In today's episode, I had a chat with Lali in commemoration of Youth Month in June. I enjoyed having these conversations with the younger generation because there was so much to learn from them. Noxolo, aka Lali Nkunzi is a young lady from Soweto who is taking a gap year. She took a gap year after being rejected by the universities she applied to, only to be accepted by the University of Pretoria for 2023. She then decided to find something she could do in the meantime, to avoid idling at home. She thinks her being away from home will aid in her personal growth, as she believes that there is no development when you are in your comfort zone. Being away from home teaches you certain disciplines about life such as independence, self-reliance, and ways to survive. Lali runs a Crochet Business, where she makes beanies, scarves, and crop tops, and hopes to introduce jerseys in the future. She started her business in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic. She used the money she made from braiding people's hair to start her crocheting business. She taught herself how to crochet by watching videos on YouTube. Quite an unusual trade for a young person in 2022… But Lali says, she felt not enough young people are making handmade stuff, it's a foreign concept as most young people think it's boring and it's something that one would associate with old people. Her advice, she says take risks, and trust your instincts. She says you must be explorative, there are so many options out there. Tune in for more on this insightful and inspiring conversation with a young mind. Connect with me IG & Facebook: Conversations with Mpume Website: www. changeconversations.co.za

In the first episode, the HTPPP team meet for the first time. They do this remotely, via Zoom. We hear their teachers, Steven and Jeanne, explain that the class will pitch and idea for a podcast to the school's leadership. On top of this, their job is to make a podcast about their attempt to convince the school. After class, the students start asking the hard questions. Do people in South Africa really care about podcasts? And how can it make sense to produce a podcast about a podcast? We listen as Sakhe, Zisanda, Noxolo, Yandiswa, Sibu, Garfield and Nwabisa talk this through amongst each other and with their friends. Slowly, a vision begins to emerge

Today I'm talking about hate crimes and homophobia in South Africa. For this episode, we are traveling to KwaThema, a township in Gauteng. There is electricity in kwathema, but there are also these huge towering spotlight-style street lights. They're lifted that high to try provide a measure of light and security, but there are always bits the light doesn't reach. And it was in a patch of deep shadow, in an alley between buildings that a woman called Noxolo Nogwaza was killed in April 2011. Noxolo – which means peace in Zulu - was just 24. She was a mum to two small kids, and she lived with her gran Vuyelwa. She loved soccer, and kwaito music. And, she just so happened to be gay – and it was this fact that made her the target of violent homophobes. In today's episode, Courtney and Stefan are speaking with Kimberley Peters. Kim is a Professor Marine Governance at the Helmholtz Institute for Functional Marine Biodiversity (HIFMB), a research organisation in collaboration with the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) and University of Oldenburg (UOL), in Germany. As a human geographer, she is interested in the social, cultural and political workings of the world around us. Her research group seeks to explore how governance does not just happen anywhere, but somewhere, and is shaped by spatial processes. Her work investigates how the geography of what we seek to govern, or do govern, is shaped by location, the character and qualities of place and relations with surrounding spaces. In the episode, she reflects on how geography has dealt with and is influenced by its historical legacy, and how much of the current perspectives in human geography are critical because of that history. We also discuss her relationship to teaching and her students, working in an interdisciplinary institute, leaving your disciplinary comfort zone, and the research topics she is currently pursuing. Kim has provided a list of references below regarding the history of geography for further information, as she notes that her perspectives are only one of many and not fully comprehensive. She encourages listeners to read the pieces below: For a good overview of the history and 'turns' of geography see: Cresswell T (2013) Geographic Thought: A Critical Introduction. There is a lot being said around the world these days about racism and discrimination. Quite rightly. But pointing fingers and throwing accusations often achieves nothing. The thing that changes attitudes, at a human level, is both fundamentally simple, and embarrassingly difficult. It's casual association. Being casually associated with people from different backgrounds is what leads to a genuine understanding of our commonalities, and a positive exploration of our differences. My conversation with the South African actress, writer, theatre producer, and community organiser Noxolo Bhengu beautifully illustrates the awkward dance that takes place when opportunities for casual association are more scarce. The context of our conversation is Noxolo's work in promoting visibility of the Afro-diaspora in China. But the dialogue that follows is one that should resonate with you, no matter who or where you are. Purposeful visibility leads to casual association leads to meaningful relationships. "Ubuntu and capitalism can live in one room but can never be friends" Sanele touched up on the syndrome of greed, which is evident in society now as people hang onto a belief that there is not enough for everyone, noting specifically to previously disadvantaged individuals who only see the new money for themselves instead of trying to benefit everyone as much as possible. Noxolo sees the solution to individualistic ideals by approaching capitalism with a mindset of abundance, and the only way to achieve that would be to target individuals to remember the richness of our land. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
