Roxana Norouzi is a longtime immigrant rights leader with 20 years of experience in organizing, advocacy, and social justice work with immigrant and refugee communities. She currently serves as Executive Director of OneAmerica, where she first began as an organizing intern 12 years ago and later led education policy efforts that won major state and local victories and secured millions in funding for multilingual education. Over the past decade, she has helped guide OneAmerica through a transformational shift toward deeper grassroots organizing, strategic policy campaigns, and building political power. Roxana is also a clinical instructor at the University of Washington School of Public Health. She earned her MSW from UW and was awarded the Bonderman Fellowship, which took her to 20 countries to study post-conflict regions, migration, and identity. As a first-generation American, her work is grounded in a deep commitment to racial equity and immigrant justice. Erika Evans is the first African American and first person of color to serve as Seattle City Attorney. A graduate of the University of Washington and Seattle University School of Law, Erika began her career in the Seattle City Attorney's Office before serving as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Department of Justice's Terrorism and Violent Crimes Unit and as Civil Rights Coordinator until March 2025, when she resigned following federal policy changes she opposed. She has also served as a pro tem municipal court judge in three Washington jurisdictions. Erika is a past president of the Loren Miller Bar Association and co-chair of the Washington Leadership Institute. Seattle City Councilmember Alexis Mercedes Rinck is known for bringing people together around practical solutions and delivering results. A graduate of Syracuse University and the University of Washington's Evans School of Public Policy and Governance, Rinck built her career as a community organizer and policy leader. She has advanced campaign finance reform, supported public health and human services policy across 38 cities during COVID-19, and held leadership roles at the Sound Cities Association and the King County Regional Homelessness Authority. As a councilmember, she created a dedicated Committee on Federal Policy Changes to respond to federal threats to Seattle and has championed union-built social housing, immigrant rights, and progressive revenue solutions. Today's guest is Anne Speckhard, Director of the International Center for the Study of Violent Extremism. She's an expert in rehabilitation and repatriation of terrorists and their families, and has consulted with foreign governments on issues of terrorist prevention, interventions and repatriation; and the rehabilitation and reintegration of ISIS foreign fighters, wives and children. Her latest book, Homegrown Hate, examines the deepening threat of domestic violent extremism in the US through in-depth interviews with current and former members of domestic hate groups. In this episode, Alon and Anne discuss the psychosocial dimensions of violent extremism, what attracts people to these ideologies, how terrorists and violent extremists have been able to utilize social media to draw people in, and what can be done to try to prevent people from falling into extremist ideologies. Anne Speckhard, Ph.D., is Director of the International Center for the Study of Violent Extremism (ICSVE) and served for over 2 decades as Adjunct Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Georgetown University School of Medicine as well as an Affiliate in the Center for Security Studies, Georgetown University. She has interviewed over 800 terrorists, violent extremists, their family members and supporters around the world. Over the past 5 years, she has conducted in-depth psychological interviews with 275 ISIS defectors, returnees and prisoners, as well as 16 al Shabaab cadres, studying their trajectories into and out of terrorism, and their experiences inside ISIS and al Shabaab. Speckhard developed ICSVE's Breaking the ISIS Brand Counter Narrative Project from these interviews, which includes over 250 short counter narrative videos that mimic ISIS recruitment videos but contain actual terrorists strongly denouncing ISIS as un-Islamic, corrupt and brutal. Beginning in 2020, she launched the ICSVE Escape Hate Counter Narrative Project, interviewing 54 white supremacists and members of hate groups, developing counternarratives from their interviews, and creating anti-recruitment videos. She has also conducted rare interviews with five Antifa activists. Dr. Speckhard is also an expert in rehabilitation and repatriation of terrorists and their families. In 2007, she designed the psychological and Islamic aspects of the Detainee Rehabilitation Program in Iraq to be applied to 20,000+ detainees and 800 juveniles. This work led to consulting with foreign governments on issues of terrorist prevention, interventions and repatriation; and the rehabilitation and reintegration of ISIS foreign fighters, wives and children. She has also worked on these issues with NATO, OSCE, UN Women, UNCTED, UNODC, the EU Commission and EU Parliament, and to the US Senate & House, Departments of State, Defense, Justice, Homeland Security, Health & Human Services, and the FBI. Dr. Speckhard actively trains key stakeholders in law enforcement, intelligence, elite hostage negotiation teams, educators, and other professionals in countering violent extremism, locally and internationally, focusing on the psychology of terrorism, the effective use of counter-narrative messaging materials produced by ICSVE, as well as studying the use of children as violent actors. Her consultations and trainings include US, Australian, German, Swiss, Belgian, Iraqi, Jordanian and Thai national police and security officials, among others. She also serves as an expert witness, testifying on a variety of topics pertaining to trauma, loss, dissociation, violent extremism and terrorism. Dr. Speckhard is the author of 5 books & has appeared on CNN, BBC, NPR, Fox News, CTV, CBC, and in the New York Times, London Times, TIME Magazine, Daily Beast and more. She regularly writes a column for Homeland Security Today. Her research has been published in Global Security: Health, Science and Policy, Journal of African Security, Journal of Strategic Security, Journal for Deradicalization, Perspectives on Terrorism & more.

Dr Sami Alanne, DMus, music therapist, training psychotherapist, psychoanalyst, is an Adjunct/Associate Professor of music therapy and a researcher at the University of the Arts Helsinki. His studies include traumas, refugeeism, mental health, psychoanalysis, and psychotherapy relating to music, culture, philosophy, and society. He is the author of the books The Theory and Practice of Psychodynamic Music Psychotherapy (Barcelona Publishers) and Music, Music Therapy and Refugees: Aspects of Trauma (Palgrave Macmillan). Dr Alanne graduated as a music therapist at the Sibelius Academy in 1999 and the Master of Philosophy in music therapy at the University of Jyväskylä in 2001. He has worked in music therapy and mental health fields for over 30 years. As a music therapist and a psychotherapist, he has worked with children, adolescents, their families, and adult clients providing individual and group therapy at his private practice and health care company Apollo Terapiapalvelut (Apollo Therapy Services) in Helsinki. Besides his clinical work, during his career Alanne has been actively teaching, supervising, doing research, project work, and media appearances relating to music therapy, psychotherapy, health care, social welfare, and mental health services. In 2010, Alanne was awarded the title of Doctor of Music at the Sibelius Academy. His published dissertation was Music Psychotherapy with Refugee Survivors of Torture. In 2011, Alanne graduated as a psychodynamic music psychotherapist at the University of Oulu, and in 2013, as a trainer psychotherapist in music psychotherapy at the University of Oulu, Faculty of Medicine. After his special advanced level training of music psychotherapy at the University of Oulu in Finland, Alanne published another monograph Musiikkipsykoterapia (2014) in Finnish that was a study of psychodynamic music therapy theory, methods, and research. Since then, Dr Alanne continued his research and teaching of music therapy and psychotherapy: He has published several peer-reviewed scientific articles and books and presented them at multiple international conferences. Dr. Stephen Gamboa is an Adjunct Associate Professor at UNC and medical director of UNC Health Pardee's emergency department in Hendersonville, North Carolina. In today's GEMCast episode, he shares his first-hand experiences from two major natural disasters: the 2017 Tubbs Fire in Northern California and Hurricane Helene, which hit Western North Carolina in 2024. As he joins host Dr. Christina Shenvi, the two talk about how these events have a disproportionate impact amongst our frail older patients, which can be attributed to age-related comorbidities, reduced mobility, and higher care needs. The immediate impacts of natural disasters, such as smoke inhalation and needing to rapidly evacuate homes and skilled nursing facilities (SNFs), are just the tip of the iceberg. I co-authored a research paper for NYU School of Law and the NYU Wagner Graduate School of Public Service's Furman Center for Real Estate and Urban Policy titled The Condominium v. Cooperative Puzzle: An Empirical Analysis of Housing in New York City, published in 2007 by the Journal of Legal Studies at the University of Chicago. Back in 2010, I developed pending home sale indices for the Washington, D.C., and Baltimore metro areas, and Central Pennsylvania, on behalf of Bright MLS, one of the largest multiple listing services in the U.S. One of my favorite activities is serving on the New York City Mayor's Economic Advisory Panel, representing the residential real estate sector, and the New York State Budget Division Economic Advisory Board. I've also participated in valuation studies with academic institutions, including New York University, Princeton University, Columbia University, and Baruch College. I participated in and co-authored an epic research paper as part of the Urban Land Institute Advisory Services for the city of Norfolk, VA (its flooding problems are getting worse). I also authored a white paper for One Fine Stay, a hospitality brand owned by AccorHotels, titled "The Future of Luxury New Development in New York: Leaving $1 Billion on the Table." In the valuation world, I am a state-certified real estate appraiser in New York and Connecticut, and I provide expert witness testimony in various local, state, and federal courts. I hold the Counselors of Real Estate (CRE) designation. I am also an Appraiser "A" Member of the Real Estate Board of New York and a former two-term President of RAC, a premier appraisal organization whose members focus on complex residential properties for relocation, litigation support, testimony, and reviews. As a result of my extensive writing and investigative research on this Housing Notes platform, I brought public attention to the misconduct of two key institutions in the appraisal profession: The Appraisal Foundation and The Appraisal Institute. As a result, I became an expert witness for the Appraisal Subcommittee at FHFA in Washington, DC, which aired for three hours on C-SPAN in 2023. One memorable thing that came out of my appearance was the birth of my fourth grandchild during the session. On the personal side, I'm clearly a homebody and love hanging out with my wife, whom I met in college in 1980, greasing donut trays at 5:30 am at the student bakery, a part of the second-largest non-military cafeteria in the world, located at Michigan State University. There is nothing better than when any of our four sons and their significant others, including the grandchildren, are in town. For our fortieth wedding anniversary, my wife and I went to Antarctica (perhaps I'm not a homebody?) While I'm at it, a couple of formative childhood adventures: At 12 years old, I climbed to the snow line of Mt. Kilimanjaro (leadership said I was too young to summit - boo!) In middle school, I traveled to the Soviet Union on a study abroad program before the wall fell. When I was a teenager and before I got my driver's license, I rode my bicycle from Oregon to Virginia in the summer of 1976, carrying all my gear (my parents claim they gave me a one-way airplane ticket to fly across the US, and I came back!) At age 25, I co-founded Miller Samuel because I didn't know any better. In my offline hours, I love to read, explore new music, try to make snow, attempt to catch lobsters, and endeavor to connect to my backyard birdhouse camera from whatever airplane I happen to be flying on. Scott is an Extension Educator with the Ohio Sea Grant College Program, where he leads research and runs education and outreach programs on watershed restoration, coastal zone management, and stormwater runoff. He is also an Adjunct Associate Professor of Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences at Case Western Reserve University, where he works on several research projects. Scott's work is all about collaboration — bringing people together to solve problems that no one can tackle alone. He knows that collaboration isn't automatic. It takes time, trust, and spaces where people feel heard and included. He also believes that every place is different, and you need to really understand the local context to make teamwork work. Different projects need different kinds of partnerships, and Scott is skilled at figuring out what each situation needs. Her tenure with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (CSO) included playing with the Cincinnati Opera, Cincinnati May Festival, Cincinnati Ballet and Cincinnati Pops Orchestras. She performed under the batons of Igor Stravinsky, George Szell, Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland, Eugene Ormandy, Eric Leinsdorf, Max Rudolf and so many more.   In addition to solo appearances with the Cincinnati Symphony, Cincinnati Pops and Cincinnati Chamber Orchestras, she was featured on NBC's Today Show at age 15, in an impromptu jam session with Duke Ellington shortly after joining the orchestra, and with Dave Brubeck on the Johnny Carson Tonight Show, the CSO European tour, and at the Interlochen Arts Academy. While a student at CCM, she recorded sound tracks for James Brown, whose career was launched by the historic King Records in Cincinnati.   Marie served on the CCM faculty, 1964 -1973, on the faculty at Miami University of Ohio, 1973 - 1979, and returned to CCM as Adjunct Associate Professor, 1979 - 2002. She was appointed Professor of Music at Indiana University 1999, serving there until a year after her 2001 appointment as Professor of Trumpet and Brass Department Chair at the prestigious Shepherd School of Music at Rice University.   In 1999, Marie was one of six Americans (and the only American woman) to be invited by the Tokyo International Music Festival to perform in its first Super World Orchestra. In addition to the National Trumpet Competitions, she has served as adjudicator for the ITG, IWBC and the prestigious Fischoff National Chamber Music competitions.   In 1996, Ms. Speziale performed with the Monarch Brass on its inaugural tour. She conducted the Monarch Brass at the 1997 and 2014 conferences, and played, toured and recorded with Monarch Brass Quintet and Monarch Brass Ensemble until retiring from playing.   President of IWBC, 1997 - 2001, Marie hosted the 2000 conference at CCM and served on the Board of Directors.   Ms. Speziale has won many awards and honors, including Leading Women in the Arts Award from the Greater Cincinnati Coalition of Women's Organizations, the Outstanding Woman of the Year in Music Award from the Tampa Tribune, the SAI Chapter, Province and National Leadership Awards, the Pioneer Award from the International Women's Brass Conference, the Golden Rose Award from the Women Band Directors International, the Woman of Excellence Award from the Italian Club of Tampa, the Distinguished Alumna Award from CCM and the Outstanding Alumni Award from the University of Cincinnati.   In 2018, Marie was inducted into the Cincinnati Jazz Hall of Fame as part of their recognition of the Symphony Jazz Quintet, of which she was a founding member. She was presented with the prestigious Honorary Award from the International Trumpet Guild at their 2018 conference. It all went down with lightning speed and took the world by surprise: the toppling of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime by a group of rebels united in their hatred of the brutal dictator. Abu Mohammed al Jolani, who has led this so-far successful rebellion, has been working to present to the world a pragmatic image. He has been associated since his youth with various jihadist groups but is suggesting that the new Syria will be a proper country where civilians may go about their lives peacefully. Olive branches have been sort of extended to the Kurds as well as Israel, but in very guarded language. After all, Turkish President Erdogan has been Jolani's main benefactor and supplier of weapons, and he is not known to be a silent, benign actor. No. If Erdogan is in the mix, it is because he wants something. And we already know that he wants to bomb the Kurds into submission. Because that is what he has been doing for the past week or so. So—something's gotta give. Syria is a complex pastiche of minorities—religious and ethnic—and many scores to settle. ISIS-aligned jihadists remain strong in sections of northern Syria, where thousands of former ISIS fighters and their families are imprisoned in primitive camps controlled by the Kurds. Russia has been driven from its Syrian bases. Iran has suddenly lost its land bridge through Syria to Lebanon, cutting off Hezballah supply routes.
