[Editor's Note: We experienced some technical difficulties with the audio of this episode. Our apologies, and thank you for your understanding!]Meghann Fahy's been thriving on screen for quite some time now. She was in over 80 episodes of One Life to Live as Hannah O'Connor and starred in the hit Freeform series The Bold Type which ran for five seasons. But, there's no denying that The White Lotus was a different kind of game-changer. Not only did Mike White's HBO series continue to be a pop culture sensation in its second season, but the quality of the new episodes earned nine members of the ensemble Emmy nominations, including Fahy.Since that Emmy nomination? Fahy's downright soaring. She had a role in the 2024 genre mash-up gem Your Monster starring a Collider Ladies Night favorite, Melissa Barrera. She was in The Perfect Couple with Nicole Kidman, she was in Rebuilding with Josh O'Connor which earned high praise at Sundance, and is also in Molly Smith Metzler's highly anticipated Netflix series Sirens with Julianne Moore and Milly Alcock. All very exciting achievements, but there's something extra special about the movie Fahy has hitting theaters on April 11. Christopher Landon's Drop marks the very first time Fahy is #1 on the call sheet for a feature film. She headlines as Violent, a widowed mother reluctantly going on her first date in years. While dining in an upscale restaurant with her dating app match, Brandon Sklenar's Henry, Violet starts getting a string of unusual and alarming anonymous drops to her phone. Is it her date? Is it another diner? Or perhaps it's an employee at the restaurant. Violet doesn't know and she'll have to figure it out on her own because the assailant is watching and they insist she tell no one - or else.Drop rocks a sharp script and the much-needed skilled mind and eye to execute it in Landon, but the success of the film heavily depends on Fahy's ability to deftly navigate the production challenges that come with such a concept while also ensuring the viewer can feel the threat Violet's under, and she excels tackling both - big time. While celebrating Drop's World Premiere screening at SXSW, Fahy visited the Collider Media Studio at the Cinema Center for a Collider Ladies Night interview to go back to the beginning and recap her journey to landing at the top of the call sheet. In this episode, we're joined by the hilarious and insightful Adam Capriolo who has been performing since grade school, dreaming of the stage from as early as first grade. Together, we dive into the ever-changing comedy landscape, reflecting on how the lack of funding for writers and shifting industry trends have impacted the genre we all miss so much. From starting out as an actor at 18 to landing a role on The Bold Type and leveraging it for career-changing opportunities, Adam shares how small, unexpected projects often bring the most joy—proving that bigger doesn't always mean better. He opens up about the unique challenges of acting: the uncertainty of long-term roles, the insecurity of waiting for the next call, and how it can feel like being in an “abusive relationship” with the industry. We also discuss the realities of modern streaming, the pros and cons of serial versus episodic TV, and what networks and streamers are looking for today. Through it all, Adam reminds us to focus on the craft, not the category or the prestige of the studio, and to find fulfillment in the work itself. ✨ Key Takeaways: Don't take yourself—or the industry—too seriously. Your acting career is always evolving; show up with confidence because you belong there! Joy in your work comes from doing your best and letting go of unrealistic expectations. Inner peace is priceless, and leaving a legacy doesn't require being Brad Pitt. This episode is a refreshing, grounded take on staying true to yourself in a business that can be unpredictable and overwhelming. He will appear in All I Need for Christmas this Countdown to Christmas season. He also appeared on the series Reign, a series for which Norma Bailey directed a couple of episodes. Jessica Sipos plays Ava. Jessica has 25 acting credits, which include 38 episodes of Chesapeake Shores, Betty's Bad Luck in Love, and a role in Soccer Mom Madam, which also stars Girls Gone Hallmark fave: Matty Finochio. Catherine Disher, Mark Holden, and Katherine Drysdale all return in their roles as Betty, Captain Magnusson, and Teddy, respectively. Steven Pacey plays butler/valet Reynolds. This is Steven's first appearance on Hallmark. His past roles include House of the Dragon, Return to House on Haunted Hill, and the TV series adaptation of The Flatshare. Chay Faraday Browne plays Tobias. Chay has 7 acting credits, including the series Right Swipe and The Surveyor. Love on the Danube: Royal Getaway was filmed on location in Budapest. Our Thoughts on Love on the Danube: Royal Getaway What We Liked Dynamic Duo:We enjoyed the chemistry between Dan Jeanotte (Joe) and Jessica Sipos (Ava). Dan consistently brings charm to his roles, and Jessica's energy was palpable. Their interactions felt genuine, contributing to the movie's overall emotional appeal. Supporting Cast:Catherine Disher's presence was a definite plus. She's the kind of character you'd want on your cruise — exuding wisdom and charm. Moreover, her scenes with Steven Pacey's Reynolds hinted at a compelling subplot that we wish had more screen time. Scenic Locations:The movie's on-location shoots were visually stunning. Budapest's beautiful landmarks and the vibrant European backdrops significantly elevated the movie. Visually, it felt more genuine and less reliant on the cliché Hallmark sets. Animated Intro:The custom animated intro for the movie was a delightful touch. It added a unique flavor and set a charming tone before delving into the story. What We Wished For Plot Predictability:While enjoyable, the movie followed the well-worn Hallmark formula a bit too closely, making it painfully predictable at times. The fake royal trope is getting tiresome, and we long for some fresh storylines in future films. More Cruise Content:For a movie centered around a cruise, there was surprisingly little "boat stuff." We hoped for more scenes showing the cruise experience, which felt sidelined in favor of land-based storytelling. ...

Casey Mank shares her journey from being an English major to starting her own company that focuses on workplace writing and communication coaching. She discusses the challenges and opportunities she encountered along the way, including teaching English in Thailand and working with generative AI programs. Casey emphasizes the importance of clear and effective communication in the workplace and offers advice for women entrepreneurs. She also highlights the value of mentors and recommends books on communication and messaging. Takeaways English and humanities majors have various career paths beyond teaching, including professional writing and communication coaching. Generative AI programs can assist with writing, but human editing and direction are still essential for producing high-quality content. Research and asking for help from experienced individuals are crucial when starting a business. Effective communication involves considering the audience's needs and providing actionable information. A graduate of the world-renowned New School For Jazz And Contemporary Music, William has studied and worked with some of the greatest musicians in the world, including Grammy® nominees Bobby Sanabria, Dave Douglas, Charles Tolliver, Cecil Bridgewater, and Andy Mckee, as well as Grammy® winners Bill Kirchner, Robert Sadin, and Hank Schocklee (Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame Inductee, Public Enemy). As an accompanist and session musician, he has worked with artists such as Katie Stevens (American Idol, The Bold Type), Coyle Girelli (Your Vegas, The Chevin), Ron McClure (Blood, Sweat & Tears), R&B hitmaker James "D-Train" Williams, and numerous other Broadway stars and opera singers. Upon first working with William, the late acclaimed librettist Roger O. Hirson (Tony Award®-nominee, Pippin) simply said, "He's a genius." He made his Carnegie Hall debut at age 16, and was featured on NBC Nightly News at 17 while at the Havana International Jazz Festival in Cuba. William is also a trained vocalist, in addition to having received training on violin, trumpet, clarinet, mallet percussion, concert percussion, drums and handbells. He recently served as the Music Director for the Off-Broadway production of Fringe Deaths (2019). William is currently in the process of developing four full-length musicals he wrote with late Hollywood screenwriter, Lawrence Alexander (Charlie's Angels, CHiPs, Barnaby Jones). He was recently named a 2022 Jonathan Larson Grant Finalist by American Theatre Wing. The musical centers around Quentin Roosevelt, the youngest son of Theodore Roosevelt, who embarks on a forbidden romance with Flora Payne Whitney, a wealthy heiress from a different social sphere. The Roosevelts, renowned for their political activism and their role in trust-busting (which significantly impacted the Whitney family's wealth), stand in stark contrast to the reserved Whitneys, who are determined to avoid scandal of any kind. The story follows Quentin as he navigates the pressures of familial expectations, personal ambition, and the looming shadow of war. Through a mix of historical events and artistic interpretation, the musical delves into themes of heroism, love, and the impact of war on individuals and their families. Quentin weaves together dramatic scenes, emotional soliloquies, and powerful musical numbers to create a moving portrait of a young man caught between personal desire and duty, love and loss, and the enduring question of how to make one's mark in the shadow of a powerful legacy.

How to write smarter emails Writing is a learned skill Episode 193 (Grace is based in Washington DC) In this conversation with Grace Foster we explore: Why we need to learn how to write smarter emails The danger of emotional writing Checking your writing for tone Consider the New York Times test Recognizing our negative bias Why you don't want to "bury the lead" How to kick start the writing process Recognizing the difference between the terrible drafts and final edit About our guest: Grace Aldridge Foster is co-founder of Bold Type, a WBENC certified 100% women owned company that trains people how to write more effectively in the workplace. Learn more about her company and services here https://www.boldtype.us/ Get the free guide to remove clutter from your writing https://www.boldtype.us/clutterbust ----- Excerpts from this conversation with Grace Foster: Your writing speaks for you when you're not in the room. So you have to work harder to make sure that that your message is being received the way you intended it, because you aren't there to walk it back or to course correct. ----- George, where do I start? I'll first say that I have a lot of sympathy for people writing emails, because we're all expected to do it. We write emails all day, every day, they are the cornerstone of workplace communication. And yet no one actually has been taught how to write good emails, what happens is we just get into the workplace, and we start observing how other people do it. And we start emulating them. Well, what happens if everyone who's already there is already writing terrible emails, you never sort of had a chance, right? So I just want to say there are a lot of people out there who are very smart, and actually very good writers, but who still write terrible emails. And mostly it's because they've never been taught to do better. Things that I noticed are, of course, terrible subject lines, mostly people actually include subject lines these days, thankfully, gone are the days of kind of empty subject lines, because their spam filters, you know, latch on to those completely. But a lot of times, folks are just way too vague in their subject lines. And I think one of the reasons for that is people forget one of the primary purposes of sending an email versus something else picking up the phone and calling for example, is that you have a record, your inbox is an archive, you can search your inbox looking for a particular conversation or message from someone. But when you have a very vague subject line, it gets much more difficult to search for a particular email or particular conversation that you had previously. So it's not just that they're vague, which is a problem the first time you receive them that it becomes a problem also, if you want to find that email again later. So that is certainly a common problem that I see. There. Also, too long. Emails are too long. They are too wordy. They're either too formal or not formal enough, right. The level of formality often doesn't fit the audience and the purpose of a particular message. And something that we may talk about is that the frustration that I hear over and over from managers who engage in bold type to do email training is why don't my employees just know how to do it right. It's a judgement call. All it's a judgement issue, you know, why don't they just understand why don't they just get that that email of a sent wasn't right. But that's a difficult thing to learn, it takes time. ----- You should email like, your messages might end up on the front page of The New York Times because it's happened. ----- ----more---- Your Intended Message is the podcast about how you can boost your career and business success by honing your communication skills. It's in the water, baby! We're discussing One Tree Hill S4E4, “Can't Stop This Thing We Started” aka the one where we learn that we have been gaslit into thinking Brooke (Sophia Bush) was pregnant when it was actually Haley (Bethany Joy Lenz)! It's also when we get further confirmation that Derek (Matt Barr) has far from brotherly love for Peyton (Hilarie Burton Morgan); get introduced to Shelley (Elisabeth Harnois), the Clean Teens and some problematic anti-choice narratives; and DebRoe (Barbara Alyn Woods/Moira Kelly) continues to be on the outs. Also, Rachel (Danneel Ackles) poses for Maxim and we're both feeling very bisexual about it (Don't worry, we do unpack some of the problematic aspects from behind the scenes as well). We also discuss: The episode's namesake, “Can't Stop This Thing We Started” by Bryan Adams. Portrayals of addiction Whether the “pregnancy twist” works. Is Dan (Paul Johansson) complicated or just a terrible person? Lucas (Chad Michael Murray) rejoining the Ravens. In a rapidly changing New York, two forces battled for the city's soul: the pro-slavery New Yorkers who kept the illegal slave trade alive and well, and the abolitionists fighting for freedom. We often think of slavery as a southern phenomenon, far removed from the booming cities of the North. But even though slavery had been outlawed in Gotham by the 1830s, Black New Yorkers were not safe. Not only was the city built on the backs of slaves; it was essential in keeping slavery and the slave trade alive. In The Kidnapping Club: Wall Street, Slavery, and Resistance on the Eve of the Civil War (Bold Type Press, 2020), historian Jonathan Daniel Wells tells the story of the powerful network of judges, lawyers, and police officers who circumvented anti-slavery laws by sanctioning the kidnapping of free and fugitive African Americans. Nicknamed "The New York Kidnapping Club," the group had the tacit support of institutions from Wall Street to Tammany Hall whose wealth depended on the Southern slave and cotton trade. But a small cohort of abolitionists, including Black journalist David Ruggles, organized tirelessly for the rights of Black New Yorkers, often risking their lives in the process. Taking readers into the bustling streets and ports of America's great Northern metropolis, The Kidnapping Club is a dramatic account of the ties between slavery and capitalism, the deeply corrupt roots of policing, and the strength of Black activism. Against a backdrop of ongoing resistance to racial desegregation and strident calls for Black Power, the NBA in the 1970s embodied the nation's imagined descent into disorder. A new generation of Black players entered the league then, among them Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Spencer Haywood, and the press and public were quick to blame this cohort for the supposed decline of pro basketball, citing drugs, violence, and greed. Basketball became a symbol for post-civil rights America: the rules had changed, allowing more Black people onto the playing field, and now they were ruining everything. Enter Black Ball: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Spencer Haywood, and the Generation That Saved the Soul of the NBA (Bold Type Books, 2023)l, a gripping history and corrective in which scholar Theresa Runstedtler expertly rewrites basketball's “Dark Ages.” Weaving together a deep knowledge of the game with incisive social analysis, Runstedtler argues that this much-maligned period was pivotal to the rise of the modern-day NBA. Black players introduced an improvisational style derived from the playground courts of their neighborhoods. They also challenged the team owners' autocratic power, garnering higher salaries and increased agency. Their skills, style, and savvy laid the foundation for the global popularity and profitability of the league we know today. Paul Knepper covered the Knicks for Bleacher Report. His first book, The Knicks of the Nineties: Ewing, Oakley, Starks and the Brawlers That Almost Won It All was published in 2020. You need other people to react to your draft with you and give you that perspective.” — @bold_type“I would love it if teams within organizations would actually just take a few minutes to sit down and set out what their own best practices are around emails for emailing each other and their clients.” — @bold_type“So (BLUF) bottom line up front, it just means you come in and you immediately say what is the main high-level takeaway from this communication? And then you can go back and say, and here's the background and here's the details, and here's how we got here.” — @bold_type“Especially when I see somebody sending an email that's just all over the place, I'm like, tell me what you're gonna tell me. Yeah baby! We're closing out the year with none other than Groundling alum and fellow wig lover, Mindy Sterling. You Might Know Her From: The Goldbergs, Desperate Housewives, Drop Dead Gorgeous, iCarly, The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, ConMan, and the Austin Powers trilogy. We go deep with Mindy on her iconic lesbian role, Frau Farbissina, but also dig into the lesbian subplot lurking beneath Ron Howard's Grinch film. Plus: working with kids and dogs, her repartee with the late, great Leslie Jordan in the Alan Tudyk web series, ConMan, the surprising generosity of Teri Hatcher, and why Jim Carrey was more method than Mike Myers.
