Inspired by Adam's recent adventures in Santiago de Comepstela, Spain, where he talked about satire at the second Conference on Feminisms and Humour: Humour-Sofías, and a new BBC Report which determined that comedy is a premium British export, Jo and Adam investigate the reception of British comedy abroad. They take a look at an enormous project undertaken by King's College London to survey screen encounters with Britain abroad, before considering the tricky question of whether comedy can be successfully adapted across international borders (with specific reference to The Inbetweeners and The American Office). In the second half, Jo and Adam respond to a listener question about comic songs and satire in music, which takes them on a wide ranging musical journey that touches on Half Man Half Biscuit, The Beautiful South, Eminem, The Lancashire Hotpots and much more else besides.

- Rhythm is a dancer 2 Unlimited - No limit The Beautiful South - Rotterdam Suede - Europe is our playground AC/DC - Bedlam in Belgium R.E.M. - Radio Free Europe Ella Fitzgerald - I love Paris David Bowie - Where are we now? August 1989.The final year of ‘the finest pop decade ever'™️ is moving along quite nicely thank you very much. There's most definitely a change in the air, and we don't mean the launch of the FOUR channel Sky TV network. Relax everyone, UK Gold and TOTP reruns are coming in three years! No, real change was coming. The second summer of love in 1988 (sorry Danny Wilson, probably a year out) as witnessed on the utterly imperial NOW 11, 12 and 13 had demonstrated that the 90s were calling and they would be decked out in dayglo. And most importantly a new positivity was being felt in the air, across the airwaves and through the pop we were all immersed in.And let's not beat about the bush, folks, 1989 was a seismic year for music. Let me indulge you listeners:Disintegration, Three Feet High and Rising, Doolittle, Technique, Club Classics Volume One, Raw Like Sushi, The Stone Roses, , Like A Prayer, Hats, The Seeds of Love, Flowers In The Dirt, Paul's Boutique, The Raw And The Cooked…And of course Neither Fish Nor Flesh (A Soundtrack of Love, Faith, Hope & Destruction). And so, to our favourite compiler of variously compiled pop. 1989 saw four (yes, as many as that!) new NOW, That's What I Call Music albums. Why four, I hear you cry? Well, because the summer was adorned with the first new dance volume since 1986, an album that, NOW fans will know, featured Love Can't Turn Around by Farley Jackmaster Funk - the first House track to break the UK. And 1989 was time (not for the guru, that's 1990 of course) to celebrate how dance was back, Back, BACK!And this additionally delicious dance volume enabled the BIG summer fifteenth volume to go deeper into the year's genres. So step forward delights including Soul II Soul's era defining classic, Paul McCartney's Hofner bass-adorned celebration of TV dinners, Swing Out Sister's mind-bending, sumptuous sixties throwback and De La Soul's daisy-age makeover of Hall and Oates (the ultimate backward nod to the outgoing 80s?).What a time to be on the edge of seventeen (deliberate Stevie Nicks nod, there) as this listener was!And joining me for this sepia-tinged and frankly tear-stained 1989 nostalgia fest through NOW 15 is the music journalist and author of the 33 1/3 book on George Michael's Faith, Matthew Horton.Discover how homemade mixtapes (his mums AND his own) inspired many a house party and achieved (almost) legendary status. Which cassettes were stuck in his Walkman at the outdoor Lido pool, why goth stars and American soap operas need to come together, which rapper performed for Matthew (and others, obviously) at Bristol University and (YES!) why the love for Fish and Flesh will never go away. And amongst these glittering 1989 delights, experience the moments when I actually say positive things (almost) about our friends from the north The Beautiful South and Hue and Cry.Join us on the glorious beach (best cover ever™️ - Jude Rogers) as we head back to NOW15. I think it's going to be alright. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In the dynamic world of music, a few trailblazers stand out, reshaping the industry with their audacious ideas and unshakeable passion. Andy Macdonald - the maverick behind the Go Discs and Independiente record labels - is undeniably one such luminary. With a knack for spotting raw talent and an unwavering commitment to artistic authenticity, Andy is one of the most successful UK independent music entrepreneurs of the modern era.In this World Exclusive Podcast conversation, we discover how his early interactions with the music industry at Stiff Records exposed him to the inner workings of record labels and the art of artist development. We learn how his journey in the business was kick-started through a strong passion for discovering and nurturing talent and a conversation that lit the fuse...And for the first time, Andy shares his experiences with Paul Weller. From signing him to Go Discs in 1992 and the release of their first single together "Uh Huh Oh Yeh!".This was the song that open up my world to Weller and what a journey it was in the 90s!.That debut solo album (via a Japanese record label) to Wild Wood and then the huge success of Stanley Road. We'll hear how they continued to work together through Heavy Soul and Heliocentric, despite the Polygram takeover of the label, and then onto a new venture - Independiente with the album's Days of Speed and Illumination.Founded in 1983, Go Discs quickly established itself as a breeding ground for innovative and groundbreaking artists. Andy's vision was simple yet profound: to provide a platform for artists to express their creativity without compromising their artistic integrity. This ethos resonated deeply with musicians and listeners alike, setting Go Discs Records apart from its contemporaries.Key signings included Billy Bragg, The Housemartins, The LAs, Madness, Beautiful South and of course, Paul Weller. Born from humble beginnings, fast becoming a band to watch. They have been on thebuzzr playlist since my first listen. Tracks played tonight: “The Beautiful” Influences for the song: The lyrics tell a semi-autobiographical story of lead singer Gem's ongoing battle with depression. Lyrical inspiration came from a line in Emily Dickinson's poem As Imperceptibly as Grief. A passage in the poem reads “Our summer made her light escape into the beautiful”. Thank you for tuning in. Enjoy the show! 10 P.M. EST at https://www.thebuzzrpod.com Cheers! Shay Band Bio The Banquets are an alt- rock/pop trio from Leeds with talent in their souls and ambition in their hearts. They had an explosive arrival to the music scene in 2019 and 2020, making an appearance at the Great British Folk Festival, and supporting the likes of The South (formerly The Beautiful South) and legendary icon Toyah Wilcox. The Banquets' music is a simple mix of rock, blues, and pop music, whilst maintaining the great tradition of British rock. The musical influences of the band stretch far and wide, and go right back to the early 20th century blues scene. Band Bio The Banquets are an alt- rock/pop trio from Leeds with talent in their souls and ambition in their hearts. Their sound is hugely impacted by the music that has flowed out of America over the last century, and like most British music, it reflects back that sound and rubs in some northern British magic.
