“The U.S. team was full, and Ryan Kerrigan and I were really good buddies, and we'd always talked about maybe creating a Canada team because I'm a dual citizen. Because there wasn't a Canada team. And I knew that the International Skyrunning Federation, they wanted to keep growing. So I was like, “Hey, let's make a team. Let's make a Canada team.”Naia Tower Pierce loves Skyrunning. The sport and the competition are a big part of it, but the fact the 21-year-old is pushed physically in beautiful mountain landscapes is also a huge part of the equation. When the opportunity to start a youth Team Canada arose, she jumped at it, excited at the notion of growing the sport in one of the two dual-citizens home nations. She coached and competed for the first year and by year two was strictly coaching. It's a role she has embraced, all because of her love of the sport and wanting more people to experience it.“When I was 15, all of a sudden I met all these other people who just loved dying on mountains. And at the end of the day you're on the start line and no matter if you were first or last it was about the sport itself and it was you against the mountain. I think that's awesome and just beautiful.”Naia was a lot of fun to chat with and learn some more about what she's up to with Skyrunning and Team Canada. I'm sure you will enjoy the conversation as much as I did, make sure to let us know what you think! We celebrate birthday No. 53 (May 24, 2023) for former Purdue defensive lineman extraordinaire Jeff Zgonina. A star for the Boilermakers from 1989-92, Zgonina was named Big Ten defensive player of the year as a senior in '92, making him one of only two Boilermakers to win the award. Coincidentally, the other to win the award is Ryan Kerrigan (2010), who now is on the Washington Commanders' defensive coaching staff along with Zgonina. The Chicago area native who enjoyed 17 years in the NFL including a Super Bowl title with the Rams and has worked in the league as a player and coach for 25 of the past 33 years, talks about how he got to Purdue, what it is like to work with Kerrigan and his simple philosophy towards the sport he loves.
Ryan Kerrigan was one of the early participants in the SIBC. Graduating from Notre Dame with a Finance degree in 1995, Ryan was one of McKinsey's first direct Notre Dame hires. Consulting to private equity to founding his own company, Ryan shares insights on career options, grad school and the importance of doing what you like. He and his wife founded Kerrigan Advisors, a leading sell-side advisor to auto dealers. Growing up in the Midwest, Ryan's natural risk aversion has morphed into a belief that we need to worry less and do more. A thought-provoking conversation with a fantastic person.
Former 1st round NFL draft pick of the Washington Commanders, Ryan Kerrigan, joined the show this week. We talked about Ryan's incredible football career in college and in the NFL, but then moved on to the more important detail on who Ryan is off the field and in his new venture with coaching. Big shoutout to Ryan, and Savannah at Athlete's First for setting this one up! There's also audio from Ron Rivera on Chase Young's recovery timeline and Ryan Kerrigan explaining why he's retiring now.
JP Finlay, Mitch Tischler and Pete Hailey have a lot to get to (and a lot of people to talk to) on this Saturday edition of Washington Football Talk. First, JP, Mitch and Pete recap the action at practice, which included lots of Cole Turner highlights as well as some great work by a depth corner. Then, they welcome in Chris Kerwin and Darryl Johnson, two photographers who intersected with Kerrigan plenty during his time in Washington. After those five finish, you'll hear JP's one-on-one with Kerrigan, who reflects on his career and why he chose to retire at this point. And lastly, JP also sits down with Kendall Fuller, who explains his comfort in the secondary and his "old soul" off-day plans. If you like podcasts where JP randomly shreds his own sock and Pete horribly misunderstands what JP is doing on Saturday evening, then this is the episode for you.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
JP Finlay, Mitch Tischler and Pete Hailey are ready to run through another newsy day in Ashburn, beginning with the news that Chase Young will miss Week 1 and that Ryan Kerrigan is retiring after 11 years in the league. After covering both of those pass-rusher related stories, the guys dive into what took place on the field Friday, where the offense bounced back (mostly), Montez Sweat is turning heads and Curtis Samuel was "slowed down." Then, to close, you'll hear Pete's interview with Jonathan Allen, where the captain explains why he hates the word potential so much. If you like podcasts where Mitch tosses out a crazy Trai Turner theory and Mitch's rogue eyebrow distracts JP, then this is the episode for you.
