This week, I present an excerpt from a live presentation from the What to Consider Next Nonclinical Careers Virtual Conference in July. This live, interactive conference is being presented by Michelle Mudge-Riley and Physicians Helping Physicians. She has recruited many well-known experts in physician career transition to speak and mentor at the conference. And although it is a virtual online conference, it is not prerecorded. The presentations will be done live, and there are several opportunities to network with the faculty and other attendees. And there are additional expert mentors and coaches joining the networking sessions. Michelle was kind enough to invite me to talk about what I've learned from my podcast guests over the past three years. And in today's podcast episode, I share part of the content of that presentation. SHOW NOTES: This week next level entrepreneur and Dr. Michelle Mudge-Riley and I took the conversation to another level as we had a special conversation about physicians helping physicians and she reveals what she is doing to help physicians who are interested in non-clinical careers this summer in July! Highlights from the conversation: Dr. Mudge’s Background ● Dr. Mudge was in pathology training as a pathology before transitioning in 2004 She loved medicine, but wasn’t sure clinical medicine was what she felt comfortable with. Back in those days, resources that now are available all over the internet weren’t there. That made her feel alone and lost. ● She then tried other jobs somehow related to medicine - which was the only work experience she had - and worked for a medical device company and hospital administration. Without marketing or administration knowledge, the outcomes weren’t exactly good. ● She started telling her story, and it got picked up by different news channels. Later, she was invited to speak in conferences about her experience. Not long after that, her clients started reaching out to her for coaching services. A Message For the Doctors that Feel Like they Outgrew Their Careers It’s a bit scary, because you may feel like you are turning your back into what you worked so hard for. You are not a failure, you are exploring other options. It’s valid to think about businesses that you’d like to start, careers that you’d like to explore. Spread your wings, because good things come with that. The Situation of Doctors Trying to Change Their Career Path ● No one is safe form how lost they will feel once they make the transition. Triple board certified orthopedics, surgeons, etc… ● Currently, there is what seems to be a mass exodus. Doctors are looking towards changing their career, and this doesn’t necessarily mean coming out of clinical, but just practicing on their own terms. ● What stops most of the people is fear. “What’s out there? Is there anything for me?” ● There are many different paths that people can take: Telemedicine, utilization review work, healthcare IT, pharma medical science liaison work, digital technology related or unrelated to medicine… How To Help Doctors During the Transition ● Preparing their minds for the journey: Most of physicians look only at the destination. Becoming a doctor was a journey, and most forget that. The transition will be journey too. ● It’s best to leave the competitive mindset behind: Striving to be as good as it gets is wonderful, but there’s no need to push others down. There’s enough bread for everyone. ● Confidence: Many will say that a transition is stupid, a waste of time, or a waste of medical training. There’s a reason someone decided to do the transition, and that should be the one thing on their mind, and their main motivation. How to Network Effectively to Become an MSL

I’ve been fascinated by the medical science liaison career. Its an entry level position in the pharmaceutical industry that is often open to both licensed and unlicensed physicians. In today’s interview, I speak with an obstetrician who leveraged her clinical work, professional relationships, and networking to obtain her first job as an MSL. Dr. Swati Shah is a board-certified obstetrician/gynecologist. Since quitting her practice in 2009, Swati has held a variety of different clinical positions including practicing as a locum tenens physician in Hawaii, St. Croix, Maine, Kansas, a Navajo reservation and elsewhere. She also worked as a laborist (OB hospitalist) and a free-lance consultant. But she landed a position as a medical science liaison through her relationship with an MSL who called on her as a physician influencer. When Swati decided to pursue a nonclinical career, this MSL was able to serve as a mentor to her. Swati says that since working for her company, she has really enjoyed this new career and is very satisfied with what she is now doing. I have interviewed three other MSLs, but I wanted to highlight Swati for a couple of reasons. First, I met her at the recent Physicians Helping Physicians conference in Austin, TX, in April. And I found her perspective on landing an MSL job very interesting and instructive. Second, her story demonstrates how an experienced physician can leverage a network of colleagues, and a deep knowledge in a specific field, to land a first MSL position after one interview. Some of the MSLs I’ve spoken with who are med-school graduates but not residency-trained, took quite a bit longer to get an interview, and endured multiple interviews before being hired. I’ve just created a free mini-course on how to become an MSL, based on a complete course I'm creating. You can find the FREE mini-course by going to vitalpe.net/msllecture. In it, I cover the major resources you should use to pursue this career. It’s the first of several free courses in the works. Today's interview is loaded with practical advice on how to pursue a job as a medical director for a health plan. My guest, Rich Berning, helps tease out the various roles within that career, and also explains related jobs with an Independent Review Organization and a hospital UM department. Rich is a full-time medical director. His first job in the field was with Anthem in Albany, NY. After working there for 5 years he recently accepted a promotion with another insurance company, in Pittsburgh, PA. Prior to entering the health plan world, Rich practiced pediatric cardiology for 20 years. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He completed his pediatrics residency at Stanford University and his cardiology fellowship at the University of California San Francisco. I really enjoyed hearing about Rich's journey. He described in detail the duties of a health plan medical director. He compared utilization management, utilization review and case management for us, and how each fits into his work with a health plan. Rich described what he likes about his role, the expected salary range, and how to pursue this popular nonclinical career. You can find links to the resources mentioned in today’s interview, and a transcript of the interview, by going to the show notes at vitalpe.net/episode088. I’ve got one more interview with one of the speakers from the Physicians Helping Physicians conference coming up. I’m circling back to medical science liaison Dr. Swathi Shah next time, because I’m getting ready to release a free-mini course on how to become an MSL. Today I have the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Marjorie Stiegler. She is an expert in branding, online marketing and course creation. And she’s an entrepreneur, author and accomplished keynote speaker. Marjorie is an anesthesiologist and Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is an expert and national speaker on patient safety, simulation, medical decision making, cognitive errors, and critical event debriefing. She completed medical training at Emory School of Medicine, Internship at Georgetown University Medical Center, and Anesthesia Residency at Massachusetts General Hospital. In today’s interview, we learn about the maternity active wear business she started in 2009. She describes her early forays into online branding and marketing. We get into the weeds a little about how she develops and delivers her online courses. It’s a fascinating conversation and I feel like we’ve just scratched the surface. Marjorie’s story is so interesting and varied. For those of us interested in creating an online coaching or consulting business, she can teach us so much. Her online marketing and branding skills can help us with promoting our clinical or nonclinical activities. And for those of us who want to develop online courses, her story is vey inspiring. You can find links to the resources mentioned in today’s interview, and a transcript of the interview, by going to the show notes at vitalpe.net/episode084. I’ve got some exciting interviews coming up with speakers from the Physicians Helping Physicians networking conference over the next few weeks. Thanks for joining me today.

Last weekend I got the privilege to speak at an amazing conference called Physicians Helping Physicians. During my discussion I got to talk about my software business that led me into early retirement at 35 (I will probably save that for a future episode!). But after my talk, I was reminded there was another business I had a year prior that led into starting the software business, and leaving my job. On this episode of BootstrapMD, I talk about what that business was and how I got involved, whether you can do the same type of business today (spoiler - you can - with some modifications), and the satisfaction of receiving a paycheck larger than my doctor’s salary.

Dr. Michelle Mudge-Riley has always refused to settle. In medical school, she realized patient care wasn’t for her…which was a difficult realization for someone on the road to becoming a doctor. Deciding NOT to settle for a job with patient care led her down a path through more schooling, then through a leapfrog job, and eventually on to what she does now - helping mid-career professionals make career transitions using the techniques she’d picked up along her journey. She points out that it’s a great time to not know what you want to do, as you no longer need another degree to do something different. She encourages thinking about ways to educate yourself outside of the debt-ridden educational system, and also points out that it has never been easier to go get experience in careers of your choice. And lastly, she helps professionals wrestle with the loss of identity often experienced when leaving a high-profile professional career - which often includes pointing out both that they can always go back, but also, reminding them to look at what they’re running toward…which is generally a happier, healthier work life. Check out the Physicians Helping Physicians conference in Austin this April!

The topic of our discussion in this episode is Run Towards Positive!Michelle joined Jeff on the mini-podcast to talk about physician side-gigs - a passion of hers and the focus of a company she founded, Scout A Career. Michelle tells us that when she first transitioned to a non-clinical career, she found it incredibly challenging. Through her early personal efforts and the outreach of others in a similar position, she realized there was a big need for this type of assistance. Now Michelle helps physicians feel hope and make changes when they’re angry or burned out. One helpful strategy Michelle champions is finding a side-gig to provide a positive alternative from the potential drudgery of routine life.If one already has so much “to do,” how and why would one add a side gig? The benefits are numerous, and Michelle highlights strategies to have your side gig allow you to do both.Suggestion 1 - Choose a side-gig that will compliment your daily routine or weekly schedule. What might those be?Suggestion 2 - Choose a side-gig that leverages your background and training. What additional steps can you add now to bring you closer to your side-gig?Suggestion 3 - When you ignore the negative and run towards the positive, the process works much better. Most importantly, when you run towards the positive you prevent burnout and improve or maintain your well-being!
