's world, the currency that creates transactions is connection.” If you want to take the next step towards building a marketing strategy that resonates with your audience and has a huge impact, then check out Nicholas' Behind Closed Doors workshop. Herbert Gintis is Emeritus Professor of Economics at University of Massachusetts and visiting Professor at Central European University. He is known for his theoretical contributions to sociobiology, especially altruism, cooperation, epistemic game theory and gene-culture co-evolution. Herbert has a B.A and M.A in Mathematics but switched his PhD program at Harvard from mathematics to economics. Professor Gintis was part of a group of economists who developed their ideas on a new economics which encompassed issues of alienation of labor, racism, sexism, and imperialism. Herbert has worked extensively with economist Samuel Bowles, writing their landmark book, Schooling in Capitalist America. One of Herbert’s latest books The Bounds of Reason emphasises the unification of economic theory with sociobiology and other behavioral sciences which, in the words of Nobel Prize-winning economist, Vernon L. Smith, “is firmly in the revolutionary tradition of David Hume (Convention) and Adam Smith (Sympathy)”. In the episode you will learn: about the importance of trans-disciplinary research and collaboration. why economics is not the only social science that explains human behavior. how biology, economics and sociology explain the behaviour of humans in different ways and which discipline is correct? about the Ultimatum Game and how it shows the cooperative and non-cooperative behaviour of humans. about the morality of humans and how we reciprocate kindness with kindness and unkindness with unkindness. why reciprocity makes humans so successful as a species. why some species have a symbiotic relationship with other species, which is not the same as reciprocity. how we can fit all the human feelings together to form a multi-disciplinary approach to understanding human behavior. why we always need a system to punish free-riders and non-cooperators. how the future structure of the University can be seen at Arizona State University today. why we need a new generation of thinkers and research centres who are trans-disciplinary. what projects Professor Herbert Gintis is working on right now. why morality controls politics and your vote will not make a difference. how Herbert gets things done in terms of writing books and journal articles. about Herbert’s disagreement with Nassim Nicholas Taleb. why Herbert believes that macroeconomics is wrong and is in agreement with Taleb on that issue. and much much more.
