Guests: Joe Boyd, Record Producer & Author of And the Roots of Rhythm Remain Joe Boyd is a legend in music. He was the soundman when Dylan went electric at Newport, the founder of the legendary UFO club in London, and the producer of seminal works by Nick Drake, Pink Floyd, John Martyn, Fairport Convention, R.E.M., and many more. In the 1980s, Boyd pioneered global music through his label Hannibal Records, which brought the world everything from the greatest in Cuban music to Bulgarian throat singing and Afropop. Joe's experience in the 1960s was profiled in his 2007 memoir, White Bicycles: Making Music in the 1960s. Now, Joe has created a comprehensive history of world music in his new book, And the Roots of Rhythm Remain. Boyd explores centuries of fascinating backstories to these sounds in this sweeping 900-page history, compiled from more than a decade of travel, research, interviews, and deep listening. He shows how personalities, events, and politics in places such as Havana, Lagos, Budapest, Kingston, and Rio are as colorful and momentous as anything in New Orleans, Harlem, Laurel Canyon, or Liverpool. Moreover, jazz, rhythm and blues, and rock 'n' roll would never have happened if it weren't for the notes and rhythms emanating from over the horizon. "Anything At All" Since the late '90s, the Pennsylvania-born musician Denison Witmer has been quietly producing one of the most stirring and affecting bodies of work in modern music. That body of work is also one of the most consistent. With close to fifteen albums under his belt, including Of Joy And Sorrow, Philadelphia Songs and The Ones Who Wait, Witmer's music brings to mind the work of everyone from Paul Simon to John Martyn to Elliott Smith. The Lancaster native has collaborated with everyone from The Innocence Mission to Rosie Thomas, he's toured the U.S. and Europe, did a side project called The River Bends with members of One Star Hotel, and he's been recording for Sufjan Stevens' Asthmatic Kitty label since 2011. Produced by Stevens, his new album Anything At All is his first since 2020's American Foursquare and it's a gentle stunner. From the rousing opener "Focus Ring" to the contemplative "Slow Motion Snow" Anything At All is filled with tremendous sensitivity and poetic elegance. It's a meditation on time, family, and art and rather than stress out about the sand falling through the hourglass, it chooses instead to examine each grain as it falls. It's brave, unflinching and glorious work. www.denisonwitmer.bandcamp.com (http://www.denisonwitmer.bandcamp.com) www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) Stereo Embers IG and BLUESKY: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

My irregular series on artists, albums or movies that were either denied classic status at the time or who have been forgotten from the conversation since. Here a look a 60s UK folk music genius who branched out into astonishing music in the 1970s (see also Nick Drake, John Fay, Vashti Bunyan...). A walk through his life and career through the lens of four totemic albums from that period, including the absolutely essential for anyone releases, Solid Air (10/10) and One Word (10/10).
Unlock the secrets behind John Martyn's genre-defying masterpiece "Solid Air" as we uncover how Martyn, much like Bob Dylan, reshaped the boundaries of British folk with his bold fusion of jazz, blues, and rock. Ever wondered how an album recorded in just eight days could produce such timeless tracks? We promise you'll gain fresh insights into the album's experimental brilliance and its enduring influence on later musicians. Discover why Martyn's adventurous sound continues to captivate listeners, and why tracks like "Solid Air" and "I'd Rather Be the Devil" remain fresh even today.Prepare for an intimate look at the emotional core of "Solid Air," a heartfelt dedication to Nick Drake that speaks volumes about mental health awareness. We'll explore the intriguing album cover created with the rare scleran photographic technique and draw unexpected parallels to modern bands like The Strokes with their surprising British flair. As we navigate to the album's second half, admire with us the craftsmanship and musicianship that shine through every note, ensuring this 1973 classic remains a fixture in music history. Whether you're a long-time fan or a newcomer, this episode promises to enhance your appreciation of Martyn's groundbreaking work.Listen to the album on SpotifyListen to the album on Apple MusicWhat did you think of this album? Chasing Tone - Guitar Podcast About Gear, Effects, Amps and Tone
Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for Episode 535 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - Nothing but a good time, how pedals work, and a skateboarding legend Richard has been breadboarding pedals with some success and he is keen to talk to the guys about his attempts at building a modified LPB1 booster pedal. Blake struggles to stay awake. Brian talks us through his modification and talks a little bit about this classic boost circuit and this turns into a little bit of a primer for guitar effects in general. Blake has been roleplaying and it takes the guys buy surprise so they go off on a tangent into the world of robots before Brian tells us of his gaming tactics. Richard insults him before they discuss a documentary about 1980s hair metal that involves ridiculous meat based antics. He also met one of his heroes and saw some live music which wasn't related to Pink Floyd and asks the question - who is the greatest Female Telecaster player of all time? SNL made a sketch about Oasis and it did not go down well. Meanwhile the guys have been lusting over the Greg Koch "Koch Ness Monster" pedalboard and Brian finds inspiration from Robert Keeley. This flows smoothly into a conversation about compressor pedals, feed-forward designs, and the EGO 76. Meanwhile Richard has been blown away by an early pioneer of delay effects. Flossie the sheep, WASP, Tracii Guns, The Picturebooks, The Pretenders, John Martyn, Cher...it's all in this week's Chasing Tone!We are on Patreon now too!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/chasingtonepodcast)Awesome Course, Merch and DIY mods:https://www.guitarpedalcourse.com/https://www.wamplerdiy.com/Find us at:https://www.wamplerpedals.com/https://www.instagram.com/WamplerPedals/https://www.facebook.com/groups/wamplerfanpage/Youtube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdVrg4Wl3vjIxonABn6RfWwContact us at: podcast@wamplerpedals.comSupport the show

“There was no Command-Zed back then!” John Wood engineered or produced some of the most magical, timeless and affecting records ever made - by Nick Drake, John Martyn, the McGarrigles, Fairport Convention, Sandy Denny, John Cale, Squeeze and many more. He's 85 now and looks back here at a luminous career that started with mastering singles at Decca and transferred to Sound Techniques, the mecca he co-founded in an old cowshed in Chelsea when takes were spontaneous and even the tape-op was part of the performance. He misses those days, when albums were organic and the labels had less control, and talks here about … … “the age when sound had perspective and seemed three-dimensional”. … Nick Drake's confidence and his guiding lights - eg the Beach Boys and Randy Newman (“who I'd never heard of”). And his final nighttime sessions. … the way Fairport recorded – “We're only going to do it once” – and why they could make three albums a year. …managing the girls in the Incredible String Band, “especially when Licorice played drums”. … John Cale in “maniac mode” and his sudden and unexpected friendship with Nick Drake. … Cale and Nico at the Chelsea Hotel. … and why ‘Geoff Muldaur Is Having A Wonderful Time' was the job he remembers the fondest. Also mentioned: the Downliners Sect, Judy Collins, The Marmalade, Graham Gouldman and Squeeze. John's got nothing to plug and just wanted to talk to us. A (relatively) in-depth analysis of British guitarist and singer-songwriter John Martyn in just under twenty minutes.Over a 40-year career, he released 23 albums, and was revered by his peers. The Times described him as "an electrifying guitarist and singer whose music blurred the boundaries between folk, jazz, rock and blues".Before his late-career decline, Martyn was one of the most innovative figures in the British folk-rock genre and a significant influence on the freak folk movement of the 1990s.In this episode I am in conversation with Dr. Andrew Webber.I hope you enjoy the podcast and do leave feedback if you like what you have heard.Mathew Woodall
“Bless the Weather” by Iain David McGeachy, OBE (1948-2009)— known to the public as John Martyn, is an emblem of the unfathomable mysteries of the universe: How could music so divinely comforting have emanated from one so troubled? Of course, treading the path of this maestro's biography we find the familiar signposts of drug addiction, marital abuse, alcoholism, and psychic distress. And yet. this spiritual offering translates as only gentleness and pure peace. 'Tis a puzzlement.Well, humans are complex, or as he himself wrote: “some people are crazy.” In 1980, after Martyn's break up with wife and partner Beverly, this “father of TripHop” created “Grace and Danger”, which his friend and label owner, Chris Blackwell refused to release for a year because he felt it was “too disturbing”. So, I guess it wasn't all hearts and flowers. And yet, even there, the folk-jazz improvisations, abetted by the agile bass fingerings of Danny Thompson, lull, even as they hint at a provocation. Be that as it may, on this cut the soothing, vibrational waves of guitar and voice align my brain waves in such a way that I can feel my heart rate immediately relax. It is a meditation; a connection to the eternal one-ness.
On this episode of Songs of Our Lives, it's Nick Zanca! His new album, “Hindsight,” feels like Nick in record form in a lot of ways. It's clearly a record he's wanted to make all of his life. Celebrating the new CD by Deanna Knight, paying tribute once again to the late Ron Kavana, previewing next week's shows with Cassie & Maggie and Stephen Fearing, and assembling some amazing new music from all over. In the words of the John Martyn song, "May you never lay your head down without a hand to hold", this was a show full of music for holding hands, and sharing memories and wonder.
We had the pleasure of interviewing John Smith over Zoom video!Though he was dubbed the future of folk music by Pentangle's John Renbourn, singer-songwriter John Smith's unique synthesis of styles puts him halfway across the Atlantic. He once made an album driving round the Deep South, recording out of the boot of his car; but his new record The Living Kindis the real masterpiece in American atmospherics – a true musician's record, produced by Joe Henry, the man responsible for some of the subtlest Americana of recent times. At the start of 2022 they cooked up the idea for an intimate record together – “an acoustic album that sounded like Spirit of Eden”, Smith explains, referencing Talk Talk's 1988 classic. Along with John Martyn's Solid Air and Joni Mitchell's electro-acoustic odyssey Hejira, it was one of the three creative inspirations for The Living Kind.Like Hejira, the new album is a cohesive song-cycle that seems to be cast in one rich tone-colour, one powerful mood. At the start of the Covid pandemic, Smith's family suffered a cluster of personal crises in the space of three months. His mother began radiotherapy for breast cancer, his father was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and his wife lost a pregnancy which also endangered her life. The couple, who have a young daughter, sold their house in Sussex and relocated his parents from Spain to a new home, for treatment. After that, as he sings in his first single The World Turns, Smith had to “find a new way to feel”.Most of the songs were written in the space of just two months over Christmas last year: The Living Kind is an album made after, not in the midst, of a period of personal turmoil. It gets you right in the chest – the opener,Candle, captures the overwhelming strain of his father's diagnosis – but in its self-possession and curious positivity it feels like the culmination of many personal evolutions. The Living Kind owes much of its precision and confidence to its unique recording circumstances: it was cut over just four days in February 2023, in Joe Henry's remote home in Harpswell, Maine. With temperatures dropping to -25 outside, the band – a tight trio consisting of Henry's son Levon and bassist Ross Gallagher – didn't leave the house at all. You can hear the closeness, darkness and warmth in the new songs – the hunkeredness, the cocoon. It was the first live recording made in Joe's new “music room”, a space above the garage, and cutting a record there was a leap of faith as it was completely un-soundproofed: “if a truck came by, you'd have to stop recording”.But Henry's organic and spontaneous way of working has revolutionized Smith's own. Writing on his 1963 Martin and a new Mulecaster steel guitar, Smith tends to be led where his instrument takes him. He's always played acoustic guitars with pickups inside, and enhances the rich, three-dimensional sounds with an EBow: a vibrating magnet held above a guitar string, which produces a theremin-like wail. The Living Kind is an album from someone lucky enough to have the gift of music to help put life's greatest challenges into some kind of perspective: “I do feel without my guitar and without song-writing I would have lost my mind, many times” Smith says. Henry detected something new in his singing, a lack of self-consciousness, closer to live performance than he had ever heard him in the studio. We want to hear from you! Graeme Thomson in conversation with David Eastaugh https://omnibuspress.com/products/small-hours-the-long-night-of-john-martyn Small Hours is an intimate, unflinching biography of one of the great maverick artists. Though Martyn never had a hit single, his extraordinary voice, innovative guitar playing and profoundly soulful songs secured his status as a much admired pioneer. Covered by Eric Clapton, revered by Lee Scratch Perry, produced by Phil Collins, Martyn influenced several generations of musicians, but beneath the songs lay a complicated and volatile personality. He lived his life the same way he made music: improvising as he went; scattering brilliance, beauty, rage and destruction in his wake. Drawing on almost 100 new interviews, Small Hours is a raw and utterly gripping account of sixty years of daredevil creativity, soaring highs and sometimes unconscionable lows.

Joe Boyd and John Wood were the producer and sound engineer behind some of the greatest folk rock albums of the 1960s and 70s. They worked with Pink Floyd on their first single Arnold Layne, with Fairport Convention on Unhalfbricking and Liege and Lief and with Nick Drake on Five Leaves Left, Bryter Later and Pink Moon. John produced John Martyn's Bless The Weather and Solid Air while Joe worked with the Incredible String Band. In this conversation with Matthew Bannister on stage at the Indoor Festival of Folk, they tell the extraordinary stories behind the creation of these classic albums. --- We rely on support from our listeners to keep this show on the road. Lisa Manning and Tony Laudico met in Tokyo, Japan where they were both working at the time. It was a serendipitous encounter of a Canadian and an American, and the beginning of their version of a modern fairy tale romance. They lived happily for 27 years in many countries around the globe and made thousands of memories with their extended families, friends and two wonderful sons. But unlike many fairy tales that end when a couple dies on the same day after a long life together, Tony and Lisa's fairy tale had a different ending. Lisa Manning Laudico died on August 6th 2022 after five years of living with metastatic breast cancer. She died quickly and unexpectedly within one week. Tony was suddenly faced - as it turns out totally unprepared - with the stunning reality of becoming a widower and the future without the love of his life, his partner and best friend. A year later, soon after the one year anniversary of Lisa's passing, Tony got in touch with our Executive Producer Victoria Goldberg and suggested that they meet and talk about Lisa's last days and how he was able to survive these past 12 months without her. It is remarkable and at times a heart wrenching account of Tony's struggle to comprehend a life without the partnership that had sustained and defined him for 30 years, his whole adult life.He will talk about the anguish of loss, a nightmare of "death-duties", the true meaning of grief, and the solace of friendship.Although not always easy listening, it is an uplifting testament to the power of love.*Special thanks to John Martyn for the use of his song 'Small Hours' - One World (1977)
Since his passing in 2009, the music of the UK folk & experimental artist has come to be appreciated even more widely.
This month we're back half a century to discuss our favourite songs of 1973 with lashings of glam, folk, prog, funk, protopunk, metal, Boogie (but no woogie) and a lot more country than some of us were hoping for. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year. Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - Allman Brothers Band, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Black Sabbath, David Bowie, Tim Buckley, John Cale, Can, Johnny Cash & June Carter Cash, Betty Davis, Golden Earring, The Isley Brothers, Dr John, Kool & The Gang, Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, John Martyn, New York Dolls, Mike Oldfield, Gram Parsons, Pink Floyd, Lou Reed, Roxy Music, Doug Sahm, Stephen Stills, Iggy & The Stooges, Владимир Высоцкий, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Tom Waits, The Who, & ZZ Top.Find all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6wpvYSJ6KVwRqJWFrtnwLk?si=6d7777dc93dc450cFind our We Dig Music Pollwinners Party playlist (featuring all of the winning songs up until now) here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/45zfDHo8zm6VqrvoEQSt3z?si=Ivt0oMj6SmitimvumYfFrQIf you want to listen to megalength playlists of all the songs we've individually picked since we started doing best of the year episodes, you can listen to Colin's here – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5x3Vy5Jry2IxG9JNOtabRT?si=HhcVKRCtRhWCK1KucyrDdg Ian's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2H0hnxe6WX50QNQdlfRH5T?si=XmEjnRqISNqDwi30p1uLqA and Tracey's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2p3K0n8dKhjHb2nKBSYnKi?si=7a-cyDvSSuugdV1m5md9Nw The playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Lydia ClarkeRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Say hello at www.facebook.com/wedigmusicpcast or tweet us at http://twitter.com/wedigmusicpcast or look at shiny pictures on Instagram at http://instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast Part of the We Made This podcast network. https://twitter.com/wmt_network You can also find all the We Dig Music & Free With This Months Issue episodes at www.wedigpodcasts.com

Held By Trees Brings Together Talk Talk Alumni#heldbytrees #talktalk #davidjoseph #robbiemcintosh #newmusic #solace #live Hot on the heels of their critically acclaimed debut album, “Solace”, instrumental project Held By Trees is excited to be releasing two new EPs this year on Sound Canyon Records through InnerSleeve.com recorded at Peter Gabriel's famous Real World Studios, the first EP is comprised of live versions of five tracks from “Solace”. The six-piece live iteration of Held By Trees brings together three of the Talk Talk/Mark Hollis alumni that contributed to “Solace” including renowned guitarist Robbie McIntosh. The band recorded playing all together in the ‘Big Room' at Real World in November 2022, a week after their debut live performances. The second EP is an entirely new suite of pieces themed on the transition from daylight to darkness. Entitled “Eventide”, it was tracked live at Real World Studios and then additional layers were added by musicians in America and Canada, by old friends of project leader David Joseph. The twin EPs will be released on separate CDs and as two sides of one vinyl pressing by new American record label, Sound Canyon and their retail arm http://InnerSleeve.comThe new material sees Held By Trees continue to create instrumental music characterized by skilled improvisation over spacious, epic arrangements. The music draws on the influence of Van Morrison and John Martyn, alongside their usual late Talk Talk and Pink Floyd references. The live versions of “Solace” tracks bring a fresh intensity to the music, with a heavier vibe created by the band in real time.Purchase: https://www.innersleeve.com/en-gb/collections/held-by-treesWebsite: https://heldbytrees.co.uk Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/heldbytrees/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/heldbytreesfbTwitter: https://twitter.com/heldbytreesBandcamp: https://heldbytrees.bandcamp.com/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/c/HeldByTreesRobbie McIntosh: https://robbiemcintosh.co.uk/Bandcamp: https://robbiemcintosh.bandcamp.com/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/robbie.mcintosh.16Twitter: https://twitter.com/mcintosh_robbieYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKwerb5-C2fGlruK-gYAtUAThanks for tuning in, please be sure to click that subscribe button and give this a thumbs up!!Email: thevibesbroadcast@gmail.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/listen_to_the_vibes_/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thevibesbroadcastnetworkLinktree: https://linktr.ee/the_vibes_broadcastTikTok: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMeuTVRv2/Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheVibesBrdcstTruth: https://truthsocial.com/@KoyoteFor all our social media and other links, go to: Linktree: https://linktr.ee/the_vibes_broadcastPlease subscribe, like, and share!
