Elaine had an idea — “What if you made single malt whiskey with ‘mesquited' malt instead of peated malt?”‍Stephen couldn't shake the concept. After all, he knew mesquite well. He and Elaine owned a furniture design company that specialized in mesquite. Well-known for the flavor it imparts to food that is cooked over it, mesquite is a beautifully grained wood native to the desert Southwest.Stephen began learning everything he could about how the Scots make their whiskies. While learning how to floor-malt barley, he began with the recipe for Classic, modeled after the unpeated style of Speyside Scotches. If he could nail down a clean-finishing American Single Malt Whiskey that rivaled Scotland's finest, then he could take the recipe and put a Southwest spin on it — which is how our mesquited (not peated) Dorado was born.Stephen's Great Aunt, Nina Paul, working in the desert.When daughter Amanda Paul (Stephen and Elaine's daughter) got wind that her dad was making whiskey, she moved back home to Tucson from New York City in 2011 to make Whiskey Del Bac a business with Stephen. They founded Hamilton Distillers Group and launched the Whiskey Del Bac brand under it. Named after Tucson's 17th century Spanish mission San Xavier del Bac, Whiskey Del Bac is a combination of English, Spanish and the native Tohono O'Odham tongue meaning “Whiskey of the Place Where the River Reappears in the Sand.” While it may be tempting to call it Del Bac Whiskey, it is Whiskey Del Bac.Amanda helped get the licensing, build the Whiskey Del Bac brand, and together with Stephen they officially launched the whiskeys to a warm reception in the Old Pueblo. As a family, the Pauls set out to define what an American Single Malt Whiskey from the great American Southwest could be. The idea of terroir in whiskey has been much debated, but Whiskey Del Bac has established a flavor profile that is firmly rooted in the desert. The idea of violent crime, drugs, and federal law enforcement operations rarely comes to mind. But behind the postcard-perfect scenery, the Caribbean plays a major role in the global drug trade, and with it, comes a dangerous underworld of money, guns, and organized crime. DEA and the Police in the Caribbean, Drugs, Violence. “The Caribbean is beautiful, but it's also a major hub in the global drug trade,” Jack said during a recent appearance on the Law Enforcement Talk Podcast, available on Apple, Spotify, and major TV and podcast platforms. Much of the Caribbean lies along major smuggling routes between South America and the United States. Narcotics such as cocaine and heroin often move by sea, carried in everything from high-speed boats to drug submarines. Once in the Caribbean, the drugs are repackaged and rerouted, often with the help of armed criminal groups. As a Supervisory Special Agent with the DEA's Caribbean Division, Jack helped lead operations that intercepted everything from cartel-run aircraft to high-seas smuggling vessels. President and CEO Chris Frostad emphasized the discovery's growth trajectory, noting that initial holes yielded only 4 meters of similar-grade material, demonstrating significant expansion in both width and intensity. A successful 70-meter stepout to the northeast encountered even stronger mineralization, suggesting the discovery extends well beyond isolated pockets.Geologically, the Nova discovery presents unique characteristics that differentiate it from typical Athabasca Basin deposits. Rather than being directly associated with graphite horizons, the mineralization appears structurally controlled and positioned vertically against granite. This structural association aligns with emerging exploration trends in the basin and suggests a potentially new model for uranium mineralization in the region.The partnership with IsoEnergy provides strategic advantages over Purepoint's relationships with major mining companies. The joint venture structure offers greater operational flexibility, entrepreneurial approach, and aggressive development timeline while requiring Purepoint to fund only half of exploration costs.
