When life feels heavy, what small choices can help you feel lighter? Shanelle had gone weeks without drinking and felt ready to face her emotions in therapy. But as therapy revealed deeper pain, she found herself returning to old habits. Meanwhile, Mary has been struggling with stress while caring for her aging mother. After hospital visits, she often finds herself reaching for a drink, but over time, she has realized it only makes her numb and unable to deal with her emotions. The murder of Lynette Dawson was a crime that unravelled in real-time via a podcast called The Teacher's Pet in 2018. It was a groundbreaking investigation. One that forced police to re-investigate things they'd filed away as unimportant decades prior.  Shanelle Dawson, Lynette's daughter, had already pieced together the truth before investigative journalist Hedley Thomas came knocking. But his podcast helped put her father behind bars.  Since then, Shanelle has released her own story, in her own words via a memoir called My Mother's Eyes. Here, I talk with my friend Jake McElfresh of Front Porch Step for his first interview in 8 years following a scandal that ruined his career in 2014.   I was a pop-punk kid back then and made an idol of music before Jesus, living by the mantra “music saved my life” and was into FPS, using it as a way to cope during a breakup as well as the death of my grandmother — so this is a full circle moment, now that we are both born again disciples of Jesus Christ.   In this discussion, he shares how he grew up, what his journey with God looked like throughout his life — how he was a “Christian," thinking that saying a sinner's prayer meant he would go to heaven — he describes how his parents divorce affected his perspective of women, and how he got into the music scene.   From there, he speaks on his Front Porch Step career, the depraved man he was, and the gritty details of the scandal. He so vulnerably and honestly shares how it all spiraled and ultimately sent him right to rock bottom, both personally and professionally.   But that is where Jesus met Him: at the end of himself. Much later, Jake felt the unconditional love of Christ for the first time, realizing that no matter what he did, God would love and forgive him.   Jake eventually surrendered in repentance, and laid it all at the foot of the cross, turning his life around by the grace of God. His walk with Jesus led him to his wife Shanelle. He tells us the intimate story of how they met, how he courted her, and how they eventually married.   Sharing Jake's story is about demonstrating what the gospel actually is, because his testimony shows the Heart of the Father. No one is beyond redemption.   What God has done in his life is the epitome of the old man being crucified, and the new man being resurrected in Christ.   When the carnal world offers no mercy, God offers mercy as we receive His Truth in faith. That is why Jesus' free gift of salvation is so precious.   Each of us needs a Savior that we are ALL EQUALLY undeserving to have. And yet, when we have Him, there is no condemnation. In their new report, Broke: How the Nonprofit and Philanthropic Sectors Are Talking About Poverty—And How We Can Do Better, they note, “The stories we're currently told about how the rich got rich, why the poor stay poor, and why people can't “move up” place the blame on individuals instead of systems. This creates a vast network of oppression, propping up business as usual and allowing the rich to remain rich, while others suffer.” Shanelle and Annie resolved to provide us with the tools we need to tell more accurate and liberating stories about poverty and wealth. This project was a collaboration between The Radical Communicators Network, the Center for Public Interest Communications, and the creative design agency Milli, and funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Shanelle is the Communications Director for the Movement for Black Lives, the founder of the Radical Communicators Network, and our first repeat guest! She was joined by Annie Neimand of Third Sector, who at the time was the Research Director at the Center for Public Interest Communications at the university of Florida in Gainesville and is the first relative of a previous guest (her uncle Rich) to appear on the show.   Shanelle and Annie had a great conversation with Eric about the research project they designed and their terrific new resource to advance new narratives about poverty and wealth.

It's been quite a while since we've sat across from a guest who lives so heavily in the social media comedy space; 84 episodes ago to be exact. Everybody loves a good laugh and within the last the last 5-10 years the internet has been completely undefeated. During that time, there have been some emerging talents within our own city who have made a name for themselves whether it be from online skits, stand-up, and even films. Amongst those names, one of the stand outs have been Derek Gaines who often goes by his alias "Amerika". Starting off with an assortment of hilarious skits with some of his friends, the Roxbury native was able to build a sizable following in and outside of The Commonwealth. Leaving home for growth worked in his favor as he's also been able to create some pretty cool relationships with other entertainers and even manages some of the day-to-day operations for Mona from "Dont Call Me White Girl" podcast (who was previously a co-host on Gillie & Wallo's "Million Dollars Worth Of Game" podcast).
