A new trial is starting this summer, as part of a programme to develop a vaccine for people against bird flu. 3000 volunteers are needed from the UK to take part, and 1000 in the USA. Researchers at the National Institute for Health and Care Research are hoping that poultry workers might take part.A new report warns that UK farming's reliance on imported fertiliser and minerals, puts it at risk in times of geopolitical stress. Analysis, published by the National Preparedness Commission, highlights the fragility of global supply chains on which UK agriculture depends.Fuel and fertiliser costs are soaring because of disruption caused by the war in the Middle East. That's having a big impact on farmers and it's also putting pressure on food prices as MPs on the Environment Food and Rural Affairs select committee have been hearing. They were told that food prices were 40% higher than before Covid and that the food supply chain needed urgent government support with fuel costs. We visit a field trial of a gene-edited barley which contains higher levels of fat. Scientists believe this will make it a more efficient livestock feed, and could also reduce methane emissions by making it more digestible.Thatching is becoming more of a challenge due to issues with some of the materials. Supplies of the right sort of wheat straw can be unpredictable and the hazel spars used to attach the thatch to the roof now have to be imported from Eastern Europe. To kick start interest in growing more locally a ‘summit' of thatchers, farmers and plant scientists was held this week in Suffolk.Presenter = Charlotte Smith Producer = Rebecca Rooney

Broadcast from KSQD, Santa Cruz on 4-23-2026: Dr. Dawn highlights ARPA-H-funded breakthroughs: Duke researchers created injections enabling cartilage cells to divide and remodel bone, UC Boulder developed intermittent-burst delivery of a repurposed drug that reversed rabbit arthritis in 4-8 weeks, and Columbia printed a living 3D knee using stem cells on biodegradable scaffolding. She notes the agency's budget was cut by $945 million despite requiring human trials within 18 months of funding. A cord blood study across 200 countries links phthalates—found in food packaging, vinyl flooring, shampoos, and toys—to placental disruption and premature birth. Dr. Dawn warns that removing specific chemicals just leads to untested replacements, and urges avoiding microwaving in plastic. An emailer asks about microbiome and exercise motivation. Dr. Dawn describes research showing Veillonella atypica bacteria eat lactate produced during exercise and trigger dopamine production via the vagus nerve, creating a reward loop. Bred "super-runner" mice ran three times longer than average, but antibiotics reduced their running by 21%, implicating microbiome involvement. Dr. Dawn expands on cortisol dynamics: levels should rise gradually from 3 a.m., spike threefold at waking to synchronize hormones, then decline throughout the day. Chronic stress keeps cortisol elevated, while burnout from sustained overproduction eventually exhausts the adrenals and disrupts circadian rhythm, requiring 6-12 months to restore. An emailer asks about food-based detoxification for skin and inflammation. Dr. Dawn explains that plant bioflavonoids—originally insecticides—trigger enzyme production that also breaks down synthetic pollutants, with sulfur-containing vegetables (crucifers, onions, garlic) particularly important. Colorful fruits and vegetables scavenge free radicals that damage DNA and collagen. Dr. Dawn explores red and near-infrared light therapy (600-1100nm), which boosts ATP production by energizing cytochrome c oxidase in mitochondria. The FDA approved a device for dry macular degeneration, and red light is recommended for chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis. She notes modern buildings filter these wavelengths, potentially starving us of light our bodies evolved to need. Dr. Dawn shares research on unsupervised childhood play, citing psychologist Peter Gray's finding that independent play develops internal locus of control—the belief you can influence outcomes. such as youth anxiety and depression, as children no longer learn to self-soothe through tolerating boredom.

Breaking Down the Biggest Breeding Myths Breeders Face and how finding a way to Move Forward In this episode of Bred to Perfection podcast, hosts Kenny Troiano and Frank Bradley sits down with Douglas Bruce for a candid, wide-ranging conversation on breeding, education, and the growing problem of misinformation in the gamefowl community. Together, they explore how they first connected through their shared commitment to accurate inbreeding practices and discuss their journeys as writers, educators, and mentors. From publishing articles and building educational platforms to managing overwhelming mentorship requests, they pull back the curtain on what it really means to teach in a space flooded with constant noise. The discussion takes a critical turn as they address the biggest threats facing breeders today—especially the rise of social media "experts," the spread of bad information, plagiarism, scams, and the dangerous culture of illegal exposure. They challenge common but flawed practices like chasing bloodline names and percentages, constantly adding new blood, breeding unproven stags, and trying to manage too many lines at once. Instead, Kenny and Douglas emphasize the fundamentals: disciplined selection, maintaining true families, proper conditioning and nutrition, and the importance of record-keeping. They also break down the myth of "refreshing blood," explaining how genetic recombination actually changes a family rather than restoring it. This episode is a must-listen for breeders who want to move beyond hype and shortcuts, and focus on building high-quality strains through proven principles, collaboration, and education that truly serves the community. #Gamefowl #GamefowlBreeding #PoultryBreeding #BreedingExcellence #SelectiveBreeding #GeneticsMatters #BreedingTruth #BloodlineMyths #BreedersLife #FarmLife #AnimalBreeding #EducationMatters Make sure to follow and watch our future shows. The Watership Down Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 20, 2026 9:16

50: Chapter 48. Dea ex Machina This episode is scripted by John Ruths and Newell Fisher. This is the only Chapter in WD written from a human perspective. The phrase "Deus ex Machina" means "the god in the machine" In a story, it signifies a highly unlikely event that resolves an issue, saves someone and provides a happy conclusion. However...this chapter is called DEA ex Machina, meaning the "Goddess in the Machine". When we read the beginning of the chapter and we see the name "Lucy", we know that she must be the "Dea ex Machina". The pre-chapter quote is from the poem, Fern Hill by Dylan Thomas. It is about an idyllic childhood spent on a farm. It is such a childhood that, arguably, saves Hazel. We begin with Lucy, the farm girl from Nuthanger.  It's early and she's just waking up.  When we hear about the possibility of a dog barking, we can link it to when the farm dog was alerted and broke away as he tore off after Dandelion.  Lucy hears a "sharp sound" and it's a squealing.  This gets Lucy up to see what the source of the sound is.  Thinking it's most likely a rat, Lucy sees that it's actually a rabbit! Lucy has a brief confrontation with Tab, one of the farm's resident cats.  She takes hold of the rabbit that we know to be our very own Hazel. Just as with the adults at the farm, it's interesting how Adams lays out how she speaks English, reflecting her Hampshire accent. Hazel in her arms, Lucy encounters her father.  He explains in his own way that to keep a wild rabbit in a hutch is a death sentence.  Her father also defends what the farm cat was doing; and in reality, he's quite right.  Her father asks Lucy to hand over Hazel.  We the reader know what this means. Lucy cries.  She knows her father is right but she's understandably upset.  Lucy wins out. She wants to show the rabbit to the visiting doctor.  Lucy goes upstairs, temporarily places Hazel in a drawer, gets some "cloze" on, and will soon meet the doctor.   The dog is back, spotted coming up the lane by the doctor, and we now know that it is a Black Labrador.  He's clearly been in a fight.  If nothing else, we know that General Woundwort did fight back, given the dog's leg bite and scratched nose.  We also learn, in passing, that the dog's name is Bob. The doctor, whose name interestingly is Adams, sees Lucy's mother first and thinks he'll have time to look at Hazel. Hazel is given an impromptu physical exam.  While Adams is a fan of providing us with multiple points of view, we don't get Hazel's thoughts at all. In this one chapter he is portrayed as humans see him: a dumb animal.  The doctor acknowledges his wounded leg which he received right there at the farm, a recent cat scratch, and reinforces for Lucy that this rabbit cannot live in a hutch.   The doctor makes an offer.  Lucy can go with him on his next house call and Hazel can be dropped off in a location along the way. Luckily for him, Hazel is dropped off on the single track road that lies to the west of WD, on the ridge between it and Hare Warren Down. The just dropped off Hazel seems to have gone temporarily tharn but comes to himself after about half a minute and quickly gets away.  As he departs, the doctor confirms his leg wound.  Of course, we readers already know this.  As Hazel is never named in this chapter, it simply confirms again who this rabbit is.   The doctor states "he could perfectly well live for years" and that seems quite hopeful.  This 'rabbit' has certainly earned this in our eyes. And it will prove to be the case so even the doctor's observation is foreshadowing in a good way. Funnily enough the chapter ends with the Doctor making a reference to the song "Born and Bred in a Briar Patch" from the 1946 Disney movie "Song of the South". And so our brief foray into the human world ends.

Episode 571: Bernie Howlett - The horseman who rode, trained and bred Group 1 winners

John Tapp Racing

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 17, 2026 65:54

With another edition of the historic Sydney Cup coming up on April 11th, it seems an appropriate time to catch up with a man who won it twice as a jockey in 1959 and 1961. Bernie Howlett's riding career lasted only seven or eight years but was followed by a long innings as a successful trainer. In more recent times Bernie has earned recognition as a very astute breeder of horses. In fact he's one of a chosen few to have ridden, trained and bred Gr 1 winners. He's now a healthy eighty eight year old, living in Canberra and content to reflect  on his very rewarding life in racing. Bernie does us the honour of joining this week's podcast to take us on a trip down memory lane.  He brings us up to date on plans for his future in racing. Bernie goes right back to childhood days in Tamworth and many trips to local race meetings with his dad Jack.  He acknowledges the deeds of older brother Arthur, himself a talented jockey and trainer. Bernie recalls the early tuition he received from legendary country trainer Arthur Gore and his apprenticeship to Eric Flett at Manilla. The veteran recalls his first ride in a race at Quirindi and his first win at Barraba. With ten bush winners under his belt Bernie made the decision to seek an apprenticeship in Sydney and literally knocked on the doors of several Randwick trainers. Finally a trainer called Frank McGrath agreed to sign him up.  Howlett reflects on his first city win on a hulking two year old owned by an AJC Committee member. He won another one on the same horse a few days later. He looks back on the thrill of being selected Dux of the AJC Apprentices School in the 1957/58 season.  Bernie says his golden run was halted by a nasty fall at Warwick Farm. Head injuries kept him out of the saddle for several months. He looks back on an association with dour stayer On Line which would lead him to a Sydney Cup win and a ride in the Melbourne Cup the following year. Bernie was to repeat his Sydney Cup win just two years later. This time he relegated an Australian turf idol into second place. He talks of the “return bout” with Tulloch in the Brisbane Cup less than three months later. This was to be the champion's swan song. Bernie remembers the support of several trainers who helped him along the way during his time in Sydney. The former jockey and trainer clearly recalls a second placing in the Caulfield Cup and the suspension that cost him the ride on the same horse in the Melbourne Cup. He takes us back to 1964 and his low key start as a trainer. Bernie reflects on a fruitful decade training out of Kembla Grange during which time his only Gr 1 winner came along. He makes mention of some other smart horses he got to train.  The veteran pays tribute to several talented young riders to spend time under his tutelage. He talks of his keen interest in the breeding of thoroughbreds and the colt destined to give him Gr 1 success in another phase of his career. Bernie is justifiably proud of his contribution to the Australian population- 6 daughters, 1 son and 14 grandchildren. Great to catch up with a man who achieved the rare distinction of riding, training and breeding Gr 1 winners.

The 4-year-old son of More Than Ready, campaigned by Victory Racing Partners, broke his maiden on second asking in an $84,000 Gulfstream Park MSW at 3. After his win in a $127,000 allowance at Ellis Park, he would only compete at the stakes level. His first black type start was in graded stakes company winning the G3 Manila S. at Belmont Park, defeating a deep field consisting entirely of graded stakes winners and stakes winners. He followed up that victory with a third in the G2 National Museum Racing Hall of Fame S., behind eventual G1 winner Carl Spackler (IRE). More Than Looks followed that race up with a win in the $200,000 Jefferson Cup S. at Churchill Downs by 2 3/4 lengths. He earned the first of his four triple-digit Beyer -101- in this win.Returning to the races at four, More Than Looks ran exclusively in G1 company. His first two starts of 2024 resulted in game second place finishes in the G1 Fourstardave H. at Saratoga and G1 Turf Mile S. at Keeneland, earning a 100 Beyer for his effort in the Turf Mile. Those two races set him up perfectly for an impressive run in the G1 Breeders' Cup Mile, where he defeated a competitive international field consisting of 8 G1 winners. With the Breeders' Cup victory he earned his highest career Beyer speed figure of 105 and brought his earnings to a total of $1,870,715.“He's an eye-catching horse that showed elite ability from day one,” said trainer Cherie DeVaux of More Than Looks. “His explosive turn of foot and competitive nature led to consistency at the highest level, and ultimately resulted in him becoming a Breeders' Cup Champion.”Bred by Hinkle Farms, More Than Looks hails from the female family of multiple G1 winner Critical Eye. His black type winning dam, Ladies' Privilege - a $575,000 Keeneland November purchase, by Harlan's Holiday, is a full sister to multiple graded stakes winner Takeover Target.More Than Looks' sire More Than Ready is a leading sire of Breeders' Cup winners and wins, with 7 individual winners accumulating 8 wins. Bred by Rodney J. Amy Rutherford on Smooths, Bred-By Success and Preservation Breeding [caption id="attachment_14897" align="alignleft" width="961"] Amy Rutherford winning Best Bred By Exhibitor at AKC National Championship with Wager.[/caption] Today's episode brings you a rare conversation with someone who does not say yes to interviews very often. Amy Rutherford joined host Laura Reeves for a holiday visit and the timing could not be better, fresh off her Best Bred-By Exhibitor win at the AKC National Championship with her Smooth Fox Terrier, Wager. For breeders, exhibitors, and dog show fans, this conversation delivers real insight into what it takes to build a program that lasts. From a childhood dog show moment to a lifetime in terriers [caption id="attachment_14896" align="alignleft" width="356"] Rutherford with one of her foundation Smooth Fox Terriers.[/caption] Amy's path started early. Her parents were horse people who also kept Australian Shepherds before they were AKC recognized. A winter trip turned into a defining moment when the family got snowed in and visited an AKC dog show. From the stands, young Amy watched Smooth Fox Terriers in the ring and knew she wanted that life. The journey was not immediate. Her first breed was Airedales, which taught hard lessons about grooming, structure, and realistic expectations. Eventually, she saved money and purchased Smooth Fox Terrier puppies that both finished quickly and became group winners. That early success did more than build confidence. It created a foundation and one of those early bitches still anchors the pedigree behind her dogs today. The handler apprenticeship that built a career Amy's handling career developed the way the best ones often do, through years of real work. She spent summers helping professionals and then committed to a full apprenticeship with Eddie and Leslie Boyes. She stayed for nine years, learning the daily realities of conditioning, presentation, animal husbandry, trimming and the logistics that define show life. [caption id="attachment_14894" align="alignright" width="278"] Rutherford showing Dover, Ch. Aimhi Type Cast, at Westminster Kennel Club.[/caption] That apprenticeship is a major takeaway for anyone interested in becoming a professional handler. Amy explains that experience builds skill and it builds a network. When she went out on her own, she had the credibility and connections that make the difference between surviving and thriving. Showing different breeds and winning with controversial dogs One of the most valuable parts of this episode is Amy's honest discussion about stepping into breeds that are not part of your original comfort zone. She moved from Smooth Fox [caption id="attachment_14898" align="alignleft" width="396"] Rutherford showing Standard Poodle, Dino, GCH. Del Zarzoso Salvame From Afterglow[/caption] Terriers into coated breeds including a Portugese Water Dog and a Standard Poodle import....

Elaine opens up about growing up Puerto Rican in the 1980s in Brownsville, Brooklyn, raised in low income housing while surrounded by addiction, poverty, and instability. We talk about being sent to Puerto Rico as a form of punishment, an experience many Latino kids can relate to, and how those summers on the island shaped her identity and perspective. Elaine reflects on becoming a socially impactful storyteller who centers voices and communities that are rarely seen or heard on screen. Elaine began her acting career in the 1990s, appearing in projects like Donnie Brasco, The Sopranos, and lending her voice as Belle the Octopus on Dora the Explorer for 23 episodes. We also talk about her acclaimed film Princess Cut, now streaming on HBO Max, and the importance of telling authentic Latino stories without compromise. Make sure to stream Elaine Del Valle’s powerful new film Brownsville Bred, available now on Amazon Prime Video.
