Isn't the Christ Story a Copy of Other Mythologies? - Adam Kohlstrom by CSBC
Author and mythologist Devdutt Pattanaik talks about the idea of a non-biological birth across faiths, why the idea exists and how it has been used to shape history.
In this episode Chris explores Professor E.J. Michael Witzel's theory on the source and origin of all the mythologies of the world. A single explanation? Yes, indeed! Witzel uses a historical approach to comparative religion, aided by the latest in linguistic, archeological and DNA evidence to trace the myths of the world back to two distinct groups, an older one he calls Gondwana and a later one called Laurasian. Through this process he traces our myths back some 40,000 years and beyond, constructing a "family tree" of world myths and reconstructing their original form. What he finds is, not just common motifs and characters, but a single unifying story-line--a mythic history--which ties together the myths and religions of our ancient past. Enjoy ;)
Welcome back to ARTMATTERS: The Podcast for Artists!I'm recording this intro from Washington DC where I'm rounding up a couple last interviews of the tour. Reedies Against Racism's protest of the Humanities 110 curriculum at Reed College reached a turning point in the 2017–2018 school year. After a year and a half of debate, dozens of faculty members voted on a revised syllabus, the second semester of which introduced brand new material from Mexico City and the Harlem Renaissance. But in September 2018, an entire department voted not to teach the spring syllabus—and as the years passed, discontent with the syllabus grew, among both faculty and students.Visit our website for a transcript and links to documents and articles mentioned in the episode.Featured voices in this episode: Addison Bates, Eden Daniel, Mary James, Libby Drumm, Roger Porter, Jan Mieszkowski, Pancho Savery, Kambiz GhaneaBassiri, Peter Steinberger, Nathalia King, Kritish Rajbhandari, Nigel Nicholson, and Albert Kerelis.Produced and hosted by Stephanie Bastek. Questions: How do the various attachments styles affect how we grieve? Do fearful avoidant grievances come from fearing identity loss while simultaneously fearing abandonment? Can a fearful avoidant be afraid of losing an identity that they have yet to discover and how does that contribute to their relational dissatisfaction? Does playing along with the dynamics of the dismissive avoidant or anxious partner nullify the grievances of the fearful avoidant partner? How does the swing of the fearful avoidant paradox operate within the space of blame shifting and uncertainty? Why is the vulnerability of grief acknowledgement vital to the fearful avoidant's framework for healing? What role does unaddressed grief and unspoken grievances play in reconciling the worthiness wounds of the fearful avoidant? 1. How do fearful avoidant grievances stem from the fear of both identity loss and abandonment, creating a complex interplay of emotions? 2. Can a fearful avoidant individual be paralyzed by the fear of losing an identity they have yet to discover, leading to dissatisfaction in their relationships? 3. In what ways does the presence of dismissive avoidant or anxious partners influence and potentially invalidate the grievances of a fearful avoidant partner? 4. What role does the paradoxical nature of the fearful avoidant's behavior play in the realm of blame shifting and cultivating uncertainty within relationships? 5. Why is the acknowledgment of grief and vulnerability crucial for the fearful avoidant's journey towards healing and self-discovery?
Keynes as prophet of mature capitalism, against its rival religion of communism. The arcane language of economics sages. Mythologies that economics/capitalism supplanted (and that's a good thing). Nature of mythologies old and new: how they make you feel good early on, and what happens when they run their course.

Today's Guest is definitely one of my favorite people in Comics. Troy-Jeffrey Allen is known as the physical form of Previews World and Co-Founder of RexCo Comics, but today we speak on his newest works as he prepares for the release of a hybrid of Culture, Comics, and Music with AfroFutures. A collection classic Mythologies, Historical Black heroes, Artificial Intelligence, and Futuristic Artwork that catches the eye. Troy and myself speak on the means of looking at comic culture from within and continuing to see ways to insert his love of Hip hop as he did recently with ODB Lyrical Ruckus in the city, The ALL CAPS-MF Doom Tribute, and Chuck D Apocalypse '91. To kick off a new year of Talking Scared, I've gone and hooked us a big guest, with a whopper of a story. John Langan is the author of The Fisherman. It's one of the great works of supernatural fiction written this century, but its story doesn't end at its back-cover. The strange mythology of The Fisherman extends beyond, swimming further downstream, to pop its monstrous head above the surface in John's wider universe of short stories and novellas. In this special episode, we talk at length about The Fisherman – about the classic books, real-world legends and cultural beliefs that inspired it, and about the process of building a whole new mythos. John is the poet-scholar of horror. This is the class you wish you'd taken in college. Enjoy! “Pity sex happens when people have sex with other people because they feel sorry for them. Pity (or mercy) sex is an experience in which a woman (or a man) is not particularly attracted to someone who is in love with her and wishes to have sex with her; she sleeps with him because she feels sorry for him. Like a one-night stand, pity sex is usually an isolated occurrence; unlike a one-night stand, pity sex has an altruistic element, intended to give pleasure to the other person but not to the one who pities—after all, pity is not a pleasant emotion. Many people (women probably more so) may have sex because they think they “should" rather than because they actually want to. This can be a kind of guilt-induced sex. (See here.) Charity sex is common in ongoing relationships that have lasted for a while and usually occurs in an effort to maintain or enhance the relationship. It can be regarded as a kind of investment in the relationship; like other investments, you might not see the benefits immediately, but you increase the prospects of reaping benefits in the future. Charity sex typically occurs in a situation of profound love, in which the sexual aspect has significantly diminished over time. In charity sex, you love your partner, but don't feel like having sex with him or her. It might not be enjoyable, but it typically does not involve suffering. In pity sex, the pitying partner does not want to have sex with the one she pities because she is not physically attracted to him. In charity sex, you usually find your partner attractive and generally enjoy having sex with him, but at this specific time you do not feel like having sex. Nevertheless, you consent, as you believe your partner wishes it or will benefit from it—for instance, because he is feeling somewhat low and sex will improve his mood. Peace-inducing sex is instrumental sex intended to maintain industrial peace in the relationship. It has elements of both pity and charity sex. Like charity sex, it is a long-term strategy intended to maintain the relationship. Whereas charity sex aims to promote the relationship, peace-inducing sex aims to prevent the deterioration of the relationship. Like pity sex, the agent does not enjoy the sex and often suffers while having it. Peace-inducing sex can be very painful when both sides lack any positive affective attitude. Consider the following description by a woman (who has a lover): "Last night I had sex with my husband, but he did not actually touch me—just penetrated me. I was so sad, I felt like crying." -Psychology Today. “Other Scenarios Drunken sex is another type of sex that in normal circumstances would not be desirable, but the difference here is that whereas in pity sex the pitying person does not enjoy the sexual activity, in drunken sex he or she might. The conflict in pity sex is between what you do not want and what the other person does want; in drunken sex, the conflict is between what you would not want in normal circumstances and what you want when you are intoxicated. In the case of expedient sex, people may have sex with someone, not out of love or pity, but in order to derive some material benefit, such as money or status. The classic scenario would be an attractive young woman and a much older, wealthier man. In this case, the altruistic element is replaced by the element of greed. In the case of sexual friendship (or "friends with benefits"), where the connection between the two partners is based on sex and perhaps casual friendship, mutual pleasure can be derived. But since such a relationship does not involve love, it is more superficial and less meaningful. Sometimes, however, people greatly enjoy superficial experiences, particularly when they do not impose many obligations on either side.” -Psychology Today. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support

This is the seventh, wow!, in my series of special episodes of Write, Publish, and Shine as I take you on a deep dive into the creation of Room magazine issue 46.3, where I was lead editor of the issue. In this issue, I spoke with our cover artist, Amy Friend, who was also the cover artist for the very first issue I edited for Room, called Mythologies of Loss.Amy Friend's art truly resonates on a deep level of nostalgia and grief with me, and also because of the incredible artistry she does with photographs, turning those difficult experiences into beauty.Clearly, we're vibing even over a decade of editing for Room, in those themes of loss and longing. I spoke with Amy Friend about how she makes her photographs, what draws to these themes, and how photography as a medium inherently communicates memory, loss, and absence. All of the notes for this episode are up at rachelthompson.co/86—WRITERLY LOVE LETTERS: Sent each week to your inbox. rachelthompson.co/letters Hosted on Acast. Progress and development have long been important issues in anthropology and social sciences. Based on extensive archives and ethnographic fieldwork, Progress in the Balance: Mythologies of Development in Santos, Brazil (Cornell UP, 2023) addresses and assesses an anthropological theory of progress. Daniel Reichman documents and explains the contested meanings of progress, and reveals how this concept is deeply embedded in Brazil's histories and socio-cultural contexts. Further, he investigates how any society can separate “progress” from plain old change and, if changes are constantly happening all around us, how and why certain events get lifted out of a normal timeframe and into a mythic narrative of progress. Each chapter in the book outlines a particular episode in Santos, a city undergoing an unprecedented period of economic and political turmoil, as it is represented in public culture, mainly through museums, monuments, art, sports, and public events. Drawing on narrative stories and the anthropology of myth, Reichman proposes a model that he refers to as a “clash of timescapes.” Progress in the Balance shows how the concept of “progress” requires a different temporal structure that separates sacralized social change from mundane historical events, offering analysts a new framework of understanding progress and development. Daniel R. Reichman is Professor of Anthropology at the University of Rochester. His research focuses on cultural responses to economic change, especially the anthropology of trade and globalization in Latin America. He is the author of The Broken Village: Coffee, Migration, and Globalization in Honduras, which was awarded 3rd prize in the 2012 Victor Turner Prize in Ethnographic Writing. Yadong Li is a PhD student in socio-cultural anthropology at Tulane University. He conducts ethnography among ufologists in China. His research interests lie at the intersection of the anthropology of the supernatural, hope studies, and post-structural philosophy (hauntology).
