Before 1492, hundreds of Indigenous communities across North America included people who identified as neither male nor female, but both. They went by aakíí'skassi, miati, okitcitakwe, or one of the hundreds of other tribal-specific identities. After European colonizers invaded Indian Country, centuries of violence and systematic persecution followed, imperiling the existence of people who today call themselves Two-Spirits, an umbrella term denoting feminine and masculine qualities in one person. Despite centuries of colonialism, the Two-Spirit people are reclaiming their place in Native nations. Gregory D. Smithers's book, Reclaiming Two-Spirits, seeks to decolonize the history of gender and sexuality in Native North America. It honors the generations of Indigenous people who had the foresight to take essential aspects of their cultural life and spiritual beliefs underground to preserve their stories. Drawing on written sources, archaeological evidence, art, and oral storytelling, Reclaiming Two-Spirits spans the centuries from the Spanish invasion to the present, tracing massacres and inquisitions and revealing how the authors of colonialism's written archives used language to both denigrate and erase Two-Spirit people from history. But as Gregory Smithers shows, the colonizers failed — and Indigenous resistance is core to this story. Reclaiming Two-Spirits amplifies their voices, reconnecting their history to Native nations in the 21st century. Gregory D. Smithers is a professor of American history and Eminent Scholar at Virginia Commonwealth University and a British Academy Global Professor at the University of Hull in England. His research focuses on Cherokee and Southeastern Indigenous history, as well as gender, sexuality, racial, and environmental history. His books include Native Southerners: Indigenous History from Origins to Removal and The Cherokee Diaspora: An Indigenous History of Migration, Resettlement, and Identity. Follow him at gregorysmithers.com and on Twitter (@GD_Smithers). Hailey Tayathy is an enrolled member of the Quileute Tribe, a visual artist and Seattle's premier Coast Salish drag queen. They are a founding member of the Indigenize Productions artist collective and organizer of the Indigiqueer Festival. Tayathy uses their queer Native experiences to inform their unique brand of drag. They aim to bring healing to Indigenous communities and to show everyone that Indigiqueers are still here and are stronger and more beautiful than colonizer minds can imagine.  Reclaiming Two-Spirits: Sexuality, Spiritual Renewal & Sovereignty in Native America Third Place Books

Hello friends! We're so excited to be back after our holiday hiatus with more Twilight content for you all, in this episode we will be covering the first half of Eclipse. Before you listen to this episode we do want to address that this episode and the next two will have mentions of sexual assault and grooming. We are issuing a Trigger Warning for these episodes because unfortunately these sensitive topics are deeply embedded in the plot. If you find these triggering in any way, skip this episode and the next two, and we'll see you next time!Eclipse is a pretty heavy book and our approach on this episode is a bit more critical in a literary way than in previous episodes. We talk a lot about Edward and Bella's shifting relationship dynamic, Bella as a character and how she has to fight so hard to be heard, and Charlie's fall from being a 10/10 dad to not prioritizing his daughter. We have some squee moments as well, like the addition of the most perfect and sweet character: Seth Clearwater and our undying love for Rosalie. In this episode we talk about Stephanie Meyer's cultural appropriation of the Quileute Tribe's stories and her depiction of the tribe itself throughout the series. So for the rest of our coverage on the Twilight Saga we will be including this link in our episode descriptions: https://mthg.org/ It's for the Quileute Move to Higher Ground, their mission is to move the tribe out of a tsunami zone and into a safer location. You can donate via the link! Once again, thank you for joining us for this week's episode! We've missed you so much and are excited for more episodes to come. We will be back with Part 2 of our Eclipse book coverage soon. This podcast is produced and edited by Guin and Alyssa. Our cover art is done by Laker Thrasher.

Fair warning, this episode is VERY silly. If any of our listeners want to know what its like to hangout with Erin and Meghan, you will definitely want to listen to this episode. This episode is a fun recap of Twilight Eclipse, aka Twilights peak! We talk about the weird love triangle that is Jacob, Edward and Bella or should we say Switzerland. We also discuss the "new" Victoria, high school graduation parties, and how Edward hoards getting married over Bella's head the ENTIRE movie. We hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did recording it. We DID forget to rate this movie in traditional mini myths fashion...so Erin gives this movie a solid 7, but Meghan gives the 1st 1/2 of the movie a 6 and the 2nd half an 8.5. In this episode of Doing Diversity in Writing, we—Bethany and Mariëlle—conclude our conversation about marking the unmarked by discussing description.    In this third episode on the topic, we discuss: marking and unmarking in terms of description the Twilight series and the problematic use of dark and light why we, as writers, have to consistently ask ourselves what the outcome is of the descriptive choices we make   Some quotes from this week's episode:   “Describing things as good or bad, welcoming or frightening, is done differently depending on history, religion, region, and the history that the people involved have.”   “The associations we create as authors need to be mindful, and we need to be watching for what kind of implications those descriptions can have.”   “As writers, when we're looking at describing places, we need to consider who we're placing in that place and how we want our readers to think about them. If we're using terms like “high-crime” and “distressed”, that paints a certain picture of anyone we place in that area.” And here are the (re)sources we mentioned on the show: “‘Twilight': How much money did all 5 movies make?” by Abeni Tinubu: https://www.cheatsheet.com/entertainment/twilight-how-much-money-did-all-5-movies-make.html “Civilized Vampires Versus Save Werewolves: Race and Ethnicity in the Twilight Series,” by Natalie Wilson: https://www.academia.edu/28684886/Civilized_Vampires_Versus_Savage_Werewolves_Race_and_Ethnicity_in_the_Twilight_Series “Recognizing that words have the power to harm, we commit to using more just language to describe places,” by Jennifer S.
