Amandla's performance was criticized for not meeting the expectations set by her co-stars. Manny Jacinto received high praise for his intense and methodical portrayal of Chimera. The importance of death in the Star Wars universe was highlighted, with a call for more meaningful character arcs. Frank and Thomas are hopeful but cautious about the series' conclusion. Memorable Quotes: "This episode very much felt like that room temperature coffee." - Thomas "Some people are just not destined to be good actors. Amandla is not a good actress." - Frank "You shouldn't be able to open your mouth about the acolyte unless you're putting in the time." - Frank

Kenny Garrett has been playing for more than 40 years. Originally from Detroit, he joined the Duke Ellington Orchestra in the late 70s, when it was being run by Ellington's son Mercer. He also played with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, and with Donald Byrd, Woody Shaw, and Freddie Hubbard. He was a member of a young lions group put together by Blue Note Records in the 80s called Out Of The Blue that also included the late drummer Ralph Peterson, and he was already recording as a leader when he was invited to join Miles Davis's band in 1987. He played on the album Amandla, and was part of the Davis band all the way until the end of Miles's life in 1991. Miles Davis even made a very rare guest appearance on one of Garrett's albums, Prisoner Of Love, from 1989.Kenny Garrett's discography as a leader has taken him in a lot of really interesting directions. His 1995 album Triology, with Brian Blade on drums and either Charnett Moffett or Kiyoshi Kitagawa on bass, is a really intense, high-energy record that kind of marries bebop language to post-Ornette Coleman freedom, but the real key to the whole thing is the way he executes these really complex melodies on tunes like John Coltrane's "Giant Steps," Wynton Marsalis's "Delfeayo's Dilemma," and Mulgrew Miller's "Pressing The Issue." It's a tremendous showcase for his technical command of the saxophone. But the album that first got me interested in his work was Beyond The Wall, a 2006 release that was a collaboration with Pharoah Sanders that also featured Mulgrew Miller on piano, Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Robert Hurst on bass, Brian Blade on drums, and on some tracks there were strings and harp and Chinese instruments and a six-member vocal ensemble. It's not spiritual jazz in the way that term is used now, and it's not world music, it's entirely its own thing, and it's particularly fascinating because you might not think of Kenny Garrett and Pharoah Sanders having that much in common, artistically speaking, but they really did. They also recorded a live album together that came out in 2008. Garrett talks about Pharoah a lot in the interview you're about to hear. And Kenny Garrett's latest album is going to surprise a lot of people. It's called Who Killed AI, and it's a collaboration with Svoy, an electronic music producer. Garrett plays alto and soprano sax on it, and all the rest of the music is made with synths and programmed drums. Even the horns are multi-tracked and fed through effects at times. It's structured as kind of a suite — the first track is called “Ascendence,” and there are also pieces called “Transcendence,” “Divergence” and “Convergence.” But there's also a really beautiful version of “My Funny Valentine,” which lays the ballad melody over these kind of shimmering keyboard sounds and a hard drum 'n' bass beat. It's not at all what I was expecting when I was told that there was a new Kenny Garrett album on the way.I'm really glad I had the chance to talk to Kenny Garrett. We discussed his history with Miles Davis and with Woody Shaw, his early musical upbringing, his work with Pharoah Sanders, his approach to synthesizing genres and musics from around the world, and much more. I think you're going to enjoy this conversation.

Also we hear from Marisa Berry Méndez, who works with Amnistie internationale Canada francophone and Sophie Toupin who is a member of the Amandla! Radio team on CKUT, which also documented this event. Gowdy. Also there is a clip from a track Bembeya Jazz National, a Guinean ensemble that was active in the 1960s. Africa is the perfect place to do well and to do good. Think about it. It's an underestimated continent with 54 countries, 1.4 billion people, a treasure chest of investment opportunities and a market valued at more than $3.1 trillion US and an estimated $430 million empty bellies. There is a tremendous opportunity for agriculture corporations to seize this challenge and win both in terms of financial success and social impact. Amandla Ooko-Ombaka fleshes this out in this conversation with Anne Pratt. Amandla is a Senior McKinsey Associate Partner and a member of the Leadership Council for Harvard University Center of African Studies. In this episode, she talks about the untapped opportunity to reach the last mile and help the poorest of the poor in Africa's rural communities achieve food security. She shares how she helped a multinational agricultural company break into Africa's billionaire club and how she asserted her own moral courage within McKinsey to redefine the operating system of the company. Plus, she shares her Mandela Moment, a moment in a cold Boston winter when she had her own Nelson Mandela Mini Long Walk to Freedom. Tune in for all of these and more!Love the show? I saw bodies bodies bodies the other day and it was one of my most anticipated movies of the year! So many people I love Chase Sui Wonders from generation (RIP Fuck discovery+) Amandla Stenberg, Pete Davidson the girl from industry I literally loved it it was so good like I watched it and was just like this is what the next age of movies will look like I loved how important phones were in the film without seeing like it be based around social media with like the overplayed text messages on screen or calls like its displayed on grownish it was just so real I loved the premise the LGBTQ representation and the portrayal from a friendship of girls and like one boy because that looks like my younger friend groups like identical down to the older guy like woah so real and the fighting and sexual tension and history and even the way drugs are involved I love how A24 Does things anyway I didn't think I would make an episode about this because I had nothing to really say until I go on to tiktok and twitter and see this film critic going at Amandla Stenberg and saying that the movie was an advertisement for cleavage or something in those words and that was gross Amandla jokingly snapped back at the critic saying she shouldve foucssed on the movie more and I agree considering I didn't even if notice any of the women cleavage because the movie was so good and thats just not where my brain went? I thought there outfits were very normal for gen z these days and I also think its disgusting that a critic took the route of body shaming someone instead of doing their fucking job and critiquing the film for its plot and filmography instead of wardrobe and body sizes As a bigger woman and a women with big boobs to be honest they are huge its hard to wear things that smaller women can wear easily even the clothes Made from my size display things that I dont always want to be seen I remember when I turned like 15 I would just go out in a bathing suit and people were always commenting on my breasts men and woman like I would post on instagram and snapchat and people would literally say things about them and it was awkward like the conversation “am I showing off my boobs or do I just have big boobs” is so real and annoying and I think its disrespectful to belittle someones crafts to something they cant change about themselves espeically sense you are supposed to be critiquing a film and the first thing you go for is the actor who has is just there to tell a story whether Amandla picked her outfit or not doesn't give you a right to just body shame someone especially in order to not promote a film it just doesn't make sense and its gross and maybe you just suck at your job if you choose to take cheap shots at people and not respect any push back or resppnse when we see you sexualizing soemone for no reason This whole situation makes me think of euphoria for so many reasons the a24 connection the way people dont sexualize the men in euphoria who go naked as much as the women they way Sydney Sweeney gets sexualized and ripped apart from showing her body but most men are shirtless and praised or awarded sexiest men alive its mysogynist and gross and this interviewer should be ashsamed of themselves. I love Amandla stenberg this movie is amazing its funny it plays on how teenagers act this day in age its not scary but its like a who done it type thing all of the actors and actresses had stellar performances and I feel like a lot of people will be able to relate to it. And critics please take your insecurities and judgement of female bodies out of your reviews about media its not needed and its innapropriate. Thanks for lsitening. Go see bodies bodies bodies out in theaters now! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/al4s/message

There's so much more to the Ween world than just Ween, and this episode is the first in a new series about all the various Ween side gigs and solo projects. To kick things off, we're diving deep into Claude Coleman's solo project Amandla. Claude got his start in music as a teenager back in the 80's with a band called Skunk, and has played in a myriad of bands and projects, most famously as the drummer for Ween, but also in Eagles of Death Metal, Chocolate Genius, with Angelo Moore in Brand New Step, just to name a few. His drumming skills are near mythical, but what many don't realize is that Claude is a multi-instrumentalist, and is nearly as comfortable on a guitar or bass as he is on his kit. He also is one helluva songwriter, and this is where this episode comes in! You see, Claude also has his own solo project, Amandla, where he literally IS the band. For Amandla, Claude does it all, with just a smattering of help from various musicians. For this episode, we talk about how Amandla got started, with songs written as far back as the late 80's, to the “formation” of the band in ‘99, when Claude finally got access to a quality studio, as well as the impact his accident had on his solo work. We then talk about each of his three solo albums, Falling Along (2001), Full Catastrophe (2006), and the more recent Laughing Hearts (2018). Yes, there's been some time between each one, but Claude puts a lot of work into Amandla, and the results are definitely worth listening to! I don't want to say too much here because you really should listen to the episode! Enjoy! PS: We did a lot of research for this episode, and didn't come up with all this shit on our own. Farid Abdulhamid Mohamed, a member of Group for research and Initiative For The Liberation of Africa in Toronto, shares some important context to current Ethiopia conflict. In this exchange we hear the current events in Ethiopia's north, Tigray region, being contextualized, dating back to the origins of the "ethnic" federalist state of Ethiopia, the conflicts surrounding that and the recent neoliberal policies of the current Abiy Ahmed government, as well as the cancelation of regional elections in 2020, placed in context. This episode of AIAC Talk is a replay of the launch of issue 78 of Amandla! magazine, a progressive South African publication devoted to advancing radical left perspectives for social transformation. Since 2020, Africa Is a Country has been fortunate to be in partnership with Amandla! and is pleased to expand the range of content shared across both publications. The issue was published on the eve of South Africa's local government elections, which happened on November 1. While South Africa's political class has run out of ideas to address the manifold crises afflicting the country's municipalities, this issue looks at the many ideas for change amongst South Africa's progressive forces, as well as the organizers carrying out some of them. At the launch, Amandla! editorial collective member Shaeera Kalla sat down with issue contributor Ayabonga Cawe for a wide-ranging conversation about municipal decay and what can be done about it. To read the whole issue, download your copy https://aidc.org.za/download/amandla-78/ (here).
To face the worsening political, social and ecological crisis before us (that most acutely affects the poor and working-class), requires effective and coordinated action from South Africa's progressive forces. What should be the vehicle for this? As Niall Reddy https://africasacountry.com/2021/04/south-africas-left-needs-a-new-party (recently wrote) (his was the inaugural post in a https://africasacountry.com/tag/amandla-magazine (series of republications), as part of Africa Is a Country's partnership with the South African Left publication, http://aidc.org.za/amandla-media/ (Amandla)), “Social strains look set to keep accumulating. But assuming that any crisis they produce will automatically redound to the Left's benefit would be folly. That will only happen if we have the political vision and the organizational capacity to ensure that class becomes the fault line of social polarization. And for that, we need to face up to the challenge of constructing a new party.” In this week's AIAC Talk, we're joined by Niall, Mazibuko Jara and Tasneem Essop to discuss and debate the question of whether South Africa's left needs a new party. Some are not convinced – as https://www.newframe.com/the-rising-threat-of-political-gangsterism/ (this editorial of South African publication New Frame claims), “Party politics as a whole is an expression of the failures of the past quarter of a century and carries no possibility of a viable way forward, let alone any emancipatory prospects.” Instead, “a Left that could find a way out of the gathering crisis would need to be rooted in genuinely popular organisations, grounded in democratic practices, able to speak to the lived experience of the escalating social and political crisis and directly articulated to actual, existing struggles – from workplaces to communities and campuses.” Or, should we be persuaded by AIAC Talk co-host Sean Jacobs, who, claiming that South Africa needs democratic socialism, https://africasacountry.com/2019/05/why-south-africa-needs-a-democratic-socialism (wrote with Benjamin Fogel that), “Like it or not the majority of South Africans believe in democracy. Dismissing their belief as false consciousness and elections—which so many fought and died for—as a mere trick of the bourgeoisie, insults our struggle. Any future left project needs to begin with the premise that 1994 marked a victory for democracy and progressive forces, something that should be built upon rather than rejected or dismissed.” Niall Reddy, from South Africa, is a doctoral student in sociology at New York University, Tasneem Essop is a researcher at the Society, Work and Politics Institute (SWOP) at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, and Mazibuko Khanyiso Jara is an activist, trainer and popular educator and a former national spokesperson of the South African Communist Party also serving on the Amandla editorial collective.
