Alien: Earth director/DP Dana Gonzales reimagines a classic

The Cinematography Podcast Episode 324: Producer, Director, DP Dana Gonzales, ASC Dana Gonzales, ASC is a producer, director, and cinematographer known for his collaborations with visionary showrunner Noah Hawley on projects like Fargo and Legion. Dana has once again partnered with Hawley to bring the iconic sci-fi horror franchise to television with FX's Alien: Earth. Dana shares insights on his creative process, the challenges of honoring a cinematic legacy, his career path and the future of the industry. For Dana and Hawley, tackling the Alien universe was a formidable task. “You're taking on some strong material,” Dana explains. “The reason we're reimagining it is because it is so popular and loved and people want to see more.” The goal wasn't just to produce a new chapter, but to recreate the visceral feeling of the original. The team deliberately leaned into the aesthetic of the first two films, going so far as to create near-exact replicas of the original Alien spaceship Nostromo's sets for the new Maginot spacecraft. While the Xenomorph has become a familiar alien over nine films, Alien: Earth adds five new and dangerous creatures. The Xenomorph has its own story arc and development throughout the show. The new, eight-hour narrative format allows for a deeper exploration of the story and characters. “Not everyone has seen Alien that's seeing Alien: Earth,” Dana notes. The goal is to to tell a story that works for both new and existing fans. "As we go down the road, things will be different, we'll make different choices,” he adds. “But the key is to try to honor the original work. I feel like the audience depends on it. Episode 1 should feel like episode 8.” Dana and Hawley's deep respect for the source material extends to their technical approach. They wanted to capture the original film's sense of existential dread, a feeling heightened by the decision to have the ship crash on Earth. This plot point dictated Dana's plan for the camera work, with little coverage and long takes. They frequently stayed in a two-shot to maintain intimacy and tension. To further evoke the feel of the original, Alien: Earth was shot in 2.3:5 anamorphic, a first for the FX network. Hawley directed episodes one and five, with Dana serving as cinematographer to establish the look of the show. Dana stepped into the director's chair for episodes two, three, seven, and eight. “We can have honest conversations about what we want to do with these episodes,” Dana says. "We have a similar aesthetic.” Dana is also an executive producer on their joint projects, acting as a “creative executive producer” on set. In this role, he preps each episode, serves as the on-set decision-maker and manages second unit photography, ensuring the overall creative vision is maintained. The trust between Dana and Hawley is a fundamental part of their collaboration. They begin by building the world, finding images and discussing the story arc. This partnership, which began on Fargo, has evolved into a creative shorthand. “Noah is the creator, he knows what he wants to do,” Dana shares. “Our shorthand, we get to what the shows will look like and feel like in a very organic way in a few conversations.” Hawley's support allows Dana to push creative boundaries. “One of the most attractive things about this collaboration is that he's got my back and I could push things creatively,” he says. “I try things, I throw it out there, I do whatever. And I think he comes to expect that and likes that.” Dana first moved from cinematographer to director on the show Pretty Little Liars. As a cinematographer, he had strong ideas about camera placement and perspective, which he felt were central to storytelling. On directing, he advises, “You have to do the first one and you have to make mistakes.” Dana believes that a background as an episodic DP provides a unique advantage for directing. “As an episodic DP, you already understand working with different people,

What If the CIA and Weyland-Yutani Merged? (Spoiler: Everyone Dies) This week on the podcast, Alien: Earth Episode 5 and Episodes 3 & 4 of The Terminal List: Dark Wolf reviews. Episode Index Intro: 0:07 Alien Earth: The Terminal List: Alien: Earth (FX/Hulu) Episode 5 – “In Space, No One…” Summary: A flashback shows the events that occurred on the Maginot starting seventeen days before it reached Earth. Junior security officer Clem wakes Morrow from cryosleep and tells him there has been a fire in one of the containment rooms. Two facehuggers have escaped and latched upon ship’s captain Dinsdale and science officer Bronski. Dinsdale dies from the facehugger’s acid blood when medical officer Rahim attempts to cut the tail from his neck. After being told by engineer Shmuel that the ship’s navigational systems were also damaged in the fire, Morrow concludes that a crew member has sabotaged the ship. Executive officer Zaveri assumes command of the ship, but Morrow threatens to relieve her if she does not prioritize the creatures above the crew. Bronski is placed in cryo-sleep to prevent the gestation of the Xenomorph, but this fails. In science officer Chibuzo’s lab, one leech specimen manages to open its test tube from the inside, and lays its larvae in her water bottle. Witnessing this, the Ocellus also escapes after Chibuzo fails to seal its containment vessel. Apprentice engineer Malachite drinks the water, and the larvae kill him from the inside; Chibuzo and Rahim are also killed by their defensive toxic gas when trying to extract them. Witnessing this, Zavari is in shock and Morrow relieves her of command. After being interrogated by Morrow, navigator Teng is killed by the fully-grown Xenomorph. Chief engineer Petrovich is revealed to be behind the sabotage at the order of Boy Kavalier, who promises him a hybrid body if the ship crashes in Prodigy territory. Petrovich kills Clem and is in turn killed by Morrow, who retreats to the control room and seals himself in. Zaveri is killed by the Xenomorph outside the door. With everyone dead, Morrow locks himself in the panic room and awaits the crash. Back in the present, Morrow meets with Yutani, offering to retrieve the specimens by force and kill Kavalier. Writer/Director: Written and directed by Noah Hawley Cast Highlights: Richa Moorjani (Zaveri), Sandra Yi Sencindiver (Yutani), Amir Boutrous (Rahim), Karen Aldridge (Chibuzo), Michael Smiley (Shmuel), Jamie Bisping (Malachite), Andy Yu (Teng), Max Rinehart (Bronski), Enzo Cilenti (Petrovich), Tom Moya (Clem). Air Date & Stats: Aired September 2, 2025, on FX and FX on Hulu. Duration: 64 minutes. Viewership: ~0.361 million households; 0.10 rating (18–49 demo). Style & Reception: Critics lauded its homages to Ridley Scott's original Alien, elevated tension, and emotional depth. Called a “banger” and “standout” bottle episode. Out of 5 In Space, No One… Hears You in the Loving Embrace of a Facehugger Darryl: 4.15/5 Brian: 4.28/5 The Terminal List: Dark (Amazon Prime) Episode 3 – “What’s Past Is Prologue” Summary: Vahid and Cyrus Rahimi attend a conference on the Iranian nuclear agreement in Geneva, and later meet with Minister Yousef Saedi. Farooq, Landry, and another CIA officer, Ish Reinhart, join Haverford’s team. Danawi’s phone shows he received $5 million in cryptocurrency to deliver to Balaz Molnar, a nuclear physics professor in Budapest. Texts come through from another number identified as Thana Haddad. Farooq questions her and discovers she is Danawi’s estranged daughter, but can’t bring himself to follow orders to kill her. Varon agrees not to tell the others after he confesses that, as a teenager, his sisters were raped by Uday Hussein, but he later helped the Americans in eliminating him. Edwards and Perash bond, but he becomes more estranged from his wife stateside. Impersonating Danawi, Farooq meets with Molnar and purchases proof of concept for proprietary bearings he is selling to Iran, which will enable them to still enrich uranium with the smaller number of centrifuges mandated by the nuclear deal. A third-party team tail Farooq after the meeting until he is extracted by Landry, and one kills Reinhart. Edwards has Varon cut CCTV and guns the man down on the Budapest Metro, taking a photo for identification before being extracted himself. Writer & Director: Directed by Liz Friedlander, written by Naomi Iizuka and Max Adams. Cast Highlights: Taylor Kitsch (Ben Edwards), Tom Hopper (Raife Hastings), Chris Pratt (James Reece), Rona‑Lee Shimon (Eliza Perash), Dar Salim (Mo Farooq), Rashidz Tzarfati (Tal Varon), Robert Wisdom (Jed Haverford), among others. Air Date: Premiered August 27, 2025 alongside Episodes 1 & 2. Episode 4 – “The Sound of the Guns” Summary: Hastings is contacted by a former Selous Scouts associate of his father, who confirms Haverford manages a long-term asset in Tehran codenamed Shepherd. Minister Saedi thanks Cyrus for his clandestine work, but Vahid begins to question their actions of putting nuclear weapons in the hands of such men. The team relocates to Munich, discovering the third party is the nuclear proliferation Khalid Network, working to move the bearings into Iran before the nuclear deal is finalised. Haverford plans to intercept the convoy in Geneva and swap Molnar's bearings for fakes, rendering Iran's new facility useless. He assures a suspicious Hastings that Shepherd’s intel is legitimate. Edwards and Perash kiss whilst scouting a location. Varon secures the fake bearings from Mossad agent Mordechai Ofer. Hastings becomes concerned about collateral damage with the convoy ambush plan and Edwards’ change in attitude. Edwards argues their current posting allows them to take real action compared to serving under military red tape. Haverford kills Molnar. Impersonating Austrian Federal Police, the team attacks the Khalid Network convoy and obtains the bearings, but are met by a large team of shooters on exfil. Farooq is injured and extracted by Landry. The Israelis betray the team, hacking Haverford's phone and stealing the bearings after incapacitating Edwards. The Alien franchise is certainly alive and kicking and testing out a new space on the small screen with a television show set 2 years before the original film. Tonight after a bit of a break, I'm back looking at episodes 2 & 3! |   "Mr October" Tensions build between corporations and the Prodigy company as a crashed spaceship is investigated by a Prodigy medic, Joe D. Hermit, and soldiers. After discovering bodies infected by an alien entity, they encounter a Xenomorph, which separates Hermit and forces him into a perilous chase. Meanwhile, Prodigy's CEO discusses the goal of creating a rival to artificial intelligence with the new Hybrids, and Wendy, a Hybrid, seeks her lost brother, only to have a secret revealed that confirms her identity to a shocked Hermit. | "Metamorphosis" Wendy rescues her brother Joe from a Xenomorph, who then decapitates the creature, while the rest of the Lost Boys and their overseer, Kirsh, retrieve valuable alien specimens from the crashed Maginot vessel. Meanwhile, a conflict brews between different factions, including Boy Kavalier and the Weyland-Yutani company, for control of the recovered aliens and their research, hinting at a future struggle for power.

On this episode of Bingeworthy, host Mike DeAngelo is joined by writer, director, and showrunner Noah Hawley ("Fargo," "Legion") to discuss his new FX series, "Alien: Earth." The highly anticipated prequel series debuted August 12th and runs through September 23rd, delivering a bold new chapter in the iconic sci-fi horror franchise. Set in a future Earth, the story follows a young woman and a band of tactical hybrid misfits who uncover a terrifying secret after a mysterious spacecraft crash-lands in their corporate territory, forcing them into direct conflict with everyone's favorite killer, acid-blooded alien species and much more. The series stars Sydney Chandler, Alex Lawther, Samuel Blenkin, Babou Ceesay, and Timothy Olyphant.READ MORE: ‘Alien: Earth' Review: Noah Hawley Matches Ridley Scott's Classic In A Terrifically Smart, Engaging & Terrifying Sci-Fi Horror SeriesThe show takes place only two years prior to the events of "Alien," and Hawley made doubly sure his series felt instantly familiar to fans of the original. “People have to watch it in the first five minutes and go, this is Alien,” Hawley said. That meant using the actual Nostromo blueprints to design the Maginot ship and opening the series just like Scott's 1979 film—with the crew waking up, smoking, eating, and overlapping their conversations. “It has to feel authentic,” Hawley stressed.

Episode 5 of Alien: Earth takes us back to the beginning. We wondered when we'd see the crew of the Maginot again and here they are, revealed in all their flawed, incompetent glory. An episode that details how we got from the first 10 minutes of episode 1 (everyone wakes up and banters over breakfast) to 20 minutes later in episode 1 (everyone dies). It's classic Alien basically - a crew of increasingly panicked humans being picked off one-by-one, either by deadly extra-terrestrials or their own stupidity. We also learn more about the backstory of Security Officer Morrow, plus a dramatic twist reveals the true cause of the Maginot's 'accidental' plummet into Prodigy territory on Earth. It's one heck of an episode and sets things up nicely for the final three episodes of the season. Jay of the Dead is joined by Dr. Walking Dead, GregaMortis, and Mackula. These intrepid, stellar podcasters endeavor to explore a deep-dive into Alien Universe timelines, ship-building lore, and the narrative tightrope walk between central arcs and peripheral details. Jay, Dr. Bishop, GregaMortis and Mackula engage in an esoteric and nerdy discussion that veers from the confusing release-versus-story order of the Alien Universe to the corporate fingerprints of Weyland and Yutani on iconic vessels like the Prometheus, Nostromo, and Maginot. The crew weighs in on how fans can critically balance attention between the show's main story and its subtle background details, with Mackula revisiting his “bridge episode” critique and GregaMortis defending the layered storytelling. And yes, beware — major plot spoilers abound! From squid eyeballs capable of brain-hijacking to Wendy's psychic link with the xenomorph language, the hosts unpack the latest terrors and teases while speculating about synthetic-human hybrids and the future of Kirsch, Timothy Olyphant's pivotal character. The crew contemplates whether xenomorphs can bond emotionally; hints at shadowy corporate wars, circa 2119 – 2120; and discusses unsettling implications of transferring consciousness between alien, human, and synthetic. While pacing frustrations and cliffhanger-heavy storytelling drew some critique, ratings remained high… And though Mackula declined to score, he acknowledged the setup for big payoffs ahead. As the threat of war began to loom in the 1930s, an elaborate system of fortifications sprung up in northeastern France. Known as the Maginot line, this string of defences was designed to protect the nation in the event of an invasion by Nazi Germany. So, when Hitler's forces did invade, how much blame should the Maginot Line shoulder for the fall of France in double-quick time? That's a question that's troubled historians ever since the traumatic events of 1940. In conversation with Spencer Mizen, Kevin Passmore explores why the line has become a symbol of a nation's collective failure to face the challenges of the modern world (Ad) Kevin Passmore is the author of The Maginot Line: A New History (Yale). Atom Eins questions Smee and Slightly about their encounter with Morrow. Having escaped into New Siam, Morrow calls Yutani and insists on retrieving the specimens despite being ordered to return home. Curly confronts Kavalier about his favoritism towards Wendy, believing herself to be the best hybrid. Morrow contacts Slightly via the embedded device, convincing him to be his friend. Kirsh, Tootles, and Curly dissect a facehugger and introduce its larvae to Hermit’s lung, removed during surgery. Wendy awakens, seemingly intercepting signals from the Xenomorph eggs, which cause her pain. She ultimately collapses in the laboratory containing the eggs. Episode Index Intro: 0:07 Alien: Earth:12:30 Alien: Earth (FX/Hulu) Out of 10 When Your Child Downloads Feelings, and Your Pet Alien Downloads You Darryl: 6.8/10 Brian: 7.34/10 Episode 1 – “Neverland” Summary: In 2120, five companies control Earth and the colonized Solar System, including the recently founded Prodigy Corporation. The USCSS Maginot, a Weyland-Yutani C-class deep space research vessel, approaches Earth after a 65-year expedition to obtain extra-terrestrial specimens, among them facehuggers. On Earth, at Prodigy’s Neverland research island, a terminally ill child named Marcy Hermit becomes the first hybrid, having her consciousness transferred to an adult synthetic, and renames herself Wendy. Adjusting to her new body with the assistance of synthetic mentor Kirsh, Wendy oversees several other children who undergo the procedure. A malfunction compromises the Maginot’s navigation, placing it on a collision course with Earth. Some specimens get loose, and a grown Xenomorph kills most of the crew. It crashes into a tower in Prodigy City, New Siam, where Wendy’s human brother Joe Hermit works as a medic and corporate soldier. CEO Boy Kavalier asserts that Maginot’s contents now belong to Prodigy, and deploys Kirsh, Wendy, and the other hybrids to assist with search and rescue to test their enhanced capabilities. Security officer Morrow, who survived the crash in a reinforced panic room, moves to protect the cargo and detains two Prodigy soldiers, who are killed by a leech-like specimen. Wendy remarks to Kirsh that she wants to save her brother from death. Writer & Director: Crafted and helmed by series creator Noah Hawley. Cast: Sydney Chandler as Wendy, the first hybrid (a person who has their human consciousness transferred into a synthetic body) and Joe’s sister, formerly known as Marcy Florence Bensberg as Marcy, a terminally ill 11-year-old, and Wendy’s original human form Alex Lawther as Private Joseph D. Hermit, a medic for the Prodigy Corporation Security Service, and Wendy’s brother Essie Davis as Dame Sylvia, an employee of the Prodigy Corporation and Arthur’s wife Samuel Blenkin as Boy Kavalier, the CEO of the Prodigy Corporation and the world’s youngest trillionaire Babou Ceesay as Morrow, the USCSS Maginot’s cyborg (human with some synthetic parts) security officer Adarsh Gourav as Slightly, a hybrid Rishi Kuppa as Aarush, a terminally ill 12-year-old from Mumbai, and Slightly’s original human form Erana James as Curly, a hybrid Lily Newmark as Nibs, a hybrid Jonathan Ajayi as Smee, a hybrid David Rysdahl as Arthur Sylvia, a scientist and Dame Sylvia’s husband Diêm Camille as Siberian, a Prodigy Corporation Security Service soldier Moe Bar-El as Rashidi, a Prodigy Corporation Security Service soldier Adrian Edmondson as Atom Eins, a senior employee of the Prodigy Corporation Timothy Olyphant as Kirsh, the Prodigy Corporation’s synthetic chief scientist, who serves as Wendy’s mentor and trainer Air Date: August 12, 2025—simultaneously on FX and FX on Hulu. Rating & Viewership: Nielsen: Approx. 0.589 million U.S. households; 0.11 share among 18–49 demographic. Critical reception: overwhelmingly positive—IGN praised its franchise integration, Vulture gave a perfect 5/5 stars, Collider rated it 9/10, TV Fanatic also 5/5. Episode 2 – “Mr. October” Summary: Boy tells his colleague, Dame Sylvia, that he formed the Hybrid project to compete with artificial intelligence, and has granted Wendy additional abilities as he wishes to create a person smarter than him. He declines Weyland-Yutani’s request to secure Maginot’s proprietary contents, warning any incursion on his territory will be considered a hostile act. Joe is chased by a Xenomorph and separated from his colleagues. It tracks him to the higher floors of the tower, killing another soldier and massacring an apartment of wealthy residents who refused to evacuate. He is saved by Morrow, who tasers him and the Xenomorph, but it regains consciousness and escapes after killing numerous other soldiers, sparing Morrow. Arriving in Prodigy City, Hybrids Tootles, Smee, Nibs, and Curly encounter two other dangerous extraterrestrial specimens. Wendy locates her brother with Slightly, a fellow Hybrid, but Joe does not recognize her. Slightly reveals her true identity to a shocked Joe, who believed Wendy/Marcy had died. The three encounter several Xenomorph eggs and are ordered by Kirsh to contain them until a HazMat team arrives. Joe is dragged away by the Xenomorph, and Wendy chases after. Writer & Director: Written by Noah Hawley and directed by EP Dana Gonzales.

What do our priorities reveal about our faith? Jesse Cope tackles this challenging question by examining how we spend our evening downtime and what we choose to pursue each day. Drawing from a powerful quote by Jordan Peterson — "If you say yes to something, you pursue it" — Jesse challenges listeners to consider what they're saying "yes" and "no" to in their daily lives. The podcast takes a fascinating historical turn by exploring what Jesse calls the "Maginot mind" of pre-WWII France. Through excerpts from Manchester's biography of Churchill, he draws striking parallels between France's reluctance to confront Nazi Germany and America's current approach to defending Christian principles against ideological attacks. While the French had the excuse of extreme war fatigue, Americans today are simply "playing not to lose" rather than "playing to win" when it comes to preserving our foundational values. At the heart of the episode is a moving exploration of George Washington's personal prayer journal. These intimate prayers reveal a founding father deeply committed to Christian faith, who sought God's guidance not just for himself but for his family, friends, and country. Jesse powerfully challenges the modern narrative that America's founders intended to create a secular government: "Why would he want God to be the God of his country and then not want God involved in the country at all?"Through readings from Matthew Chapter 1 and practical advice for breaking screen addiction, Jesse weaves together spiritual wisdom, historical perspective, and practical application. He reminds listeners that our priorities should follow a clear order — God, spouse, family, country — and that what we leave behind matters. Washington's prayer journal serves as a powerful reminder that our legacy isn't just what we achieve, but how faithfully we pursue what truly matters.Whether you're struggling with digital distraction, wondering about America's spiritual heritage, or simply seeking to realign your priorities, this episode offers both challenging questions and encouraging guidance for the journey back to faith.Support the showThe American Soul Podcasthttps://www.buzzsprout.com/1791934/subscribe

In January 2014, a strange article appeared in the Indianapolis Star about Latoya Ammons, an Indiana single mother of three who claimed that for more than a year, she and her children were besieged by demons in their rented home. Ammons claimed, among other things, that the house was constantly infested with black flies, the children were levitated from their beds, and her nine-year-son became possessed and walked up a wall backwards. And that was only the beginning; by the end of just one year in the house, the Ammons family claim they were terrorized by all manner of supernatural assaults, from ghostly apparitions to demonic entities. Latoya Ammons' story might well have gone unnoticed, had it not been for the surprising number of witnesses to the paranormal events, from family and friends to police officers and social workers. Still, Latoya was not without her critics or skeptics—some accused her of fabricating the story to get out of her lease, while others assumed she was simply delusional. Regardless of the explanation for the cause of the events, there's no denying that Latoya Ammons story is one of the most terrifying paranormal experiences heard in decades.Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesBiddle, Kenny. 2018.

In the early days of facebook Mark Zuckerburg would wander into the company bathrooms and if he noticed someone sitting down in the stalls he would pop his head over and try to talk to them about their projects. Or if he was taking a poop he would host an emergency meeting and he would tell them to come over and pop their head over the stall to talk it out. Everyone just went along with it because it was either YOLO SILICON VALLEY LMAO or they were just too intimidated. That all stopped when Michael Moritz, legendary silicon valley investor, and one of Facebook biggest early investors and shareholders, was at the campus doing research for leading a 2nd round of funding. He was doing diligence all day and at one point had to poop and that's when Zuckerburg popped his head over with a smile to ask how's the diligence coming along. Michael Moritz, not one to mince words, was apoplectic. 'GET THE FUCK OUT HERE YOU IDiOT LIZARD LOOKING FUCKER.' Mark Zuckerburg nervously tried to laugh it off and persisted, because he really loved intimate poop conversations 'Aw c'mon Michael, it's silicon valley'. Zuckerburg finally withdrew when Moritz flung a poop at him. 30 minutes later, Mark was in a very import meeting when Moritz walked into the conference room. 'Everyone except Mark Zuckerburg, OUT'. As intimidated as they were of Zuckerburg, at the time Moritz was the bigger deal, and they all scurried out of the room. Zuckerburg, however, is not one to be intimated by anyone. Not the Winkewoz twins, not Eduardo Savarn, not Peter Thiel, and not one of his biggest shareholder Michael Moritz. Zuckerburg passionately defended his practice, but Michael Moritz was having none of that. Moritz told him that it was a ticking PR and HR catastrophe, and threatened to pull out of leading the 2nd round of funding if Mark continued, which would have been a calamity for the company. Zuckerburg pretended to arbitrate 'Ok fine, but you need to give me a good reason'. Moritz was flabberghasted at this response. Was this a serious question? He answered with the most obvious answer 'Because it's not FUCKING NORMAL'. Unknown to Moritz, Zuckerburg had guessed a conversation like this would happen as soon as he was kicked out of the toilet stall, and began formulating a strategy to counter Moritz demands. Zuckerburg knew that Moritz would have all the leverage, but Zuckerburg was a master strategist. Zuckerburg went for the pounce. 'Okay, I'll lets write out an agreement, in writing I'll rescind the policy because it's not normal'. Moritz was dumbfounded, but he was used to being dumbfounded by eccentric tech founders, afterall he was also an early investor in Apple, and he still found Zuckerburg tame compared to Steve Jobs. Moritz had a long day of work so they signed the agreement so that he could go back to doing his due diligence. When Moritz left, a broad grin spread across Zuckerburg's face. " 'Not Normal' eh? " Zuckerburg said with a menacing laugh. Ever since then, Mark Zuckerburg has been on a life-long crusade to normalize poop conversations. He had a checklist of what he needed to accomplish in order to realize this. His advisors would tell him it's impossible, but one by one Zuckerburg checked off the list. From trusting Mark with their private photos, to normalizing people giving up their internet browsing privacy. In 2015, Zuckerburg knew he would hit a wall, having people watch you while you poop was still too much of a leap. That's when Zuckerburg decided to buy Occulus, and eventually shift his company towards virtual reality. If he could coax people into having life-like conversations while they were pooping in a virtual reality, then doing it in the real world wouldn't be too big of a leap. Zuckerburg only has 3 more boxes to check off before poop conversations are normalized. Mark Zuckerburg wants to watch you poop. Are you going to let him?   Yeah I said it. You might be offended. You've probably heard this a thousand times before, but believe me you will hear it again. Because it's deserved. You're French. A parasite. A slug. A leech. A failure. But, of course, you may think I don't have evidence to justify this. But you are wrong, as always, your failures stand out like a shining pile of manure among your pristine neighbors. So let me begin. First off, your cuisine. Dogshit. What have you got? Spoiled milk that smells like shit. Okay what else? Alcohol because you need to drown yourself in wine to escape your life. Sounds right. Frog legs? Snails? Yeah, that seems about right for you. But cusine doesn't matter compared to your successes or lack thereof. What is you history? A long, long list of failures and losses. So let's start off. The Gauls getting invaded and conquered by the Romans before getting conquered by the Germanic tribes. Getting invaded by the Vikings and forced to give up Normandy to them. You might say you conquered England, but no, those were the Normans who were Viking descendants and actually fucking useful. The Hundred Years' War. Which you lost. You even needed God to send you a warrior to try to save your sorry ass. Then what? Following the Spanish and Portuguese discovered to the New World and being kicked out of all the good land to an icy tundra. Server you right. Brutally enslaving people in Haiti? No surprise. And then proceeding to demand reputations for their revolt, which you failed to stop, until the mid 20th century, which was what kept your country barley afloat. Then your rulers were so incompetent they were all killed and you had a revolt. Then Napoleon, who wasn't even born in modern French territory, cause you lost it, and then proceeded to lose. And then you were appointed a monarch by Britain. You even had to sell most of your territory in America, which you couldn't develop or protect, to the U.S. Then WW1 were with the help of all the allied nations you barley managed to stop the Germans from getting to Paris. Then you built the Maginot line because you knew you couldn't stop them normally but you built it where they didn't even attack last time and didn't finish it. Then they attacked around it, surprised, and you were turned into a puppet nation of the Nazi surrendering almost immediately. Hell, French guards were some of Hitlers last men. It took the combined forces of all of the Allies to actually help you and kick the Nazis out for you. You've had so, so may revolutions since then because of your incompetence. You want to talk about shootings in the U.S? Well how about your history of bloodshed violence and failure. Unrest? Look at all your riots. Hell, at one point your naval flag was a white flag. TF2? Yeah you play spy cause you can't even fight correctly. What are you known for? Failure. Justly, you are losers, and always will be. Go fuck yourselves and become a decent country like your neighbors. But that's not all. Speaking of your neighbors, let's look at their successes. Spain and Portugal actually have good food and managed to colonize almost the entirety of South and Central America, conquering Empires and making a name. Britain, controlling almost a 1/4 of the land on Earth and kicking your ass almost every time. Germany, the heart of the E.U, able to fight against the entirety of Europe twice in a row, the Holy Roman Empire, fighting and controlling the Pope? Inventing Lutheranism and the printing press? Oh how about Poland, the winged Hussars, all of them coming together to fend off the Ottomans and Mongols. Italy, with some of the best cuisine in the world, the Roman Empire, which kicked your ass, the Pope, the Church, Florence, Rome, incredibly important. All of them so, so much better than you. Of course, you might say the past is no indication of the future. And you have a bit of a point. But really, what have you done? There is a short, short list of deeds in which you have not failed. You have an unstable, failing government. You have a weaker military than UK, U.S, China, etc, etc. You are by far the weakest member on the UN Security Council, an unfunny joke, a gag. Your economy is weaker than any of these good nations. Your “luxury” products suck and and overpriced shit shows. Culturally, you have jack shit. You seem to have missed out on the Renaissance and basically every other period of advancement. Ethically, you hate migrants, in fact you hate everyone. Your national anthem is so fucking baton is listing despite having nothing to be proud of, talking about using countries as fertilizer, yeah bud that's not going to happen. One thing you did good was have nuclear energy, but your government realized its mistake in doing something halfway fucking decent for once and is now removing power plants and nuclear energy. So fuck off. You are a failure without anything good to say for yourself. Not one accomplishment. Nobody wants you. They pity you for the whole you've dug yourself in. You will not get my respect or sympathy. So leave, and never come back.

Maybe I'm the only one that this happens to. But I kind of doubt it. As a matter of fact,  in observing other people I see this…. well we'll call it a flaw…. in others, making me believe I'm not the only one. For me, because of the way my mind works, I often expect something to be a certain way or I expect something to be at a specific location.  And when things are other than what I expect,  I'm completely out of whack.  I'm Coach Streb and on this episode of the old man's podcast I'm going to talk about what I believe is a common occurrence that throws us off our game and messes us up in life. I'm going to call it  Tunnel Vision.  Heed my warning, missing the obvious can be a real setback for any of us. It's spring and for me that's garden season.  I love planting a vegetable garden and harvesting peppers, tomatoes, green beans, onions, lettuce and all sorts of produce out of my very own garden.  breakfast in the morning with green peppers out of the garden 15 minutes old It's a point of pride when you produce something from your own efforts.  Yes I'm sure it's more healthy as well. I can control what insecticides and fertilizers and what not that my produce is subjected to.  That's a nice feature. But, mostly it's the feeling that I made something.  I always felt like coaching was a little bit like gardening. To build a successful program/a competitive team and help individuals reach their potential I had to do gardening type things.  Put the athletes Into a position where they could grow….. a fertile soil.  When they are very young seedlings (new to the sport), you have to take care of them.  Water them regularly, provide nutrition, protect them from them harm the insects, fungus little critters can do.  And if you take good care of them…. weed out the things that don't belong, not all but many will grow to be productive.  You can apply this thinking of metaphor gardening to whatever it is that you do.  In metaphor gardening, weather that is raising children or building a program or business or whatever it is that you do, you follow those steps and you will be on the road to success.  But in real life gardening, you have enemies. Sure you have competition metaphorically speaking in the gardening of your profession or in your personal life. But I'm talking about enemies that want to ruin you, I don't think we have a lot of that….. I hope we don't have a lot of that in our professional or personal lifes. In real life gardening critters like squirrels and rabbits in particular they are the enemy.  We've been at the current place we live for 7 years now and I've yet to have a decent harvest. Gotten some green beans, and I did have some real nice eggplants. But two of my favorites are yet to be born here where we live now.  That is tomatoes and peppers. Rabbits get in and chew my pepper plants down as soon as I put them in the ground to just a little bit of a nub, sometimes all overnight.  And the tomatoes, squirrels……….  evil squirrels. They'll get in there and pull the baby green ones off the plant and carry them onto my deck where I can see them out the window eatting them while they're looking at me the whole time.  Rabbits are at least considerate enough to not show up when you're around they're sneaky squirrels are arrogant and devious. I hate them. So this year I've upped my game compared to what I've doned in the past for squirrel repellent.  I've used that powder you sprinkle on the ground,  it's supposed to keep the rabbits and deer away…and I've got news for you that doesn't work. At least not with the critters I'm dealing with here.  So this year I constructed a Maginot line if you don't know what that means then you should have stayed awake in history class.  --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theoldmanspodcast/message
