What will it take to address gun violence in America, and what might peacemaking have to say about it? These next few weeks, as we close out Gun Violence Prevention Month this June, we're taking some time to hear from the visionary peacemakers addressing the issue in creative, imaginative ways. Our first guest is Mike Martin, the Founder and Executive Director of RAW Tools. RAW Tools turns guns into garden tools (and other lovely things), resourcing communities with nonviolent confrontation skills in an effort to turn stories of violence into stories of creation. As they say it, they disarm hearts to forge peace. Mike is also the co-author of Beating Guns with Shane Claiborne, which discusses how our nation, and especially communities of Christian peacemakers, can transform the violence of guns into healing, generation, and life. While this conversation was recorded over a year ago, we felt the time was finally right to share, and we didn't want to sit on it any longer. This conversation is rich with policy analysis, theological framing, and personal stories, and we think you'll be powerfully inspired by it. Revisiting Episode 17 from December 3, 2020. Podcast: Play in new window | Download Subscribe: Google Podcasts | Email | RSS | More Author Shane Claiborne IN THIS EPISODE In this episode of Messy Jesus Business, originally released as episode 17 from Dec. 3, 2020, Sister Julia Walsh talks with Shane Claiborne, a best-selling author, speaker and activist. They discuss what it means to be a peacemaker while living in one of the world's most heavily armed countries and a monumental gun death toll. “Violence is one of those demons that goes back to our very foundations in our country,” Claiborne says. Claiborne says the U.S. has 5% of the world's population, but almost half of the world's guns, and poses the question, “What would Jesus, the Prince of Peace, be saying right now?” Sister Julia and Shane Claiborne also discuss the importance of remaining joyful and hopeful, even when surrounded by the pain of the world. “I like how Karl Barth said we need to read the bible in one hand, but we need to hold the newspaper in the other… so that our faith doesn't just become a ticket into heaven and a license to ignore the world we live in, but our faith should actually fuel us to want to change the world,” Claiborne says. In addition, they discuss the importance of community and the messiness that comes from the Christian veneer of perfection. “A lot of the times we sort of act like the church is a country club for saints, rather than a hospital for sinners.” Claiborne says honesty can help manage the resulting mess. He remembers walking into a church where greeters wore shirts that said, “No perfect people allowed.” “If that was greeting every person coming into every church, it would give you a sense of reality, like this is a home for you even if you don't have it all together… our wounds are not our liabilities, they are our credentials.” He adds, “Honesty can show this Gospel is not for the Righteous, but for the sinner.” FOR MORE INFORMATION: Learn more about the Red Letter Christians movement, headed by Shane Claiborne, by exploring their website. In this episode, activist Shane Claiborne echoes Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's framework that the Church is not the master or the servant of the State, but the consciousness of the State. This is a framework that gives us the freedom as Jesus-followers to actively and wholeheartedly engage with politics. It is our job that when the State causes harm to our fellow image-bearers, we critique the State at the ballot box because of our convictions of love and God's desire to see human flourishing. Homily for Ascension- "Together We Rise" . . . . There is a sign on the front of Robb Elementary School, “Together we rise.” Ordinary, uplifting, students and teachers must have passed by it hundreds of times coming in and out of school. This week it stands for the Ascension. Ascension means “together we rise.” In completion of his mission, the gospels witness how Jesus travelled up to Jerusalem where he was lifted up on a cross before he was raised up from the dead. He raises his hands and blesses the Apostles, before he is lifted up to the heavenly sanctuary, the altar on high at the right hand of God. As any Jewish listener of the day would understand, to be “lifted up” was the language of making an offering to God. The Gospel and our reading from the Letter to the Hebrews presents the Ascension as a new covenant liturgy of the Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur, the once yearly ritual purification of the Temple and the People of Israel from sin. As prescribed in the Book of Leviticus, first, Israel's High Priest would offer an animal sacrifice before all the People gathered outside of the temple. Next, the high priest would ascend the temple steps in a cloud of incense, enter the temple, and pass through a curtain veil into the Holy of Holies, the inner room, to sprinkle the sacrificial blood onto what's called the “mercy seat” in atonement for their sins. Finally, the priest would return once more to the People greeted with shouts of joy announcing forgiveness. The Paschal mystery, Christ's death, resurrection, and ascension, form one continuous liturgy of forgiveness and reconciliation, where Jesus serves as both the sacrifice and the great high priest. At the Cross, Christ offers himself as the sacrificial offering. Risen from the dead, Christ the eternal High Priest blesses the apostles and is taken up in a cloud, ascending into a temple not made by hands, but a sanctuary in heaven to present the sacrificial offering to God, his own blood shed for our sins. Finally, we hear that he will return, come down to us announcing his time of salvation and judgment. The Ascension reveals what a true act of worship looks like, in a word, true sacrifice. True worship is not an argument over traditional or contemporary hymns, English or Latin prayers. True worship is measure by the quality of the sacrifice we offer of ourselves. In the heavenly sanctuary, Christ intercedes for us not by offering his “thoughts and prayers,” but his own self, body and spirit. This kind of worship has the power to transform every aspect of our lives. Together we rise. That is what the Ascension is all about. True worship of God is lifting up our hearts, our selves, as a sacrificial offering to God as an act of participation in Christ's eternal offering of himself before the Father in heaven in atonement for our sins and of the whole world. The remedy to gun violence will take true sacrifice, sacrificial love. Until then, until our worship rises to the challenge before us, we will be left with only a copy of the real thing. Fake, phony worship looks like the lives of children sacrificed on that altar of the right to own a semi-automatic assault rifle. Whenever an organization or individual uses the “existence of evil” as an argument in favor of arming more teachers, pastors, or asserts gun control makes one “less free,” I feel as if I am reading a page out of The Screwtape Letters (C.S. Lewis). What else could Satan's solution to gun violence be than more guns? Jesus “did not carry a gun. He carried a cross” (Claiborne/Martin, “Beating Guns”). In this way only did Christ disarm the power of evil and sin. If more guns means more peace, more freedom, then Caesar was right, and Christ died for nothing. The Cross was the single greatest gun-buyback program in history. The Ascension is the beginning of the Church on mission. The disciples may have been left looking up to heaven, but they soon got to work here on earth. And so, along with our hearts, let's lift up our minds and voices. To offer our thoughts and prayers only counts if by that we mean we offer hope and solutions. Let's lift up our brains to the task at hand. We have the spiritual, material, and theological resources to make a difference; we just have to want to. “For many years, the USCCB has supported a number of reasonable measures to address the problem of gun violence. These include: • A total ban on assault weapons, which the USCCB supported when the ban passed in 1994 and when Congress failed to renew it in 2004. [If you own an assault weapon, turn it in to a buyback program. If assault weapons are your hobby, find a new hobby.] • Measures that control the sale and use of firearms, such as universal background checks for all gun purchases; • Limitations on civilian access to high-capacity weapons and ammunition magazines; • A federal law to criminalize gun trafficking • Improved access to and increased resources for mental health care and earlier interventions • Regulations and limitations on the purchasing of handguns; • Measures that make guns safer, such as locks that prevent children and anyone other than the owner from using the gun without permission and supervision; and • An honest assessment of the toll of violent images and experiences which inundate people, particularly our youth. These are statistically-proven policies that have stopped gun deaths in other countries. I would add, and this is just me, let's make a grade “F” rating from the N.R.A. the standard for the Catholic vote. Do not support politicians who receive endorsements from the NRA or money from their Political Victory Fund. Those politicians aren't on the ballot? Lift them up. Let's decide to raise them. We cannot lift our hands in worship unless and until we first put down our weapons. Lift up your heart. Lift up your voice. Lift up your hands. Let us offer to God, the almighty Father, a true, acceptable, and living sacrifice. Together we rise.

Shane Claiborne joins the show to talk guns and peacemaking. In the episode, we talk about gun idolatry in American, the reckoning we still have to face due to guns, and whether moving towards a way of peace is even possible. Shane also powerfully juxtaposes guns and the cross of Christ, pointing out that each represent two far different versions of power. One year ago today, Dr. Drew Hart's book- Who Will Be A Witness was released into the world. In honor and celebration of that moment, we are re-releasing this bonus episode with Shane Claiborne. "As a special bonus for our listeners, we have created a series to commemorate Inverse Podcast co-host Dr. Drew Hart's brand new book *Who Will Be a Witness: Igniting Activism For God's Justice, Love, and Deliverance.* In these additional episodes, we will interview friends and co-workers to discuss chapter by chapter Drew's new book. These conversations were recorded in community with friends from around the world as part of Inverse's ongoing work to create formation experiences that deepen our witness to God's justice, love, and deliverance. *Who Will Be a Witness* offers a vision for communities of faith to organize for deliverance and justice in their neighborhoods, states, and nation as an essential part of living out the call of Jesus. Drew provides incisive insights into Scripture and history, along with illuminating personal stories, to help us identify how the church's witness has become mangled by Christendom, white supremacy, and religious nationalism. He provides a wide range of options for congregations seeking to witness Jesus' ethic of love for and solidarity with the vulnerable. At a time when many feel disillusioned and distressed, Drew calls the church to action, offering a way forward that is deeply rooted in the life and witness of Jesus. Drew's testimony is powerful, personal, and profound, serving as a compass that points the church to the future and offers us a path toward meaningful social change and a more faithful witness to the way of Jesus. My guest is Shane Claiborne, a Christian activist fighting against war, gun violence, and the death penalty. I got to meet him recently at a death penalty abolitionists' meeting in Columbia, S.C., and he graciously set aside a little time to talk about the struggle to end state-enforced killing in my state and across the country. On a personal note, Shane's writing has meant the world to me. His first couple of books, The Irresistible Revolution and Jesus for President, helped me understand the teachings of Jesus as radical, countercultural "good news for the poor" as the Good Book tells us. His more recent books include Executing Grace and Beating Guns.Talking with Shane was a breath of fresh air after my previous interview with Fred A. Leuchter Jr., the man who earned the nickname "Mr. Death" because he sold so much death chamber equipment to states in the '80s. I published that interview in Luke O'Neil's Welcome to Hell World newsletter (there's also an excerpt up at brutalsouth.substack.com if you want to check that out). Here's a clip from the interview when I asked Leuchter for his opinion on firing squads, which South Carolina just authorized for executions this year:“I’d rather be electrocuted, if you really want to know. But one of the things I found out, and I didn’t know this when I started, but I found out after being involved in it for over 30 years, is that the human body as I told you earlier is designed to protect itself and not allow you to kill it. And because of that, and everybody’s body is different, we can design a system that is completely flawless and works all of the time and does everything exactly right, but you’re gonna get, 20% of the time, you’re gonna get somebody who’s not gonna fit the mold, and he’s gonna be an issue. So even when we do everything right, we have a problem that we shouldn’t have had, and it’s because of an unknown physiological condition in the person that we’re executing. My feeling is that if we’re gonna execute people, we need to do it right and humanely. Other than that, we shouldn’t be doing it. If I can’t do the execution right 100% of the time, maybe we shouldn’t be doing it. So I’m not a proponent of capital punishment.”I'm skeptical of Fred Leuchter's claim that he's not a proponent of the death penalty. He may have done more singlehandedly to aid and abet the execution of imprisoned people in the U.S. than any other person in the second half of the 20th century, and he went out of his way to do so without a medical license or formal training in electrical engineering. The Leuchter interview was difficult and strange for me. I didn't want to lend credence to what he was saying, but I felt it was important to highlight his central role in the making of the modern death penalty regime in the U.S.My interview with Shane, on the other hand, was a great relief. I went from talking about the practical and mechanical issues of killing another person to the life-giving work of loving our neighbors. Shane stands with an executed savior, and so do I.While I've got you here, please go rate and subscribe to the podcast wherever you listen, or just tell a friend about an episode you liked. I’m seeking information on the purchase, inspection, and maintenance of electrocution equipment in the state's death chamber. Shane Claiborne is such a beautiful human being and it was a privilege to speak to him. As you will hear in the conversation he has his finger in many interlinking pies. Shane is just so humble and relatable - just an ordinary guy - yet he has learned that his life can make a difference and has given himself to that. Some of you will have listened to episode 17 with Caz Tod-Pearson from the Simple way. Shane is one of the founders of the Simple Way and is still part of that community in Philadelphia. We don't go into this so much because there is so much else to talk about but if you want to hear more about that go back and listen to that chat with Caz. S1E6: Shane Claiborne on Beating Guns and the Death Penalty by Ketch Smith
Evangelical activist Shane Claiborne joins the podcast to talk about America's epidemic of gun violence. We recorded this episode on March 24th - a few days after mass shootings in Atlanta and Boulder, and the 3rd anniversary of the March For Our Lives. The conversation includes why gun violence is both a heart problem and a law/legislation problem, why Americans make idols of guns and rugged individualism, and Virginia becoming the 23rd state to outlaw the death penalty. The problem of gun violence can certainly look bleak, but Shane has an infectious hope that meaningful change is possible, and we felt more hopeful after talking with him. "He will judge between the nations and will settle disputes for many peoples. They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore." As a special bonus for our listeners, we have created a series to commemorate Inverse Podcast co-host Dr Drew Hart's brand new book Who Will Be a Witness: Igniting Activism For God's Justice, Love and Deliverance. In these additional episodes we will interview friends and co-workers to discuss chapter by chapter Drew's new book. These conversations were recorded in community with friends from around the world as past of Inverse's ongoing work to create formation experiences that deepen our witness to God's justice, love and deliverance. Who Will Be a Witness offers a vision for communities of faith to organize for deliverance and justice in their neighborhoods, states, and nation as an essential part of living out the call of Jesus. Drew provides incisive insights into Scripture and history, along with illuminating personal stories, to help us identify how the witness of the church has become mangled by Christendom, white supremacy, and religious nationalism. He provides a wide range of options for congregations seeking to give witness to Jesus' ethic of love for and solidarity with the vulnerable. (Buy Drew's new book here.) This first conversation discusses the Introduction of Who Will Be a Witness with activist, author, and speaker Shane Claiborne. Shane worked with Mother Teresa in Calcutta, and founded The Simple Way in Philadelphia. He heads up Red Letter Christians, a movement of folks who are committed to living "as if Jesus meant the things he said." Shane is a champion for grace which has led him to jail advocating for the homeless, and to places like Iraq and Afghanistan to stand against war. Now grace fuels his passion to end the death penalty and help stop gun violence. Shane's books include Jesus for President, Red Letter Revolution, Common Prayer, Follow Me to Freedom, Jesus, Bombs and Ice Cream, Becoming the Answer to Our Prayers, Executing Grace, his classic The Irresistible Revolution, and his newest book, Beating Guns. He has been featured in a number of films including "Another World Is Possible" and "Ordinary Radicals." His books have been translated into more than a dozen languages. This we week we welcome theologian and activist Shane Claiborne. Together we discuss one of his recent books “Beating Guns” and wrestle with gun reform, and the 2nd Amendment in light of a Gospel-centered worldview. We ask questions about if it is a gun problem, heart problem or both. What about self defense? What should we do with out fear? How shall we interpret the 2nd Amendment? How shall we interpret the words of Jesus? Part of Shane’s work is working with RAWtools, an organization which accepts guns from those who have voluntarily unarmed themselves and turn these weapons into gardening tools. Shane Claiborne is a prominent speaker, Christian activist, and best-selling author. 25 years ago he served alongside Mother Teresa in Calcutta, India and upon returning to the States, founded a New Monastic community in Philadelphia called The Simple Way. Shane heads up Red Letter Christians, a movement of people committed to living as if Jesus meant the things he said. He calls himself “a champion for grace” which has led him to jail while advocating for the homeless, and to places like Iraq and Afghanistan to stand against war. Author & activist Shane Claiborne worked with Mother Teresa in Calcutta & founded the Simple Way in Philadelphia. His many books include The Irresistible Revolution, Jesus for President, Executing Grace, & his latest, Beating Guns. In this special episode of the Zeitcast, we are on location with Shane at the Red Letter Revival in Goldsboro, NC—outside his solar-powered skoolie (a school bus converted into a tiny house!). We talk about the ways in which the language of evangelical faith has been co-opted in the era of Trump, the need for a counter witness (& an outright revival!), how the way of Jesus is in fact narrow, the need for the power of the Spirit in justice work, & how his faith has explicitly motivated him to organize on the issues of gun violence & the death penalty. Click here to keep up with the latest Goose News: http://wildgoosefestival.org/signup/ Gun violence is a public health crisis. It is also a spiritual and moral crisis. In the US, We have nearly 5 times more gunshops than McDonald restaurants. More Americans have died from guns in the US in the last fifty years than in all the wars in American history. In the US, we manufacture 9.5 million guns a year, 26,000 a day, 18 per minute, one gun every 3 seconds. With less than 5% of the world's population, the people of the US own nearly half the world's guns. America also has the most annual gun deaths--homicide, suicide, and accidental gun deaths--at 105 per day, or more than 38,000 per year. Some people say it's a heart problem. Others say it's a gun problem. We say it’s both. And God changes hearts, but people change laws. The biblical prophets Micah and Isaiah imagine a world where God’s people beat their swords into plows and their spears into pruning hooks… transforming the tools of death into tools of life, building a world free of violence. This session includes a LIVE weapon transformation with RAW Tools, where a gun will be turned into a garden tool. With special guest Rev. Sharon Risher.
Thinking Out Loud is a place to digest audibly the things we tend to think through silently. We'll look at a variety of complex issues from a variety of points of view, not necessarily to get to "right answers" but to build empathy and perspective. Today I am joined once again by Rex Harsin. You may remember him for his documentary, Beating Guns, and our conversation surrounding that in episode 12. But today we discuss another documentary, The Family, available on Netflix. While promising to uncover a secret society of Christians who have been influencing American and international politics for decades...the documentary may have fallen a little short of those promises. Rex and I were both disappointed, but also felt like their were some meaningful takeaways. Give a list, and even watch the documentary if you dare, and let us know what you think! 71% of all carbon emissions are caused by just 100 companies. In light of statistics like these, do our small actions really matter? Will cutting meat from our diet, biking to work instead of driving, or growing our own food in the backyard actually have much of an impact on the state of the planet? If our actions are quite small in comparison to these much bigger actors, is there any benefit in doing them? Why not just focus on the large systemic changes needed to change our current situation? To answer these questions, we talk to Christian writer and activist Shane Claiborne. Shane is the founder of The Simple Way and the author of numerous books including The Irresistible Revolution, Follow Me To Freedom, and Beating Guns. We also talk to Nick Laparra, who you may know from the podcast Let's Give A Damn. We talk to Tui, a farmer in Thailand, about what small actions look like for refugee farmers around Chiang Mai, and we hear from Richard Lee at IJM about what day-to-day work with small actions look like. Welcome to the Grassroots Podcast, a Plant With Purpose production. This show features global conversations about the environmental challenges we’re facing and what ordinary people are doing to in response. We’re going beyond doom-and-gloom. We’re looking at root causes, talking to people on the frontlines, and asking ourselves what we can do. There are reasons to be concerned, but there is also a case for hope.

Spiritual border-crossing and social creativity were themes in a conversation between Shane Claiborne and Omar Saif Ghobash, two people who have lived with some discomfort within the religious groups they continue to love. Ghobash is a diplomat of the United Arab Emirates and author of Letters to a Young Muslim. One of his responses to the politicization of Islam has been to bring a new art gallery culture to Dubai, creating spaces for thought and beauty. Claiborne is a singular figure in Evangelical Christianity as co-founder of The Simple Way, an intentional neighborhood-based community in North Philadelphia. One of the things he’s doing now is a restorative justice project inspired by a Bible passage — to transform guns into garden tools. This conversation took place at the invitation of Interfaith Philadelphia, which hosted a year of civil conversations modeled after the work of On Being’s Civil Conversations Project. Shane Claiborne is the founder of The Simple Way, an intentional community in North Philadelphia. He’s recently written a book, Beating Guns, about the movement he co-leads to transform America’s guns into garden tools. His other books include The Irresistible Revolution. His Excellency Omar Saif Ghobash is now the assistant minister for cultural affairs in the Cabinet of the United Arab Emirates. He was formerly UAE ambassador to France and Russia. His book is Letters to a Young Muslim. Find the transcript for this show at onbeing.org.

Guns kill an average of 105 Americans every day. Shane Claiborne is on a mission to change that with a converted school bus and a forge. He is literally beating guns into gardening tools & challenging our culture’s addiction to violence in the process. He talks with Skye about the legal and spiritual problem we’re facing. Also this week... Experts warned Netflix its series “13 Reasons Why” would cause an increase in teen suicide. That’s exactly what happened but Netflix doesn’t seem to care. Have the Harry Potter books replaced the Bible as Millennials’ foundational text? And why are more Americans impervious to facts?

This past weekend I took some of my seminary students to the “Beating Guns” tour where Shane Claiborne and Michael Martin led us in a powerful liturgy filled with statistics and singing, rap music and poetry, Scripture, stories, images, and fire. One of the aims of the worship event is to transcend the gun debate in America. One side says, “guns are the problem, and we must reduce the number of weapons,” and the other side says, “humans are the problem, and we just need to change hearts.” We gathered in the nearly-200-year-old Christ Church Cathedral in downtown Nashville. The church is not only the oldest Episcopal church in the city, it is also the cathedral parish of the Episcopal Diocese of Tennessee. The Very Reverend Timothy Kimbrough welcomed us. And he reminded us that the first building of the church, located several blocks away at Sixth and Spring Streets, was built with the labors of enslaved people in the 1830s. The rise of guns and rise of white supremacy came at the same time. To have this worship ritual at this house of worship was going to do spiritual and theological work on several levels.
