On this episode of the Paul Weller Fan Podcast, we dive in to the memories of Pete Mason.Pete spent 17 years working for both major and independent record labels in the UK including Polydor, Phonogram, Chrysalis, Go! Discs and Independiente, which saw him involved with album & single releases from many of the UK's finest artists including The La's, Billy Bragg, Portishead, The Beautiful South, Travis, and two of his all-time music heroes John Martyn and Paul Weller. While at Independiente Paul Weller invited Pete to work as Executive Producer on his live solo acoustic album Days Of Speed. The acoustic, double live album featured songs from across Paul's career including The Jam classics; That's Entertainment and Town Called Malice, The Style Council's Headstart For Happiness and Down In The Seine and solo hits such as You Do Something To Me and Wild Wood. The album was released in 2001 and reached no.3 in the UK album charts which earned him a platinum disc for his efforts.Pete also brought the legendary singer-songwriter and guitarist, John Martyn, to the Go! Discs label and then later to the Independiente label where he worked with John on four albums in an artist liaison role.In 2004 Pete left the UK and moved to Wisconsin, USA, and set up Solid Air Music which includes a project recording studio where he has spent time composing his musical ideas and working with local artists, helping them to record and produce their music. Welcome to Cartoon Cosmonauts - a podcast all about animated short films and their creators. I'm your host Joseph Orr and each week features a new guest giving us the lowdown on their approach to making animation. This week's guest is Pete Mason and we'll be discussing his short animated film "Melchior Strasse". It's a voyeuristic tale of one man's misguided quest to create life. It's a beautiful film with some real classic Frankenstein undertones. I would encourage you to watch it first and then follow along as we discuss it in the podcast. If you'd like to get in touch with Pete or check out some of his amazing behind-the-scenes content, best place to find him is on Facebook as Pete Mason or watch his work on his Vimeo account. If you'd like to get in touch with me, for feedback, questions or even to come on the show to discuss your own short, you can find me online as Speak Broccoli on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube.

Missed opportunities. Everyone’s had at least one. when it comes to Phish, there’s always the one that got away. The show you decided to skip because you had a test the next day. The one that was just too far away to make it back before work. The one you slept on getting tickets for and couldn’t find an extra. Hopefully, it doesn’t happen too often…but unfortunately it does happen And with Phish, it’s the worst feeling in the world when those shows become all-timers. For me, there were two that fit this category: 12/30/97 at MSG–the legendary “Harpua” and the 45-minute encore–and 2/28/03 at the Nassau Coliseum–one of the best “Tweezers” ever played and the long awaited return of the biggest Phish bustout of them all: “Destiny Unbound.”When I was deep into The Phish Compendium and The Pharmer’s Almanac (Vol. 4), the impression was that “Destiny Unbound” was the great white whale of Phish setlists. Played frequently in the early 90s and then shelved, it developed a cult following and old-school fans clamored for its return. When Trey suggested that the band would play it again if all the fans in the front row sang the first line at the same time, leave it to Phish fans to take him up on it at Red Rocks and the Hampton Coliseum in the mid- and late-90s, respectively. Denied, the song stayed on the shelf. As I learned more and more about the Phish mythos, the prospect of “Destiny Unbound” greatly interested me. I found it difficult to track down a recording of the song, and so for many years I had no idea what it actually sounded like. It wasn’t until the February 2003 “return tour” that the concept of actually hearing “Destiny” came back to me.I was a junior in college at the time at SUNY Buffalo. My roommate and I had tickets to see the band in Cincinnati and passed on the opportunity to fly home to see the show a week later at the Nassau Coliseum. In retrospect, it would have been fairly easy to attend. We had plenty of friends going who could find us extras; back when JetBlue was still fairly new on the scene, you could get a round trip flight from BUF to JFK for about $100; plus, it was college–missing a day or two of classes was far from an emergency. But we were so jazzed about the road trip to Cincinatti that we saw the Nassau show as an adventure that we didn’t need to take.Bummer.When I saw the setlist after it was played, my jaw dropped. “Destiny Unbound?” They played it? REALLY? ? And I missed it. At the time, I figured it was my only opportunity. As you can hear in earlier episodes of Attendance Bias with Slade Sohmer of The Recount and Pete Mason of PhanArt, we talked about how setlists in 2.0 were fairly predictable with few exceptions. Two of those exceptions were their show in Burgettstown, PA in the summer of 2003, and this show at the Nassau Coliseum that February. Phish broke their own mold. They played, at that time, what felt like the ultimate bust out. Maybe not in terms of “number of shows since it was last played,” but in terms of community relevance–it felt like I had missed some sort of cosmic event that only occurs once every 500 years; a special eclipse or passing of an obscure comet. The fact that it was played in my hometown venue only added salt to the wound.Pretty dramatic, yes.Luckily the band brought “Destiny” back into the rotation for 3.0. The simple tale of Highway Bill and Highway Jill doesn’t pop up frequently, but at least it’s in the cards. Those of us who absorbed the band’s history and self-referential universe knows that it’s special every time it’s played, simply because there were decades when that wasn’t the case. For me, the sense of closure finally came when the band played it at the 2010 summer tour closer at one of my hometown venues, Jones Beach Amphitheater.
If you've been into the Phish scene for any amount of time, you've heard of, or been to a PhanArt show. For years, artists have creators have sold their wares outside of venues but it wasn't until relatively recently that they've had a localized, organized location to set up shop. And who got this whole shebang organized? Pete Mason--otherwise known as PhanArt Pete. For today's episode of Attendance Bias, Pete chose Phish's legendary show on 7/29/03 at the Starlake Amphitheater in Burgettestown, Pennsylvania. This show was a major peak of Phish's 2.0 era, and if you weren't around at the time, it's hard to communicate just how crazy and unexpected the setlist was. Filled with rarities, bustouts, and era-defining jams, it was a show that went deep. For today's show, I would like to emphasize two things:For every download and listen today's show gets through Friday 11/20, I will donate $1 to Trey's Divided Sky Fund, up to $500. The donation will be made during The Beacon Jams on 11/20.Pete is not letting the coronavirus pandemic get in the way of connecting artists to their fans. There will be a virtual PhanArt show this coming Saturday, 11/14 at PhanArt.net. More info available at that site. Please don't forget to share, rate, and review Attendance Bias wherever you get your podcasts. Enjoy! This week's audio: 7/29/03 @ Star Lake Amphitheater, Burgettstown, PA

Welcome to this month's GPS Training podcast, it's our 14th episode. As always, we are streaming it live on Facebook So if you want to see what we all look like take a look at our Facebook page. So, without further ado let's get on with today's podcast …… It's our 14th podcast. In today's podcast we are going to look and discuss the following – 1. We interview Tom from Garmin, as we get hands on the Garmin GPSMAP66s for the first time. 2. TOPO PRO mapping – to route or not to route 3. Other interesting activities people are using outdoor GPS units for 4. We have Andy's top tips - both Garmin and SatMap 5. And then finally we will announce the winner of last months podcast 1. Garmin's GPSMAP66s – at last! Last week Tom, from Garmin sales came and spent 24 hours with us and he brought with him the new GPSMAP66s from Garmin. Here is our chat with him. 2. TOPO PRO mapping – to route or not to route I know we have mentioned it in past Podcasts but we are still getting a number of questions over the phone regarding the TOPO PRO mapping from Garmin. It is a little confusing I think it is the ‘TOPO' that is throwing people. So Andy, what is it? 1. OS mapping, not TOPO mapping (e.g. Topo Light, Topo Active) 2. It has turn by turn off road data within National Parks 3. You can get both 1:50k and 1:25k in the TOPO PRO versions To find out more about the Garmin GPS units please go to our website – gpstarining.co.uk – click on – gps store – then choose the category you want on the left-hand side – 1:50k, 1:25k 3 – Some common activities and less common activities that people are using GPS units for As you will be aware most of the GPS units we sell and train people to use are used for walking and cycling but what other activities are people using them for? - Horse Riding - Sea Kayaking - Skiing - Trail Riders, we have talked about this in a past podcast - Surveys (wildlife, surveys for work) - Geocaching, we have had Pete Mason, from the Podcach show on a past podcast – Episode 4 - Mountaineering 4. Andy's Top Tips Andrew Wallington has kindly written to us with his top tip – Good Morning, First of all thank you for your podcasts, site information and videos. I have only been walking and hiking for the past 2 years and being of "mature years" I have a lot to learn. I learn a lot from Andy's top tips and would like to add my own. My route this week was about 25 miles in mid-Wales which I intended to do over 2 days but having completed 13 miles and getting to the bus stop for my return an hour early I decided to complete the whole walk that day. The weather was great and I felt capable of finishing even though I have never walked this far in one go. Sunset was due at 18.30 which gave me time to finish in daylight I thought. - I had not taken fatigue into account. A bright clear day started to cloud over so reducing light My Satmap was getting low on battery as the route required me to constantly check my position. I did not have a power back up as I intended to finish by midafternoon. I did not have a torch for the same reason. The last half mile was downhill through a very thick wood so there was little or no light in places even though there was light outside. This was not good for trip hazards. I am sure that as seasoned walkers you would not make my mistakes but it seems that there are more people walking now and lots of us are novices. So my top tips to myself are: 1) Never overstretch myself. Fatigue sets in quickly 2) Always carry a power back up source for my navigating device even on short walks in case of battery failure. 3) Carry a torch all year round. Powerful torches do not have to be heavy. Maps are useless in the dark. Having said all that, the sense of achievement of walking 25 miles in one go and at the same time completing the 'Severn Way' was fantastic. Regards Andrew 1.
