We’ll examine the trauma visited upon women of color that have experienced medical racism by unknowingly signing documentation allowing them to be sterilized, being coerced into doing so, or even going in for a common surgical procedure like gall bladder removal, only to find out afterward that they’ve been sterilized. Black, Native American, and Latin women widely distrust members of the medical community because of this type of barbarity. We will also discuss the issue of how our people account for 45% of HIV diagnoses and yet many of us lack awareness of our HIV status which only contributes to HIV risk. Not only are Black people more frequently diagnosed with HIV/AIDS, they are more likely to die from this disease than any other racial or ethnic group in the country.
