In today's episode, Rusty and Robyn talk with Frank Nickel, Head of Quantitative Strategies and Investments at Brinker Capital. Frank oversees the setup of the investment process that drives direct investing strategies and risk mitigation across various platforms at Brinker. Prior, Frank spent 27 years in various roles at Morgan Stanley—from asset allocation strategist to director of investment strategy to portfolio manager.   Frank talks with Rusty and Robyn about the ins and outs of direct investing, the concept of “searching for alpha”, and the impact of direct investing on the future of investing (especially with ETFs). “We have the ability to give investors a high price momentum, a version of our direct indexing strategies that allow them to have that ‘search for alpha'. I think the way traditional people think about the ‘search for alpha', it's at the individual security level. We are not going to really attempt to provide that. Our search for alpha is providing some type of factor exposures that investors believe can outperform.” ~ Frank Nickel Main Takeaways  With a direct indexing strategy, you may see bigger returns, compared to a traditional separately managed account. Direct indexing has been on the roll because of tech innovation. From high-net-worth individuals to the mainstream area, firms can manage to bring it to smaller accounts. Direct indexing won't kill ETFs. The only two viable reasons for ETFs to fail are if the government changes taxation, or if technological evolution can lower direct indexing's minimum. Fractional shares trading might be the future with how tech is evolving right now. This can also help to bring the account minimums down. Searching for the alpha involves investing in areas of the market that are projected to outperform. Right now, there's a growing interest in biotech and cybersecurity. In today's episode, Rusty and Robyn talk to Grant Engelbart, Senior Portfolio Manager at Brinker Capital. Grant has been in the industry for more than a decade. His focus is on trading and managing assets, including ETF mutual funds and single securities. Before working as a portfolio manager, Grant was part of the trading and investment research team at Orion Advisor Solutions. Grant talks with Rusty and Robyn about ETF investment strategies, crypto as a new alternative asset class, and the non-financial skills needed in finance. "One of the biggest issues we have in the advisor and investor world today is income generation. With cryptocurrencies, if done the right way, you can create pretty substantial income streams and uncorrelated income streams off of these products." ~ Grant Engelbart Main Takeaways  When choosing an ETF, the first step is to know the exposure you'll gain from it. Other factors to consider are ETF concentration, maximum security weight, index ETF, and consistent growth. Crypto can be a new alternative asset class. The possibilities with crypto are endless, especially with the creation of crypto ETFs and the growth of decentralized finance (DeFi). Getting familiarized with programming languages, improving your writing, and maintaining positive client relationships are non-financial skills needed in finance. Be disciplined and recognize the power of staying in the market long-term. Having a consistent yet adaptable process that is aligned with the client's investment beliefs is important. Daniel highlights a few rules from his book The Laws of Wealth and reminds us how powerful our emotions are and how they drive our decision making much more strongly than data do. We discuss research that shows that forgetfulness makes exceptional investors. One of the most important things you can do when it comes to investing is to do nothing. This is hard to do since most of us have an action bias. We end with some tips on making good financial decisions, the three E's. When Dr. Daniel Crosby was in his 20s, he had a fateful conversation with his father about what he should do for a living. Dr. Crosby’s father was a financial advisor, but young Daniel didn’t think finance was a good fit for his interests and skill set. “I remember saying to him, ‘Dad, but I'm a people person. I like to study human behavior and you just think about math,’ Dr. Crosby says. “He laughed and said, ‘Read these books and tell me if you don't think that emotion and human behavior plays into finance.’ And there was no turning back after that.” Today, Dr. Crosby is the chief behavioral officer at Brinker Capital. He's also a psychologist, a New York Times bestselling author, and a behavioral finance expert who really understands what's happening at the intersection of our minds and the financial markets. On today’s show, we talked to Dr. Crosby about his latest book, “The Behavioral Investor,” and the four psychological tendencies that he has seen prevent folks from building a bigger and better nest egg.

Welcome to the 39th CONKERS’ CORNER recorded on 14th December 2016. In this interview I have the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Daniel Crosby @danielcrosby, the New York Times awarding winning author, behavioural finance expert and sought after thought leader on market psychology. He is also the founder of Nocturne Capital. Dr. Crosby created the sentiment and valuation measures that serve as the overlay for Nocturne’s tactical strategy. His ideas have appeared in the Huffington Post, Think Advisor and Risk Management, as well as columns for WealthManagement.com and Investment News. Daniel was named one of Investment News “40 Under 40” and a “financial blogger you should be reading” by AARP. Daniel’s second book, “Personal Benchmark”, co-authored with Charles Widger of Brinker Capital, was a New York Times bestseller that outlines a highly personalised approach to investing that aligns intention with action while fostering an investment experience that is both enjoyable and rational. Daniel grew up the son of a Financial Adviser and he was so immersed in that world he said that he “never had a chance”. He was steeped in best financial practices and his father would always be “talking about stocks and shares at the table”. His Dad was quite a gifted investor and adviser and therefore “in their house, debt was a four letter word”. Therefore, Daniel grew up with some sound principles with regards to money. Daniel went to College and set out to become an Investment Manager, however mid-way through College he dropped out. He chose instead to become a missionary for his Church and went to work in the Philippines for a few years. Teaching English, building schools, doing a little good in the world. It was at that point he became interested in a profession that would help others. He chose Psychology when he returned to his studies at Brigham Young University, with a renewed dedication and later became a Pre Doctoral Intern (PHD) at Emory University in Atlanta. In July 2008, he went onto become a Consultant at Sperduto and Associates, a firm of corporate psychologists and management consultants, based in Atlanta. When he started his first job, Daniel started investing straight away with Index Funds. He remained there until he moved in January 2010 to IncBlot Organizational Psychology which is a management consultancy, comprised of a team of organisational psychologists with expertise in helping business select exceptional people. In March 2016, Daniel founded Nocturne Capital, which is a behavioural asset management firm serving the needs of individuals and institutions committed to the research-based investment principles set forth in his book :The Laws of Wealth. Daniel is also the President of Nocturne Capital and an executive at the Brinker Capital Center for Outcomes, a financial adviser education initiative that helps advisors understand the powerful impact behavioural science can have on their practices. Daniel is a huge advocate of “know yourself” and one of his biggest lessons is ‘the boom of learning to embrace momentum’. However on a personal basis, he does not look at his own portfolio too often, choosing instead to be a rule-based investor. Daniel opens his award winning* book The Laws of Wealth: Psychology and the Secret to Investing Success, with “The investor’s chief problem, and even his worst enemy, is likely to be himself.” – Benjamin Graham. Daniel advocates that individuals should should seek Financial Advice because research confirms that individuals that do well over the long-term will attain better returns in the long-term. Listen now to gain insights into how Dr Daniel Crosby presents a route map for navigating the complex nature of behavioural psychology, behavioural finance and the laws/strategies of achieving long-term wealth. During a time when many investors are making poor decisions and trading rather than investing. Learn from the lessons in his successful, insightful global investing journey.
