It Happened Here (IHH) is a weekly true crime podcast from Ready Freddie Productions, presented by South African journalist Kate Thompson Davy. The creators of IHH intend this to be a true crime podcast that centres victims and survivors, that peers into the psychology at play, and scratches that crime and grime itch we all sometimes have. Having said that, we do not want to produce 'gore porn' or glorify the criminals we speak about. That is a guiding value of ours, as well as:  Sex work is work. My body, my choice. Trans and black lives matter. And f*ck your feminism if it isn’t intersectional.  If that doesn’t work for you, that’s your call (do better!), but this is not the podcast you are looking for. I’m sure we will fall short of these values at some point, because we’re all flawed and unlearning prejudices. Please do let us know when we go wrong (hello@readyfreddiepod.com), but also, please be gentle. Remember good hearts, bad moments. We are trying our best.  What listeners had to say: Marvelous ***** Jul 9, 2021, lilmamaeverts "This podcast is so amazing… from the podcasters voice to the way she tells the stories. Episode 2 had me in tears, but I felt the way she presented the case was so thoughtful. And I appreciate she doesn’t shy away from the tough subjects that NEED a light shine on them!" Right up there with the best ***** Jul 5, 2021, Millie Moopop's Mummy "Fab true crime podcast. I’ve never listened to much South African crime and find it fascinating. Subject matter is dealt with sensitively and the research has clearly been done with the utmost attention to detail. To top it off, the host has a voice born for podcasts! Can’t wait to see how this podcast develops." Get bonus content on Patreon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

IHHers, today's case is an interesting one. Firstly, Phindile Joseph Ntshongwana was not an anonymous guy before these crimes put him in the papers. In fact, he used to be a professional rugby player –and you know how South Africans feel about their rugby. The other reason this case got so much attention was that Phindile is a literal axe murderer who went on a week-long rampage in March 2011, murdering four people and attempting to kill at least two others. But there's a lot more to this case, in particular there's the question of “mad or bad?”. Phindile would claim that his terrible actions were the result of profound mental illness, opening up a whole psychological and legal can o' worms...Support the show: www.patreon.com/ithappenedhere SOURCES:https://www.sowetanlive.co.za/news/south-africa/2021-06-07-former-blue-bulls-player-turned-axe-murderer-fails-appeal-bid/https://www.iol.co.za/news/south-africa/kwazulu-natal/expert-flabbergasted-by-testimony-1720244https://www.news24.com/citypress/southafrica/news/from-teddy-bear-to-terminator-20110402http://www.saflii.org/za/other/ZAKZPHCRolls/2021/74.htmlhttps://mg.co.za/article/2013-04-18-accused-blue-bulls-axe-murderer-had-seizure/https://news.sky.com/story/former-rugby-player-in-court-over-axe-murders-10488883https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FK4aOVPzvFIhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjqRTyHMjA0https://www.news24.com/drum/News/phindile-ntshongwana-guilty-of-murder-20170728https://www.news24.com/News24/Ex-Blue-Bulls-players-gets-5x-life-for-axe-murders-20141219https://www.enca.com/axe-killer-unaware-actions-court-hearshttps://news.sky.com/story/former-rugby-player-in-court-over-axe-murders-10488883http://www.lawlibrary.co.za/notice/updates/2014/issue_16/recentjudgments_kzd.htmhttps://www.ofm.co.za/article/149451/Former-Blue-Bulls-rugby-player-back-in-court-for-murder Get bonus content on Patreon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

While my current investigation/research is taking a bit longer than normal, here's an interview I did with Yonela Sinqu, the communications officer at Sisonke, the National Sex Workers Movement in South Africa. We talk about why they advocate for decriminalisation (rather than legalisation), as well as getting into some of the discrimination and violence sex workers face. A study by the South African Media Research Council recently found that 71% of women sex workers said they had been exposed to physical violence and 58% said they had been raped. One in seven of the 3005 women surveyed reported being raped by a policeman. This puts sex workers at astronomically higher risk of violence, and then they must deal with stigma on top of that. My own personal belief is that sex work is work, and that those who work in the space deserve the same protections and rights as any other worker, as any other human.  For more, visit www.sweat.org.za. On April 30th, someone entered that room, dressed in the maroon trousers and oatmeal shirt of the Groote Schuur staff uniform, and took Zephany from her crib before disappearing, seemingly forever.https://www.patreon.com/ithappenedhereSOURCESMiche's book: https://www.amazon.com/Zephany-mothers-daughter-astonishing-story-ebook/dp/B07WFJDY3H2010 interview with the Nurses: https://www.iol.co.za/news/south-africa/search-for-daughter-never-ending-474075#.VP146CzsBskhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zephany_Nursehttps://soundcloud.com/nbpublishers/a-conversation-with-zephany-nurse-or-miche-solomonhttps://www.all4women.co.za/2212974/news/south-african-news/exclusive-miche-solomon-zephany-nurse-says-pandemic-shook-her-world-againhttps://www.bbc.com/news/stories-49825705https://www.enca.com/news/miche-solomon-i-didnt-know-if-should-cry-or-laughhttps://www.enca.com/news/she-really-took-good-care-me-miche-solomonhttps://www.independent.co.uk/news/what-is-it-that-makes-a-woman-want-to-steal-a-baby-the-abductor-s-profile-1287013.htmlhttps://www.iol.co.za/pretoria-news/zephany-to-mom-you-are-paying-a-price-for-the-cost-of-loving-me-30854807https://www.kidspot.com.au/lifestyle/entertainment/i-was-kidnapped-at-birth-then-found-my-secret-sister/news-story/1ba2124e14988d72098e09ca62151c05https://www.missingkids.org/content/dam/missingkids/pdfs/ForHealthCareProfessionals_10thEdition.pdfhttps://www.news24.com/news24/books/extract-zephany-you-think-you-know-a-person-especially-your-own-mother-right-20190816  https://www.news24.com/news24/SouthAfrica/News/i-know-she-took-me-miche-solomon-on-being-zephany-nurse-20190815https://www.thatslife.com.au/stolen-birth-dna-test-exposes-truthhttps://www.timeslive.co.za/news/south-africa/2019-08-15-my-biological-dad-is-a-lost-cause-zephany-nurse-reveals-in-new-book/https://www.timeslive.co.za/sunday-times/news/2019-08-18-betrayed-zephany-nurse-is-battling-to-trust-again/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zp9mjLptlTAInterview with Lavona and Michael  in 2015: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qccQwfbjyoIhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1670168/pdf/bmj00131-0010.pdf Get bonus content on Patreon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The President Hotel in Bantry Bay is a long way from the sweet and simple townhouses we've been lurking in recently. It has some 350 rooms and apartments, with tall palm trees positioned around a pool and the exterior painted in startling white just to lean into that Med look. On the 7th of June 2009, security guard Mark Benjamin is standing outside room 54 key in hand, with two others chomping at the bit to get inside. These men are Lester Penteni and Marshall Gobinca. The men had gone to the President Hotel in search of Judge Patrick Maqubela, who was leasing one of the luxury apartments and had been unreachable for a few days…. Twelve years later, the cause of Patrick's untimely demise remains a matter of debate. Back in 2005 the Shiraz complex in Stellenbosch had just been completed and the first set of tenants moved in, including 22-year-old student Inge Lotz. Inge was whip-smart, studying mathematics and stats at the University of Stellenbosch. She was a dedicated student who liked to stick to a schedule for her academic work, so when she wasn't answering her phone on the night of 16 March 2005, her mom assumed she was head down in a book. Inge's boyfriend Fred van der Vyver, however, was not as convinced. He'd been trying to reach Inge for hours. He calls a friend who lived nearby and sent him to check things out at Shiraz. There he'd find the savagely attacked body of Inge, kicking off a case that remains perplexing and unsolved today. SOURCES:'I have stopped searching for answers' - Inge Lotz's dad | News24'Inge has killed herself' | News24Freddie Boy The Untold Story – A book covering the widely publicised murder trial of Inge Lotz as viewed through the eyes of one of Fred van der Vyver lawyers.Fruit of a Poisoned Tree: https://www.amazon.com/Fruit-Poisoned-Tree-Antony-Altbeker/dp/1868423336Hammer an ‘unlikely' murder weapon in Van der Vyver case | News24Hawks chase new Inge Lotz murder leadhttps://www.iol.co.za/news/south-africa/students-boyfriend-lays-out-timeline-314986https://www.pressreader.com/south-africa/weekend-argus-saturday-edition/20110827/281788510763001Unresolved 2005 murder of 22 year old student Inge Lotz : UnresolvedMysteriesInge and Fred 'over' | News24Inge Lotz Archives - The Mail & GuardianInge Lotz murder: Nine years later, two amateur forensi...Inge-Lotz-FINAL | MatieMediaInvestigators unearth sordid new twist in Lotz murder caseJustice for INGE LOTZ - Posts | FacebookLast hours with slain studentLotz 'murderer's' alibi 'not watertight'Lotz 'tried to avoid fatal blows'Lotz murder accused acted strangely, court hears - The Mail & GuardianLotz's dad has ‘cut himself off from world'Man 'confessed' to Inge murder | News24Minister van Polisie v Van der Vyver - WikipediaNew Doc 2017-09-11New Doc 2017-09-11 (4)New Doc 2017-09-11 (7)Pathologist describes Inge Lotz's wounds | News24PressReader.com - Digital Newspaper & Magazine SubscriptionsPressReader.com - Digital Newspaper & Magazine SubscriptionsProf Jan Lotz: "Fred, I want answers" | YouS v Van der Vyver (SS 190/06) [2007] ZAWCHC 69; 2008 (1) SA 556 (C) (29 November 2007)http://truth4inge.com/Who killed Inge? 11 years later mysterious Lotz murder still haunts | You Get bonus content on Patreon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

This is part two of the Station Strangler. If you haven't listened to part one, start there. Last week we covered a series of murders, from 1986 to 1992, and I told you about ten young boys who were raped and strangled before being dumped in various sites near the train stations and in the sand dunes of Mitchell's Plain and surrounds.  In early 1994, there had been a gap of over two years since the disappearance of any young boys had been definitively linked to the so-called Station Strangler, but soon we would learn that the nightmare was far from over. In January, just a single month, the bodies of eleven raped and murdered young victims would be found. This is what is known as the month of horror. PATREON: https://www.patreon.com/ithappenedhere SOURCES: https://apnews.com/article/c60bf1b31c1ad630cd17035149fe35c6https://apnews.com/article/fb2a9bb403504cd9fe764badfb059bc7https://mg.co.za/article/1994-09-09-station-strangler-whos-fooling-whom/https://mg.co.za/article/2005-08-16-station-strangler-back-in-court/https://mg.co.za/article/2007-04-25-late-judge-fondly-remembered-by-peers/?amphttps://www.deseret.com/1995/6/14/19177025/is-man-who-killed-boy-s-africa-s-serial-stranglerhttps://www.iol.co.za/news/south-africa/revisiting-the-station-strangler-cases-250970https://www.iol.co.za/news/south-africa/serial-killer-inquest-hear-of-inconsistencies-400257https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1994-01-29-mn-16600-story.htmlhttps://www.pressreader.com/south-africa/cape-argus/20091214/282372625716970https://www.pressreader.com/south-africa/weekend-argus-saturday-edition/20140524/281625303343669https://www.pressreader.com/south-africa/weekend-argus-saturday-edition/20091212/283089885254251https://www.pressreader.com/south-africa/weekend-argus-sunday-edition/20091213/282737697936478https://www.sahistory.org.za/place/cape-flats-cape-townhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fjWHrL6kIwhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HK8hFQR3ip8https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JFGyQ78cvEProfiling serial killers and other crimes in South Africa, by Micki Pistorius. The case of the Station Strangler unfolds at a critical and tense juncture of South African history. The majority of events here take place between 1986 and 1995, the last few years of apartheid. In fact, eleven victims bodies are found just weeks before our first democratic election in 1994. Only one man has ever been convicted of any crime associated with this spate of murders, although there is a lot of speculation that he wasn't the only perpetrator. So many social, personal and political factors combined around this case, making it one of such horror and cultural significance in South Africa that for many of us, the dunes and the trains stations of Mitchell's Plain and the Cape Flats still carry a taint of association – sites where at least 22 boys and young men met someone who lured them away, raped and killed them, before burying them in shallow sandy graves. PATREON: https://www.patreon.com/ithappenedhere SOURCES: https://apnews.com/article/c60bf1b31c1ad630cd17035149fe35c6https://apnews.com/article/fb2a9bb403504cd9fe764badfb059bc7https://mg.co.za/article/1994-09-09-station-strangler-whos-fooling-whom/https://mg.co.za/article/2005-08-16-station-strangler-back-in-court/https://mg.co.za/article/2007-04-25-late-judge-fondly-remembered-by-peers/?amphttps://www.deseret.com/1995/6/14/19177025/is-man-who-killed-boy-s-africa-s-serial-stranglerhttps://www.iol.co.za/news/south-africa/revisiting-the-station-strangler-cases-250970https://www.iol.co.za/news/south-africa/serial-killer-inquest-hear-of-inconsistencies-400257https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1994-01-29-mn-16600-story.htmlhttps://www.pressreader.com/south-africa/cape-argus/20091214/282372625716970https://www.pressreader.com/south-africa/weekend-argus-saturday-edition/20140524/281625303343669https://www.pressreader.com/south-africa/weekend-argus-saturday-edition/20091212/283089885254251https://www.pressreader.com/south-africa/weekend-argus-sunday-edition/20091213/282737697936478https://www.sahistory.org.za/place/cape-flats-cape-town Get bonus content on Patreon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

This is part two of the Krugersdorp cult killings. At the centre of this is a woman called Cecilia Steyn who has created this epic backstory for herself, in which she is a former Satanist, a ritualistic abuse survivor, who wants to transform her life and walk with christ. So far she's convinced Ria Grunewald and Ria's prayer group turned sect Overcomers through Christ that for the church of satan, she's the one who got away. And then she's turned a small breakaway group against Ria, and together perpetrated four murders in 2012. The next definitive point on our timeline - where this episode picks up the story again - is November 2015, when the group shifts from murder for revenge and belief, to murder for profit.  SOURCES: ·      The Krugersdorp killings explained: Who was murdered, how, and why | News24·      Grandson is 'saviour' for victims of 'Krugersdorp killers'·      Seven life terms in jail for Krugersdorp teen roped into murder by mom·      Krugersdorp Killers: Six chilling details from Marinda Steyn's testimony·      #KrugersdorpMurders – remaining three to learn their fate this week | Krugersdorp News·      Krugersdorp killings: 'Witches will kill you,' Marcel Steyn's mom tells her in prison - report | News24·      #KrugersdorpMurders — Marinda Steyn's testimony of why they started killing people | Krugersdorp News·      #KrugersdorpMurders – God has forgiven me, says convicted murderer Marinda Steyn | Krugersdorp News·      Krugersdorp killers strangled most victims to death·      Main suspect in Krugersdorp murders suing police for over R3m·      ‘Devilsdorp' killers: Six bizarre details that didn't make it into the doccie·      Outrageous omission gives 'The Trials of Oscar Pistorius' a bitter taste·      #KrugersdorpMurders – 'She was sent to open the gates of Hell' | Krugersdorp News·      Cecilia Steyn – Candice Rijavec·      'Remember I love you' - murdered Krugersdorp victim's last words to fiancée·      First photo of all the accused in #TripleMurder case | Krugersdorp News·      Life in jail for friends and neighbours guilty of Krugersdorp killing 'tsunami'·      Interesting yet disturbing info about the #KrugersdorpMurders trial so far | Krugersdorp News·      Krugersdorp killings: Cecilia Steyn denies being a satanist | News24·      'Remember I love you' - murdered Krugersdorp victim's last words to fiancée·      Krugersdorp killer says best friend was not murder 'mastermind'·      Life in jail for friends and neighbours guilty of Krugersdorp killing 'tsunami'·      'Krugersdorp Killers' torn by plea bargains·      https://www.showmax.com/eng/tvseries/lguobeqc-devilsdorp·     Devilsdorp - The Official Companion Podcast; https://iono.fm/c/6598·      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KixioWhKJE4·     https://www.npa.gov.za/sites/default/files/media releases/Indefinite%20Life%20Sentences%20for%20Krugersdorp%E2%80%99s%20Electus%20Per%20Deus%20Cult.pdf Get bonus content on Patreon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Vlakfontein is the kind of place where you know your neighbours by name and by sight. But in October of 2018, no one had seen the Khoza family from 4192 Ibis Crescent for a few days. There are quite a few people who call this property home. Mbali Khoza is the homeowner, and she lives here with a long-term boyfriend Fita Khupe and her sister Dudu Khoza. Dudu's kids – Nomfundo, Luyanda and Sbongakonke – also lived there, and Nomfundo herself had two kids, Karabo and Nkanyiso. It is very common in South Africa for multiple generations of the same family to share a home. It is also common, if you have the space, to rent out your back rooms for some extra income. Andre Cossa is one such tenant. He didn't have to go through the main house to access his room, but all the same he was getting pretty concerned about his landlords by the end of the month, not least of all because of the increasingly alarming odour emanating from behind the closed doors and windows of the main house and another back room. That's how this incredibly infuriating case starts, before meandering through false identities, dodgy politicians, journalists overstepping the mark, incompetent prosecutions… and the ending will leave you both confused and frustrated. Sources-        https://www.news24.com/drum/News/family-of-the-seven-people-found-dead-in-a-vlakfontein-house-speak-out-20190217-        (https://www.news24.com/news24/SouthAfrica/News/vlakfontein-residents-up-in-arms-after-man-accused-of-seven-murders-walks-free-20190607)-        https://www.enca.com/news/gruesome-details-vlakfontein-murder-revealed-court-        https://www.enca.com/news/gruesome-details-vlakfontein-murder-revealed-court-        https://www.enca.com/news/vlakfontein-family-speaks-out-        https://www.iol.co.za/news/south-africa/gauteng/vlakfontein-khupe-forced-me-to-rape-and-kill-the-khozas-says-mabaso-18310112 https://lowvelder.co.za/lnn/532843/vlakfontein-murder-accused-ernest-mabaso-commits-suicide-        https://www.npa.gov.za/sites/default/files/media-releases/NPA%20Withdraws%20Charges%20Against%20Fita%20Khupe.pdf-        https://www.sabcnews.com/sabcnews/mabaso-details-how-he-raped-killed-khoza-family-in-vlakfontein/-        https://www.sowetanlive.co.za/news/south-africa/2018-11-06-grieving-dad-wont-forgive-vlakfontein-killers/-        https://www.sowetanlive.co.za/news/south-africa/2018-12-05-dates-of-vlakfontein-murders-disputed-in-court-by-accuseds-lawyer/-        https://www.sowetanlive.co.za/news/south-africa/2019-06-10-parents-of-vlakfontein-mass-murder-victims-fume-over-khupes-case/-        https://www.sowetanlive.co.za/news/south-africa/2019-06-10-parents-of-vlakfontein-mass-murder-victims-fume-over-khupes-case/-        https://www.timeslive.co.za/news/south-africa/2018-12-06-vlakfontein-murder-suspect-originally-treated-as-a-victim-court-hears/-        https://www.timeslive.co.za/news/south-africa/2018-12-06-vlakfontein-murder-suspect-originally-treated-as-a-victim-court-hears/-        https://youtu.be/A_zjq_wDauQ-        https://youtu.be/rIw0GFvgBJ4https://youtu.be/xVPaAeenLno Get bonus content on Patreon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

It's 2016, July 24th, and the receptionist on duty of Spier Hotel has just taken a call from a guest in need of a maintenance man. Spier is a four-star hotel, positioned on one of the country's oldest wine farms. Maintenance work Desmond Daniels responds to the call, and at this moment, of the lock turning, two versions of the story splinter off. What maintenance man Desmond and husband Jason describe on the other side of the bathroom door was either a tragic suicide by a distraught and heartbroken woman, or the deliberate murder and cover up by her scheming husband. Sources:·       https://www.timeslive.co.za/sunday-times/news/2017-11-11-if-words-could-kill-the-rohdes-chilling-whatsapp-warfare/·       https://www.timeslive.co.za/news/south-africa/2017-11-21-rohdes-defence-relates-how-he-hit-his-wife-susan/·       https://www.news24.com/news24/southafrica/news/rohdes-wifes-family-prejudged-and-ostracised-him-court-hears-20171102·       https://www.news24.com/news24/southafrica/news/just-in-convicted-wife-killer-jason-rohdes-appeal-will-be-heard-on-16-august-20210621·       https://www.news24.com/news24/SouthAfrica/News/jason-rohde-told-his-wife-he-was-done-with-their-marriage-hours-before-she-was-found-dead-20180528·       https://www.news24.com/news24/SouthAfrica/News/jason-rohde-arrested-for-wifes-murder-20160823·       https://www.magzter.com/stories/Entertainment/YOU-South-Africa/Murdered-Mom-Remembered·       https://www.iol.co.za/weekend-argus/news/mom-of-slain-susan-rohde-struggling-to-mourn-support-grandkids-18433664·       https://www.iol.co.za/news/chilling-details-of-rohde-murder-2061590·       https://www.iol.co.za/capeargus/news/sotheby-bosss-wifes-death-a-suicide-pathologist-2060984·       https://shakedowntitle.com/2018/08/10/according-to-brendan-miller-susan-rohde-was-calm-shortly-before-her-death/·       https://citizen.co.za/news/1947363/infographic-what-happened-according-to-murder-accused-jason-rohde/·       http://www.saflii.org/za/cases/ZAWCHC/2018/146.html  Get bonus content on Patreon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Hate and homicide: The murder of Noxolo Nogwaza

Today I'm talking about hate crimes and homophobia in South Africa. For this episode, we are traveling to KwaThema, a township in Gauteng. There is electricity in kwathema, but there are also these huge towering spotlight-style street lights. They're lifted that high to try provide a measure of light and security, but there are always bits the light doesn't reach. And it was in a patch of deep shadow, in an alley between buildings that a woman called Noxolo Nogwaza was killed in April 2011. Noxolo – which means peace in Zulu - was just 24. She was a mum to two small kids, and she lived with her gran Vuyelwa. She loved soccer, and kwaito music. And, she just so happened to be gay – and it was this fact that made her the target of violent homophobes.  Music by Matt Riggen: https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=APy4JmdZRj8&list=RDAMVMAPy4JmdZRj8https://www.amazon.com/An-Afterlife-for-Noxolo-Nogwaza/dp/B075BHNLDMhttps://open.spotify.com/album/6szYBqJ2QLPyZilbB57Z3S?highlight=spotify:track:3zwt18c7a6EiKhc62so6njSian Green Psychology: https://sgpsychology.co.za/  SOURCES ·      http://archive.nytimes.com/www.nytimes.com/interactive/2013/07/26/opinion/26corrective-rape.html·      https://inkanyiso.org/2013/05/06/2013-may-6-archiving-noxolo-nogwazas-funeral/·      https://kemptonexpress.co.za/270983/ekurhuleni-pride-to-be-hosted-in-tembisa/·      https://open.spotify.com/show/3FvJkU9NUNNKGRoTUgNDwr·      https://outrightinternational.org/content/call-action-against-brutal-rape-and-murder-south-african-lesbian-noxolo-nogwaza·      https://wazimap.co.za/profiles/ward-79700074-ekurhuleni-ward-74-79700074/·      https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/campaigns/2013/04/two-years-on-no-justice-for-hate-crime-in-south-africa/·      https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2012/10/blog-south-africas-townships-still-not-safe-gay-lesbian-and-transgender-people/·      https://www.hrw.org/node/242800/printable/print·      https://www.iol.co.za/the-star/no-progress-in-corrective-rape-probe-1284429·      https://www.latimes.com/world/la-xpm-2011-may-27-la-fg-south-africa-gay-killings-20110528-story.html·      https://www.pride.com/soapbox/south-african-lesbian-activist-murdered·      https://www.researchgate.net/publication/311717843_What_is_wrong_with_'Corrective_Rape'·      https://www.thedailyvox.co.za/four-years-on-still-no-justice-for-noxolo/·      https://www.voanews.com/africa/south-africa-establishes-team-respond-homophobic-crimes  Get bonus content on Patreon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Uyinene – sometimes called Nene – was just 19 years old when she disappeared while out and about running errands, prompting a nationwide alarm and search. It is often credited as the spark of the #aminext movement, which was a local iteration of the global #metoo movement. This case was so shocking to South Africans that it sparked protests in both the real world and social streets, calling on our government to do something, anything, to turn the tide on the seemingly endless instances of gender-based violence and femicides. An obvious but necessary trigger warning: This episode covers gender-based violence, including sexual assault, so please consider your own emotional and mental wellbeing and how they may be affected by these topics, before listening.  Sources: ·      https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-50431903·      https://www.capetownetc.com/news/uct-students-rally-to-bring-missing-girl-home/·      https://www.change.org/p/south-african-government-bring-back-the-death-sentence-in-sa-for-crimes-against-women?·      https://www.cnn.com/2019/11/15/africa/south-africa-student-murder-sentence/index.html·      https://www.constituteproject.org/constitution/South_Africa_2012.pdf?lang=en·      https://www.instagram.com/uyinene/·      https://www.news24.com/news24/SouthAfrica/News/publics-rallying-cry-as-pi-hired-to-help-find-missing-uct-student-uyinene-20190828·      https://www.news24.com/news24/southafrica/news/uyinene-mrwetyanas-body-was-hidden-in-post-office-safe-overnight-says-state-20191107·      https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/the-death-of-uyinene-mrwetyana-and-the-rise-of-south-africas-aminext-movement·      https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/uyinene-mrwetyana-more-investigators-join-the-search-for-missing-student/·      https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/uyinene-mrwetyana-uct-intensifies-the-search-for-missing-student/·      https://www.timeslive.co.za/news/south-africa/2019-08-31-man-arrested-in-connection-with-disappearance-of-uyinene-mrwetyana/·      https://www.timeslive.co.za/news/south-africa/2019-11-15-in-his-own-words-luyanda-botha-this-is-how-i-killed-uyinene/Bed music: Awen by The Mind Orchestra is licensed under a Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License(https://freemusicarchive.org/music/The_Mind_Orchestra/The_Mind_Orchestra_-_Singles/awen) Get bonus content on Patreon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The short life and long legacy of Sheldean Human

This story is full of disturbing and mature material. It also deals with violence against children and sexual assault. So please bear that in mind before listening. Sheldean Human was born on the second of April 1999, to mother Elize and father Wikus. By the time we enter the story, Her parents divorced and Sheldean lives with her mom in Pretoria, a city north of Johannesburg, South Africa. Sheldean attended the nearby primary school, where her teachers described her as friendly and self-confident, independent, and a pretty child with her straight blonde hair cut into blunt fringe. On the evening of Sunday 18 Feb, 2007, at about 6pm, Elize went to go socialise with a friend who lived in a flat at the back of the commune property. It's Summer in South Africa, and the sun would still be up. Her daughter was playing in the front garden with another little girl who lived there. Mary's mom calls her in for bath time, leaving Sheldean in the yard alone. By 6:45pm, just as the sun is starting to set, Elize heads to the front to collect Sheldean, so that they can get a jump on prepping for the school day tomorrow, but she is not where she is supposed to be. Sources:1.     Cape Talk: http://www.capetalk.co.za/articles/257580/gentle-giant-piet-byleveld-remembered-for-his-legendary-detective-skills2.     Crimes uncovered: https://tubitv.com/tv-shows/503736/s01-e06-taken-the-sheldean-human-story?start=true3.     ENCA: https://www.enca.com/south-africa/south-africa-s-super-cop-the-top-cases-piet-byleveld-helped-crack4.     EWN: https://ewn.co.za/2017/05/24/sa-super-sleuth-piet-byleveld-dies5.     EWN: https://ewn.co.za/2017/06/01/watch-piet-byleveld-given-hero-s-send-off6.     https://www.timeslive.co.za/news/south-africa/2017-06-02-manhunter-bylevelds-last-case/7.     News24: https://www.news24.com/channel/tv/news/three-reasons-to-binge-gritty-cape-town-cop-drama-die-byl-201907168.     News24: https://www.news24.com/news24/sheldeans-killer-got-what-he-deserved-201202149.     News24: https://www.news24.com/news24/court-hears-how-sheldean-died-2008052210.  TimesLive: https://www.timeslive.co.za/news/south-africa/2017-05-24-everything-i-believe-in-one-word-hope-piet-bylevelds-cv/11.  True Crime South Africa: https://truecrimesouthafrica.com/ and https://www.timeslive.co.za/news/south-africa/2020-04-24-podcast--sheldean-human-silence-is-deadly/Bed music: Awen by The Mind Orchestra is licensed under a Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License(https://freemusicarchive.org/music/The_Mind_Orchestra/The_Mind_Orchestra_-_Singles/awen) Get bonus content on Patreon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

It's the 21st of July 2004, Eliot Makhubela and his nephew Samuel were cutting grass in open patches of land near the village of Walkerville, South Africa. Eliot made a living drying and selling this long grass as roof thatching. It had been a long day, and although they were knocking off, they decided to stop by one last spot. This was where they were going to start the next day, so they were scouting it out essentially. It was Samuel who first spotted something in the grass although he didn't know what it was, but as soon as Eliot saw it, he knew it was a body. There in the scrubby veld lay a young woman, naked and lying on her back, her face turned to the side, and clearly dead with three gunshot wounds. They didn't know it at the time, but this was the body of Leigh Matthews, a student who'd been missing for 12 days, a young woman whose disappearance the whole country had been talking about for days. Source material:·       Sapa (iol): https://www.iol.co.za/news/south-africa/leigh-matthews-is-dead-217753#.UUdJuxdTCz4·       News 24: https://www.news24.com/News24/Kidnapped-girl-still-missing-20040711·       Iol: https://www.iol.co.za/news/south-africa/moodleys-appeal-dismissed-485151#.UUd13BdTCz4·       NicoleClaire (youtube): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-sHsoEHLwA·       Mail & Guardian: https://mg.co.za/article/2005-11-18-donovan-moodley-i-was-framed/·       You mag: https://www.pressreader.com/south-africa/you-south-africa/20190801/281565177356771·       Evidence locker podcast: https://evidencelockerpodcast.com/transcript-97-the-murder-of-leigh-matthews-south-africa/·       Saturday Star: https://www.iol.co.za/news/south-africa/gauteng/leigh-murder-shocker-1172123·       Byleveld: Dossier of a Serial Sleuth, by Hanlie Retief: https://www.amazon.com/Byleveld-dossier-serial-Hanlie-Retief-ebook/dp/B005JD2OES·       News 24: https://www.news24.com/News24/I-am-too-clever-says-Donovan-Moodley-20120125·       News 24: https://www.news24.com/News24/Moodleys-application-dismissed-20091125·       News 24: https://www.news24.com/News24/Moodley-shows-no-emotion-as-verdict-read-20120201 Get bonus content on Patreon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
