Spencer Goldstein is a Military Police officer turned pacifist and conscientious objector. Spencer is a graduate from West Point and has his masters in biblical exposition. He began to think differently about peacemaking through the disability community who taught him that God's love for all people is grand and one centered on peace. Spencer began to read the words of Jesus who talks of peace, love of enemy, and forgiveness through the eyes of marginalized people and decided he could no longer serve in the military. He now is transitioning out of the Army and works for the Center on Conscience and War as the director of development and is working as an intern for RAWtools where they disarm hearts, forge peace, and cultivate justice.
In this special episode, Shane is joined by his partner/wife Katie Jo Brotherton to discuss - joy! Why it is important and how they find it in the work they do together with RAWtools, enjoying music, and reading. The reweaving of our relationships with each other and the earth depends in large part on our capacities to engage our imagination, call on inspiration, and create new ways forward. Mike Martin, co-founder and Executive Director of the non-profit organization RAWTools joins us for this conversation that includes healing from gun violence by transforming guns to garden tools, the necessity of learning how to resolve conflict without violence, and how community gardens are powerful spaces of healing trauma and cultivating belonging. About Mike Martin: Mike learned to blacksmith in order to turn guns into garden tools and is passionate about connecting people to nonviolent skills like restorative justice and conflict mediation. He is trained for restorative justice facilitation, dialogue circles, and encourages everyone to explore how they can connect to similar efforts in their community. Mike believes turning swords into plowshares requires a comprehensive approach to gun violence, one that addresses the triggers in our streets, and the triggers in our hearts. Many of you are familiar with the work of RAWtools (turning guns into garden tools), but the deeper part of our work involves restorative justice. The founder of RAWTools, Mike Martin, will join us along with Sharletta Evans who is at the forefront of the Restorative Justice movement in America. Sharletta's three year old son, Casson, was killed in the cross-fire during a shooting by teenagers. Many years later, one of the boys sentenced to life without parole began to correspond with her. Join us for this special event to hear how they continue to work together to heal the wounds of violence. Susan Haynes | Micah 4:1-8 In the last days the mountain of the Lord's temple will be established as the highest of the mountains; it will be exalted above the hills, and peoples will stream to it. Many nations will come and say, 'Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the temple of the God of Jacob... The law will go out from Zion, the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. He will judge between many peoples and will settle disputes for strong nations far and wide. They will beat their swords into ploughshares and their spears into pruning hooks.' Up to this point Micah has prophesied disaster for the people of God as a consequence of their many sins. But now, says Susan, there is a change of tone as Micah looks forward with hope. God's kingdom rule will be established, bringing restoration and forgiveness. We, living since the coming of Jesus, have all the more reason to trust this promise. The recording begins with the reading from Janet Chalmers. After Susan speaks, Dan Parnell describes two present-day projects that seek to put into practice the teaching of Micah. Our Common Fate features Shane Claiborne and Mike Martin. Shane is a Christian activist, advocating for nonviolence and service to the poor. He is the author of many books, including Beating Guns: Hope for People Who are Weary of Violence, which he co-authored with friend and peace activist Mike Martin. Mike is the founder and executive director of the national non-profit RawTools.Using the second chapter of “Who Will Be A Witness” as guide, we explore the biblical character Barabbas and his relationship with Jesus. We discuss Barabbas’ role in this Holy story instead of diluting, domesticating or misdirecting the meaning of Barabbas in relationship to Jesus.
This we week we welcome theologian and activist Shane Claiborne. Together we discuss one of his recent books “Beating Guns” and wrestle with gun reform, and the 2nd Amendment in light of a Gospel-centered worldview. We ask questions about if it is a gun problem, heart problem or both. What about self defense? What should we do with out fear? How shall we interpret the 2nd Amendment? How shall we interpret the words of Jesus? Part of Shane’s work is working with RAWtools, an organization which accepts guns from those who have voluntarily unarmed themselves and turn these weapons into gardening tools. Dan talks with Rex Harsin about his new documentary called "Beating Guns," made with Shane Claiborne and Michael Martin of RAWTools. What does it mean to believe in and follow a non-violent savior while wielding a gun? Can a Christian be a peacemaker while being licensed to carry? What does it mean to be a follower of Christ living in a nation that is saturated with gun violence? These are some of the questions Beating Guns addresses. On Part I of our two-part episode on gun violence, we’re speaking to Maj Toure, Chicago youth educator and founder of Black Guns Matter. Maj believes that communities of color should bear arms as a form of self-defense against oppressive forces. He also informs us on the racist history of gun control, mass incarceration, and bias within law enforcement. He uses his organization to give young people an understanding and responsibility for the tool so they know how to safely resolve conflicts and protect themselves. Black Guns Matter provides gun safety education and resources to students in urban areas as a way to support community relations. But Maj also sees the value in individual self-care. He asserts that having a gun is similar to self-care as they both require discipline and habitual training. To him, we can only sustain safe and healthy communities by supporting these individual acts and creating spaces where young people can feel seen and heard. You can learn more about Black Guns Matter on their Twitter. And be sure to connect with Maj, too @MAJTOURE.
