Young people are gambling more and more these days, frequently lured by the excitement of taking risks and the possibility of rapid financial gain. The Financial Section Conduct Authority (FSCA) is cautioning young people about the risks of gambling during Youth Month. Gambling may become an addiction and cause financial losses that can have a devastating impact on families. Claire Heckrath talks with host Motheo Khoaripe to provide us with an understanding of the research that was done. The goal of potential adjustments to import taxes is to level the playing field for both domestic and foreign competitors in South Africa's textile and clothing sector, not to harm consumers. Next month, Temu and Shein will impose additional taxes on small-volume, low-value garment orders. Last week, Dan Marokane, the new leader of Eskom, visited the Medupi power station outside of Lephalale on a "healing" mission. According to Bloomberg, the South African bank stock index hit a record high earlier on Friday, rising about 6% at one point, marking the largest increase since November 2020. In today's episode, I had a chat with Lali in commemoration of Youth Month in June. I enjoyed having these conversations with the younger generation because there was so much to learn from them. Noxolo, aka Lali Nkunzi is a young lady from Soweto who is taking a gap year. She took a gap year after being rejected by the universities she applied to, only to be accepted by the University of Pretoria for 2023. She then decided to find something she could do in the meantime, to avoid idling at home. She thinks her being away from home will aid in her personal growth, as she believes that there is no development when you are in your comfort zone. Being away from home teaches you certain disciplines about life such as independence, self-reliance, and ways to survive. Lali runs a Crochet Business, where she makes beanies, scarves, and crop tops, and hopes to introduce jerseys in the future. She started her business in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic. She used the money she made from braiding people's hair to start her crocheting business. She taught herself how to crochet by watching videos on YouTube. Quite an unusual trade for a young person in 2022… But Lali says, she felt not enough young people are making handmade stuff, it's a foreign concept as most young people think it's boring and it's something that one would associate with old people. Her advice, she says take risks, and trust your instincts. She says you must be explorative, there are so many options out there. Tune in for more on this insightful and inspiring conversation with a young mind. Connect with me IG & Facebook: Conversations with Mpume Website: www. changeconversations.co.za

“I am not going to stop, I am going to continue,” says minister of tourism Lindiwe Sisulu on her sustained offensive against the country's constitution and judiciary. Sisulu was addressing a virtual Youth Month event organised by the Unisa Law School on Tuesday. In her speech she resuscitated her controversial letter that launched an unprovoked attack on the country's constitutional order. Her letter was an expression of observations made over time about what she holds as problematic aspects of the country's constitution and judiciary. Sisulu said she is still puzzled by the backlash that followed the open letter but remained firm that her views were correct.
As we commemorate Youth Month, many of the challenges that youth of South Africa have expressed are centered around unemployment, lack of support or funding resources that may young entrepreneurial dreams. Related to that are the mental health issues associated with unemployment. In his Youth Day speech, President Ramaphosa encouraged the young people to use available resources to access jobs and funding for businesses. Ramaphosa also says young South Africans must strive to be entrepreneurs, rather than relying on being employed. We spoke to Nyimpini Mabunda, interestingly born in 1976. He has dedicated some of his work to helping young South Africans navigate their lives, goals and career aspirations by mentoring them.

COVID-19 continues to bring challenges to the school environment across South Africa. South African young people have been struggling with grief as they deal with the impact of COVID-19 on their friends and families. The trauma that many are experiencing is amplified in the pain and loss they feel as they deal with the death of loved ones or teachers or other adults within their circles of influence. The impact is significant and needs careful, holistic processing. Where is God in the midst of this pain? Today's podcast looks at the issue of grief, but from a position of hope. Join Tim as he chats with SU Staff members Luyanda and Kyle as they discuss the things they are seeing in the lives of grieving young people in our local school communities and some tools they find useful as they minister.
The South African student uprisings of 1976 shifted the anti-apartheid struggle. No doubt, that that generation of students should be commemorated and acknowledged. However, Youth Day and Youth Month have become increasingly hollow rituals, as South Africa's young people bear the brunt of many crises. Youth Day has become a chance for old politicians to make vain promises to young citizens. Well, that's what it feels like to me. Watch this episode on Youtube: https://youtu.be/5rdQ3qAhvM0

One of the serious issues facing young people today is bullying, a form of unprovoked aggression that can be directed at another individual or group of individuals with the intent to cause embarrassment or pain. It used to be that you could escape a school or work bully by simply moving locations at the end of the day, but bullying can also take place online, called cyberbullying, via an app or online platform like WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat or TikTok. So instead of being able to escape bullies, they ride in our pockets, come into our homes and follow us wherever we go on our phones or tablets. For many young people, it can seem as if there is no escape. Today's podcast talks about bullying and its impact on young people. Join Tim as he chats with SU Staff members Celest and Shenick as they discuss the impact of bullying at a recent girls' camp and some ways they help these young women deal with this issue.

It’s Youth Month here in South Africa and to celebrate, the Talking Transformation Podcast sits with three young planners: the winner, the runners-up and co-ordinator of the South African Cities Network’s Young Planner and Designer Competition, 2020. All three provide refreshing, powerful, and personal takes on the challenges our cities have and the future cities they want to shape. They explain how they considered these issues and themes in their submissions and the evaluation of competition entries. Based in Glasgow, Scotland - but a Joburger at heart - we speak to winner Zubeida Lowton about her winning entry looking at historic Fox Street, Johannesburg CBD and how she is integrating that work into her Doctoral Research at the university of Glasgow. She practically explains how safety and security and issues of urban connectivity can be considered now and in future Johannesburg. We speak to runner-up and recent graduate of the University of Pretoria, Tshepo Tsotetsi. He speaks with passion about future cities and the role planners have in shaping them. He recognises the complexity and enormity of the challenges and sets out a compelling agenda for change that should inspire and provoke in equal measure. Our third guest is SACN Research Intern, Tlholohelo Mokgere. She adds a welcome third young voice to the discussion, explaining the themes and aspects that shaped the competition and the judging of the entries. She shares her own observations and perspectives on the issues with clarity and enthusiasm. We conclude our discussion with a broader discussion about the youth and their contribution to the future, recognising just how challenging it is to be setting out on their built environment journeys. All three are remarkable young talents. They represent the best SA has to offer and hope for our future. We celebrate their achievements and efforts and trust you will enjoy the episode. My guest is Zakithi Mkhize from South Africa. In this episode, we find out that she had a dream of being a medical doctor that did not work out as planned. However, life led her to still pursue an academic career in medicine. Currently, she is a PhD Candidate in Medicine (Virology) at the HIV Pathogenesis Program at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban, South Africa. Her research focuses on a particular gene called the transactivator of transcription (Tat), which enhances HIV replication and its interaction with host transcription factor positive transcription elongation factor b (P-TEFB). She studies how genetic variation in Tat can affect its interaction with P-TEFB, efficient transcription, and latency. Latency is a significant barrier to HIV cure. Thus, her research will inform HIV cure studies. Zakithi also has a YouTube channel called ‘BlackGirlScientist'. The channel is geared toward motivating, encouraging & inspiring young black people, especially black women, to get into science. She shares her journey through science as well as knowledge & expertise. She aims to break stereotypes and make science cool. Lastly, we also talk about the #CelebratingYouthinSTEM #BlackInSTEMSA campaign that we are running in collaboration with The Root of the Science Podcasts. The importance of this campaign during South Africa's Youth Month. Gratitude is everything. One year ago, this podcast was born. We had nothing at that time. No equipment, no funding and absolutely no presenting experience. We took everything and put it in God's hands. I could say, we did what we needed to do. People spoke and we listened. This session goes to everyone who watched us grow and all the other people we met later. You all matter. Carry that with you. Let your friends know that as young people, we are great, capable and destined to make magic in this world. Together we have what it takes to fill each other's voids and be awesome. Listen to this lovely session with young and driven individuals. Uviwe, Lemogang, Londekile, Tinyiko, Tshepi, Masentle The BA, Tay'though, Carloman. Host : Guy Luyanda Follow us on Instagram

A recent study conducted by The Thompson Reuters Foundation has found that South Africa comes third in Africa after Egypt and Nigeria as the best place to be a social entrepreneur. As we celebrate Youth Month, today we put the spotlight on youth unemployment in South Africa and the possible solutions. According to Stats SA, four out of 10 young people do not have a job. President Cyril Ramaphosa has called the high unemployment rate among the youth, a national crisis. Could social entrepreneurship offer a solution? For more Stephen Kirker spoke to Gugu Mjadu, spokesperson for the 2019 Entrepreneur of the Year® competition sponsored by Sanlam and BUSINESS/PARTNERS and began by asking her to take us through the findings in the Thompson Reuters Foundation report
We've been doing it ……….. or have we?This one is for the youth. Yes, you. If you're between the ages of 15 & 35, this one is for you. And to be honest for the rest of us too. In this episode, I talk to Dr. Karina de Bruin the MD of JvR Academy who is an accomplished academic in her own right. We discuss the future of work, and, as it's youth month, we focus on the youth. Karina's only slightly joking when she says “we start preparing for our careers the minute we are born”.Why? Because when we step back, we realize that the things that make us “work ready” in this 21st Century workspace, are skills we've been tacitly learning from a very young age. Making it work for the world of work so to speak , is really about being aware of what you have and building on it. Dr de Bruin provides very practical après for building these skills and strengths. I particularly enjoyed her 5 steps for building EQ. Enjoy.
We spoke to Bafana Bafana midfielder Bongani Zungu who is in Egypt with the national team for the Africa Cup of Nations. We also spoke to two rising cricketers Matthew Breetzke and Sinethemba Qeshile as we continue to celebrate Youth Month.

We also crossed all the way to France and spoke to SABC Sport reporter Lebogang Dube about Banyana Banyana's 4-0 loss to Germany at the FIFA Women's World Cup.
In commemoration of the 43rd anniversary of youth day (16 June, 1976), this week we talk to reigning Miss SA Tamaryn Green about the 2018 Miss SA pageant, which celebrated its Diamond Jubilee (60th anniversary) this year, and the responsibilities and privileges associated with being Miss SA. We discuss some of the women’s empowerment work Tamaryn is involved with, through her sponsors, like Cell C’s Take A Girl Child to Work programme, which has evolved from one day to a more enduring platform that offers information and guidance to young women to transition into capable empowered adults, and her own forthcoming initiative where she plans to combine health and education into a campaign. We talk about some of the factors that have contributed to her success, from support structures, to having a dream, to hard work and being personable. We consider some of the qualities that women bring to leadership including empathy and compassion. We remark on the gains that women have achieved - a win for one of us is a win for all of us. Tune in for more…

Youth Centres across the country play an important role in the rehabilitation of young street children. It is often the need to escape from poor circumstances at home, that drove them onto the streets in the first place. As the country commemorates Youth Month, Port Elizabeth is home to a youth centre where boys aged between six and 18 are placed by the court. Veronica Fourie paid a visit to the Khayalethu Youth Centre
