Dan Brisse won back-to-back X Games gold medals as one of the most dangerous urban snowboarders on the planet—jumping off parking garages, rooftops, and rails for a living. But while he was at the peak of his career, he was watching his heroes lose their homes, their wives, and their minds. So he did something different. He started investing. In this episode, Dan breaks down how he went from living on peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to co-founding Granite Towers—a real estate company that manages nearly $500M across 3,300+ apartment units. We get into how he protects downside in every deal, why multifamily real estate quietly compounds wealth, and what his exact investing criteria looks like today. We also get into hiring on core values, why urgency is a red flag in any investment, and the one piece of advice he's giving his 13-year-old son about building wealth. Watch this episode on YouTube! In this episode of The Small Business Mindset, Kirsten Flory challenges one of the most common myths in entrepreneurship: that you need money to start a business. Spoiler alert - you don't. What you do need is something far more valuable (and completely free): proof of concept. Kirsten dives into why so many aspiring business owners skip this critical step and how it can make or break your success before you ever spend a dollar. She shared personal insights from building her commercial real estate brokerage, explaining how starting lean - and resisting the urge to overspend - allowed her business to grow strategically. You'll also hear a candid (and slightly humorous) story about a business idea that didn't pass the test, and why that failure was actually a win. This episode will help you: Understand what proof of concept really means Avoid the trap of relying on friends and family for validation Learn how to gather honest, actionable feedback Identify your true target customer Test your idea without wasting time or money Separate "people like it" from "people will pay for it" If you're thinking about starting a business, or pivoting your current one, this episode will give you a practical, no-cost roadmap to validate your idea before investing in it. Stop just running your business and start leading it—discover how to reclaim your joy and scale with intention Host Iris Goldfeder welcomes long-time friend Dr. Erin Burgoon—an executive business coach, social psychologist, and author of Joyful AF—to discuss the "real recipes" behind sustainable entrepreneurship. In this episode, they dive deep into the difficult transition from being a "mush ball" manager to a decisive leader, the importance of maintaining integrity over decades, and why human "grit" is the one thing AI will never be able to replicate. Whether you are a tech founder or a spiritual entrepreneur, this conversation offers a roadmap for taking that first "step of faith" toward your next level of growth. Key Takeaways: Managing vs. Leading: Stepping into leadership requires setting firm boundaries and providing clear direction rather than merely overseeing tasks. Origin vs. Story: Your "origin" is your foundation and never changes, while your "story" and "why" evolve as you and your business grow. Human Grit Over AI: AI is an enhancement for efficiency, but it lacks the lived experience and emotional "panache" that only a human creator can provide. The Power of Resonance: True leadership and passion are found when you align your business actions with your internal "resonance" and "fire". Scaling Requires Change: To reach a new goal, you must stop doing the exact things that got you to your current level and embrace new systems. Do you ever feel like there just aren't enough hours in the day? As a business owner, your to-do list is virtually never-ending. But what if you could grow your business faster by doing less? Today's podcast guest is proof that it's possible. Rodric Lenhart is a lifelong entrepreneur, multi-best-selling author, and sought-after speaker. Over the last 30 years, he's built several multi-million dollar companies in both the product and service industries. Having traveled to more than 50 countries across six continents, Rodric brings a unique worldview and a deep appreciation for freedom. All profits from his book Million Dollar Flip Flops are donated to his foundation, Send a Student Leader Abroad, with the goal of sending one million kids on life-changing trips. Build Your Business Around Your Life Like most successful business owners, Rodric is very protective of his time. He wakes up in the sun and has a structured morning routine, after which he works from around 10:00 to 3:00 pm. It's important for him to leave empty space on the calendar for reading, writing, and introspection. That quiet time is crucial for developing the business. When you're busy all day everyday, that leaves little room for new ideas. If you're trying to find your ideal daily routine, ask yourself what you want your day to look like a year from now–then build a business that fuels that, instead of the other way around. Advice for New Entrepreneurs Rodric has two pieces of advice for new entrepreneurs: the first is to turn off social media. Forget what everyone else is doing and focus on your business and your customers. Don't get lost in the comparison game. Second, try to avoid Shiny Object Syndrome. It's easy to get sucked into the newest app or strategy, but successful businesses are built on the basics. Be willing to pick up the phone and have conversations with people. Figure out what your target audience wants and needs, then give it to them. Let them tell you what they want, instead of trying to impose your ideas on them. Listen and learn. Enjoy this episode with founder Rodric Lenhart… Soundbytes 11:29-11:51 “I'm very protective of my time. I haven't set an alarm in probably 15 years. I wake up with the sun. I have a very set morning routine, and I try to work between around 10:00 and 3:00 every day. And I make a lot of time for reading and introspection and writing and developing the business, not just being busy all the time.” 21:10-21:36 “It's shiny object syndrome, the next cool app or program, the next customer acquisition method. That's not what's going to give you a successful business. It's back to the basics. It's having conversations with people. It's being willing to pick up the phone. It's learning what do they want, what do they need? That's how you know what to give them, versus thinking you have this idea of what to give them.” Quotes “The bulk of my financial abundance came from the ability to change course.” “What do you want your day to look like a year from now? And let's build a business that feeds that, not the other way around.” “Why write a book? Well, it's to help people who are in the same situation I might have been in 20 years ago.” “Ultimately, it all comes from a place of service. And I think if we aren't wired that way to start, none of the other things fall into place.” “I don't know what chapter two looks like, but I know I can't see it while I'm in the middle of chapter one.” Links mentioned in this episode: Million Dollar Flip Flops: http://www.milliondollarflipflops.com/ Connect with Rodric on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rodriclenhart/ Connect with Rodric on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/rodriclenhart/ Connect with brandiD: Download our free guide to learn 16 crucial website updates that attract more leads and convert visitors into clients: https://thebrandid.com/website-tweaks/ Ready to elevate your digital presence with a powerful brand or website? Hey Rainmakers! It's Stephen and Chelsey here, and today we're diving deep into culture with the incredible Mimi Dew. Whether you're running a large company or building a small team, Mimi shares why intentional culture is essential for growth and legacy. In this episode, we explore practical tips on fostering culture, starting from your very first hire, and why a strong foundation of values can make all the difference. Mimi and her husband, Jim, have led their company, Dew Wealth, to the Inc. 5000 list three years running, and she credits much of their success to a well-defined, values-driven culture. They share how they were initially reactive about culture but learned the hard way that drifting leads to negative outcomes. Now, with intentional core values like collaboration, transparency, and vision, Dew Wealth has transformed into a place where everyone feels connected to the mission. For Dew Wealth, intentionality starts from day one with every employee, where mission and core values are embedded in the onboarding process. Mimi reveals how they keep these values alive through biweekly team meetings, recognition programs, and quarterly in-person meetups. These touchpoints aren't just a checkbox—they're what keeps the team aligned, inspired, and focused on serving their clients with heart. Chelsey reminds us that culture isn't limited to the office—it's something we can build at home too. Whether in business or family life, values help create a positive legacy.
