Lee Anderson and his pals have thrown their toys out of the pram – we unpack the latest Tory fallout. Plus, Houthi rebel strikes across Red Sea shipping lanes have led to counterstrikes from the UK and the US militaries. How has that action been justified and what's the danger of escalation? And, leading transport commentator Simon Calder joins the panel to give his thoughts on the UK's travel networks – the good, the bad and the ugly. • “It felt like ‘we've bombed this and this is why we did it' and it doesn't feel like that's how it should be in a democracy.” – Ros Taylor • “I'm not sure David Cameron is getting all 8 hours at night.” – Zoe Grunewald • “Everything is simply decided now it seems by Number 10 on what is most expedient politically.” – Simon Calder • ”There is simply no appetite for rail and that is why we're going into such a long spiral of decline, it is absolutely miserable.” – Simon Calder We're on YouTube!: https://www.youtube.com/@ohgodwhatnow www.patreon.com/ohgodwhatnow Presented by Dorian Lynskey with Ros Taylor, Zoe Grunewald and guest Simon Calder. Episode #206: Soon after Delphine Schrank arrived in Yangon in 2008 as a Washington Post reporter to cover the aftermath of Cyclone Nargis, she realized that life under the brutal military was a big part of the story there. Her curiosity led her to uncover a thriving underground network of dissidents committed to building democracy. Her resulting book, The Rebel of Rangoon, delves into the lives of two main protagonists, Nway and Nigel, offering a nuanced perspective on their sacrifices and struggles.Nway's commitment to the movement stemmed from a pivotal moment in medical school when he chose activism over a comfortable life. Nigel, on the other hand, was initially disillusioned by politics but found his calling during the Saffron Revolution. Delphine also writes about other key figures, such as Win Tin, who dared to speak out against the regime, and Aung San Suu Kyi.The role of Buddhism and meditation in sustaining activists even behind bars is also explored. Delphine dispels the misconception that Burmese Buddhism leads to passivity, highlighting how it strengthens resolve and encourages self-sacrifice.While nonviolent resistance defined the pre-transition period, the post-coup resistance and National Unity Government (NUG) now considere armed resistance as necessary to confront the military's unrelenting duplicity, violence and brutality.“They haven't got to the destination,” she says in closing, “but they're getting there eventually, so I still have huge faith in them. And because of the sacrifice, the understanding of that long struggle, and all the other things that many of them have, and even the Buddhist philosophy underlying all this, they're going to get there, it just might not be in their own lifetimes. And some of them are willing to accept that. But they're going fight like hell until they get there and lose a lot of people along the way.”

Is it a bad thing to be a black sheep? The answer used to be yes (a horde of shrieking Disney movies to the contrary). But after the 2020 shutdowns, our world has gone mad, and the SASF guys think every kid needs to learn how to be a black sheep. What does that look like? Be a sheep who's out of step with the status quo; willing to joyfully devote your life to working, worshipping, and having a family, no matter how many people say boo. To further this goal, the SASF pod welcomes illustrator Forrest Dickison, who just finished drawing your kids' new favorite character, Blah Blah Black Sheep. Blah Blah is a lamb who can't baa (he "blaaahs" instead), and the rest of the flock does not appreciate his boundless energy, curiosity, and desire to fight. Will Blah Blah's aunts realize too late that SOMEBODY needs to able to fight coyotes? (Blah Blah Black Sheep releases this October in a new rhyming children's book written by N.D. Wilson and published by Canonball Books). The Stories Are Soul Food podcast wants kids to distinguish between the "Rebels Without a Cause" and the healthy, happy black sheep -- because the world needs more of the real kind. You also get to add the phrase "Chestertonian Outlaw" to your vocabulary, and hear a discussion of Starlink, Papua New Guinea, and Forrest being an insufferable artist (it's his job). Stock up on the Blah Blah preorder special at blahblahkids.com. #StoriesAreSoulFood #SASF #NDWilson #ForrestDickison #BlahBlahBlackSheep #BlahBlah #BeABlackSheep #BlackSheep #CanonballBooks

This week, we're beginning a month on radical activism in the 1960s with a look at the student uprisings of 1968. Today is all about where those uprisings came from, how they're related to the "two Zens" of the 1960s, and the specific example of the University of Tokyo, where a debate about student medical internships turned into a violent and bloody battle between leftist student groups. Show notes here.

God lytting!

Joel aka Mr. Clean and Bones brings back to life the rebel scene, the party crews, the house music, the DJ's and the nightclubs. How was it all funded? Joey Stuckey is an award-winning blind guitarist, songwriter, singer, composer, producer, radio and television personality, music columnist, educator and sound engineer. He is also the official music ambassador for his home town of Macon Georgia. Joey's guitar style is reminiscent of rocker Jeff Beck and jazzer Wes Montgomery, while his vocal influences range from Mel Torme to Gregg Allman. As an infant, Joey lost his sight and sense of smell as the result of a brain tumor and was introduced to music from an early age. His mother enjoyed opera, while his dad enjoyed country music. When he was 13, Stuckey developed pneumonia and eventually had to be home schooled for an entire year. "I lived for my shows on Saturdays," says Joey. "I was a huge fan of public radio and on Saturdays, I listened to a show called, 'After Space.' It was DJ'd and produced by a guy called Rob Thomas (who eventually became a good friend and is still a great friend today). He would play radio shows like, 'The Lone Ranger,' 'The Shadow,' and other classic shows. I was so enamored with these stories - the sound effects and narration broadcast in a format accessible for the blind were just amazing." The show was produced so eloquently, Joey decided that sound production was what he wanted to do with his life. What began as a simple statement turned into a life-long passion. After that evolutionary period in his life, Joey bought all kinds of sound equipment and was soon recording sessions in his house with various garage bands. He was amazed at the writing ability from the many musicians he came across. "I realized, at that point, that there were things I wanted to share with the world," says Stuckey. "And I knew that the medium for that was music." Without missing a beat, Joey graduated from high school at the age of 14 and at 17, began his musical career by taking classical guitar lessons from noted music professor Terry Cantwell. Joey went on to attend Mercer University. He furthered his musical education by studying with renowned jazz guitarist Stanley Jordan and later, with Professor Steven Crowell. Despite his physical limitations, Joey has flourished in every aspect of his life. He released several albums, including 'Take A Walk In The Shadows' (1995), 'Ironies, Pain And The Light That Guides' (1999), 'Live And Stuff,' (2000), 'Live And More Stuff,' (2001), 'So Far,' (2003), 'Oceanside,' (2009), 'The Shadow Sound,' (2011), 'Mixture' (2012) and 'The Acoustic Sessions, Volume I' (2014). Joey experienced national success with the launch of 'Mixture,' which reached #9 on the CMJ Top 40 Jazz Charts for North America. In 2002, Joey met his wife, Jennifer, who works as a certified nurse midwife in Macon. He is also the owner and sound engineer of a recording facility, Shadow Sound Studio in Macon, which boasts vintage analog gear and state-of-the-art digital technology. Joey enjoys promoting music in various ways. He is a featured music columnist for the webzine 'Portal Magazine' and contributes regularly to a music blog on 'Gateway Macon,' where he writes about the history of music in Macon and other music-related topics. Joey is currently involved with students, instructing them on guitar, voice, music theory, and sound engineering. He is the professor of Music Technology at Mercer University and an official mentor for the Recording Connections School in Los Angeles. No stranger to musical theater, he was the music director for Macon State College's production of 'The Rocky Horror Show' in the fall of 2002. Recently, Joey has taken on the role of music publisher and has a growing catalog of great songs in multiple genres. His publishing companies include Sociology Publishing (BMI) and Sign Wave Publishing (ASCAP). Joey and his band, The Joey Stuckey Band, perform nationally. They have opened for legendary artists such as TED NUGENT, BAD COMPANY, TRISHA YEARWOOD, JAMES BROWN, CLARENCE CARTER, WET WILLIE, THE B-52'S, KEVIN KINNEY FROM DRIVIN' N CRYIN, and SMASHMOUTH. In his other roles as either producer, composer, music columnist, and sound engineer or hired musician, Joey has worked with musical greats including GEORGE THOROGOOD, ALAN PARSONS (PINK FLOYD, THE ALAN PARSONS PROJECT), ROSS HOGARTH (PRODUCER FOR VAN HALEN, JOHN MELLENCAMP, BONNIE RAITT), BILLY DUFF (THE CULT), JOE SOLO (PRODUCER FOR MACY GRAY), DANNY SERAPHINE (CHICAGO), BEN TUCKER (HERBIE MANN), DAVID RAGSDALE (KANSAS, SMASHING PUMPKINS), ALLEN VIZZUTTI (CHICK COREA BAND), SAMMY NESTICO (COUNT BASIE ORCHESTRA), DAVID BERGER (ARRANGER AND CONDUCTOR FOR JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER, ARRANGER FOR NATALIE COLE, ROSEMARY CLOONEY, MADELEINE PEYROUX AND CECILE MCLORIN SALEANT), SHANNON FOREST (TOTO, TAYLOR SWIFT, RASCAL FLATTS), CHARLIE HOSKYNS (THE POPES), PAUL MCGUINNESS (THE POGUES), WILL MORRISON (MODERN ENGLISH), CHUCK LEAVELL, RANDALL BRAMBLETT (TRAFFIC, GREG ALLMAN), HUGHIE THOMASSON (FROM LYNYRD SKYNARD AND THE OUTLAWS), JIMMY HERRING (FROM THE AQUARIUM RESCUE UNIT, FROG WING, THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND, AND THE OTHERS/GRATEFUL DEAD), MIKE MILLS from R.E.M and many, many others. In short, Joey is a young man with an enormous talent, clear vision, and a tireless work ethic, who is well respected by his peers, fans, and more than a few legends. Joey released his new single, 'Blind Man Drivin' in London, England on March 12, 2015 during his Spring tour. When it comes to environmental problems in general and global warming in particular, the general consensus is that ‘something must be done’. Greta Thunberg and Extinction Rebellion have become sensations. But what is worrying about this phenomenon is that the more detached from critical reason their arguments become the more they are acclaimed. Greta, for example, began by arguing that those who put forward alternative views were liars and asserted that she had a special gift for being able to tell when people were lying. Her recent speech at the UN Climate Summit was simply a series of assertions. Extinction Rebellion seems to be strongly linked to far-left political movements. The left often argues that climate change cannot be solved by markets. And aren’t hasty, to be honest about the trade-offs involved. The IEA's Digital Manager, Darren Grimes, asked the IEA’s Victoria Hewson, Head of Regulatory Affairs, and the IEA's Head of Political Economy, Dr Kristian Niemietz, to join him and discuss the trade-offs and challenges of adopting such a radical carbon-neutral prescription.
Grace. It's irresistible. It's inexhaustible. It's *amazing*. We begin “Amazing Grace,” our new teaching series through what's commonly known as the reformed doctrines of grace. We'll walk through the Bible's storyline and gaze at the wonderful grace of God from five different angles. Let's consider afresh what makes His grace so different, so irresistible, and so amazing.
You know what happens when a Christian acts like a rebel in his or her walk with Jesus? They conform to the world! Theyʼre not rebels in a romantic sense. Theyʼre rebels in a pathetic sense. (Pastor Gene Pensiero)

In a strange and ill-timed attempt to have an Easter episode, Riley and Kindred discuss Rebel Without a Cause. They wonder aloud if they have become dead inside and talk at some length about American Girl dolls. Later, Riley edits the episode and actively wonders if there is some service or therapy that exists that can help her to stop saying "like" in virtually every sentence she speaks.
Muir Vidler is a Scottish photographer whose work, often exploring humorous cultural and visual contradictions, straddles the increasingly blurred line between fine art and documentary. Born in Edinburgh, Muir previously worked as a chef, street entertainer and cruise ship photographer, where he learnt the rudiments of photography and managed to save enough money to enrol in a post-graduate diploma in photojournalism at the London College of Printing. In 2001 his portrait series of ageing British rebels and mavericks, Rebels Without a Pause was published by the Sunday Times Magazine. Since then Muir has remained in London and divides his time between commissions for magazines, corporations and record labels and personal, self-assigned projects. Muir's work has been exhibited internationally and has appeared in publications such as the New York Times, Time Magazine, Vogue and Vanity Fair. He is represented by Rove Gallery in the UK and the Mindy Solomon Gallery in the USA and is currently working on his first photobook, entitled Everything Is True. In episode 59, Muir discusses, among other things: The pros and cons of sharing an office His new book project, Everything Is True His style of portrait photography Growing up - California vs. Scotland What he learnt as a cruise ship photographer (250th at F11) Shooting self- assigned projects on spec. When it comes to portraits, people who are being their unique selves can result in the best photographs. In a world where digitally enhanced versions of ourselves are displayed everywhere, it’s refreshing to see images where real people are themselves. It’s made all the better when people who take pride in their uniqueness present themselves in front of the photographer’s lens. Muir Vidler is a editorial/commercial photographer who makes the most of such opportunities in all of his work. You can see it showcased especially well in his project, Rebels Without a Pause where he photographs some of Britain’s aging rebels and Mavericks. Vidler’s work possesses its own uniques by adeptly using color and setting to produce wonderful photographs. He is also a great example of a photographer who allows his curiosity to inspire his photography. Continuing the Game of Thrones series, we look at the final three kings of Judah --- Jehoiakim, Jehoiachin, and Zedekiah --- who were the ultimate rebels. Even after hearing God say rebellion would only cause destruction and pain, they still didn't want to listen. Each of us share similarities with them; we may hear God speaking, but we just don't want to listen. Instead, we want to be the kings of our own lives. But what happens when we wave that white flag, surrender to God, and let go of controlling our own lives? God delivers us from our own shackles and gives us freedom in Him.

Scripture teaches that because of the fall, all mankind are incapable of responding positively to God on their own. Scripture goes so far to say that we are "dead in our sins." We aren't just wounded as if it made it a little more difficult to obey God, and therefore, God has to assist us. We are dead in our sins. This corruption (sin) affects our relationship with God and fellow man in a radical way: * Our relationship with God (our heart, mind, and soul) * Our relationship with our fellow human beings: (throat, tongue, lips, mouth, feet and eyes)
