Families and communities begin to share in the benefits. In the third episode of our series, we hear more on this topic from Mónica Aguirre, Deputy CEO of Satellite Services at Stargroup México. She spent five years working in the financial industry at Value Casa de Bolsa, Morgan Stanley Capital International, and BBVA Bancomer. In this episode, Lex speaks  Mike Sha - the CEO and co-founder of Tandems (formerly SigFig), a leading provider of AI-powered software for wealth management firms and financial institutions. Together, Lex and Mike discuss the evolution of wealth technology through the lens of Mike's entrepreneurial journey from founding Wikinvest in 2006 to building Tandems. Wikinvest pivoted to portfolio tracking and then to a B2B model, powering major portals like Yahoo Finance and managing over $500 billion in tracked assets. The team's insights into poor retail investment behavior led to building SigFig, a B2B robo-advisor, eventually serving banks like UBS and Wells Fargo.Today, rebranded as Tandems, the firm offers AI-powered tools for advisors across three key areas: meetings, asset gathering, and investment management, with AI integrated via a modular “wealth OS” platform. Tandems uses an open architecture for AI, prioritizing trust, configurability, and high accuracy tailored to the specific workflows of financial advisors. NOTABLE DISCUSSION POINTS:The Realization That Most Investors Struggle on Their Own Sparked the Robo-Advisory Movement - Mike Sha's early data from tracking $400–500 billion in retail portfolios across Yahoo!, CNN, and other finance portals revealed that most individuals consistently underperform when managing their own investments. This insight directly led to the creation of SigFig, one of the first robo-advisors, designed to make high-quality investment advice affordable and automated. It shows how data-driven observation of user behavior can uncover market inefficiencies and spark new product categories.Distribution and Integration Trumps Pure Innovation in Fintech Partnerships - Tandem's evolution from a consumer-facing platform to a B2B software provider for major banks underscored a critical lesson: distribution and trust are the hardest parts of scaling in financial services. Rather than trying to replace institutions, Sha's team embedded within them - learning that success requires deep integration with legacy systems and respect for the bank's compliance and operational frameworks. The “secret” to working with large financial institutions, Sha notes, is understanding their old infrastructure and designing around it - not fighting it.AI's Real Impact in Wealth Management Will Begin with Eliminating Repetitive Work - Tandem's current strategy focuses on AI automation for financial advisors, not as a replacement but as an assistant. Sha highlights that over 90% of an advisor's day involves repetitive administrative work - meeting prep, paperwork, compliance, follow-ups. Tandem's “Wealth OS” connects legacy systems and uses AI to automate these tasks first, freeing advisors to focus on human relationship-building and advice. It's a practical and near-term vision of AI in finance: efficiency before intelligence. TOPICSTandems, SigFig, Wikinvest, wealthtech, wealth management, fintech, ai, artificial intelligence, investment, roboadvisors, finance, financial management, banking, bank partnerships ABOUT THE FINTECH BLUEPRINT

Nonprofit Power Week Finale: Finance Questions Answered

Financial leadership is more than numbers—it's the heartbeat of nonprofit sustainability. In this Nonprofit Power Week finale of The Nonprofit Show, Regional Director Ellie Hume of Your Part-Time Controller (YPTC) brings clarity and candor to some of the most frequently asked financial questions. With an “Ask and Answer” format, the conversation covers everything from roles and responsibilities in financial leadership to the evolving landscape of fractional CFOs.Ellie sets the stage by redefining how we see finance in nonprofits: “Finance is literally the thread that draws every piece of the organization together because without it, nothing works.” She dismantles silos by urging finance professionals to engage deeply with program, marketing, and development teams to ensure that data isn't just accurate but also meaningful for decision-making.The discussion takes a practical turn as Ellie differentiates between controllers, comptrollers, and CFOs. She outlines the transactional oversight of controllers, the governmental nuance of comptrollers, and the strategic future-focus of CFOs. She also digs into the importance of internal controls, noting their role in fraud prevention and audit readiness. The lively session shifts into the governance space. How often should boards review and sign Conflict of Interest (COI) policies? Ellie's answer is clear: annually at minimum, but immediately when new conflicts arise. She gives a relatable example: a contractor-board member bidding on a capital campaign project must disclose and recuse themselves. Transparency, she argues, isn't optional—it's fiduciary duty.Ellie also challenges assumptions about credentials. Do finance directors need to be CPAs? Her answer: “You truly just need great accounting skills and a strategic mindset to help the organization use financial information to make good business decisions.” Certifications like CPA or CMA add credibility but don't replace experience or practical skill. The conversation also explores the rise of fractional leadership. Ellie frames fractional CFOs as an efficient way to access high-level talent at a fraction of the time or cost, particularly useful during transitions or to prepare for a new hire. Fractional arrangements, she explains, can be both short-term bridges and long-term partnerships. The conversation wraps with a powerful reminder for board members: ask tough financial questions. Are resources aligned with mission? What risks are we facing? Do internal controls hold up? And crucially—what training do board members need to responsibly interpret financial statements?#TheNonprofitShow #NonprofitFinance #FractionalCFOFind us Live daily on YouTube!Find us Live daily on LinkedIn!Find us Live daily on X: @Nonprofit_ShowOur national co-hosts and amazing guests discuss management, money and missions of nonprofits! 12:30pm ET 11:30am CT 10:30am MT 9:30am PTSend us your ideas for Show Guests or Topics: HelpDesk@AmericanNonprofitAcademy.comVisit us on the web:The Nonprofit Show

BIO: Pieter Slegers is the founder of Compounding Quality Newsletter. Pieter worked for three years as a Belgian asset manager before focusing full-time on his investment newsletter, Compounding Quality, in July 2022. Compounding Quality has over 1 million followers across social media and nearly 500,000 email subscribers. The goal of the newsletter is to help other investors by focusing on Quality Investing.STORY: At the age of 13, Peter convinced his parents to open a brokerage account. He picked the broker's newest “hottest pick” stock—an oil/gas transport company. He invested everything, thinking the people running the company knew what they were doing. Weeks later, the 2008 financial crisis hit. Peter sold his stock after a year, taking a 60% loss.LEARNING: Small losses are better than catastrophic ones. Knowledge is your only edge. “People who invest in individual stocks will make mistakes. There's no doubt about that, but it's way better to make a mistake with a few hundred dollars compared to $100,000.”Pieter Slegers Guest profilePieter Slegers is the founder of Compounding Quality Newsletter. Pieter studied Financial Management at the KULeuven and graduated summa cum laude. He worked for three years as a Belgian asset manager before focusing full-time on his investment newsletter, Compounding Quality, in July 2022. Compounding Quality has over 1 million followers across social media and nearly 500,000 email subscribers. The goal of the newsletter is to help other investors by focusing on Quality Investing.Worst investment everAt the age of 13, Peter earned his first paycheck by stocking shelves at a supermarket. Eager to grow his savings, he persuaded his parents to open a brokerage account (a feat for minors in Belgium).Despite his lack of investing knowledge, he diligently explored his broker's platform for ideas. A new stock caught his eye on the broker's “hot picks” list—an oil/gas transport company. He invested all his earnings, believing in the company's potential.Peter didn't conduct any research, despite his limited knowledge of oil and gas and his complete lack of investing experience. He simply trusted the “hot pick”.The crashWeeks later, the 2008 financial crisis hit. Peter sold his stock after a year, taking a 60% loss. His family was not impressed by his poor investment skills and told him that investing was akin to gambling, and he should consider working for the government instead.Pieter felt like such a failure. However, that $300 loss was his best investment. It hurt, but it taught him never to follow others blindly.Lessons learnedSmall losses are better than catastrophic ones. Losing $300 at the age of 13 beats losing $300,000 when you're 40. Early pain builds immunity to big mistakes.Knowledge is your only edge: If you don't understand how a company makes money, you're gambling, not investing.Failure fuels obsession. That loss made Pieter devour investing books, 10-Ks, and financial news. Pain became his mentor.Andrew's takeawaysAllow young investors to make mistakes with small sums (e.g., companies they understand, such as Netflix or Coca-Cola).Humility beats hubris. 90% of professional investors at Goldman Sachs underperform. What makes you different? It's your checklists, not confidence.Read biographies, study market history, and connect patterns. Wisdom compounds like interest.Actionable...
