In this final episode of our Pride Series, we're celebrating how far we've come with managing HIV and reflecting on the courage it took to persevere through the AIDS crisis. You'll hear from Natalie Wilson, PhD, a dedicated advocate working to eliminate new HIV infections by 2030, and revisit insights from Dr. Donald Abrams, a pioneer in studying cannabis for AIDS patients. We hope that listening to this series has shed light on the love that led to cannabis legalization, and inspired you with the resilience and ongoing efforts within the LGBTQ+ community. "There are people who are living with HIV that never go to a diagnosis of AIDS. The field has done a really great job at starting medications really early to suppress the virus so that people's immune systems can maintain the integrity to protect the person from infections or these disorders that people have. So the prognosis is really good. If we can catch somebody early in a diagnosis and start medications they have a very long life. It is not going to impact them like the old days." - Natalie Wilson If you enjoyed this episode, we'd recommend Episode 247, AIDS & Cannabis: How AIDS Pioneers Sparked the Medical Cannabis Movement, Part 2. Though April showers may come your way, they bring the flowers that bloom in May! And now it's March, and here's our first episode of 2024. Well be honest, 2023 was not an easy year for the NFG boys, so we took a few months off. Fortunately we had Natalie Wilson, who made a generous donation to Timmy Nelson's (past a future guest) charity stream for Child's Play, a charity that puts video games in the hands and hearts of children that have long stays at a hospital. Natalie decided she wanted to hear our thoughts on "Singin' in the Rain" (1952), and here they are! They'll be standing in linesFor those old honky-tonk monkeyshines, and so will you.
For a lot of us movement teachers and coaches, moving our bodies ultimately changed our lives leading to one of our biggest goals: to simply get our clients moving! Moving the body in different ways is truly a process of discovery. It's about being curious and about seeing what it can or cannot do. The evolution of our industry is inevitable and to try and maintain Pilates purity seems counterproductive when we live in an ever-changing world. Today Hannah takes on a discussion about the Pilates Police. Those out there who have taken it upon themselves to be the authority on arbitrating what the definition of Pilates is — the defenders of the source code. She's joined by the amazing Natalie Wilson out of Seattle, and together they share thoughts and beliefs on why bullying shouldn't be tolerated! They delve into the impacts of the Pilates Police, on the confidence of new teachers, our clients, our businesses, and our industry. They unpack different strategies and tips on dealing with encounters with the Pilates Police and why it's crucial that we regain focus on keeping Pilates fun and light! Tune in now for all this, and so much more, on this episode of The Pilates Exchange!Key Points From This Episode:Natalie Wilson: who she is, what she does, and where she's at.Her Pilates work in the hospital setting: working with people who have multiple sclerosis. Each year, hundreds of thousands of people go missing in the United States. Although African Americans represent thirteen percent of the population, people of color make up roughly forty percent of missing persons cases. Despite making up a significant proportion of these cases, people of color often don't receive the proper amount of exposure. Co-founders of the Black and Missing Foundation Derrica Wilson and Natalie Wilson share how their nonprofit works to bring attention to cases of missing people of color. They explain the resources they use to help amplify these cases and share how listeners can help and get involved in their own community. At the 2023 CrimeCon in Orlando, Derrica and Natalie received the Clue Award for 'Crime Fighter of the Year' for the impact the Black and Missing Foundation has made on countless missing persons cases across the country.
