50: Chapter 48. Dea ex Machina This episode is scripted by John Ruths and Newell Fisher. This is the only Chapter in WD written from a human perspective. The phrase "Deus ex Machina" means "the god in the machine" In a story, it signifies a highly unlikely event that resolves an issue, saves someone and provides a happy conclusion. However...this chapter is called DEA ex Machina, meaning the "Goddess in the Machine". When we read the beginning of the chapter and we see the name "Lucy", we know that she must be the "Dea ex Machina". The pre-chapter quote is from the poem, Fern Hill by Dylan Thomas. It is about an idyllic childhood spent on a farm. It is such a childhood that, arguably, saves Hazel. We begin with Lucy, the farm girl from Nuthanger. It's early and she's just waking up. When we hear about the possibility of a dog barking, we can link it to when the farm dog was alerted and broke away as he tore off after Dandelion. Lucy hears a "sharp sound" and it's a squealing. This gets Lucy up to see what the source of the sound is. Thinking it's most likely a rat, Lucy sees that it's actually a rabbit! Lucy has a brief confrontation with Tab, one of the farm's resident cats. She takes hold of the rabbit that we know to be our very own Hazel. Just as with the adults at the farm, it's interesting how Adams lays out how she speaks English, reflecting her Hampshire accent. Hazel in her arms, Lucy encounters her father. He explains in his own way that to keep a wild rabbit in a hutch is a death sentence. Her father also defends what the farm cat was doing; and in reality, he's quite right. Her father asks Lucy to hand over Hazel. We the reader know what this means. Lucy cries. She knows her father is right but she's understandably upset. Lucy wins out. She wants to show the rabbit to the visiting doctor. Lucy goes upstairs, temporarily places Hazel in a drawer, gets some "cloze" on, and will soon meet the doctor. The dog is back, spotted coming up the lane by the doctor, and we now know that it is a Black Labrador. He's clearly been in a fight. If nothing else, we know that General Woundwort did fight back, given the dog's leg bite and scratched nose. We also learn, in passing, that the dog's name is Bob. The doctor, whose name interestingly is Adams, sees Lucy's mother first and thinks he'll have time to look at Hazel. Hazel is given an impromptu physical exam. While Adams is a fan of providing us with multiple points of view, we don't get Hazel's thoughts at all. In this one chapter he is portrayed as humans see him: a dumb animal. The doctor acknowledges his wounded leg which he received right there at the farm, a recent cat scratch, and reinforces for Lucy that this rabbit cannot live in a hutch. The doctor makes an offer. Lucy can go with him on his next house call and Hazel can be dropped off in a location along the way. Luckily for him, Hazel is dropped off on the single track road that lies to the west of WD, on the ridge between it and Hare Warren Down. The just dropped off Hazel seems to have gone temporarily tharn but comes to himself after about half a minute and quickly gets away. As he departs, the doctor confirms his leg wound. Of course, we readers already know this. As Hazel is never named in this chapter, it simply confirms again who this rabbit is. The doctor states "he could perfectly well live for years" and that seems quite hopeful. This 'rabbit' has certainly earned this in our eyes. And it will prove to be the case so even the doctor's observation is foreshadowing in a good way. Funnily enough the chapter ends with the Doctor making a reference to the song "Born and Bred in a Briar Patch" from the 1946 Disney movie "Song of the South". And so our brief foray into the human world ends.

Gereben Zita énekesnő, dalszerző Catch the Feeling címmel adta ki negyedik albumát, s amelyet április 15-én a Budapest Music Center – Opus Jazz Clubban mutatnak be élőben. A Sláger FM-en minden este 22 órakor a kultúráé a főszerep S. The 4-year-old son of More Than Ready, campaigned by Victory Racing Partners, broke his maiden on second asking in an $84,000 Gulfstream Park MSW at 3. After his win in a $127,000 allowance at Ellis Park, he would only compete at the stakes level. His first black type start was in graded stakes company winning the G3 Manila S. at Belmont Park, defeating a deep field consisting entirely of graded stakes winners and stakes winners. He followed up that victory with a third in the G2 National Museum Racing Hall of Fame S., behind eventual G1 winner Carl Spackler (IRE). More Than Looks followed that race up with a win in the $200,000 Jefferson Cup S. at Churchill Downs by 2 3/4 lengths. He earned the first of his four triple-digit Beyer -101- in this win.Returning to the races at four, More Than Looks ran exclusively in G1 company. His first two starts of 2024 resulted in game second place finishes in the G1 Fourstardave H. at Saratoga and G1 Turf Mile S. at Keeneland, earning a 100 Beyer for his effort in the Turf Mile. Those two races set him up perfectly for an impressive run in the G1 Breeders' Cup Mile, where he defeated a competitive international field consisting of 8 G1 winners. With the Breeders' Cup victory he earned his highest career Beyer speed figure of 105 and brought his earnings to a total of $1,870,715.“He's an eye-catching horse that showed elite ability from day one,” said trainer Cherie DeVaux of More Than Looks. “His explosive turn of foot and competitive nature led to consistency at the highest level, and ultimately resulted in him becoming a Breeders' Cup Champion.”Bred by Hinkle Farms, More Than Looks hails from the female family of multiple G1 winner Critical Eye. His black type winning dam, Ladies' Privilege - a $575,000 Keeneland November purchase, by Harlan's Holiday, is a full sister to multiple graded stakes winner Takeover Target.More Than Looks' sire More Than Ready is a leading sire of Breeders' Cup winners and wins, with 7 individual winners accumulating 8 wins. An international success, More Than Ready has sired nearly a 120 black type winners, almost 50 graded stakes winners and 13 G1 winners.
Bred in Kentucky by Joe R. Peacock, Sr. and Joe R. Peacock, Jr., Senor Buscador retires from racing with $12,944,427 in earnings and was trained by Todd Fincher.Breaking his maiden at two on debut by 2 1/2 lengths, Senor Buscador then jumped straight into stakes company winning the $220,000 Remington Springboard Mile by 5 3/4 lengths. That effort garnered him a 93 Beyer as a two-year-old, the second highest Beyer of any two-year-old colt at a mile in 2020.The black type success continued at 4, with a win in the G3 Ack Ack S. at Churchill Downs. In his first start of 2023 he returned to the winner's circle in the Curribot H., defeating the field by 4 lengths. His success continued with a win in the G2 San Diego at Del Mar earning a 101 Beyer, defeating G1 winners Slow Down Andy, Defunded, Royal Ship and Tripoli. Senor Buscador earned a G1 placing in the Awesome Again and closed out the year with second place in the G2 Cigar Mile.He got off to fast start in 2024 with a close second in the G1 Pegasus World Cup, before traveling to Saudi Arabia where he made splash winning the $20 million G1 Saudi Cup. Defeating a deep field including G1 winners National Treasure, White Abarrio, Saudi Crown, Lemon Pop, and Ushba Tesoro (JPN), Senor Buscador set a new stakes record - 1:49.50. His next start was in the UAE, where he finished third in the G1 Dubai World Cup, contributing to his being the leading North American earner in 2024. He retires with four triple-digit Beyers to his credit - 105, 103, 101, 101.Out of multiple stakes winner Rose's Desert, Senor Buscador is half to graded stakes winner and multiple stakes winner Runaway Ghost. Rose's Desert also produced stakes winners Our Iris Rose and Sheriff Brown. His sire, Mineshaft, has produced 8 G1 winners including Dialed In, himself a sire of 3 G1 winners and 29 black type winners. Mineshaft closed out 2024 as a top 5 sire.
Multiple G1 winner Raging Torrent retired from racing with seven wins and earnings of almost $1.8 million dollars with four triple-digit Beyers including an impressive win on the international stage in the G2 Godolphin Mile at Meydan. Bred by Rodney J. Winkler and Alfonso Mazetti, Raging Torrent won at first asking in his two-year-old debut at Del Mar with a troubled trip including the jockey losing his crop in the stretch, but still drew off by over two lengths. He went on to be graded stakes placed at two.At three, he came into his own winning an allowance at Churchill Downs, where he dominated the field with an 8 1/4 length victory. This began a streak of races where he won six of his next seven starts. During that span, Raging Torrent won his first stakes in the Maxfield S. at Churchill Downs and won his graded stakes debut in the G2 Pat O'Brien at Del Mar against older horses with a 104 Beyer. He fought back in the stretch to defeat a talented field of runners, including G1 winners The Chosen Vron and Senor Buscador. He capped his three-year-old season with his first grade one victory in the G1 Malibu S. at Santa Anita defeating G1 Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan.An international field in the $1,000,000 G2 Godolphin Mile set the stage for Raging Torrent's four-year-old campaign for new owners Yuesheng Zhang and Craig Dado. He was never in doubt, jumping out to an early lead and drawing away for an easy 3 ½ length victory. Returning to the U.S., he led the entire way yet again in his G1 Metropolitan Handicap victory, making easy work of a field that included champion two-year-old Fierceness and G1 Breeder's Cup Classic winner White Abarrio with a career best 106 Beyer.

Amy Rutherford on Smooths, Bred-By Success and Preservation Breeding [caption id="attachment_14897" align="alignleft" width="961"] Amy Rutherford winning Best Bred By Exhibitor at AKC National Championship with Wager.[/caption] Today's episode brings you a rare conversation with someone who does not say yes to interviews very often. Amy Rutherford joined host Laura Reeves for a holiday visit and the timing could not be better, fresh off her Best Bred-By Exhibitor win at the AKC National Championship with her Smooth Fox Terrier, Wager. For breeders, exhibitors, and dog show fans, this conversation delivers real insight into what it takes to build a program that lasts. From a childhood dog show moment to a lifetime in terriers [caption id="attachment_14896" align="alignleft" width="356"] Rutherford with one of her foundation Smooth Fox Terriers.[/caption] Amy's path started early. Her parents were horse people who also kept Australian Shepherds before they were AKC recognized. A winter trip turned into a defining moment when the family got snowed in and visited an AKC dog show. From the stands, young Amy watched Smooth Fox Terriers in the ring and knew she wanted that life. The journey was not immediate. Her first breed was Airedales, which taught hard lessons about grooming, structure, and realistic expectations. Eventually, she saved money and purchased Smooth Fox Terrier puppies that both finished quickly and became group winners. That early success did more than build confidence. It created a foundation and one of those early bitches still anchors the pedigree behind her dogs today. The handler apprenticeship that built a career Amy's handling career developed the way the best ones often do, through years of real work. She spent summers helping professionals and then committed to a full apprenticeship with Eddie and Leslie Boyes. She stayed for nine years, learning the daily realities of conditioning, presentation, animal husbandry, trimming and the logistics that define show life. [caption id="attachment_14894" align="alignright" width="278"] Rutherford showing Dover, Ch. Aimhi Type Cast, at Westminster Kennel Club.[/caption] That apprenticeship is a major takeaway for anyone interested in becoming a professional handler. Amy explains that experience builds skill and it builds a network. When she went out on her own, she had the credibility and connections that make the difference between surviving and thriving. Showing different breeds and winning with controversial dogs One of the most valuable parts of this episode is Amy's honest discussion about stepping into breeds that are not part of your original comfort zone. She moved from Smooth Fox [caption id="attachment_14898" align="alignleft" width="396"] Rutherford showing Standard Poodle, Dino, GCH. Deb Fischer Reintroduces HAULS Act To Improve Agriculture Transportation Safety U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, has reintroduced the Haulers of Agriculture and Livestock Safety (HAULS) Act, legislation aimed at strengthening the transportation system that supports America's farmers, ranchers, and agricultural supply chains. The HAULS Act addresses longstanding challenges faced by agricultural and livestock haulers, particularly those related to federal hours-of-service (HOS) regulations. By modernizing these rules, the bill seeks to improve safety, flexibility, and efficiency across the agriculture transportation industry. Key Provisions of the HAULS Act The legislation includes several critical updates designed to better reflect real-world agricultural operations: Expanded Hours-of-Service Exemptions The HAULS Act would eliminate the requirement that agricultural and livestock HOS exemptions apply only during state-designated planting and harvesting seasons, allowing haulers greater flexibility year-round. Clearer Definition of Agricultural Commodities The bill amends and clarifies the definition of “agricultural commodities” based on feedback from agriculture and livestock organizations, reducing confusion and improving regulatory consistency. Extended 150 Air-Mile HOS Exemption Building on a previous Fischer provision already signed into law, the HAULS Act authorizes a 150 air-mile exemption from HOS requirements on the destination side of a haul, giving agricultural commodity haulers more operational flexibility when delivering goods. A Critical Tool for Creating a Successful Strain In this episode, we dive deep into the world of test matings, an essential practice for any breeder involved in chickens and gamefowl, poultry of all kinds, livestock, or other species with valuable genetic traits. Test matings are a vital tool for evaluating the genetic makeup of animals and making informed decisions about breeding practices. Without this knowledge, breeders risk making choices based on assumptions, which can hinder progress, especially when developing new strains or improving existing ones. We'll explore the key functions of test matings, from genetic evaluation and identifying hidden traits to uncovering defects, disease carriers, and beneficial variations. Learn how test matings allow breeders to maintain healthy strains, and make well-informed decisions for future generations. Additionally, we discuss the critical role of progeny testing in confirming the genetic value of breeding stock, as well as the importance of backcrossing for genetic purification. We also touch on the potential pitfalls breeders may face in test mating practices and how to avoid them to ensure long-term genetic health. Whether you're just starting out or managing an established strain, this episode covers everything you need to know about the importance of test matings and how they can be leveraged to create a successful and genetically robust breeding program. The move came Saturday through an executive order. It directs both the Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission to form separate task forces, each charged with taking “all necessary and appropriate actions” to look into the food supply chain. That includes examining whether foreign ownership in food-related industries is driving up grocery prices or posing a national or economic security risk. In the order, Trump said anti-competitive behavior — especially by companies under foreign control — threatens the stability and affordability of America's food supply. He pointed to past settlements in which some companies paid millions to resolve price-fixing allegations. The administration, he said, intends to determine whether such practices are raising the cost of living for Americans and whether they pose any security concerns. The President also said that if Attorney General Pam Bondi uncovers criminal collusion, the Justice Department could pursue criminal charges, including convening grand juries. The task forces are required to provide their first updates to Congress within 180 days, and again within the first year of the investigation. This executive order follows Trump's earlier directive for the DOJ to immediately investigate alleged collusion and price manipulation among U.S. meatpackers. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins and Attorney General Bondi voiced support for the effort, even as reports surfaced that a previous DOJ probe into beef-packer concentration, launched in 2020, ended without charges. According to the Wall Street Journal, Rollins, along with trade adviser Peter Navarro and Homeland Security Adviser Stephen Miller, has recently met with Trump to discuss rising beef prices. In this episode, we talk about the six foundational principles of strain creation in animal breeding, crucial knowledge for anyone serious about starting or improving a breeding program. Whether you're breeding birds, livestock, or other animals, understanding these principles can help you develop strains that not only represent their breed, but are genetically strong, healthy, and productive. We start by giving a brief recap of the six principles, Consolidation, Maximization, Fixation, Duplication, Stabilization, and Isolation—and explain how they work together to form the backbone of a successful breeding program. The Principle of Consolidation: Learn how outcrossing and crossbreeding can increase genetic diversity and introduce desirable traits, but if used improperly, it can weaken your strain. The Principle of Maximization: Discover the power of selective breeding and how to amplify specific traits to continuously improve your strain. The Principle of Fixation: Explore how inbreeding and line-breeding can lock in desirable traits for consistency and reliability. The Principle of Duplication: Understand the importance of creating a strain that is predictable and uniform across generations. The Principle of Stabilization: Find out how to maintain the integrity of your strain, while improving key traits through careful selection and culling. The Principle of Isolation: Learn how to safeguard your strain from contamination, disease, and outside genetic influences to maintain purity and health. We encourage you to put these principles into practice in your own breeding program, whether you're starting from scratch or looking to refine an existing strain. Tune in to discover how mastering these principles can elevate your breeding efforts. This episode is packed with actionable advice, so be sure to grab a notebook and take notes! "It was a really surreal experience because I didn't know what to expect from a tiger farm. I've been in a lot of industrial farms of other animals. I sort of thought to myself, 'surely it can't be, it can't be actually a farm like what we see, how we raise pigs and chickens and cows.' But it was it was literally a factory farm - a prison, essentially just row after row after row of tiger." - Amy Jones There are moments when a single photograph can change how we see the world. For photojournalist Amy Jones that moment came inside a dark, airless building on the border of Thailand at a tiger farm. That's where she met Salamas, a 20-year-old tiger who had spent her entire life in a concrete cell. Bred over and over again for the tourist and medicine trades. Amy's photograph of Salamas, a tiger who was skin and bones pressing her head against a cold wall, has gone on to win some of the most prestigious awards in photography, and brought international attention to an industry that almost no one knew existed, the factory farming of tigers. This conversation is about the rescue of that tiger, about the power of visual storytelling and what it means to bear witness even when it breaks your heart.
