Daniel experienced significant symptoms of postpartum depression after his daughter arrived and he talks us through that often hidden experience that many dads go through after they become parents. He started speaking to his quarter- Chinese daughter in Mandarin as he was coming out of the worst of his postpartum depression and we discuss how he and his wife arrived at the decision to commit to a bilingual upbringing for their child who doesn't easily "read" as Chinese or Chinese American. If you'd like to learn more about Daniel Tam-Claiborne and his work, check out:- His debut novel Transplants which was a 2023 PEN America Literary Award Finalist- Website at www.travelbreedscontent.com

Do you sometimes ask your kids questions like "are you doing ok?" or "am I causing you trauma" and then they stare at you blankly and ask if they can have candy now? All three of us have kids who are of multiple racial and ethnic ancestry. We all worry about how they will relate to various parts of their identities and if they will feel a healthy sense of belonging... but that's not the sort of thing most kids will be able to straight up tell you.So we brought on an incredibly thoughtful adult who grew up as a bi-racial person in America and we had a very honest and vulnerable discussion of what that was like for him. Daniel Tam-Claiborne is the author of Transplants, which was a 2023 PEN America Literary Award Finalist. Daniel talks about his childhood growing up in New York City with an ethnically Chinese mother who herself grew up in Cuba and his Jewish father. He discusses how he felt both insider/outsider in many aspects of his identity as a biracial person and how that has shaped his life as an adult and even now as a father of a young daughter. If you have a biracial person in your life that you care for, this one is a must-listen.

George Washington Cable. “Café des Exiles.” An antiquated story-and-a-half Creole cottage sitting right down on the banquette, as do the Choctaw squaws who sell bay and sassafras and life-everlasting, with a high, close board-fence shutting out of view the diminutive garden on the southern side. An ancient willow droops over the roof of round tiles, and partly hides the discolored stucco, which keeps dropping off into the garden as though the old café was stripping for the plunge into oblivion — disrobing for its execution. I see, well up in the angle of the broad side gable, shaded by its rude awning of clapboards, as the eyes of an old dame are shaded by her wrinkled hand, the window of Pauline. Oh for the image of the maiden, were it but for one moment, leaning out of the casement to hang her mocking-bird and looking down into the garden, — where, above the barrier of old boards, I see the top of the fig-tree, the pale green clump of bananas, the tall palmetto with its jagged crown, Pauline's own two orange-trees holding up their hands toward the window, heavy with the promises of autumn; the broad, crimson mass of the many-stemmed oleander, and the crisp boughs of the pomegranate loaded with freckled apples, and with here and there a lingering scarlet blossom. Jean Étienne de Boré (December 27, 1741 – February 1, 1820) was the first Mayor of New Orleans. His wife, Marie Marguerite d'Estrehan, came from one of the most prominent families of colonial Louisiana; her father, Jean Baptiste d'Estrehan, was the Royal Treasurer of French Louisiana. Etienne owned a plantation a few miles above the City of New Orleans. There he had originally cultivated indigo. But when this product lost its market as a result of competition from Guatemala, he turned his attention to the manufacture of sugar. On his estate he set up a sugar mill and there, in 1795, had, with the aid of two Cubans, Mendez and Lopez, succeeded in producing the first granulated sugar ever known in the colony, with the result that agriculture was completely revolutionized. He was appointed mayor by Governor William C. C. Claiborne in 1803; he resigned to look after his personal affairs the following year. He died at around 80 years old, and is buried in New Orleans' Saint Louis Cemetery No. 1. One of his daughters was the mother of Louisiana historian Charles Gayarré. This week in Louisiana. "The last murder in the bloodiest Vendetta in modern times was committed the 20th day of August when Tom Kinder killed John Ferguson on the road from Homer to Trenton. For three years the fight has been on and twenty men have fallen in the conflict. There are two local papers here, but their editors have handled the incidents of the feud in a gingerly manner for fear, I suppose, of getting a charge of shot or a warning to leave town. For that reason nothing is known of it outside of Claiborne parish. The parties from whom I gleamed the facts for this article talked under their breaths and only on conditions that their names be kept secret. Welcome to Season 5, Episode 31! Our guest today is Daniel Tam-Claiborne, a writer, multimedia producer, and nonprofit director. His latest work is the novel Transplants released by Simon & Schuster. It's a coming of age story following two young women—Lin, who is Chinese and Liz, who is Chinese American. They're both navigating the journey to find their truest selves in a world that doesn't know where either of them belong. The novel is an exploration of race, love, power, and freedom that reveals how—in spite of our divided times—even our fiercest differences may bring us closer than we can imagine. Tam-Claiborne is also the author of the short story collection What Never Leaves, and his writing has appeared in a variety of publications and outlets including Michigan Quarterly Review, Catapult, Literary Hub, Off Assignment, The Rumpus, HuffPost, and elsewhere. Outside of writing, Daniel serves on the Board of Directors of Seattle City of Literature and on the Advisory Board of Off Assignment. He's a frequent speaker, moderator, and host. In our conversation, we discuss the process of writing a novel, inspiration for Transplants, feelings of belonging, the importance of COVID and lockdown as an element of Transplants, the diversity in the Asian American community, and so much more. Transplants is a well-written, moving book that we think shares several common themes that resonate with so many audiences. Tam-Claiborne doesn't shy away from deep issues that Asian Americans, Asians, and expats face as he explores belonging, identity, and more.
