Why Our Birds Need Extra Attention at this Time of Year When do our birds require the utmost care and consideration? The answer is during the molt. This crucial period is marked by significant stress as birds undergo a complex process of feather renewal, muscle replenishment, and bone repair. Both cocks and hens experience this challenging phase, making it an essential aspect of their overall health. While many view molting as a negative phase, it actually presents an opportunity for improvement. As a breeder, it's vital to understand how to navigate the molt effectively and use it to your advantage. A common pitfall for breeders is failing to grasp the nuances of the molt, which can hinder efforts to create, improve, and maintain a robust strain. Proper management of the molt is crucial; neglecting this process can significantly impact the upcoming breeding season and the quality of offspring. Join us as we delve into the intricacies of the molting season and explore strategies for achieving optimal results. Make sure to follow and watch our future shows. We plan to dive deep into the world of breeding and genetics, nutrition and health management, and provide essential tips, so you too can create high quality strains. Whether you're breeding domestic chickens, gamefowl, or various types of livestock, this show is for you. Join us on Bred to Perfection Live, Friday's at 6pm PST or 9pm EST on YouTube, as we discuss the benefits of creating your own strain. See ya there! Have you ever wondered why your dog behaves the way they do, despite your best efforts to train them?In this episode, Lee Bridges and I explore how understanding your dog's breed history and natural instincts can completely change the way you see their behaviour. You'll discover why many of the behaviours we label as problems are often your dog trying to meet needs that modern life no longer fulfils, helping you build a happier, more balanced relationship together.Along the way we discuss:✔ What different dog breeds were originally bred to do✔ Why breed characteristics still influence behaviour today✔ The reasons behind barking, chewing, chasing and frustration✔ Why mental stimulation and scent work are just as important as exercise✔ How to better meet your dog's natural needs, whatever their breed or mixI hope this episode helps you understand your dog on a much deeper level and gives you practical ways to help them thrive, rather than simply trying to manage their behaviour.————————————————CONNECT WITH LEE BRIDGESPlay9:https://www.play9.co.ukInstagram:https://www.instagram.com/play9world————————————————

We hear from Paul, a retired woodsman from mid Suffolk. He has had three encounters with large cats, including one watching him through the bracken. He describes his own incidents and others he has heard. Paul explains his tree management work across the local countryside and considers how big cats would use woods and features of the landscape. Paul and Rick also discuss actions to get more evidence in Suffolk, including a ‘camera wall' being set up across a nature reserve on a farm.Words of the week: non-invasive study28 April 2026

A new trial is starting this summer, as part of a programme to develop a vaccine for people against bird flu. 3000 volunteers are needed from the UK to take part, and 1000 in the USA. Researchers at the National Institute for Health and Care Research are hoping that poultry workers might take part.A new report warns that UK farming's reliance on imported fertiliser and minerals, puts it at risk in times of geopolitical stress. Analysis, published by the National Preparedness Commission, highlights the fragility of global supply chains on which UK agriculture depends.Fuel and fertiliser costs are soaring because of disruption caused by the war in the Middle East. That's having a big impact on farmers and it's also putting pressure on food prices as MPs on the Environment Food and Rural Affairs select committee have been hearing. They were told that food prices were 40% higher than before Covid and that the food supply chain needed urgent government support with fuel costs. We visit a field trial of a gene-edited barley which contains higher levels of fat. Scientists believe this will make it a more efficient livestock feed, and could also reduce methane emissions by making it more digestible.Thatching is becoming more of a challenge due to issues with some of the materials. Supplies of the right sort of wheat straw can be unpredictable and the hazel spars used to attach the thatch to the roof now have to be imported from Eastern Europe. To kick start interest in growing more locally a ‘summit' of thatchers, farmers and plant scientists was held this week in Suffolk.Presenter = Charlotte Smith Producer = Rebecca Rooney
Broadcast from KSQD, Santa Cruz on 4-23-2026: Dr. Dawn highlights ARPA-H-funded breakthroughs: Duke researchers created injections enabling cartilage cells to divide and remodel bone, UC Boulder developed intermittent-burst delivery of a repurposed drug that reversed rabbit arthritis in 4-8 weeks, and Columbia printed a living 3D knee using stem cells on biodegradable scaffolding. She notes the agency's budget was cut by $945 million despite requiring human trials within 18 months of funding. A cord blood study across 200 countries links phthalates—found in food packaging, vinyl flooring, shampoos, and toys—to placental disruption and premature birth. Dr. Dawn warns that removing specific chemicals just leads to untested replacements, and urges avoiding microwaving in plastic. An emailer asks about microbiome and exercise motivation. Dr. Dawn describes research showing Veillonella atypica bacteria eat lactate produced during exercise and trigger dopamine production via the vagus nerve, creating a reward loop. Bred "super-runner" mice ran three times longer than average, but antibiotics reduced their running by 21%, implicating microbiome involvement. Dr. Dawn expands on cortisol dynamics: levels should rise gradually from 3 a.m., spike threefold at waking to synchronize hormones, then decline throughout the day. Chronic stress keeps cortisol elevated, while burnout from sustained overproduction eventually exhausts the adrenals and disrupts circadian rhythm, requiring 6-12 months to restore. An emailer asks about food-based detoxification for skin and inflammation. Dr. Dawn explains that plant bioflavonoids—originally insecticides—trigger enzyme production that also breaks down synthetic pollutants, with sulfur-containing vegetables (crucifers, onions, garlic) particularly important. Colorful fruits and vegetables scavenge free radicals that damage DNA and collagen. Dr. Dawn explores red and near-infrared light therapy (600-1100nm), which boosts ATP production by energizing cytochrome c oxidase in mitochondria. The FDA approved a device for dry macular degeneration, and red light is recommended for chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis. She notes modern buildings filter these wavelengths, potentially starving us of light our bodies evolved to need. Dr. Dawn shares research on unsupervised childhood play, citing psychologist Peter Gray's finding that independent play develops internal locus of control—the belief you can influence outcomes. such as youth anxiety and depression, as children no longer learn to self-soothe through tolerating boredom.

Breaking Down the Biggest Breeding Myths Breeders Face and how finding a way to Move Forward In this episode of Bred to Perfection podcast, hosts Kenny Troiano and Frank Bradley sits down with Douglas Bruce for a candid, wide-ranging conversation on breeding, education, and the growing problem of misinformation in the gamefowl community. Together, they explore how they first connected through their shared commitment to accurate inbreeding practices and discuss their journeys as writers, educators, and mentors. From publishing articles and building educational platforms to managing overwhelming mentorship requests, they pull back the curtain on what it really means to teach in a space flooded with constant noise. The discussion takes a critical turn as they address the biggest threats facing breeders today—especially the rise of social media "experts," the spread of bad information, plagiarism, scams, and the dangerous culture of illegal exposure. They challenge common but flawed practices like chasing bloodline names and percentages, constantly adding new blood, breeding unproven stags, and trying to manage too many lines at once. Instead, Kenny and Douglas emphasize the fundamentals: disciplined selection, maintaining true families, proper conditioning and nutrition, and the importance of record-keeping.
