After 8 years of interviewing people in the regeneration sector, It's become clear to me that knowledge is not as valuable as experience. Gathering facts, concepts and theories is great up to a point, but until you put those ideas into practice, it's impossible to know if those ideas clash with your reality, or require adaptation to what's really going on on the ground. For this reason I was excited to see that Don Hall, who has worked with the transition towns movement in various capacities for 16 years now, has come out with a new book titled, The Regeneration Handbook: Transform Yourself to Transform the World. Don also holds a Master's in Environmental Leadership from Naropa University, a certification in Permaculture Design from the Central Rocky Mountain Permaculture Institute and is currently the Training Coordinator for Transition Network. You can find accounts of much of his work and learnings at his website and blog at evolutionary change.org In this episode a lot of what we explore revolves around the International Transition Network, how it started, and how it's grown to a movement since the early 2000s. We go into Don's practical experience building the transition movement in both Colorado and Florida, some of the shared priorities of those communities that formed the basis of initiatives and unity that was formed, and how others can participate in creating these kinds of programs in their own communities. We also get into related topics like how transition is as much an internal process as an external community one, and the skills that Don believes we need to relearn in order to live in close knit communities the way that almost everyone used to in recent history.

In this episode of The Sentinel, we focus on the next generation of Native leaders. We are joined by three newly elected officers of the NCAI Youth Commission. The Commission was established in 1997 to provide a space for young tribal leaders to pinpoint issues of importance and strategize paths of action, then advocate for those issues on behalf of Native youth. In this lively discussion facilitated by Alison Black, NCAI's Youth Leadership and Training Coordinator, we hear firsthand from the officers about their respective backgrounds, what being on the Commission means to them, and what they hope to achieve during their terms of office. Our listeners will be inspired by their passion, their knowledge, their hope for the future, and their commitment to advancing the principles of tribal sovereignty both within NCAI and within their own communities.
Don Hall has served in a variety of capacities throughout the Transition Towns Movement over the past 15 years, and is currently Training Coordinator for the International Transition Network. Many “experts” are projecting reasons for optimism in the real estate market. Wall Street predicts the Fed will be cutting rates, Fannie Mae projects mortgage rates to come down, NAR expects listings to increase, and places like "Housing Wire" report shifts in confidence. I sit down with Chris Rao, 3rd generation Managing Broker, Marketing Director, Owner and Training Coordinator at Berkshire Hathaway Home Services Page Realty, to discuss why he and his team are excited about the upcoming year. We discuss real estate and mortgage trends and what we expect more of in 2024.
My friends, I'm about to go skiing for the first time in over 4-years at the end of January. So I needed to consult with the #1 person I know in the world on this. Her name is Jennifer Lockwood and you're going to want to know her if you are into skiing and fitness. She's a pro amongst pros. She's a fit-pro who has been changing lives for more than 30-years. And she's an elite skier, instructor, and pro who knows the snow-skiing world better than anyone I know. Oh, and she just happens to be a long-standing extraordinary member & teammate in the Todd Durkin Mastermind group of fitness pros, trainers, coaches, and fitness business owners. I can tell you this….today's IMPACT SHOW will start strong, be smooth throughout, and come burning through the gates at the end. Heck, we may all even have an “apres-ski” afterwards (of what is technically the last show of 2023. Whaatt???). Here is SOME of what you will get today…along with a whole heckuva lot smack talking from me as I challenge her to a downhill race (what was I thinking!). Here we GO… Jenn's background in skiing, fitness, training, and how she eventually married her love for training, fitness, and skiing? What does the Todd Durkin Mastermind mean to you? Favorite memory or two from the Mastermind… What are your Top 2 or 3 big accomplishments from this past year? Share 2-3 of your BIG goals for 2024. Jenn shares a ton about her desire to get her Peak Ski Conditioning program in even more ski-enthusiasts hands because people can do the “dry-land” training anywhere with very little equipment and it's all virtual…and it WILL improve their skiing. If there was one person on your Mastermind Team you wanted to give a special shout out to, who would that be and why? If someone was a fit-pro, trainer, or coach, why should they consider joining the Mastermind? Where is Jenn Lockwood going to be in 3-years? All of Jenn's follow-up contact information and the very special BONUS (you will not believe this!) if you get her program before January 25th… I love seeing Jenn Lockwood live life. She's combining all her passions, including supporting her two sons who are “extreme” snowboarder athletes. If you enjoy today's IMPACT SHOW and you know any other snow-ski enthusiasts who would, please share this episode with them and on your social media please. Thank you. So that we can repost your share on our IG stories, please TAG us at: IG: @ToddDurkin @JenniferLockwood #PeakSkiConditioning Jennifer Lockwood BIO: Jennifer Lockwood is a member of the elite Technical Team for the Northwest Professional Ski Instructors of America, Training Coordinator and Snowsports Instructor at Mt. You might not be as crazy as you think. That noise you hear in your walls and attic that sounds like a bear cub, could actually be a mouse, bat, raccoon or squirrel. For many homeowners, the changing seasons bring with them a common concern – unwanted house guests in the form of insects, rodents, and other critters. These animals often seek shelter from the cold or a place to nest, and they can become quite a nuisance. Dane Maier, Training Coordinator and Supervisor at Kwik Kill Pest Control, says, “Many times they are going into the corners of your siding, attic space, or insulation in order to beat the cold weather. They also seek shelter in your home for protection from predators.” He said that many common invaders follow certain cycles. For example, fall invaders operate on a 12-year cycle. This means that how much we see them varies depending on their position in the cycle. “If they're at year two or three in their cycle, we're probably not going to see quite as many out and about,” says Maier. “If they're closer to that 10 or 12 year mark, they will be more prevalent. Understanding these cycles can help predict when certain pests will be more or less active in a given year.”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Maternal mental health has a profound impact on individuals, couples, families, children, and our society as a whole. It's important that every parent, regardless of race, color, or ethnicity, has access to resources and support when they need it most, and that just isn't the case in our country. Today's conversation focuses on maternal mental health in the Black community, and our perspective comes from a dedicated, mission-driven mental health provider who wants to make a difference in the lives of Black mothers. There is so much for us to learn and understand about this topic, so join us now for the conversation. Keisha Reaves is the owner and clinical director of Push Thru Therapy. As a Georgia native, she has witnessed the stigma of mental health and has made it her mission to normalize therapy. With more than 16 years in the mental health profession, she is now a Certified Perinatal Mental Health provider serving birthing parents who are trying to conceive, have fertility issues, experience infant loss, are transitioning into parenthood, and those with perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. She has volunteered with Northside Hospital's Infant Loss/ Bereavement Group and served for three years on the Postpartum Support International Georgia Chapter Board as the Training Coordinator, as well as currently volunteering as an educator to providers treating birthing parents in their practices. She is a facilitator for the Mocha Moms Group at the Atlanta Birth Center, and she facilitates a Black Moms group through Push Thru Therapy. In today's episode, Keisha shares her personal story, along with giving us perspective on the factors that make Black maternal mental health and reproductive education so vitally important. She is intensely passionate about maternal mental health and strives to spread information, education, resources, and support to women of color. Show Highlights: How Keisha's journey brought her to the important work she does today How Keisha's first pregnancy played out with many signs of postpartum depression and anxiety—and she didn't realize it at the time How she experienced sleep deprivation, brain fog, feelings of isolation, and had no friends and family close by to help How Keisha felt shame and stigma around seeking therapy as a mental health clinician–and why she determined to help others through her work What Keisha sees as gaps in adequate support for Black women—and why so many people of color are afraid to ask for the help they need How Black mothers in the South experience societal and generational pressure to a greater degree because of the history of slavery Why antepartum anxiety is a big challenge for many mothers How Keisha's second pregnancy was a different experience because she was proactive and had support in place How unique worries and concerns (and anxiety) show up for Black mothers in today's world–and why Keisha focuses on helping Black mothers to “be present in the joy of motherhood” How a therapist who “looks like me” can be more helpful with sympathy and empathy What Keisha would like to see in our progress with maternal mental health What steps Keisha is taking now in her work to reach more people with education and information, both for mental health providers and mothers Resources: Connect with Keisha: Website, Push Thru Therapy Website, Instagram, Push Thru Mom Instagram Visit www.postpartum.net for resources and support! In February the CDC released its latest Youth Risk Behavior Survey findings. Somewhat needless to say the data is discouraging. For example, in 2021 40% of high school students, 60% of high school female students and 70% of high school LGBQ students reported feeling sad or hopeless. Among other findings, 22% of high school students had seriously considering suicide, 18% made a suicide plan and 10% had attempted suicide - these percentages are the highest reported since the first Youth Risk Behavior survey was first fielded in 2011. During this 36-minute interview Dr. Trede and Ms. Shapiro begin by discussing Youth Risk Behavior Survey findings concerning sadness and hopelessness, data concerning girls, LGBQ students and suicidality generally. They discuss timeliness of care and care integration, self harm, therapeutic approach, alternative therapies, the importance of modeling pro social behaviors, and they note subject areas to improve behavioral health policy including policies to help remove the stigma associated with behavioral health and improve family support. Dr. Felix Trede serves as the East Boston Neighborhood Health Center/South End Community Health Center Behavioral Health Clinician and Training Coordinator. Dr. Trede began his career as a clinical case manager/rehabilitation specialist with Bay Cove Human Services in Boston in 2008. He joined the Behavioral Health team at SECHC as an intern in 2014 before joining as a full-time staff member in 2018. He earned his Psy.D. at William James College.Ms. Laura Shapiro serves as an East Boston Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. She graduated from Northeastern University in 2013 with an advanced practice degree and completed her practicum at Lynn Community Health Center where she provided psychiatric consultations at their school-based health centers. In 2021, she began working at EBNHC as a mental health nurse practitioner.
