David Dastmalchian is having one hell of a year. Whether you know him as Polka-Dot Man from "The Suicide Squad," Piter from "Dune," or Jack Delroy from last year's sleeper horror hit, "Late Night with the Devil," the actor/writer/comic book creator has made a habit of stealing scenes and bringing unhinged yet human characters to life. And in 2025, that streak continues across a dizzying lineup of passion projects. In this episode of Bingeworthy, David Dastmalchian joins the show to dig into his wide-ranging work, starting with the new Apple TV+ series "Murderbot," where he plays Gorathen, an augmented human struggling with control, jealousy, and a deep need to protect his crew—even when they don't listen. The show, created by Paul and Chris Weitz and based on the beloved comedic sci-fi book series by Martha Wells, stars Alexander Skarsgård as the titular security unit: a rogue robot just trying to live and watch its stories in peace.

Sometimes the scariest thing can be the things we take for granted: our personal devices. Cell phones, smart TVs, Siri, Alexa. That's exactly what John Cho must battle in Chris Weitz's new film AfrAId (August 30). "Siri and I have a bumpy relationship. I've been looking at her askance for years." Cho plays Curtis, a dad tasked with protecting his family after their digital assistant turns against them. "Looking back on my own parenting, we didn't really think twice about the computer and the iPad, which is just a really open tunnel for the whole world to get to our children." Acknowledging the pros and cons of technology, Cho says "the film is really about, what if the con was much worse than we thought?" Cho jumped at the role because of Weitz. "He happened to write a fantastic film, but there's a chance I would have done it even if it was terrible, because I love him so much." And AfrAId adds another unique credit to Cho's impressively diverse resume. "I was [always] an omnivore when it came to entertainment. It's not like I stayed in one particular lane." Argentina week kicks off with us getting raw as we discuss the Top 5 Movie steaks. Whether they're used as symbols of the choice to willingly subjugate yourself to an artificial reality like they are in THE MATRIX, the manifestation of your burgeoning animal instincts as in MADAGASCAR or even doing something really odd with them like eating them as they do in GOODFELLAS, the well-seasoned Dads have probably got you covered. OPERATION FINALE is the incredible story of the capture and extraction of Adolf Eichmann from Argentina to Israel to face justice for his crimes as one of the orchestrators of the Holocaust. What begins as a spy drama with a heist type feel gradually evolves to be a character study of the man who inspired the phrase 'banality of evil', Eichmann (Ben Kingsley) and the reputationally damaged Mossad agent Peter Malkin (Oscar Isaac) whose personal experiences of the horrors perpetrated by Nazi Germany drives him on the daring mission. AMERICAN PIE director Chris Weitz was the obvious choice to tell such a thrilling story and even manages to insert a toilet scene in amongst the many powerful discussions about the differences between justice and vengeance and sequences describing the devastating personal effects of the Nazi's genocide. Such a spectacular true story probably doesn't need a pointlessly fabricated for Hollywood romantic sub-plot but we're lucky enough to get one here. We finish Argentina week where else but Indonesia in Netflix's 2021 animated series CARMEN SANDIEGO. In "The Sticky Rice Caper' the super thief repels a plot by VILE who have produced a bioweapon capable of devouring massive crops of rice in hours leaving the entire population liable to starve. Simple but striking animation and with an educational element cleverly integrated into the action this was a hit with all of us and not just because Carmen herself is super-hot. Peter provides a bonus review of the 1994 cartoon because he watched the wrong episode, the sweaty sausage-fingered ninnyhammer that he is.We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. That's right, we're covering the Twilight Saga in honor of the tenth anniversary of the release of Breaking Dawn: Part II. Our Twilight Saga series will be three episodes. This week, we're talking about the filling in the Twilight sandwich: the middle films, New Moon (2009, dir. Chris Weitz) and Eclipse (2010, dir. David Slade). We talk about the non-existent "love triangle" and why thinking about Taylor Lautner makes Leah sad. The Twilight Saga: New Moon, commonly referred to as New Moon, is a 2009 American romantic fantasy film based on Stephenie Meyer's 2006 novel New Moon. It is the second film in The Twilight Saga film series and is the sequel to 2008's Twilight. Summit Entertainment greenlit the sequel in late November 2008, following the early success of Twilight. Directed by Chris Weitz, the film stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner, reprising their roles as Bella Swan, Edward Cullen, and Jacob Black, respectively. Melissa Rosenberg, who handed in a draft of the film script during the opening weekend of Twilight, returned as screenwriter for New Moon as well.

The film features the voices of Woody Allen, Sharon Stone, Jennifer Lopez, Sylvester Stallone, Christopher Walken, Dan Aykroyd, Anne Bancroft, Danny Glover and Gene Hackman. Some of the main characters share facial similarities with the actors who voice them.[10] Antz was the first film from DreamWorks Animation, and the third feature-length computer-animated film after Disney and Pixar's Toy Story (1995) and NDR Filmes's Cassiopeia (1996). During its production, a public feud erupted between DreamWorks co-founder Jeffrey Katzenberg, and Steve Jobs and John Lasseter of Pixar, due to the production of their similar film A Bug's Life, which was released a month later. This only worsened when Disney refused to avoid competition with DreamWorks' intended first animated release, The Prince of Egypt (1998). Antz premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 19, 1998,[11] and was released theatrically in the United States on October 2, 1998, by DreamWorks Pictures. It grossed $171.8 million worldwide on a budget of $42–105 million. The film received positive reviews, with critics praising the voice cast, animation, humor, and its appeal towards adults.[12]

The film industry was hungry for fantasy franchises after the success of Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings, and while Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials series didn't seem an obvious choice, there was certainly potential in its alternate dimensional vision and chosen one narrative. But despite the presence Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig, Eva Green and cgi polar bears, Chris Weitz's muddled effort, renamed The Golden Compass, failed to ignite the imagination of audiences and critics, bombing at the box office and sinking any hopes of the sequel it shamelessly set up. The Ginger Geek Matt Delhauer joins us for our 100th show to discuss the political undertones and overtones (and of course some racism and classism) in the Star Wars franchise as a salute to May the Fourth be with you, and happy cinco de mayo too... Ahead of the release of the “Star Wars” film “Rogue One,” Disney chief executive Bob Iger made an emphatic claim when asked about the movie's message: “Frankly, this is a film that the world should enjoy. It is not a film that is, in any way, a political film,” he told the Hollywood Reporter, speaking about what was then the latest addition to the sprawling sci-fi saga. “There are no political statements in it, at all.”Iger was reacting to controversy over (quickly deleted) tweets from two of the film's writers. Chris Weitz had observed that the series' Galactic Empire represented “a white supremacist organization.” It was “opposed,” commented his colleague Gary Whitta, “by a multicultural group led by brave women.” Just weeks after the election of President Trump and the culmination of an acrimonious, racially charged political campaign, the film was hailed by some as “anti-Trumpian” — and subject to boycotts by irate members of the alt-right, a coterie of white nationalist who were upset about the film's supposed liberal bent.★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
