#074 — Operating Best Practices + Systems Manual for House and Home Renée Warren was depleted and depressed. She had a terrible relationship with her husband and felt little connection to her two boys. What WAS working in her life? The PR agency she had founded was thriving, surpassing its goals and growing to a team of 10. Renée wondered what might happen if she applied a business philosophy to her home life… And that changed everything.  Renée and her husband started holding weekly meetings and quarterly retreats, setting goals for the family based on the values that are important to them. They have scheduled offline time with the boys every evening from 5-6pm, and they have even gone so far as to compose a Family Operations Manual that keeps things running smoothly when they are away. Today, Renée joins me to share her crazy parenting journey, discussing the challenges of having her two sons in the first year of her PR business. She explains how her decision to treat family life like a business eventually became a business of its own, the Family Academy platform. I ask Kate about the details of her family’s weekly meetings and quarterly retreats, and she describes how ‘role rating’ has strengthened her relationship with her husband. Listen in for Kate’s insight on spending quality time with your partner and kiddos—and learn how your family life can flourish by implementing business systems and best practices! Sherry talks with Renee Warren of The Family Academy, about how she and her husband, Dan Martell, have structured their two-founder family. With two on-fire careers and two kiddos, it takes some strategizing to create space for everyone in the family to flourish (and also stay connected). Episode Transcript Sherry Walling: Hi everybody, Happy New Year! So excited that it is 2018 and that 2017 is a thing of the past. We are cooking up some great things for the year ahead. One of the things that Rob and I are going to do is be more in touch with our email list. So if you are interested in kind of inside stories about some of the topics that we cover on ZenFounder or if you want to learn more about what we’re doing, where we’re speaking, where we’re gonna be showing up, we are working hard to bring some value to your inbox, just a couple times a month. Like two to three emails a month is what we’re going for. So if that’s something that you would like to have happen, feel free to sign up. It’s on our website at ZenFounder.com. And it’s low-risk. If you are irritated or you feel we’re emailing too much, you just unsubscribe. One other thing that is happening right now is that we are forming a January Zen Tribe. If you are wanting to kick off 2018 by connecting with some other entrepreneurs, some other people who are curating their own lives by starting their own businesses, tribes are a group of about eight entrepreneurs, usually from different kinds of backgrounds, and it’s kind of an 8 week bootcamp of wellness and mental health and friendship. And we meet weekly for eight weeks. We usually schedule some breaks in there. It has been a really beneficial experience for the people that have gone through it. So if you have questions about Zen Tribe feel free to hit me at up at Sherry@ZenFounder.com. So today we’re gonna talk about starting a new year well, particularly when it comes to thinking about how to set good goals as a family. How to evaluate your family’s well-being and health and then implement strategies to keep a family going strong. And my guest today is Renee Warren. She is a brilliant, determined, realist. She’s the former founder of a popular startup PR firm called Onboardly. She’s written hundreds of articles and ebooks on startup marketing and has helped people get on TV shows and magazines and blogs. Right now she is on a mission to help entrepreneur families gain more freedom in their lives. She is launching something called the Family Academy. And she knows this stuff inside and out. In addition to working professionally with many, many startup founders, she’s also married to Dan Martell, who’s been a guest on this show before, who among other things is the founder of Clarity. So she’s been on this journey both herself, and as a spouse, and as a professional. Sort of sounds familiar. Anyway, Renee lives in Canada with her husband and two boys and she and I have a fabulous conversation and I am excited to share it with you today. Sherry Walling: So I am really excited to be talking to you today. And in addition to you being a force in your own right, as somebody who has started multiple businesses, right? And has a history in advertising, and writing, and PR, and just so many important skills, you’re also married to a founder to Dan Martell, who’s been a guest on this podcast before and are a parent. Rob: Hey, Kira, Shanelle. Shanelle: Hey guys. Kira: Hi. Thanks for joining us, Shanelle. Shanelle: Yeah, thanks for having me. Kira: Great place for us to start is with an article you recently published, I believe you recently published it, on Medium entitled Life Lessons Learned from 10 Years of Marketing. It was a great read and I know you mention that you really got into marketing at the age of 15. I would love to start there and find out what compelled you to jump into this world of marketing at such a young age? Rob: Yeah, what kind of a kid thinks, “Hey, I know what I’m ready to do already”? Shanelle: Yeah, I mean, it’s kind of a weird story. I was probably 13 at the time and I was playing a game called Habbo Hotel, which if you’re not familiar ... Kira: What is that game? Shanelle: You create like a little pixel avatar of yourself and then you walk around this hotel and you can chat with people from around the world and you can collect furniture and play games and it was really fun when I was 13 and I was obsessed with it. Kira: Wait, it sounds fun right now. I kind of want to play. Rob: Check into that. Shanelle: Yeah. I decided to look into other people who were making these mini-Habbo Hotels and they were basically just teenagers like me and they were all hanging out on this forum. I joined this forum and I just ended up talking to them and getting to know some of the marketing people and I had no idea what marketing was of course because I was 13. They just explained it to me like simple price, product, placement, and promotion terms and I was like, “That sounds amazing,” for some reason. I started reading about it and by the time I was 15 I had gotten my first marketing gig, which was exciting. Rob: Where do you go to from there? You know, you’re 15, you’ve basically started your career. Tell us the rest of the story. What happens? How does it unfold over the next few years? Shanelle: Yeah, so I actually started working for the guy who ran this forum that I was part of.

"If you're an entrepreneur, the reality is that you're constantly marketing your company." - Renee Warren About: Renee Warren - Co-Founder of Onboardly Often referred to as a ‘geek in stilettos’, Renée has been in the marketing and entrepreneurship space since she was 17 years old. Having run a successful restaurant at such a young age, she quickly learned the necessary skills and tactics needed to promote her companies. Overview: With a long-term background in entrepreneurship and marketing, Renee shares tips on how to help your startup succeed and how her team at Onboardly can help. Highlights: Background: When Renee was 17 she started her own restaurant with her sister. It was a seasonal thing that she did during the summer for four years. Her restaurant did very well and provided her with the means to pay for her college education. She went on to attended a well-known business school in Canada and continued her entrepreneurial journey from there. What is Onboardly: Onboardly works specifically with funded tech startups to help them with customer acquisition. They do this through PR content marketing and social media. Renee and her co-founder Heather, started the company after coming together to collaborate on some projects. Onboardly works with clients for a minimum of 6 months. Their goal is to create relationships on behalf of their clients and not for their company. When these clients leave the company's help, they have established long-term connections.  Webinars: Service base business can be difficult to scale. You'll always need someone trying to sell their (Onboardly) type of service. The purpose of their free webinars are to educate potential clients and hopefully increase their sales. By doing so, it gives their audience a chance to know them, understand what they do, and how they can help them. Advice for Entrepreneurs: If you're thinking about PR/marketing for your company, in order to be effective, it's a process. If you are developing anything for your company, you need to start working on your message from day one. It's also important to create relationships with journalists, writers, and podcasters. These types of people will help you extend your brand. Start following certain writers from different publications you'd like to be highlighted on, and see how or where your service can fit in with them. Don't ask favors from people unless you've done something for them first. If you're shy, you're going to have to get over those hesitations, follow other entrepreneurs you look up to, and get yourself out there. Agency Partner: How to Grow a Successful Agency with One Have you ever considered running your business with an agency partner? It's not easy being agency stakeholders and close friends but in this episode, these two ladies have it all figured out. Renee Warren and Heather Carson, co-founders of Onboardly, a demand marketing agency servicing clients in PR, content marketing, and social media talk with me about their secrets... Secrets to successful partnerships, secrets to their agency growth, and the one secret every new startup owner needs to know.   What's the Secret to a Great Partnership? I usually tell people, “You either know the bad partner or you are the bad partner.” Not true for Renee and Heather. They get along like besties and they tell me it's because they have rules for keeping business and friendship separate. They are careful to keep the lines drawn and clear about when they're wearing their “friend hat” or their “founder hat”. They say this distinction has really made a lot of hard conversations go more smoothly than they might've otherwise. Heather and Renee also told me another key to their successful partnership is trust. Both ladies are totally confident that the other has the company's best interest at heart when making decisions or representing the business. There's no control freak in this duo! Another thing they've found helpful is bringing a mentor or advisor in when they've needed some guidance or third-party input. (Not to brag but they did give me some props here.) And, even if it's not me, I agree that an unbiased opinion from an outsider can really benefit an agency partner and solopreneurs. Learn from the mistakes and successes of those who have been there and done it. What are the Secrets to Agency Growth? Onboardly was established in 2011. Throughout those four years, Renee and Heather have learned a few things about growing their agency. Here are their 3 tips for actualizing growth: 1. Shared Goals For starters, these partners share the same goals and have a growth mindset. When their company reached a plateau in the third year, they decided to focus on removing the obstacles that were standing in their way. They articulate their goals to each other and their team, and don't let excuses get in the way. 2. Laser Focus Target Not only do they have a specific niche, but Heather and Renee are also very selective in which clients they will work with inside that niche. These ladies are clear that they will only work with clients that will allow them to produce good work. They won't spin their wheels on clients that require too much red tape or hand-holding. And over the past few years, Heather has honed her process for vetting clients which saves them a lot of time and energy in the long run. 3. Say No They've done it. Even when it was hard, Renee and Heather have turned down work from family and friends. They've turned away work from clients who couldn't afford them. They have had those awkward “thanks, but no thanks” conversations that keep the integrity of their business intact. What's One Secret for New Entrepreneurs? These ladies believe that if you get into business for any reason other than yourself, you're in it for the wrong reason. Knowing your "why" creates the playbook for your entire organization. It defines your culture, your employees, your clients... it becomes everything. In hindsight, if they'd known and articulated their purpose sooner it may have changed the trajectory of their entire business.  Bottom line: be true to your story and don't lose sight of it. So, What Exactly Is ‘Onboardly'? They are the startup for startups. Now, they're not in their early stages anymore but they still act like a startup. They model their clients by using the same systems and technology. They want to be able to relate to and provide value to their clients. Looking for a third-party opinion to help your agency grow? Would you like to meet other agency owners that have achieved what you're aspiring towards? That's what my Agency Mastermind group is all about. As a group and a team... we will work together to figure out the best sales, operations, and marketing strategies needed to exceed your goals. In other words, you will have all of the help you need to crush it! Learn more by clicking here... Become a Better Agency Owner Having an agency partner to run your business with you can bring many benefits but I suggest making sure to take my advice and find someone that is the best fit for you when you are ready to start your journey with an agency partner. Taking a step back and reviewing any other areas of weakness in your agency, how else I can help? During my time in the industry, I have had my own experience running my own digital agency and helping other digital agency owners so there are many topics where I can offer guidance. Whether you are experiencing challenges as an established agency or a new agency unsure of what the different phases of growth you will experience will look like, I've got you covered. As you continue to grow your agency team, I can show you how to recognize when it's time to hire a sales manager or expand your sales team to perfect your business strategy by creating a process for performance-based pricing and how to keep your big name clients happy.
