Your daughter's transformation into a young woman is designed by God. But as a dad, stepping back to protect her can be tough when all you want is to reconnect like you did when she was younger. In this episode, Jay Heck, Rob Porter, and Jeff Zaugg unpack the powerful "Chrysalis Analogy" and reveal how God uses this transition to draw you closer to Him while strengthening your relationship with your kids. Key Takeaway Being a supportive protector instead of forcing connection as your daughter ages will build intimacy and make both of your lives easier. Your daughter's view of men will be shaped by how safe and loved she feels with you as her father. Just like a butterfly emerging from a chrysalis, your daughter's spiritual, physical, and hormonal transformation requires you to stand back and trust God's design. Your thoughts and words hold immense power. Choose to speak vision and blessings over your daughter's life. Jay Heck & Rob Porter Jay Heck is the founder and director of Being Songs, a ministry helping men discover that authentic, fearless, God-designed manhood begins by being a son. He and his wife, Heather, have two young adult children. Rob Porter lives in New Zealand with his wife and two kids. He leads Let's Keep Rising, a ministry that crafts adventures, events, and resources that meet men where they are and help them experience restoration in the most critical relationships they have, beginning with God Key Quotes 21:15 - "I recall you mentioning, Jay, I get to become more of a son through my daughter. So the thing that sticks out to me is, what are the messages my daughter is receiving from me? Jay, I think you laid out this idea of air, food and water. Attention being the air, affection being the food, and affirmation being the water. And what I'm really feeling, where I'm maturing, is my awareness in a given situation. So, that when I'm feeling stressed or frustrated or whatever my emotions are stirring, that I'm able to separate that from coming out to my child. That I'm able to be aware of what's the message that they're receiving from me." 24:51 - "One of the things that I was guilty of, and this was my heart's response or reaction to fear, that I don't know what I'm doing. So, when I can't make sense of it, I like to put a label on it. My daughter is difficult, or she's hard-headed. I mean, people joke about this stuff all the time, but when you really begin to think about it, you are speaking and you are affirming a reality. You're speaking something into existence. Like if I, in my anger, I can say, my daughter's being so difficult today. And the next day I say the same thing. And then after three days, I'm like, my daughter is difficult. Like it grows, the story begins to be more comprehensive. I don't know what to do with my daughter. Wow, is that really the story or is it you just don't know what to do in this instant with her? You don't know how to love her. And so we can just say these curses all the time." By his 20s he was working as a sound designer for Akai, Roland Emu/Ensoniq, eventually signing on exclusively with the latter. Later, due to a growing demand for software instruments and libraries, Eddie started to develop libraries for various software manufacturers, including Native Instruments, Kiesel, Sound Effects Library, Arturia and Propellerheads. A meeting with Phil Allen, a Capital Radio DJ, resulted in the company Samplecraze, which Eddie has spent 20 years developing as an educational resource. At this time he trained in music production and soon gained a number of prominent contracts working with some notable artistes such as Busta Rhymes, Greensleeves, 9 Bar, SFP, Sleeveless, Chris Campbell and Gam Productions. He contracted to Island Records and Chrysalis as a producer and remixer, plus was commissioned to write the score for Macbeth that ran at 2 Way Mirror at Alexander Palace for the Cambridge Shakespeare Company. His ongoing development of Samplecraze has led to him offering educational workshops and classes, releasing four books via PC Publishing and becoming a contributor and forum moderator for Sound On Sound. Watch the Screenplay Reading: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONlg9ToDKoY “Chrysalis” navigates the story of Deniz, an enigmatic alien who, upon arriving on Earth, assumes the form of a 20-something girl. Driven by loneliness and curiosity, she becomes captivated by the vibrant Turkish culture. Alternating between the euphoria of her love with a Turkish woman, Melisa, and the aftermath of a tragic loss caused by homophobia in modern Turkish society, the narrative weaves subtle hints alluding to Deniz's true nature, inviting contemplation on whether she is an extraterrestrial or a representation of someone who feels like an outsider within their own country. The story delicately portrays the healing journey of both Deniz and Melisa's grieving mother within a city so capable of profound love, yet at times challenged to extend that love to others. Get to know the writer: What is your screenplay about? The screenplay explores what it means to love in a city like Istanbul- a place that is both beautiful and complicated. Growing up in this country (as with any country), you can find love in every corner within its people. However, there's also a heartbreaking cycle of hate that seeps through, especially towards the LGBTQ community. Istanbul is naturally a loving city, but the struggle to embrace all forms of love has persisted for years. This paradox inspired me to create a story that highlights the loneliness and complexity of being part of a community like this in Istanbul. Despite the hate, I believe the city is and will always be filled with love- sometimes, all it takes is a shift in perspective to see that love in its purest form is universal. My love is no different than your love. Subscribe to the podcast: https://twitter.com/wildsoundpod https://www.instagram.com/wildsoundpod/ https://www.facebook.com/wildsoundpod
In this episode, I continue the "Your Voice. Your Health" series with a powerful conversation about step therapy, healthcare disparities, and patient advocacy. I had the privilege of speaking with Jamil Rivers, a metastatic breast cancer thriver, nationally recognized advocate, and founder of The Chrysalis Initiative. We discuss Jamil's experience from her breast cancer diagnosis to her groundbreaking work in educating healthcare providers through her Cancer Curriculum, which is transforming cancer care and addressing inequities in treatment access. We explore the flaws in the healthcare system that step therapy exposes, and discuss trustworthy resources and tactics that can empower patients to advocate for themselves and seek the care they deserve. Listen now to be inspired by Jamil's story and gain important insights into improving cancer care for all. Special thanks to Amgen for making this episode possible.
Lots of panic questions about Monarchs this year: in Auckland they are recorded as “pretty rare”, whereas in Christchurch I see them quite regularly and they're doing fine in my garden. There are always some troubles with wasps. These predators are quite keen to chew the monarch caterpillars to pieces and take the protein back to the wasp nest as food for their larvae. It sounds awful and it looks awful; the common-German wasps (and Paper wasps) are, after all, imported pests that don't belong here. Keep your plants with caterpillars under netting; the wasps can not access them. Another trick is to grow your swan plants in large pots, which can be moved to new sites when wasps discover the precious cargo; the wasp's GPS system is disrupted when you change the position of the swan plants. Running out of food is often bad news – caterpillars starving Always keep an extra plant or two under curtain netting, so female monarchs can't lay eggs on those spare food plants!! It also pays to reduce the number of eggs/caterpillars per plant (birth-control) I must confess: I had some trouble managing the number of caterpillars this year: they we sometimes eating the tops of the naked swanplants… and in pairs!! I tend to keep my caterpillars inside the tunnel house, so that the female monarchs couldn't get at them to lay more and more eggs “Go Fly to Auckland and Do something with your Life” is what I usually say… Sometimes caterpillars are found limp and dying This is often caused by predation by brown soldier bugs (Cermatulus nasalis) who stick their sucking tubes into the caterpillars and slowly such them dry. Look for the soldier bugs (brown version of the garden stink bug!!) and get rid of them! Accidents do happen, especially when the last instar caterpillar does its very last change from Caterpillar to Chrysalis. That in itself is a tricky manoeuvre: the caterpillar hangs from a small patch of silk while it takes its skin of. The trick is then to hook its chrysalis “claws” into the same white silken pad, so it can hang there as long as it takes to change into an adult butterfly. There are a few videos that capture the way a caterpillar becomes a chrysalis; have a look at how the caterpillar manages that without falling. But sometimes things go horribly wrong and if you discover a fallen chrysalis soon after the accident happened, you can carefully pick that very fragile creature up and literally hang it back where it needs to be… Very delicate “First Aid”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In the first edition of a special 3-part podcast series, CancerNetwork® spoke with Daniel Morgensztern, MD; Mary Ellen Flanagan, NP; and Janelle Mann, PharmD, BCOP, about best practices for implementing recently approved bispecific antibodies into cancer care. Their initial discussion focused on the clinical trial results, administration protocols, and toxicity management strategies related to the use of amivantamab-vmjw (Rybrevant) for patients with EGFR-mutated non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Morgensztern is a professor of Medicine and clinical director of Thoracic Oncology in the Division of Oncology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Flanagan is a nurse practitioner in the Division of Thoracic Oncology at Washington University in St. Louis. Mann is a clinical oncology pharmacist at Siteman Cancer Center of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and manager of Clinical Pharmacy Services at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Morgensztern began by giving an overview of amivantamab's mechanism of action and highlighting supporting data for the agent when administered alone or in combination with other agents. The FDA initially approved amivantamab monotherapy for patients with EGFR exon 20 insertion–mutant NSCLC in May 2021 based on data from the phase 1 CHRYSALIS trial (NCT02609776). Furthermore, the agency approved amivantamab/chemotherapy as frontline treatment for patients with NSCLC harboring EGFR exon 20 insertion mutations in March 2024 based on data from the phase 3 PAPILLON trial (NCT04538664). Findings from the phase 3 MARIPOSA trial (NCT04487080) also supported the FDA approval of amivantamab plus lazertinib (Lazcluze) for those with EGFR-mutant NSCLC in August 2024. Additionally, Mann reviewed key dosing considerations as patients receive amivantamab via intravenous infusion. She detailed the use of premedication such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl) to supplement amivantamab while monitoring for toxicities during the initial infusion period, which may necessitate additional dosing adjustments. Flanagan added to the conversation surrounding infusion-related reactions by describing strategies for mitigating the risk of venous thromboembolism, cutaneous toxicities, and other adverse effects. I'm thankful for tears. As I grow older, I find that the poignant times that often precede emotional moments are actually a mix of joy and sorrow. I have also noticed tears arise in moments of intense gratitude - times when I am thankful for unexpected blessings that seem beyond what I deserve or could imagine. 2022 was definitely a year of more crying than normal. The most outstanding of these experiences was over Labor Day and involved 3 straight days of tears. My son, Isaac, attended a spiritual retreat called Chrysalis over Labor Day weekend. About 15 years prior, I volunteered at the same 3-night ecumenical experience. The site is still at the same Brown Country deeply forested remote location. Taking Isaac to the retreat was one of those drives that helped me recall many memories that are hard to access unless I'm back in the same space. They were very good memories of helping others experience the meaning of sacrifice, love, and reconciliation.Doing a deep dive into an intensive weekend of self reflection and self discovery with mostly strangers is not necessarily a teenager's idea of a fun weekend. Like many teenagers, my son had a fair share of ups and downs throughout his childhood. Most notably, he endured the divorce of his mother and me - something that undoubtedly had a spiritual impact on him beyond my comprehension. Spiritual retreats tend to surface a lot of mixed emotions and is often the reason - whether conscious or unconscious - why people decide to not take the risk. Isaac was reluctant to commit to the long weekend, so I shared my personal experience of Chrysalis with him. We talked about the speakers over the weekend who would be sharing intimate spiritual experiences. We talked about the delicate discernment required to appreciate others' spirituality while also questioning some of the divergent religious beliefs that may be held by those speakers. We talked about honoring the many ways that people are moved spiritually and to not judge others' expressions of faith. I emphasized my spiritual belief that Christianity is, at its core, the cultivation and sharing of “agape” love - a concept that the weekend would help bring into sharp focus for him. What is agape love? I think of it as acts of appreciation, encouragement, and service that are done without expectation of reciprocation. In daily life, it is easy to get caught in a cycle of transactional behavior. There is nothing wrong with this part of human culture, but to settle on transactions as being the basis for cultural meaning misses out on both giving and receiving in a way more aligned with agape love. This is different from romantic love. It is not intuitive or easy to learn unless intentionally taught and experienced. That is a big reason why the Chrysalis weekend is so important - it is a sort of crash course on how to better love others and - almost always - understanding how to better love yourself. In 2004, when I went on a similar retreat designed for adults, I attentively listened to messages about forgiveness and reconciliation. The times of prayer and reflection over the weekend allowed these life changing concepts to transform how I approached my relationships. I realized how much pain I held by not forgiving my father for the endless fights we had when I was a teenager. I'll never forget telling my dad that I was sorry for how I had treated him in high school and college. His response reminded me of the prodigal son parable as he embraced me and gladly accepted my apology - making a point to say that he had forgiven me a long time ago. I remembered this experience and other blessings born of forgiveness as Isaac was welcomed into the retreat center. It was a drenching rain as adults gathered to pray for the teenagers we referred to as “caterpillars” on the Chrysalis retreat. How would they change over the weekend? A few tears of gratitude percolated as I prayed. The next day, I was gardening in the sunshine at one of my favorite n...

It's 2025, and Player 1 vs The World's StrangeCast is BACK for the first podcast episode of the year. We officially enter the fourth year of StrangeCast's run and we're 10 episodes away from hitting a milestone 100th episode! Of course, we'll be here to keep fans company on ALL things Deck Nine, Don't Nod, Square Enix and Life Is Strange throughout 2025. For this episode of the podcast, Adnan and Adam sit down to discuss their ONLY news topic for the show. The StrangeCast hosts chat about what Life Is Strange co-director and co-creator Michel Koch had to say about Chloe Price's hair colour and adding more information to the character's lore. Our main topic kicks off our coverage of the 10th anniversary of Don't Nod's Life Is Strange, with Episode 1: Chrysalis having been released in January 2015 (feel old? We really do!). With that said, StrangeCast has decided to put its official viewpoint forward on Episode 1: Chrysalis, Episode 2: Out of Time, Episode 3: Chaos Theory, Episode 4: Dark Room and Episode 5: Polarized, specifically for how Adnan and Adam would rank all five episodes. Timestamps: 00:00 -- Introduction 02:50 -- Michel Koch offers his two cents on Chloe Price's hair colour; Adnan and Adam discuss the additional lore added to Chloe post-Life Is Strange: Double Exposure 23:53 -- Adnan and Adam rank all five episodes from Don't Nod's Life Is Strange, ranging from 'GOAT' to 'Good' 56:20 -- Comment from the listener! The death of his mother and the pandemic ended up producing a chrysalis-like transition for Rich, the fruits of which today's listeners will witness. For musicians and producers that struggle to finish tracks, Eddie Bazil explains the benefits of creating musical snippets and gives us some examples as to how we can tap into different moods, use sound design techniques to create something unique that becomes a useable addition to our musical catalogues and create pieces that stand the test of time.“Snippets and the creating of, serve to strengthen sound ideas, hone mixing and production skills, help to understand timing and flow, act as a testbed for song structuring ideas and are the playground for testing and mastering all manner of plug-ins”.Chapters00:00 - Introduction00:19 - What Is A Snippet?01:53 - The Benefits Of Creating Snippets04:26 - Planning Your Snippets06:07 - Sound Design06:53 - Example 1: Phased Pad17:33 - Example 2: Happy, Mood-Lifting 22:01 - Example 3: Drama And Tension#SoundtoysPhaseMistress #FabFilterTimeless2 #EventideBlackhole #SteinbergGrooveagent #GforceimpOSCar3 #WavesOvoxVocoder #SteinbergHalionTrip #RobPapenAlbino #Kontakt #NIMaschine2 #AirHybrid3Eddie Bazil BiogEddie Bazil launched his music industry career at the age of 17 as a synth programmer for a range of Electro / New Wave bands including Art of Noise, Spandau Ballet, Pet Shop Boys, Bobin, Paul Dee, DJ Krush, DJ Shadow, Jets Orchestra. By his 20s he was working as a sound designer for Akai, Roland Emu/Ensoniq, eventually signing on exclusively with the latter. This is episode (9) of our special nine-part series entitled Connect The Dots. Our hosts Julie Flakstad & Dr. Taz Bhatia welcome serial entrepreneur, visionary and dedicated philanthropist Sara Blakely. As the founder of Spanx, a now billion-dollar global brand that revolutionized women's apparel and, more recently, Sneex, the world's first high-heel sneaker, Sara shares her midlife journey as a time of transformation and growth. She highlights the importance of mindset, intuition, and carving out moments for self-connection, all of which have guided her major decisions in life, including selling Spanx. She also gives valuable advice + insight on how to embrace fear and stay connected to one's "why" - especially in midlife. Here are some key themes + takeaways …Midlife as a "Chrysalis": Rather than seeing midlife as a crisis, Sara sees it as a transformative period of shedding, growth and inner reflection, where ego-driven motivations give way to purpose-driven ones driven more by spirit. The Power of Visualization: Sara shares her approach on visualization where she focuses on creating mental space for her mind to wander, daydream and allowing ideas to surface naturally.Connecting with Intuition: From an early age, Sara explains how she learned to connect with herself, embrace intuition and manifest what she wants. She talks openly about her ongoing process of becoming intentional and clear about key decisions as well as asking the universe for specific signs to guide her.Overcoming Fear: “The only way to overcome your fear, is to do it,” Sara says, explaining that continues to be committed to saying YES to challenging situations that could be embarrassing. Embarrassing situations become funny, vulnerable stories, she explains, and these experiences make us more resilient and allow us to embrace our imperfections.Struggling with Perimenopause: Sara opens up about her own vulnerable experience and confusion dealing with perimenopause including extreme hormone fluctuations, sleep struggles, massive weight fluctuations and severe emotional lows. Philanthropy and Purpose-Driven Work: Passionately dedicated to empowering women, she talks about her personal, and at times playful, approach to philanthropy, including lending out her wedding dress to women during COVID, creating a "wedding dress sisterhood."About Our Guest, Sara BlakelySara Blakely is a serial entrepreneur and the visionary founder of Spanx, a brand that revolutionized women's shapewear by turning her personal frustration with traditional hosiery into an innovative solution. Beyond her business, Blakely is committed to empowering women globally through her Sara Blakely Foundation, and became the first female billionaire to join the Giving Pledge, promising to donate at least half her wealth to charity. Today, she continues to inspire as an investor on Shark Tank, a frequent speaker, and a champion for women achieving their dreams, all while aiming to create the world's most comfortable high-heel shoe, Sneex.Connect with Our Hosts and Conversation Partner!Sara BlakelySpanx Sneex Sara Blakely FoundationSpeakingModern Elder Academy Instagram: @sarablakely Julie Flakstadhttps://julieflakstad.com/ Instagram @julieflakstadFacebook @thejulieflakstadDr. Taz BhatiaYouTube: @DrTazMDInstagram: @drtazmdWebsite: doctortaz.comOrder The Hormone Shift book HEREPractice - Centre Spring MD: https://centrespringmd.com/ Tune in next Wednesday, 11/20, when we drop our bonus episode to this special (9) part series, called “Stronger Together” with Womaness co-founders, Sally Mueller and Michelle Jacobs.
